Got a job offer, was told to ring back when decided. Asked for number off cousin yesterday evening and was told to ring in the morning. Rang just before 11 today and was told to ring back in an hour as he was in the meeting. Rang back at just after 12, and no answer. Ran again at half past and no answer. At this point I'm just going to phone very hour. Hopefully I'll get a phone call back.

Been offered a 3-month unpaid internship with a smaller TV production company. I'm to expect 45+ hours a week with a 1.5h commute either way, and no 100% guarantee of a paid position in the area I want afterward. The wording was "our goal is to find you paid work after 3 months if you kick ass.". Quote.

I probably would have leapt on this right after school in May, but I've been interning and volunteering my time all of 2010 across tons of different shows. This seems like such a kick in the nuts. All my friends are warning me away from this one.

I just don't know what to do, but I'm sick to death of volunteering my time with no compensation.

As some random internet guy, I don't feel like I should really be advising people in potentially life changing choices.

Unpaid internships have a role but are abused among employers; dangling the carrot of paid work so you generate value for the company in the mean time is a kick in the nuts. I'm not saying don't do it, just be careful.

I started looking for work outside of New York now. Pittsburgh and big cities in Virginia. Pretty much depleted my savings that took my seven years to save in 18 months. wish me luck guys, I'm gonna need it.

Just keep in mind that if you're doing actual work that they will use, it's illegal for them to not pay you.

Totally. There are just too many people willing to do it for free that I'd have no leverage to demand anything. The illegality of it sadly doesn't matter, and I'm no position to fight that problem yet. :(

I'm employed now! It's a MBA in another city of Spain (not Valencia) + internship at a big company. The wage is not great (but I don't pay the MBA), so it's an excellent oportunity! The internship is for an entire year, and at the end they will probably recruit me, and if they don't, some company in the sector and that city will probably do.

I'm very happy at this point. The bad side is that this is Spain, so they want me to move there on 19th December without any information (they will give me the information that day), so it's going to be only one week of work and then back to Valencia again!. But it's the same city my girlfriend has found a job, so I'm not complaining!

Good luck out there folks!

HUZZAH!

A friend was able to get me an opportunity to volunteer/shadow in his IT department! I won't get paid jack shit but it's a great chance to get the actual work experience that I'm lacking for my career. He even said, it's a great way to great my foot in the door with their company (or another company) and may lead to a hiring position down the road!

I start tomorrow and I'm looking forward to learning a great deal of material!

^_^

so guys i went to university from 06-09, dropped out, went to college from 09-now, think ill be dropping out next semester

should i include it in the education section on my resume? heretofore i listed it as 2006-present and 09-present, saying im planning on finishing university when im done college. now after so many wasted years i think its time to take some time off school, and not sure whether to even include an 'education' section on the resume or not.

the kinds of jobs i'll be applying for are just hospitality serving/bartending jobs, in which i have 5 years relevant experience

For a job like that, it probably won't matter, but in the future if you try to get a more professional job, that'll be a large chunk of time unaccounted for.

But if you went twice and didn't finish, it doesn't look great. Better to leave it off, I thin.

You've got five years of school under your belt, how far can you be from graduating? Suck it up and get the degree, you'll be happy you did.

That's a hell of a hole to explain. Better finish and get the degree if at all possible.

Though I don't know how hard that would be in this case, if it's nigh impossible, perhaps it's better to cut losses and do something that works.

I got a part-time job now, but not enough to get out of the rut I'm currently in. Don't know how long this will last but I'm still looking for full time. I've gotten to the point where I'm thinking of just rolling back around and restarting applications to everywhere I actually tried... or moving.

Don't put dates on your education section. Just put education and the degree in progress if you MUST have it. Otherwise dump it from the resume.

As of 8:30 this morning, I join the ranks of gaf's unemployed. Just got laid off from my job due to lack of work coming in. I can call them in March to see if I can get it back for when work picks up again, but it's not a guarantee.

Got an interview in 2 weeks for a job that a fellow White House intern passed my way. Kind of encouraging me to keep going, as I had zero motivation to keep looking for a real job after my last rejection.

Jesus, that's a rotten deal. It's amazing the audacity that some employers have when it comes to "offering" internships. That's not a fucking internship -- that's slave labor that they will 100% profit from.

I did an internship with a multimedia news website earlier this year and it was unpaid and required a 45 minute commute each way (in horrible traffic). However, mine was only two days a week (10 hour days) and I STILL found it excessively expensive/time consuming. It was good experience, yes, but I almost went broke considering how much I paid in gas and how much money I lost out on from not being able to use that time to work at my (paying) retail job.

If it's work you love and you are financially able to do it, I think it *might* be worth it. But if you are even a little bit unsure or worried about money while doing this, then stay the fuck away. Because once you're a month or so into it and you realize what an insane sacrifice it is -- all to add a few more lines to your resume, basically -- you'll become bitter as fuck and your slave labor performance will suffer. It happened to me -- I wasn't putting in 100% effort every day at my internship towards the end of it and therefore I got a borderline "negative" review when it finished, despite the fact that I had provided them with about 300 hours of free labor.

Hey, if anyone in this thread is a PHP developer and you want to work/live in South Florida (specifically, Deerfield Beach in Broward County), hit me up. The video game developer I work for (focusing on social/mobile games) is hiring a crapton of programmers.

EDIT: To entice you, perks incluce:

- Long hours!
- Super casual work environment
- Ping pong table (with very enthusiastic ping pong players)
- Kegerator, accepted drinking at work
- Long hours!

Finally, after years of being unemployed a ray of light. I have an interview with a staffing agency tomorrow. It's for warehouse work which I'm plenty experienced with. God, it's been too long for me without work. I need this...

I have an interview next week. Woohoo! The company found my resume online and contacted me. I should probably bring copies of my resume even though they've already seen it online, right.

3+ years and counting
I have stoped applying online (laptop is on it's last legs)
Well.. Haven't completely stop just doing it less often

Also only applying to places I know I can reach by walking or riding a bike

Same here. :( I didn't go out very often since whenever I have to gas up the car I have to use a credit card. Been mostly applying online but it's been terrible so far.

Just got on permanent at a dream company. FUCK YEAH.
Congratulations. :)

So I'm applying for a job with a nonprofit. On the job posting, they ask for a 3-5 page writing sample. Should I write something relevant to the company, education for underprivileged kids in this case, or should I just email the hiring manager and ask what she would like to read about.

Anyone here have any experience doing freelance programming work? How and where would I even start? Job searching isn't going all that well well and I need to do something :(

No wonder people sell drugs. being unemployed suck massive horse penis. I literally can't do shit except fill out applications.

Just call them and ask what exactly they want you to write regarding the company's activities, if you make it sound like you thought you were supposed to write about the company then it would at least show you gave the topic some thought before calling.

Just took a job that is totally out of my field but I figure I will give it a year and keep up freelance work while I earn a steady paycheck.

One bonus is I get to work with a very good friend so that should be nice.

Got accepted into Baington Business College on Monday, who offer accountancy and business apprenticeships (I applied for accountancy). Have over a 90% pass rate for accountancy. The interviewer told me the next batch of students start at the end of January, and they're now looking for employers for me.

While that's happening I should be doing some freelance work where I can have a steady income each week. In a weird situation at the moment where I can't really do a whole lot.

I've been unemployed since early December (company I was working at went under). I went on an interview to an advertising agency last week that went phenomenal. I've also sent them samples of my work and worked on a little project after my interview in their office. I really think I aced it.

Today I find out they're talking to my references (two senior members of my ex-company who gave me extremely high praise). I'm thinking I have the position on lock, the only thing I'm worried about is compensation. I have a number in mind but I've never counter-offered so I'm starting to strategize exactly what to do if they come back with something that's too low.

With me being unemployed I'm wondering what kind of leverage I have to negotiate.

Of course, I could be over thinking and they could come back with a spectacular offer. No problem with covering all my bases though, right?

Is this the closest we have to an official Unemployment-Age thread?

Right now I'm trying to figure out how the hell to use LinkedIn. So far all I've found it good for is indexing companies.

Unemployed was working as a temp at a marshalls in the womens shoe department but did not get to stay. Currently looking for a new job, most recently applied at subway.

Out of curiosity;

How many of you that are unemployed, also have a university/college degree?

My mom has PhD, has a lot of experience and has been unemployed for a minute.

She can do anything but has been getting more hits with research lately, so she's been targeting that.

She's been doing mostly PAID freelance market research projects since the beginning of her unemployment days.

I'm working on a History major with a Minor in Journalism. I plan to do an internship over the summer at George Washington in DC or a internship at a newspaper. I would like to do some sort of writing for a publication after I graduate.

The question is, how screwed am I in terms of getting a job in a year or two? Will it be that hard to get a job for what I'm looking for?

Well I've been "under employed" for a couple years, survived on my freelance consulting business which was enough to get by but did not provide enough mobility. I'm one of those no college guys who happens to be decently skilled and has tons of work experience in my field, so I was nervous throwing my hat back into the ring, but just accepted an offer, and looks like its going to be a relatively fun job with really awesome pay.

Oh man, getting a rejection email 10 seconds after submitting the online application is hilarious.

By hilarious, I mean bullshit.

graduated in civil engineering in December, a friend helped me get an interview and put in a good word for me at his job doing mechanical engineering. The interview went well and said they would call me back to take an aptitude test. Well it's been two weeks no call back, sent a thank you letter last week and just left a follow up message today. My friend said they are just really busy right now. I hope that is the case. it sucks getting your hopes up :(

After a year and a half of being unemployed, I 've finally got a decent gig in Downtown Seattle for the company that gave me my first job in my illustrative/art career. Feels good to be around, well, just around people. And getting paid well versus not knowing if someone will pay for freelance work.

I'll say this. I probably should have tried harder to find a part-time job during unemployment, but being stubborn about my career choice (being a freelance designer/animation/Illustration guy) is NOT something I regret. If any of you are having a hard time finding a job in the career you love, keep trying. Keep fighting, even if it means working part time to pay those bills (which I kind of did with freelance illustrating).

JUST DON'T GIVE UP. FIGHT TO SURVIVE!

Starting a small job in retail on monday, but I still haven't found any job related to my degree (mechanical engineering) :/

Same thing hapened to me a few months ago. To add insult to injury, they actually told me they had just hired a recent graduate from the same college I graduated from. Fuckers.
