Is a cover letter even needed when applying online for part-time hourly jobs at supermarkets and coffee shops?

Nope. I've found that most of them only use the uploaded resume to cull some info from so you may not need to manually fill out your job and education history. Bring a physical copy of your resume with you if they want to have an in-person interview, though.

As of Friday the 13th, yes I am. Heh, Friday the 13th, coincidence?

Twas my choice. I quit.

Edit - Now I need to find another job.
I applaud you. I wish I had the strength to quit right now. First I am going to see a career counselor about what I should do.

I feel to quit my job, today more than ever... But I don't want to go through unemployment. I get depressed really quick when unemployed. :(

Not sure how many times it has been mentioned so far in this thread, but job hunting sucks utter balls.

Worst offender being when recently an agency brought up that they were looking for a person with experience for a junior role.
It's not even really isolated to any industry. Previous experience of washing dishes needed for a kitchen cleaning job? Crazy stuff.

Job hunting DOES suck major balls. Until last week, I'd been unemployed for over a year after being fired from my (first) job. Spent the first half of the year lazing around, unmotivated to do anything, and the second half searching for jobs that I didn't get anyway. Bleh.

Finally managed to nab a really great one last week, though. Part-time, $11.90 an hour, and with full-time benefits (tuition reimbursement, paid vacations, full heathcare benefits), and I get paid every week. Seriously, how the fuck did I even manage to get this job? ._.

I guess luck plays a factor, too.

Over two years back I was unemployed for far longer than I would've preferred. Things do get better, but I'll say the shock to my system of returning to the 8-5 (well, 6-3 in my case) routine was pretty hellish for awhile after getting too accustomed to waking up at noon to play 360 games until 2AM. You kinda feel like you're imprisoned/enslaved for awhile, but you eventually beat that free spirit part of your soul down again for the sake of paying bills and such. :)

I like this job quite abit now - keeps me busy, the days go by quick, there's been some nice advancement opportunities. Not really sure what I'd do without it now.

I got a Reckless Driving misdemeanor (Its a fucking MISDEMEANOR in Virginia, and is automatic when going over 80MPh, although there are zones where the speed limit is freaking 70MPH. .... FUCK VIRGINIA) and jobs have turned me down just for that... I feel extremely hopeless and I just graduated from college with a degree in freaking computer engineering... FML

I was even turned down from a freaking phone tech support position because of it...

My current bedroom is a spare room with no bed at my mothers house. That's right... im sleeping on an old sofa that's older than I am. I don't want to even imagine the number of asses thats been up here -_-

Anyone used temp agencies before? I got a call from one for a job at for BMW Financial Services. Seems to be a call center paying $12.50 - $14.50/hr.

What do you do when an interview question has you COMPLETELY stumped? That's happened to me in almost every interview I've had in the last three years.

I have never heard anything good about them. Of course, I have only used one before and it turned into nothing or replies from my calls and emails. Guess they just leave a bad taste in my mouth.

It depends what type of question it was. Do you have some examples? I think, for example, if its a behavioral question and you can't think of a time you dealt with a situation they are describing then sometimes it might be better to say that you haven't run into that type of situation instead of trying to BS or lie your way through it.

For the job that I just got an offer for I made sure to to some research on different types of interview questions (http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/). Before going in I had a general idea of what I would say if I got something like the 5 year plan question and other common questions. I also kept in mind a few different experiences I can talk about for behavioral questions. Its also easy to get tripped up if they ask you what you know about the company, but most people should know to do what research they can on a company before they go and interview with them.

Today was my first day of being layed off...

I filed for unemployment online today and if the "possible" amount is right Im only losing like 70 bucks then what I made working, not to shabby.
Got a thing I have to attend in late June, a class or seminar they said I have to attend.

I'm not gonna think about doing shit till Sept. or Oct., once my sons school year starts back up.

i tried using one and they were basically like "we have nothing for you" and it didnt seem like they wanted to help me that much. i guess it was the wrong one for me, but its not like they said anything about what they focused on on their site...

Job hunting sucks balls. After graduating it took three months to find a job even though I had been applying my whole senior year to places. The job ended up being two states away from all of my family, and the only reason I got that one is because I have something special.

that was like a 3 hour interview, thank fuck i got it otherwise i would of been livid about being grilled for 3 hours and getting nothing.

i'm taking a nap

(job was in retail supervision)

Today I'm waiting for another phone call...that I won't get. I hate it when people give the impression they are enthusiastic about you, then won't even call back.

And as someone in a technical field (that finally got an offer yesterday, phew), they really want to know how you think there. So if it's a question you can think through to the answer, even if you can't get there, that's still good. Partial credit. Not the case for every industry of course, but still could be helpful.

I graduated with my bachelor's degree two years ago in IT. Went for my Master's for another year. It just wasn't for me. I have 2 more classes to complete the degree though. I've been out of work and school for a year now. I've had interviews but haven't been able to land a job. The problem is that I don't have any work experience in IT. It's hard to even get intern work since I'm no longer in school anymore and almost every job you have to have 1-2 year experience.

So I'm in a cross roads on what to do. I'm getting depressed not doing much and still living with my parents. I've looked at going into a medical field but almost all you have to get into a program and I don't think I can go to school for another 2 years because of lack of money and I still have $30 grand in student loans.

Well, I was told yesterday by my boss "if this deal doesn't go through we won't be able to afford you anymore. You're a smart young man, you knew this was coming. I can make a few calls, our competitors are always hiring. Polish up your resume".

So, I'm going to get laid off again. Second time in two years. I'm already depressed. My identity is tied to my job. I can't face my g/f. I can't bare to look at my resume.

I don't know what I'm going to do. Last time I got laid off it took 6 months to find another job.

I had a (great!) second interview last week....and then I got word 2 days ago I didn't get the job. 2 great phone interviews, and no shot at the third/in-person/final interview =/ I felt good about this job too. At least they let me know.

There is this other company I had a good phone interview with and the COO emailed me a couple days later to come in for an in-person interview. But at the last minute he cancelled the interview because he had to go on a last minute trip to Dubai. =/ He said he would get back with me when he got back in the States. That was 3wks ago =/ Fuck, I don't know what to do.

at least i'm still employed though

UK here, Unemployment has been nipping at my heels for far too long now.
I finished my education around June 2008, remained unemployed until May 2009 where I had a temp job for 3 months. Back to unemployment after that and bar a brief month long stint in a charity shop earlier this year (which was part of a mandatory work program set up by job centre staff) I've done nothing at all. This leaves me with a poor set of previous experience.

I feel especially bad considering how many in this topic have clearly been trying so much harder than me to get a job and still being shunned due to the ridiculous criteria necessary for most jobs now.

The worst thing of all is that I genuinely have no damn clue what I want to do in life. I'm left firing applications at low level retail jobs and even that leads nowhere. They could at least send a letter saying something in the vicinity of "bugger off we found someone above your meager talents" and it would be an improvement. I've had to rewrite my CV so many times now due to so many conflicting opinions about "how it should be done" from various people who are supposed to have some kind of authority on CV creation.

At the end of the day my motivation is running low on fuel.

My dad was the same way. It ate him alive when he would loose a job. It's hard to accept, but you have to find other ways to define yourself. Be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished, because jobs won't hire someone who isn't confident in themselves.

The last three jobs I have had I got from temp agencies. I worked at those places 8 years, 5 years, and currently in my first year. It is a way to have others looking for a job for you. That job may turn into something permanent.

Ive used one, they got me one 2-month stint....and then nothing. Even though the people I worked with loved me.

So on one side, dont keep your hopes up, but on the other, fill out the paperwork, talk to them, and they might send something your way. Cant hurt right?

Can't imagine how it feels for you guys...I'm just looking for a gig to help me support myself through school, and I'm antsy as hell. Must suck when this is your career path you're talking about.

But my silver lining is that I have two job interviews lined up within the next week, with hopefully more to come! I'm wanting two or three PT gigs over this summer to build up money...will probably keep only one or (if I'm feeling crazy) two for fall once the semester starts back up.

Good luck, GAF.

I've probably posted in this thread before. I'm still not having any luck finding work. No call backs from anyone. I've registered with 3 staffing firms since 2010 and not one has contacted me for any positions.
I'm clean cut, smart, have a college degree and still no luck.

I recently saw on my local news here in NY a segment about "Jobless Discrimination" where some jobseekers feel that they are not given a fair chance for a position they have applied to, because they are not currently employed. Specifically, when an interviewer or other contact person asks you "are you currently employed?" they might be screening you and using this against you. How fucked up is that? Can't find a new job without already having a job...what? It's not my fault I am not given a chance by anyone for so long.

January 1, 2010 will always be remembered by me as the day my life went to complete fucking shit.

Again, good luck to everyone.

Out of work since Jan 7. 2011. Got bamboozled by my lovely wife though. She starts looking for a job lands a great position as a legal secretary at a big law firm in around three days of looking. All of a sudden could I please stay home for a few months so she could concentrate on this position and could I get the kids to school pick them up and get them to practices and feed them dinner.

Mr Mom'd, I'm bored as fuck and a little depressed. I watched TV, lost some weight and played video games with my six months off. I will start to look over the summer. Any suggestions on how to update my resume to explain family issues being the cause of six months without employment?

Couple tips:

Hit up the agencies again. When I signed up, I heard nothing for 2 weeks. I emailed asking "whats up?" and the very next day they had something for me. I guess they only give positions to those that pressure?

As for the second part......lie? If you can get a friend or family member as a reference, so you can say youre working at least part time, that might be a leg up? Obviously, dont say "I am a financial manager at BoA" but maybe saying "I do part time work gopher work at a medical office" might be better than "nobody wants me". I guarantee you wouldnt be the first to fib.

went to job centre meeting today. They're sending me on a 13 week "community task force" course, which is some kind of work placement. Which sounds good to me. Hopefully i'll get a job out of it at the end.

Only thing is they're working me 25 hours a week for just over £65. But i guess it's worth it.

Start with a crappy call center IT job and tough it out for a year or so. Then try to find a desktop support job while you work on your certifications. After that you should be able to find a better paying network job and begin your real career.

Interview went well this morning, the guy said he was gonna review the rest of my file (only had my resume for the interview) and check my references before getting back to me. Got a really good feeling about this. :D

Simple as that - "There were some family reasons and we decided for the short term it was best for one of us to be at home." No HR person is going to pry more than that for fear of getting into a discrimination suit.

Heading to my new job in a few. I'll be doing warehouse work. Coming from an IT background its gonna be weird. I've been doing IT for the last 5 years. A change of pace is definitly welcome though.

Im not unemployed, but I just started the search for a second job. Hopefully I land one quick and I can spend my whole summer before freshman year at college making bank

I've been unemployed for, shit, a month now. Before I worked a crappy retail job I got a couple years ago after graduating from high school. I ended up finally leaving last month because I couldn't take it anymore.

I'm a wannabe artist, and my resume is bare bones at best, so that and my ongoing depression have been making job hunting a pain. I've been looking in to getting some simple art-related work though, like graphic design or something.

HR people are assholes.

Out of work for a year? MUST'VE BEEN IN JAIL LULZ
I hate how recession isn't accepted...and how HR twats viewed people let go due to the recession was culling of terrible employees.

Honestly?

I was contacted about a new job today but I have to take an assessment test before I even get an interview. Anyone have luck with any of these? I have been taking a few sample tests already but not feeling very confident.

That sucks, but maybe you could so some volunteer work somewhere? It's much easier to find volunteer work, for obvious reasons, and that will negate any judgement an employer might cast on you for not being employed. If anything, I'd think it would actually look even better, as it shows you like to keep yourself busy, even though you aren't being paid.

As an added bonus, you can be a bit picky when it comes to what volunteer work you want to do, and it can help you get a job in that field later on.

Oh, and a tip for everybody; one thing I've learned is that you shouldn't be afraid to apply for jobs you think are beyond you. Most of the time, they aren't. A friend of mine who got a placement year at a videogame developer for his student placement year suggested I try and apply, and he'd put in a good word. I got the job, and in the end, I don't think his word was the deciding factor, as despite me going into it thinking that I was out of my league, I handled the interview and assessment day quite well.

Unless a job description specifically states that a degree/prior experience are required (not "preferred"), then just go for it. Worst case scenario, you don't get it, which is no different from not applyinmg. Best case scenario, you end up being pleasantly surprised and getting a great job.

Just back from the Job seakers

Sigh they never helped me one bit... i guess its 2 weeks of lord of the rings online till i'm back in

Sigh
