FUCK, I just realized the new resume i've been sending out for the past few weeks had a typo in it. Damn it :(

Aye, I had that happen to me too! I sent off a resume, went back to change it for another job I was applying for and noticed a couple typos! Lesson learned: Always get someone else to read it over.

I'm willing to refer anyone who has experience with design, development, project management or marketing/advertising consulting experience for a job in Toronto. My interactive agency is hiring.

We have some pretty massive accounts and are growing like crazy. We also have offices in several countries (Canada, US, a bunch in Europe, India, Australia).

Ah, most things that I'm interested in doing but don't have a full education/experience for. :\

I have pretty much zero post secondary education.

If you have design and/or development skills then education is not nearly as important. It helps if you have experience and/or a decent portfolio though.

Long time lurker here. Been trying to find something for the longest time and I finally ended the streak of unemployment. Not knocking freelance since it kept my pockets padded at times, but it was time I got the career back on track.

To those still struggling to find something, don't give up hope. What you're looking for is definitely out there, just keep spamming those attacks.

Congrats! What are you doing with Apple? My friend interned with Apple at Cupertino with the web development team but he ultimately decided on staying in NYC. He works for the NY Times now.

They're launching this new support team and I hopped on board (making it sound easy, there were like, 4 interviews). Was thiiiiiiis close to moving back to NYC actually. Only reason I'm not is - of course - because of the job. I'm hoping to eventually get back there while staying with the company, but we'll see.

I applied to tons of places both high and low, and yet Apple of all people were the ones that snatched me up. Go figure.

Unemployed since dec 31 2009 (awesome Christmas present from my previous employer) Suicide-y everyday, but thanks to my loving girlfriend whom I live with, I deal with it. No job leads, dead end interviews, and about a 1:120 call back ratio to all the applications I send out. Temp agencies are NO HELP; registered with 5 of them, have yet to receive a single phone call for a job. Awesome. I mean, not one Customer Service rep or Admin Asst or General office position that is right for me at all? Really?!

I feel like a fucking bum. Everyday I force myself to wake up with my gf so I can feel productive by making her breakfast and lunch for work, hit the gym for about 2 hours for no reason because I still look like shit, then job search for a few hours while fighting back rage because there is nothing new on the dozens of place I look.

This goes on Mon-Fri.

I'm totally lost about what else to do...College degree amounted to nothing but debt I cannot pay back, depression doesn't go away, I literally have no friends, no outlet for anything...i do play video games, but I feel like a bum while I do because I should be working instead.

Fuck this, I'm moving to Canada.

it is not so much better up here

I have an interview today at 2pm EST. I have studied the information packet they gave me and I still feel unprepared. It's for a sales position for a very big company. Any suggestions GAF?

I really don't know what to do with myself anymore. I can't seem to get my foot in the door anywhere...I get the feeling my girlfriend is beginning to resent my unemployed ass.

Depressing times.

Hang in there! I'm dealing with the same thing. So much pressure from family too.

google interview questions, write them out and write out point-form answers

http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/questions/answers/sales-questions.asp

ex:
Have you ever had to change your whole customer approach because the one you were using did not work?
What the interviewer is really asking is: "Are you adaptable when things don´t work one way?" Give a specific example in which approach didn´t work out as expected and then talk about the steps you too in order to adapt yourself and the out coming result.

i find that always helps to boost my confidence going into an interview. i actually wanted to start a thread where gaffers suggest some of the best/most comprehensive questions to be prepared for in an interview... havent bothered though lol

Thanks man, but it's really wearing me down. With only a bit of college under my belt so far, it's difficult finding a job I can be remotely proud of. I had an interview with a bank the other week, but they went with someone else. :(

I get the "went with someone else" too. I have found taking a day off just to breathe and relax does wonders for me. I usually take walks and read. Just remember, a job is a job now. Piles on the experience for a better one in the future.

Thanks for the link! I work retail now so I have good experience and stories for questions. I think I'm just nervous lol.

Unemployed since june 2009, I tried setting up a shop, but it's not working out due to scarcity of funding. Computer repair shop, electronics repairs, graphic design (Logos, Business Cards, Websites, Posters, and others...) I have acquired new customers, but they're not enough to make a living out of this...

I have experience in Banking IT, having been a cobol/SQL/DB2/CICS programmer, computer programming in general, and it looks like there's just no demand for this were I live (I'm in Europe).
I also have a lot of other experiences with various operating systems and applications, been working with computers my whole life.

I also have experience in customers/suppliers relationships management and accounting.

I am even willing to relocate to another country if there's a good opportunity (France, Switzerland,Austria preferred) but I don't know how to go about doing it...

I'm at an impasse. :/
It's really depressing especially because I know I am able and capable of doing a lot of things, but there's no opportunity...

I just called regaridng feedback abouut applications i made. they said they got about 300 applications. Well, that's a job i ain't gonna get.

I work the front desk for a corporate office building. I often get walk ins from the bus stop from across the street. They ask if we are hiring. I tell them about the website and I never see anyone write it down.

This is why no one accepts walkin applications. It's sad because I'll also have older people come in and basically plead with me to drop off a resume.

On the other side of the coin, we are interviewing people all day long. There is a constant stream of people showing up who are invited for an interview. Simple things can make you stick out.

1) Show up 15 minutes early. People have jobs to do and if you show up an hour early, you have become a burden on them. 15 minutes is the right amount of time.

2) Look and smell clean. Should be self explanatory.

3) Smile. People want to hire people who will fit in. They want you to be part of a team. Be personable. Show some confidence.

4) You will probably be tested, so don't let that catch you off guard.

5) Bring a copy of your resume in a folder. Have a pen as well.

Good Luck.

The axe man cometh for me. I figure I have a week... week and a half before I'm out of work. I'm starting to get stressed. I'm looking around, but not seeing much in my field.

I know something will happen, but it still sucks.

All day I want to go home and play video games. Now I'll be playing video games all day and all I'll want to do is work.

of all the jobs i've had, i've only had to interview for one. it seems cliche and i'm sure you all know it already, but friends/connections are the best way to get a job.

I'm really scared. I work at the corporate office for a company that is basically dying. Similar to the way Blockbuster is dying. It could be any day now. And the worst part is, in June 2010 I was laid off from my last job. That caused me to be late on a lot of bills and I am still not fully recovered. If I don't find something else before I get shit-canned I will be financially ruined.

if you get laid off you should be eligible for unemployment, right?

Yes, but you only get 70% of your income. I am still behind on my payments from the last time I was laid off. If it happens again I will be ruined. I am going into full panic mode.

Got denied today because I didn't sound enthousiastic enough about the job, even when they were sure I was qualified to do it. Frustrating because I was quite keen on this job. I need to work on my presentation skills I guess. I tend to become very formal when entering a formal procedure like an application.

Well at least I can start another job within my company next monday. I'm not unemployed but looking to switch jobs.

Man, I'm very sad for you guys without jobs. If any of you are in or around the central Arkansas area, consider Acxiom Corp. (www.acxiom.com) We hire a lot of tech-related jobs, as well as others, and just in central AR alone right now there are over 200 openings. We also have offices in Downer's Grove, IL and a few other places around the globe.

I've worked here 12 years as an Oracle DBA and really like my job.

Hiring managers like passionate people. Even if you're passionate about something tangentially related to what the company does, people see passion as an indicator of motivation and future performance, whether it actually is or not.

There's a lot of disdain, and deservedly so, for hiring practices that are counter-intuitive, illogical, etc. However industries are slow to change, and institutional hiring (boy's club's, hiring only from top schools, asking the same dumb questions (how many gas stations in new york, etc) is not going to go away. You, on the other hand, can change, you can put a smile on your face, you can research the company before your interview and talk about why you love what they do etc. It's sad to say but you need to play ball to have a shot...

Went in for an interview today, and I think I did okay, other than fumbling a bit on some questions (but I think they expect people coming in for interviews to be nervous, so...).

The guy interviewing me told me the hiring timeline, as well as when they want to start training and opening the restaurant, so I hope that's a good sign?

However, he also said it was competative and they've had a lot of strong candidates.

I guess I'm on the bubble? =/ I don't really know what these things mean, haha. I haven't done interviews too much before (I was at one job for a long, long time).

Glad i don't have a job with the gears of war 3 beta, and having sunny ass days outside.

When i have a job, the thought of "fuck i have work tomorrow" ruins my day.

this is why when i need a job, i apply to tons of jobs that i dont even want. cause then i get interview experience. and sometimes you need to suck it up and take a job you dont want anyways. but mostly the interview experience.

Where do you guys typically look for jobs? I usually check craigslist, carerbuilder, and monster.

I was just about to ask this myself. Does anyone know what are some good places to look? I've been using primarily Kijiji.ca and i've had so-so success getting replies, but I need more options. Getting desperate here :(

I've been unemployed for about 8 months now. I search via career builder, Craigslist, and yahoo jobs. I also go out on foot sometimes, ya know, hit the pavement. Some employers still do paper job applications.

I've got a interview with MACY's for a retail position next week. I'd like to say "I'm excited" but that would be a flat out lie. I hate retail. It's all I know. I've come the conclusion I'll be in retail forever. I lack ambition, perseverance, and I like to procrastinate -- dispite all that, I am in desperate need of a job... any kind of job at this point. Granted my piss poor attitude, I do appreciate any opportunity that comes my way. I can only blame myself for how unfulfilling my life is.

get into the service industry. waiting on tables and bartending can be fun shit, depending on the place, and co workers are cool, or they get fired, lol. pays better than retail too.

Very true, though to be honest, I'm just kind of crazy when it comes to interviews. I practiced responses last night, over and over and over. Read the ones I'd written down before going in. Yet the second the interview begins, my mind is GONE and I just stammer my way through.

It really sucks, cause when I'm just interacting with people, I'm very personable, friendly, pretty well spoken, etc. But interviews, I'm pretty sure I come across as a borderline idiot. :(

thats why hedging everything on only jobs you want builds up pressure to perform to insane levels. also i'd say memorize bullet points, not actual responses. that way you can jump around however you want while stammering out your responses

Thanks for the suggestion. I've heard fun stories from co-workers at previous jobs about their experience busing tables, bartending, etc. doesn't sound too bad. I've been sort of avoiding them because I'm not much of a people person.

I am, and it sucks so much. The thing that's really irritating is that everything is online these days so I can't give a good impression to gain interest. If they called my previous employers (who all liked me and spoke highly of me) they would hear that I am great, yet on paper I don't look good enough to investigate. I don't even need anything really nice, just something to save some money to get through school and carve out a career path in Korea, which I have tons of connections for... when I finish my education. Damn it sucks coming from a poor-ass family.

Thank you for the advice. I'm gonna apply this next time I (hopefully) get an interview. :)

I had to come back and bump, to update my situation after posting the other day. As of today I am now employed at a great job, and it was as simple as stars lining up.

Don't give up on the job search, don't skip that one listing, do not get discouraged. The most unlikely situation will arise, of 100 resumes sent, that one person will see yours and everything will follow suit. And please do a search for recruiting agencies in your area for your field of interest. Nowadays, these companies are using them as filters. The recruiters have their own incentive and it works in your advantage. FWIW I am in a trade field (design) so I admit it might be a bit easier for me.

Anyway, I've just been thru hell, just got out and I believe you will too, but only if you stay aggressive.

Indeed.com is a good list of jobs imo. Do a search for your field and see what comes up.

Well, interview went great the other day and the 3 managers like me a lot. Had them laughing and one of my buddies said good things about me to them. Alas, HR screwed me royally and said I wasn't qualified enough! 5 years experience and only 1 year was preferred! GAF I want to RAAGE on HR. What to do now?
