Any way to play original import PS2 games (without a chip)

Hello,

A friend just asked me if I knew a way to play PS2 games without getting the thing chipped. I've not actually imported any PS2 stuff before so I don't know of any developments on that front.

The PS2 is UK, and the guy got a US copy of Ico. Any ideaS?

HDLoader is the only thing I know of, though you have to put the game on the harddrive with a PC.

Ok, I've heard a lot of people mentioning HDLoader but I don't know much about it. Prepare for idiot-level questions!

Do you need to have the PS2 HDD? (if so, are these widely avaiable in UK and how much are they) Or do you transfer it from your PC HDD? How does it work? Does it just rip the game ISO to the HDD and then run it from there? I assume this is how it doesn't distinguish between regional disc formats.

You can run any app of the memory card. Cogswaploader and all the other apps that allow imports to be run, can be run that way.

Your issue is A) getting the file(s) on the memory card and B) Running the .elf file.

Both issues can be resolved using Action Replay Evo. You can use any usb storage device (flash drive, digital camera etc.) and get the files to run via the included media player (media player will boot .elf files... They're like .exe's for the PS2).

If you want to go the HDLoader route, you can do all the above, and run HDLoader off the Memory card which will essentially save you the $$$ you'd spend to buy HDLoader as it can be found on the web in .elf format for free.

You don't need the PS2 HDD. You do however, need one that fits the PS2 network adapter and is compatible.

For games that aren't your region, unless you are installing over the network to your Playstation2 (requires more than just a retail HD Loader disc), you have to put the Hard Drive you'll be putting in your PS2 into your PC or a USB Enclosure. Then you can install the PS2 game directly from your ICO CD to the hard drive. After that, you can take it out and connect it to your Playstation 2.

I was unaware of this. I now need an Action Replay Evo so that I can finally begin importing PS2 titles. Thanks DCB!
