Any reason to get an SLI mobo?

Is there any reason to get one of these? is there a huge performance jump? Do games have to be coded to use it? Or just stick with a regular PCIexpress board?

I'm taking a wait-and-see approach right now. So far, it's not supported by every game, and many games simply won't even run at all with an SLI mobo/cards.

It's way too expensive right now. By the time you get the money for two cards and the motherboard, too much time has gone by, and you're better off just waiting for the next refresh of a single card.

there are 2 reasons I can think of to get an SLI mobo:
1. your an enthusiast and want to have the most elite setup around (2 6800GT's right?).
2. you have a ton of money and don't know what else to spend it on.

if you don't fall into one of those categories I would go with a one card solution.

Check and Check

ordering one next week, but make it 6800 ultras

:lol

ibuypower.com says it would ship the 1st week of Feb if I ordered it right now. So I guess they will be out in a few weeks.

Hell no. Many games don't benefit as if you're getting the performance of two times the card. Some games you get like a 10% increase.

In four months, you can get one video card for half the price of two 6800 Ultras, that'll run twice as fast all time time and support next gen video (whatever they call DX10 now). The "but then there will be something else in four more months argument" doesn't apply. At best there will just be an OC or PE of the same thing out of what comes out late spring/early summer.

Here's the best an SLI board will do for you:

But then:

So only do if you're filthy rich and run games at insane resolutions.

It's only worth it if you like to play games at 1600x1200 with 4x or 6x AA and 8x or 16x AF...

But dang, that is some major proformance it's getting..Seriously, it's worth it at those high of resolutions.. if you got the money...

Me personally, I rather get a dual cpu... but that's not for gaming reasons..

yeah, but when a better Nvidia card comes out you can get two of those also.. and there isnt a whole lot of practical use for it, except to take it to a LAN party and give all the other dorks a big chubby one.

And seriously, the reason the sli'd boards are not proforming that well at the lower resolution is because of the CPU... It's being held back.
