anyone else unemployed?

Never ever include a photo.

  • It makes you look like an egotist.
  • Companies will discriminate against women.
  • It's just not necessary, and I'd be leery of anyone who demands one.

UK, forever jobless. Just going by advice and intuition.

In an age where companies will decide you'd be a liability and a threat to the chain of command just because you applied in person or asked when shortlisting will occur, no employer wants to see that unless you're a performer. "Here's my angles."

Are there any success stories of people who got work through an agency?

A cool job I applied for turns out was posted by an employment agency, so i'm gonna meet with somebody tomorrow. I was initially very excited, but friends and family are down on the idea. I'm still definitely going, just a little less excitement.

Well, after nearly three and a half years of no work I finally got called by Fed Ex Ground for a package handler position. Part time. I went earlier this morning to watch a training video on safety on the job: how to dress correctly, how to lift boxes the right way, etc.

I then hung out for about an hour to start with the regular shift of people at 4:30am (the appointment for the training video was at 1:30am).

Then it was time to work and they started me on unloading trucks. Holy shit, I worked like a fucking dog. The truck had already been started to unload by someone else but they pulled him off.

By the time I had finished I already felt pretty beat. But that was only the beginning. I then was put into another truck to help someone else unload but then they proceed to pull him off to do something else. So I'm in another damn truck and as I'm getting close to finishing, the dude who was scanning the packages/boxes that were coming off the truck must have seen me looking pretty tired cause he got someone else to come help me finish.

I told the guy who came into the truck "I'm sorry man". I felt like I was going to collapse. The kid helped me finish up the truck and was very cool about it.

But I didn't nearly have a chance to catch my breath till I was pulled to do something else. I then helped out with a third truck and by then dudes, I though I was finished. I was thisclose to walking off right there.

I really need the money guys, but I felt like the maybe three hours I worked were more like eight. I've worked in a warehouse environment before but I don't know if at 40 I can hang anymore. I really feel like quitting already and try something else.

I don't know what to do...

I temped for a while. The jobs and environments and people are varied so it's hard to have any idea what you're going into, but it can be an educational and broadening experience. It's kind of interesting and fun to go to a new workplace, meet new people, and learn a new job every 6 months or so. The downside of course is you don't really have any control over when you'll get work and how long it'll last or your pay. But if you do really well and get lucky they might want to bring you on full-time; one of the companies I temped for did that (only to lay off the whole project a month later...).

I'd say take the meeting with the agency; you have nothing to lose, and even if you don't get the immediate job, building a relationship with a recruiter can be helpful long term.

the best thing to do is just walk into their closest branch they got and chat it up with the representatives in there, alot of jobs they don't even post on their little search thingies yet.

Been collecting unemployment since last June and now when I tried to file a continue claim online, I was told my benefits expired. Never knew this was gonna happen and immediately went to my unemployment office to see if I qualify for extended benefits. I should be getting a letter about it if I qualify or not but since I'm living in New Jersey. Just read that the State Extended Benefits ended last week so this is not news I want to hear at all. So as of right now, I'm in a panic. I thought my benefits will last til the end of the year and will be able to pick up some part time work since I was going to start school this coming September. I live with my mother and she is not taking the news well at all either. I know a friend of mine that told me a about a job opening in the hotel he works at but its shit pay but I guess I don't have a choice. Hoping they hire me which that hasn't been happening ever since I started collecting.

Language requirements should be the first sentence of a job posting. Waste of time and major trolling to read paragraphs you qualify for, only to see a "Bilingual Mandarin/English only!" at the end of the listing. Trolls!

I asked this two weeks ago, but thought I'd ask it one more time:

Anyone here ever use a "job listing agency" doing business under the names Pro Resources, Professional Employment Resource Management, Northwest Employment, Employment Resource Group, or Employment 1?

Has anyone here ever paid money to join a job listing agency under any name?

Will be joining you guys in a few days! We had two facilities we were trying to get going, one is just barely starting up after a 2yr delay and the other (whose success decides whether the company can continue or not) has been a constant mess. Couple funding cuts later and I'm no longer w/ the company. This is the second time I've been laid off so it wasn't a huge shock that the first time was, but I'm a bit bummed that I may've caught a nasty bug while out on the job site last week. Weather's great and I could use the time for some nice cycle touring to get my mind off the immediate problem for a bit, but I'm down with a fever.

Couldn't find a summer job.

I have an internship lined up for next school year, but it only pays for my tuition. I could have used some cash over the summer. Oh well, I'll rest and get ready for my super busy year of teacher training.

Soon to be unemployed. My job goes away next week, and i just found out the interview i had tuesday didn't go as well as I'd hoped. Man I am so sick of having no money.

Could be worse though i guess. At least now i'm getting call backs. it used to be like sending my resume into a black hole.

Did another interview today for a newswriter/business writer position. First time I got interviewed by foreigner (interviewer was an American) but I think I managed to do well. One final interview left on Monday. Wish me luck GAF!

Last day on the job tomorrow, will be heading to the job centre on Monday to sign-on for ma' free money!

I've known for a few months that my contract might not be renewed, so I've been putting aside a bit of extra cash so I'll be ok financially for a few months. Been applying for jobs over the past few weeks, haven't heard anything yet but I'm quietly confident that I'll get an interview for at least one of them.

I'm not too bummed out over losing my job, I haven't greatly enjoyed my time working in HR, far too much talking and meetings, not enough things to do. Still, I will miss that monthly paycheque!

Graduated six months ago, have yet to find a job. During the interim, only two opportunities have presented themselves. I never made it past the phone screening for the first, and I just learned that I was not chosen for an interview for the second. I am fucking pissed off. Ugh, so much grief and anger over the chance to earn 1981 fucking wages. Fuck this stupid state and fucking hicks that live here.

FML, I'm back to being unemployed. I decided not to go back to Fed Ex as a package handler. I had a feeling the volume of packages I had to unload that day was a normal thing and I just couldn't handle that volume.

It was an extreme pace for the little time I was there (about three hours). I honestly didn't feel I could work at that pace everyday. Back to sending out resumes...

Why is everyone so against this? I don't see what harm it could do.

Because, apart from performance/acting, it has nothing to do with your qualifications.

Either they don't like your face and it works against you, or they think your attractive and you're coasting on looks to get hired, and it works against you. Bad idea all around.

Applied to a few places and it has been weeks already and never heard from any of them except Target, which I was rejected.

No problem though, because I'm working for my dad. The pay is better here than the places I applied to anyway.

Caught a lucky break, sort of. My boss's boss put a good word out for me to the engineering firm pretty much next door to us, and they're going to take me starting from next week with whatever projects they can put me on. May end up a temporary gig but definitely works for the time being. Only bad thing is that I lost the 3+ weeks vacation I've been accruing over the course of working at my current job. Guess I'll have to set aside long vacation trips for another time...

Depends on the job you're applying for. Retail, restaurants etc it's usually a positive to include a photo unless you're hideous. They're not looking for models, but they're looking for neat, clean shaven people, not slobs. That's why they often even ask for photos.

wait, you have 3+ weeks at a place you just left? they're supposed to cash that out and give it to you.

ahh, didn't know that. I've always had mine given to me when leaving a company.

Didn't know that either, but I am getting it cashed out. Just had some loose plans to blow a week and comp time on a summer trip and something longer to see a bunch of relatives that's out of the country, which just went out the window.

Boss called me tonight; layoffs at my office & many jobs sent offshore. Offered me another position but I declined.
$30K payout *.*

Studying full time so I don't mind, only thing is that I probably can't find another job like that in a while. Will probably have to move apartments as I won't be able to afford the $400 p/w rent.

Embrace me, unemployedGAF.

So besides Engineering, what seems to be the field to go into? After 20 years of military service with 1992 being my last year of formal schooling, my math skills aren't even good enough for college algebra, so I don't see Engineering in my future. I'll be jobless in about 5 months from now, I've been serving in middle management for the past 10 years, so my technical skills in IT have diminished, and with cloud computing and outsourcing, low level IT is starting be more difficult to get into. I have 7 years of teaching experience and a Navy Master Training Specialist designation. I'm leaning towards education. But I'm not set in stone on it. Any suggestions?

Education has always interested me. I thought about doing Troops To Teachers for a while.
It seems like you have quite a bit of experience with teaching already.

Given any thought to what or who you would want to teach? You could surely get a civilian teaching job at whatever the Navy equivalent of a Tech School is right? I know at Keesler, we had more civilians teaching there than military.

Unemployed for 3 weeks now, in a new country since last week, already depressed. I hate sitting at home and being dependent on the charity of others. I'm living at my aunties house, she's paying for my food etc. Feels shit.

wait, why did you decline the job offer?

(what is the regular / average salary in the US?)

I've been unemployed for so long. Today I got email from a recruiter about entry level position requiring 20 years of experience with bachelor's degree or 14 years with master's. I think it's time to give up on life and go build myself a hut in woods

Are you atleast helping out? Dishes, cleaning, yard work etc

Ive been going on overdrive mode sending out resumes/applications and no calls much less interviews. Ive been unemployed/underemployed for a year and change. I dont feel im any closer to a job than I was when I just graduated from uni.

This thread is depressing. Here I am considering quitting my job which is relatively nice. And then I see people in here struggling and taking jobs lifting packages etc. I'm sorry. Now I feel like an entitled dick.

Started kicking my job search up a notch this summer. Hasn't worked. Aside from seasonal part-time position, this summer begins my fifth year of unemployment. Almost fell into a couple of scams too.
