Anybody get Tiger Woods DS yet?

Nope... I understand that Target will get it tomorrow, so I will get it tomorrow. :)

I'd love to hear impressions!

I can do a pretty good Beavis, Strongbad, Austin Powers, and Dr. Evil, if you want impressions. I can't do a Tiger Woods one though. I guess I could just look grumpy, wear all Nike gear, and get a hot blond to hang out with - that would pretty much cover it.

You are funny.

if it's anything like the gba version i'd stay farrrr far away from it. in fact, i don't there's been any decent port of tiger woods golf on any portable platform.

They could do some pretty cool stuff with the touch pad, like having you do the swing arc on it, or moving the stylus as straight as you can to replicate trying to put straight. It might make it hard as hell if they didn't do it right, but if they did, it'd be groovy.

These impressions are based on only 1 game played with the default golfer. I didn't mess with any player customization, so don't bother asking questions about that.

Courses available:
Pebble Beach
Kapalua Plantation
TPC at Sawgrass
St.Andrews
Couer D'Alene
Emerald Dragon(the only one of the 6 that is a fantasy course).

I played 18 at Pebble just to get an idea of the graphics and controls. Graphically I haven't played a better looking hand-held golf game. The course fly-bys and player animations are very good. There's sort of a blocky look to everything, but it's a Nintendo DS, don't expect Xbox graphics. The animations appeared to be pretty smooth all the time. You can click on the touch screen to instantly view any spot on the hole(very nice). Load times were very fast at all times. Audio was ...well, it's golf. Birds chirping, and a few claps here and there from the crowd (not visible).

Now onto the most important aspect of any golf game, the controls. I despise the stupid click-click-click method of games like Mario and Hot Shots. It's antiquated and lame. The analog swing method of Tiger Woods, Outlaw Golf, and Links on the consoles is much more intuitive, although allows for shooting very low scores when one has mastered the perfect swing technique. The method of swinging in TW-DS is quite different. I didn't read the manual, so I could be wrong on some of this, but apparently you just have to run the stylus along a swing meter as perfectly as possible to get a good swing. Apparently you must also be fluid in your timing to get good distance on the ball. There's also a power bad to the right of the swing meter that you can charge up before you hit. I shanked a lot of balls at first, but near the end of my round I was hitting a lot of straight drives, but shanking a lot of chips. You definitely have to work harder at getting a great shot in this game. The major disappointment to me was the putting. Just like in the console version, you get a caddie tip, move a curson, and in TW DS you then just press a button and putting then occurs on its own without any further input from you. That's lame. Why come up with this cool new swing mechanism and then completely ditch it once you hit the green? Stupid and lazy, if you ask me. Graphically, it's also very hard to read the greens despite there being a grid. So basically you just rely on the caddie tips, and then try to move the putting cursor appropriately. I can't say it enough how stupid the putting is. It doesn't completely ruin the game, but it is a letdown. Taking away swing control from the user is just wrong. But enough from me on that. You can decide for yourself if you like it or not.

I wanted to play Couer D'Alene, but it was locked. So apparently you have to go through some single player challenges or whatnot to open up more content.

All-in-all, I wouldn't say this game is worth the 40 dollar pricetag. 20 bucks, yes, 40, no. For an additional 10 bucks you could get the Xbox version which has many more courses, better graphics, and the ability to play online. But then again you can't play your Xbox in an elevator.

Yeah, I pressed start during play and there were no options for changing putting.

No RTEs. Player customization is pretty weak compared to Gameface in the console games. You can choose from about 3 hairstyles, 7 types of shirts(and change color), a few kinds of pants and shoes, 3 sizes of head, 3 body sizes, and you can wear a couple different kinds of hat. You can also change your skin tone. That's about it. I tried to give myself black hair, but couldnt find it. They had green, red and purple, but not black. Seemed odd (or I'm blind).

There's a legend tour split into 3 parts. Every event is locked until you complete the current objective and move on to the next. Only Pebble, Sawgrass, and St. Andrews are available from the start. You have to earn Coeur, Emerald and Kapalua.

I don't find it easy to score yet. I birdied a few holes, but also bogeyed many. I'm not getting 100 percent on my drives and I haven't figured out why yet. I played my first match against the CPU and it knocked it out of bounds twice on the first hole, but I was dormie 3 and it came back and beat me until the last hole where we tied and he lost. I see no way to adjust difficulty, but I haven't really looked hard at that. I can't speak of Multiplayer right now since I don't have my DS or the manual near me.

No, I know how to get the extra power. It's getting my regular swing to 100 percent that's the question right now. I believe it's a matter of timing the swing perfectly, which I haven't managed yet.

glad they brought the putting grid back since I like playing without caddie tips... still don't get why the took it out of Tiger 2005.

I work at GameRush and played it briefly on my DS while on break, but I actually had fun with it. It takes some getting used to at first but it is fun swinging with the stylus. I lost my strap but I think it may be better. The graphics were fair but didn't detract. It can be frustrating though getting the correct angle.

I seem to remember this game looking like butthole, but then again I am desperate for DS games.

Then again, I hate EA. What better game to begin my EA boycott with?

I reduced the size, but...umm...

BOYCOTT!

Just picked it up and have been playing for about 2 hours. I'm a sucker too for more games on my DS, plus I'm trying to hold back PSP import urges.

Seriously, imho it is not fun or worth the money. Even after just a couple hours it's definatly my least favorite DS game so far. BTW I have them all except Sprung, Ping pal, Feel the magic.

Graphics: very blah and tiny textures resulting in big blocks on screen grass. Golfer can only be male from what I see. Lots of texture seams as you pan around the hole, especially in the water. 6 courses. Jerky golfer after-the-shot animation.

Sound: really bad unless you enjoy looping 1 second samples of crowd, bird, and water washing on shore. :D

Gameplay: The swing system is very easy. You start your swing by putting the stylus however far up the bar you want to set the power, then move it through the arc to swing. The bad part... you can move the stylus very very slowly and still get 100% power becuase it's not speed the governs the swing but it's the point you set the stylus on the swing bar. Stupid , and a game breaker for me. Putting is automatic, the computer reads the green, you set the point to shoot for, and it swings and determines power itself. Boring.

I was originally looking forward to Rayman which was pushed back and then today I noticed they pushed back Zookeeper all the sudden into mid January. I was hoping this would hold me over since I love golf but it's going back tomorrow. Don't think I would pick this up in the bargain bin for $10.

Back to FF Dawn of souls for now.

Thanks for the impressions! Sounds like a definite miss for me.

I fling my feces in your general direction, EA!

And America needs more good DS games, this sucks!

I don't understand the logic above. Knowing that just about every 3D DS game will look like "butthole," why'd you buy the system?

Agreed. Hopefully we'll see some of those games that were announced a few months ago surface soon. I want info on Shin'en's shooter. Can't remember the name right now.

Uh, for the 2D DS games? And the fun ones like Made in Wario?

And Mario 64 does not look like butthole, it's fine.

Mario DS looks wretched. Come on. I guess it depends on where your standards lie.

Dude can I have some of that high quality crystal meth you're smoking? That must be some killer shit man.

Because if you honestly think Mario DS looks wretched the only plausible explanation is that you're hallucinating.

did any of you actually expect EA to produce a decent handheld sports game? seriously, when it comes to the handheld market they're only in it for the extra $$$$. EA can swallow a bratwurst.

Put your money towards importing Sawaru Made In Wario instead. I can't stop playing it. :)

I already ordered it (and Driller), but it hasn't come yet. :-/

I love video golf games & already beat Mario Golf GBA, so I was hoping Tiger Woods would be cool.

Actually, EA can buy a bratwurst company, a few models, a 30-second spot on tv, then pay you $50,000 to swallow a bratwurst.

In the EA offices, they call that "Friday".

I agree with DHGamer's impressions completely. Picked it up yesterday. The thing that disappointed me the most was the jerky animation. Every other game I have for the DS is pretty smooth so it came as a big suprise to me. Also I've noticed that more often than not the caddy tip comes back as "unavailable". Add that to the fact that its really hard to read the green and you end up with a lot of two or three putts. I'm going to give it another try later tonight but very disappointing so far.

I haven't played it, but I imagine it looks better than Tiger Woods DS, too.

They might as well renamed the game Golden Sun Golf!

I am so clever.

Best golf game available, handheld or console.
Ugh. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is leagues more fun. I think people just knock it because there was always some trend that the portable Mario Golf was better than the console version. This time around that's not true.

and your point is? EA's buying power doesn't mean shit when it comes to quality of their handheld sports games. if you're actually defending them, why don't you post some englightening impressions for me.

otherwise, continue on getting d*k slapped by EA's polish sausage.

Relax, it was a joke.

So it's an exact conversion of the console versions of Tiger Woods, then.

I picked it up a couple days ago. The interface is so intuitive. All the pulldown menus and even the swinging itself are accessed with the stylus. It's like handheld gaming crack.

I loved mario golf. Not too keen on the Advance version though. I must give minna no golf portable a few more hours. Then we'll see if the king has been dethroned.
