anyone else unemployed?

a month into the process and interview number 3 is tomorrow with a company I applied to. I asked a friend who works there and he seems to think that I am in making it this far.

I think I asked this before, but I can't find the post. Where do you guys normally look for jobs? I'm working at a hotel right now, but I barely get any hours. I'd like to get a better paying job.

Fuck liberal arts degrees

Well, most of the "entry level" jobs for HS degrees only are massive amounts of phone work around here it seems. And while I can do those, I have to use TTY or other work arounds to do that and it's a huge hassle in general for those employers and I can see why they skip over me.

Disabled people like me have it 20x harder in general on getting employers on board and then you have the shitty market that's currently in place and it's a double whammy of suck.

Just about any job in my industry can be found on webhostingtalk.com in the employment offers section, but unless you're interested in technical support or selling web hosting, I'm not sure that'd be up your alley. 99% of the jobs there are work from home, though.

I know my company (at 68 employees remotely around the world currently) posts there all the time when openings are available.

I doubt most of you know anything about web hosting, or system administration, but just throwing that out there.

So a month later after I got terminated from my job. I found out I've just been denied unemployment. FUCK MY LIFE!!!!!! Now I'm really worried wtf I'm gonna do now. :(

Yup. That's a basic generic rejection email. In fact, I think it's worded exactly like the last rejection email I received. And it had a "no reply" email address too.

Nothing else to do but move on.

At least they had the courtesy to send you a rejection letter. I reckon I've received maybe 10 out of 100 at best from all the places I've applied to. I mean, if they can't even bother letting you know they're not interested in you, what guarantee is there that they even so much as glanced at my resume or gave me any consideration at all?

PS Thank god for this thread and commiseration <3

I still don't even know if I have unemployment or not. They said 4-6 weeks to know and here we are in the 6th week with no communication of anything.

Anyway, I started my new job as a warehouse selector last night. It was a 10 hour classroom orientation day. We have to go through a whole week of learning safety, then we get evaluated and they decide if we can go into the training. Then 6 weeks of training, then they decide if we can actually have the job. It's all paid training, but it's a little scary to think that I could NOT end up with the job after 7 weeks of training.

Thought I'd jump into this thread. Been applying for almost two months, filling out multiple applications per day, received maybe 3 responses (rejections). Sucks.

I've got a B.A. in Communication, M.A. in Public Relations which I received in May. I've been using LinkedIn, Indeed, and a couple PR sites for my job search.

I like Indeed too. I have a LinkedIn profile, but I just never go on that site. I will try using it more. I'm underemployed!

What were the circumstances of your termination?

Argh! So yesterday my 3rd round interview was cancelled and I was told they will make the decision without me needing to go in. I was supposed to hear yesterday but never did. Just got an email asking when they can call me today to talk! Still have no idea what's going!

That sounds promising I would think. Good luck.

THANKS!! I hope so. It's tough out there, I've applied to over 30 places and only a few even acknowledged my submission. It does sound pretty promising and I am hoping to land it because I'll be learning newer business models compared to my last job so it will be a nice welcomed challenge and newer set of skills and experience.

I have an interview on Tues.!

Any tips on what I should know about the company? Just their general mission statement/values or is that not enough?

I lucked out with previous jobs since they never asked this question in the interview.

I'm conceding defeat. The experience I had for the past 6 years is doing diddly squat for me.

Just applied to a city college for their respiratory therapy program. I'd try for my masters but I was a slacker in college and I have a sub 3.0 GPA.

I feel like I've wasted so much of my life.

From my experience they don't really quiz you on what you know about the company. But a good idea would be to ask what the company culture is like, what you can expect a typical workday to be like, etc.

They will always ask if you have any questions, and if you don't, it may set off alarm bells if you just go "nope".

Oh god this, this is the worst!
It's to the point now where each day I feel the time eeking away and can't help but picture all the years, months and days combined that have been an absolute waste of time. It pains me to look at old pictures now because I just agonise over what I should have done differently at that particular time.

I always try to roll with the 'tomorrow's a new day' mentality and indeed it's Monday tomorrow and I'm going to try again with a raft of applications but this shit is getting me so down now. I have a diploma and degree and got rejected for a job at the post office. What the fuck is that?

Rejected from Urban Outfitters despite a fantastic interview. I was with two other girls, neither of which had any experience besides waiting tables; I have years of inventory, merchandising, customer service, cash handling, loss prevention, etc... The interviewer seemed thrilled with what I could offer, and yet one of the girls got the job.

brb, shooting myself in the fucking face.

I've given up on life! Stuck with the parentils, desperate for any job (sent my resume to 200+ places, gotten a few calls but nothing serious), almost nothing in the bank so I can't go out, and stuck in the student loan jail with one of them useless degrees and never did any internships, or worked for most of my college life since I did not feel the need.

Can't even talk to friends, since I have nothing to talk about other than being unemployed. I've even resorted to drink by myself, something I never do.

Welp, I made it through safety training.

Now I have a 6-8 week training/evaluation period to make it through and then I officially have the job!

Annoyingly, the office job I got rejected for has sent me two work at home offers claiming the person they hired instead of me couldn't handle them. I kind of want to tell them to shove it.....

I'd like to believe that's not a legitimate issue here, though maybe I'm just being naive. It's an odd bias (or recklessness) that would push an employer to hire an unskilled, unproven applicant over the opposite, particularly when the hiring managers were themselves female and the store staff is quite varied.

It sucks, but these stores usually want good looking people working the stores and wearing their apparel. They're not so much employees that stock shelves rather than models for their clothing. Either that, or one of these girls was friends with those in charge and they interviewed other people for the hell of it to give the appearance they were doing their due diligence.

I considered that, too, but there are a number of things said before and during the interview that make me pretty damn sure it had nothing to do with what any of us were wearing or them hiring a friend (the one who got the job said she just moved to Seattle from Louisiana...)

I dunno, the whole thing just pisses me off and it feels like every interview ends with me getting fucked over by someone less qualified. I'm really getting scared now because I've been looking for nine months and only have money to last through mid-September.

My friend was saying that. Wherever he goes, they always will hire a pretty girl over him, even if she's dumb as dirt and unqualified. I hate to think employers assume that customers would rather talk to a dumb person who's attractive than a smart one who isn't. But now that I think about it, this does seem to be the case. I try not to shop at places where the people seem to have an IQ in the double digits. so you either have to be attractive or have connections...

After reading this thread, I'm so glad I didn't go to college. My sister wasted so much time and money there, and she makes more money at a golf course than any place that would require her degrees. Of course, she's pretty...

I'm still unemployed, and living in Detroit, the city with the worst job atmosphere in the country, doesn't help. my parents are sick so I can't leave either. And with this horrible economy, crime is going up. We just our metal garage door stolen. Times are hard. :/

Its retail. People want good looking people to represent the clothing that they sell.

People tend to think that the Abercrombie and Fitch lawsuit was about not hiring Asians. To an agree it was but it was more about looking for attractive people. One of my friends was one of the guys who sued and got a shit ton of money. Hell, I was standing outside of the shop when he inquired about an application form. He was an ugly motherfucker. However, my sister is fairly attractive and she got a job with them no problem.

I've been largely unemployed since January and I start my new job tomorrow. It's a great opportunity but it's almost irritating that after 6 months of busting my ass and only a few small contract jobs to show for it, the job I landed came totally unsolicited. I got a call from a technical recruiting agency who saw my resume up on DICE and they set me up with an interview.

A few tips from me after looking for so long.
-You resume is your life line. Have several people review it and tell you what they think if possible.
-Again, if possible, use a staffing agency. Lots of people will tell you it doesn't help and the agencies are only out for themselves. Well lots of people get mad because they think that an agency is some guarantee of work. ***The biggest problem you could face is being out of work so long that people don't want to hire you. Temp work, contract work or just actively seeking through a staffing company is a very good way to show them you are trying to find full time work.
-The same skills won't get you a new better job, so try to add active certs and classes if you can. Find you what people are looking for and start learning about it. I got my A+ cert not because I needed the knowledge but because I knew companies kept asking for them or suggesting them

The single biggest piece of BS I have seen with the job crunch is companies basically folding 2-3 jobs worth of responsibilities into a single low-end job. I'm starting at a good company as as tier 1 tech support. Tier 1 is very basic and has some very defined responsibilities. I saw companies asking for a tier 1 help desk person, but they wanted that person to knew exchange server, active directory, windows sever, AND know sharepoint. They essentially wanted an experience sharepoint developer to be the help desk person and get paid less than either position should make. It's kind of crazy.

Too bad I won't have time to surf GAF all day but it's damned good to be working again. Good luck to everyone finding a job you want.

I've had this job for almost 2 months now and haven't received what I was suppose to receive on when I started the job. Yes I've asked when that would be but they seem to be hush about it. They even had the nerve to say I didn't work the full 80 hours when I worked a day without a lunch so they could be in meetings all day. Quitting soon to focus on soon (like it makes a difference the way the economy is).

Everything just looks terrible for us..

I've had a couple of friends that had to move to a new state just so that they could start a career where their bachelors degree came into play. One is in NY and the other moved to Washington. I live in Memphis TN and it really seems as though its damn near impossible to find a good paying job that doesn't require 10+years experience, Masters degree, Knowledge of 20 different programming languages,3 years hard labor in Guantanamo Bay, etc.

Gaf, I'm unemployed and have been told this is the place to come. I am 21 and live in western MA with a hard working father and a mother who is also unemployed. My father just recently took the last loan he could as it was his only option. This loan may last us through the winter, but after that, should things stay this way, we'll be homeless. Everyday I search craigslist for available jobs but being as I could never afford college my options are limited and I don't have much hope. My father is also looking for work but it's equally as hard due to age and time taken up by his fulltime job(which is rumored to be running another round of layoffs). Is there anything I can do to stop things? I looked into the emergency homeowner loan but we weren't eligible as we paid the mortgage the last three months.

Western MA, huh. APPLY AT C & S in Hatfield.

One of the big questions I was asked in almost all of my interviews is why you want to work at X company.

I would usually read up on the company website for any major news; read about if they are expanding, what they do, etc. You don't need a detailed report on it, but they like to see that you applied and want to work there for who they are, not just that they will give you a paycheck.

I've sent my resume to numerous different staffing/temp agencies and was told by each one that I wasn't qualified enough and they wouldn't be able to find anything for me. This was for dumb-as-a-rock type of work: data entry, typing, filing, mailrooms, etc.

At this point, the city of Seattle is basically telling me "WE DON'T WANT YOU, GO AWAY,"

My advice is to apply anyways. The interviews I've gotten have really just been applying even though I didn't fit the description. On one occasion, I *accidentally* applied to a job that wanted like 7 years experience with Java and I had neither. I think at the time of applying, it didn't have like any requirements. Then later they changed them to the 7 years experience etc. The recruiter then called and said, "Oh but we're looking for people with 1 and 2 and C++."

I have an onsite interview coming up at a company and I started by applying for a position that I didn't fit. I think it really depends on what recruiter your resume happens to go to. For the position I'm interviewing for soon, the recruiter took it upon himself to find something for me at the company. I can't express how thankful I am to him for doing that for me. He truly is the best recruiter I've ever worked with and every recruiter should try to be as human as him during their job. After my whole ordeal looking for a job, I've become so pessimistic about the recruiters.

Yeah, I feel ya man. I don't really have a lot of hope either with the whole thing. Luckily since my dad's disabled we get a steady income, but as far as finding a job, it's awful.

Both of my sisters moved out of Michigan for a while, thats how bad it was. And when I was working, the conditions were horrible. The managers incompetent and everyone was nasty and rude to the new employees. I'm glad I quit.

I'm having a really hard time finding a Job as I'm disabled and looking for some kind of desk job/work at home career. I'd really like to do gaming journalism as writing (I have a BA in English with a certification in editing and publication) and video games are a passion of mine. If anyone has any suggestions for me, I'd really appreciate it. I need a job really badly.

That'a really strange. All the staffing places I saw would pretty much take anyone, it's not like it hurt to have the people on file. They would test your words pre minute and computer knowledge but they would at least keep your name and resume for potential contracts.

What companies have you tried applying to? I have a friend who got a tour of IGN's offices and might have an interview or something coming up. I can ask him if he did anything special other than apply.

Sent off a resume for a QA position yesterday at around 4:50. I had a good feeling about it. 5 minutes later I had a response back asking if I was available for a phone interview. Have it booked for tomorrow afternoon. I'm nervous/excited. This will be my first interview in almost 5 years.

Well GAF, I had a great interview yesterday. I felt real good about the company until the guy told me that benefits are on hold until later this year, and I'd be working 10hrs more a week.

No offer yet, but the guy said it would come soon. He actually said that they were hiring 4 new people, and I'd be the first one hired because I could help immediately.

I'm ready to move from my current company, but this new one doesn't feel right. No benefits is a huge letdown, even though I could go no my wife's healthcare.

I think I've held out from posting here before, but here I am now. I was let go at the end of March out of a game company (you may find out who if you do some digging, but it didn't trend anywhere as newsworthy). So for the past few months I've been brushing up on some skills and trying out some iOS development.

My question to you all: what do I end up categorizing this "period" in my resume/linkedin profile? Do I "put in a job title", along with projects completed? Or just leave it out, and make a note of this "learning/training" period as something else?

I'll be joining this thread before long fellas. The company I work for announced they were moving our operation half way across the country. It's a good labor job. About $45k/yr with very good insurance and 401k contributions (15% of your annual salary).

I've got student loans in default. I'm also in the over/under qualified position. Everything in my field of study requires experience. Employers know there are people in my field of work who are looking for a job and will accept entry level pay. So that leaves new graduates like myself out in the cold. I've been on all the recruiting websites for over a year without even a nibble.

They're working us like crazy because they have a pretty good severance package hanging over our heads to keep us from quitting. We're only doing around 40% of the volume we were last year (the new factory is already running production, I think we're just getting what they can't handle in a 5 day week).

So they have us in there working 11 to 12 hour days 3 days a week instead of spreading it over a 5 day work week. Personally I'd rather have 5 easy days instead of 3 hell days. Some people are happy with the long weekends. I dunno. Tensions are high. People are fighting all over the factory. Some verbal fights, some fist fights. Just a bad place to be.

Oh, and I've got 4 kids.

Had my first day of a 4 week work placement today, so while i'm still very much unemployed at least i'll get something to put on my CV when it's done.
I'm working in a library and making the transition from spending my days doing nothing to working a full day is pretty jarring. It's kind of funny that the only two jobs i've been able to attain this year have been temporary work placements which involve working for free, such a lovely job market over here in South East England.
