Anyone Else Can't Stand 'Christmas Story'?

This movie is on three channels, all simultaneously, with one or two of the stations playing it for 24 hours.

Last year they did this with 'Die Hard' except Die Hard is an actual good.... great.... Christmas movie.

Even as a kid I could never stand Christmas Story. Only really funny part was the Chinese restaurant scene.

It has to be one of the most annoying Christmas movies ever.

At least I found a couple stations playing Ghostbusters II and the Back to the Future movies.

I like it a lot but I only need to watch it maybe once or twice each year, my all time favorite Christmas movie though would be National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

I didn't care for it much as a teenager, but revisiting it at 35 after getting married and having a child... wow.

It's a really sweet homage to childhood and to life.
And the writing is incredibly sharp and pleasing.

So many scenes are pitch perfect, especially the dad gesturing to Ralphie to go check for one last present.
Or when the mom goes to bat for her son after the fight and distracts the dad.

Beautiful movie. Timeless even. Shows you how people are people are people no matter when.

We still doing this? Every scene in that movie is classic in some way, so no matter where you jump in the movie is instantly entertaining. It’s not the best Christmas movie ever but it’s up there and I appreciate the tradition.

Welp, guess I'm the only one who "hates" it.

Ghostbusters 2 had quite a few Nintendo references though as I sit here watching this drunk.

I just re-watched it too.

It wasn't as funny as I remember it but still good. I love Randy Quaid.

The only time I ever enjoyed this flick is not seeing any TV after coming out of 3 months of AIT (US Army Infantry training). I could have been watching any movie at that point and it would have been fucking great. It captures a late 60's vibe that's boomer as fuck, but I can't hate on that shit cause my chips are all in. Rock Flag and Eagle, also you'll put your eye out with that thing, kid.

Classic moments:

Ralphie realizing his Little Orphan Annie decoder was just trying to sell him more Ovaltine. Important life lesson!!

Everything with the bully, the Johnny Rotten looking kid wearing a coon skin cap, with his short loudmouth sidekick. Future Mad Max villains these two. When they get their comeuppance it is a thing of joy.

Mom trying the soap in her own mouth after sending Ralphie to bed. Also her reactions to Ralphie trying to feel up the lamp.

The insanity of their visit with Santa and all the screaming kids.

The looks the dad gives, especially when giving his kid the same gun he had when he was a kid. That’s pride.

Dad trying to sneak some of that beautiful roast a la Homer Simpson before it gets destroyed by those mysterious dogs.

The Chinese restaurant at the end. “Fa ra ra ra rah” and “it’s smiling at me” the guy chops the head off the duck and puts it in his pocket!

That ending shot of the parents watching snow out the window. Pure unfiltered uncynical nostalgia.

Love it. I watch it a few times during the marathon but then it gets old. Always come back to it the next year though. It really is one of those timeless Christmas flicks.

What? No, man. No. It's a great film, it's fun to watch while opening gifts on Christmas morning because you don't need to pay close attention. You can walk away for a few and catch the next bit and still get a chuckle.

That said, the books are even better. Each little vignette in the movie gets its own chapter, and it's not all about Christmas. In fact, the holiday parts are spread out over several books. They're more just a collection of short stories about him growing up. My favorite is the 4th of July episode.

It's the ultimate Christmas movie. Very honest and genuine. Love the parents. Love Ralphie. Love his friends. It's a perfect Christmas movie.

It is a perfect movie. As a kid I liked it well enough but never understood its genius until I was in my 30s.

I love it, a look back to a better time. The narrator is perfect and the family is charming and a lot of it reminds me a lot of my youth, I love the portrayals of all the Christmas traditions, setting the tree up, opening presents, dinner, going to visit santa at the mall, it covers the holiday experience well.

But Die Hard has explosions! Yay!

Christmas isn’t around often yes I don’t want to see it on three channels but it’s expected it was awesome to see in the theater.

Can't stand it, or It's sequel.
Aw lawd there was a sequel?

PoS unenjoyable christmas movie for me. It was cringy af when I was a kid.
I remember back in the day everyone was talking about it and quoting. It was "cool" and kind of "edgy" for its time and I think that added to the annoying aspects of it.

I really like it. It’s nice to have on in the background on Christmas Day because it doesn’t demand all my attention. I can drop in anytime and enjoy it for a few minutes. It’s got so much nostalgia for me that I’m not able to judge whether it’s actually any good. But I like it and so does my son, who is 5, which has taken it to a new level for me.
