Had a job interview on Wednesday that was short but went pretty well. Although I'm worried that since my sister works at the organization (and has for ~5 years) that'll somehow hurt my chances. Is there any validity to that? She hasn't really said anything to the HR department since there's an obvious conflict of interest, but I'm wondering if her simply working there is going to hurt my chances.
This has happened with me and my brother. He could have got me into where he worked at but they have that rule in effect of not hiring family. Conflict of interest was brought up. Hopefully this place isn't like that and they'll hire you. I know my old job wasn't like that at all. Two brothers worked there as well as me and my brother. Just see how it goes. Good luck though. :)

*edit* I know the feeling SHAZOOM. :(

Have an interview for an Account Manager position next week. Didn't think I was even qualified for the job but I put in a resume and got a call back to set up the interview the next day. Job pays ~30k a year which might not sound like a lot but is still a game changing amount of money for me. Seriously, I'd dagger a person to be able to afford a 1 bedroom and get the hell out of my parents house.

Need some job advise.

I'm currently employed, not my dream job by any stretch and pay is only ok. Problem is due to some layoffs, quitting, etc shit is rolling downhill. I'm taking on too many responsibilities and being overworked, but no promotion. Boss says he's getting something sorted going on now for two months, so I'm looking to get out. (I know i fucked up)

Now on my resume should I explain this or just list my responsibilities/title and explain this during the interview process...if it gets there.

Also, any recommendations on switching career paths. I majored in linguistics and comp sci, but I want to do something different. Have some experience in accounts, hr, warehouse.

I hope it's okay to ask in here even though I'm employed...

Have any of you had success in applying for something for which you were under qualified? Just applied for a development position (career change) looking for experience in stuff I've never used (VB and Dreamweaver), so I'm pretty nervous...

Sweet, I followed up to the reference request to see where I stood, and the manager said I'm going to get the job offer as soon as they get the paperwork from corporate. Meaning I've basically got the job. yay me

Getting down to London for this recruitment day will be tougher and more expensive than I thought. Hostels are fully booked and hotels are going for £120+ a night, so it's an overnight train for me with five hours sitting around in a station. Job is very exciting, so I hope it's worth it.

There are cheap hostels in Queensway, Camden and kings cross. Try ringing them up. Travelodges aren't too bad either.

I got offered a job today as a graphic designer! I'm so happy because the place I will be working at is less than 5 minutes drive from my home =)

Yeah. You may be fine. What I would do is get together some small sample projects if you can to show that you can pick it up. Also, if you do get to the phase where you are interviewed just stress that you can learn new languages and programs easily. Tell them you are willing to spend your own time to ramp up. I did this going from c++ to c#.

Does it mean I didn't get the job if I haven't heard back? I didn't get a no though. I had an interview that went well and they said about 2 weeks they would know. I followed up at exactly 2 weeks and they responded to my email saying they would let me know. They didn't say if I got it they would let me know, just in general they would let me know. If it was a no I think they wouldn't have responded to the email. Should I take it as a maybe still that I haven't heard back? Thanks.

There is no such thing as too much follow up. Might it annoy some people? Sure, but it means you really want the job. I had to follow up with a Temp agency for 2 years before they employed me. It was for season work, so I didn't call every week for 2 years, but each time I saw the posting online, I would follow up. Eventually they gave me a job for something different, but I'm really happy with it.

You are probably on a short list and they are waiting to hear back from their #1 offer.

Good luck!

They usually will send out a typed letter notifying you. It usually goes like this: "Although your credentials are most impressive, we have decided to go in another direction with filling this position. Blah blah blah."

Forgot to add, that was on behalf of my gf. She says thanks.

Anyways I have a interview on Tuesday, hope I can get this.

I graduated 2 weeks ago and have no idea what I want to do with my life. I wish there was like some 15 hour a week option since that's the fraction of the average starting salary I'd need to afford my hobbies.

Uh, it's called working part time?

Anybody have a good guide or youtube video for helping with job interviews, there seems to be a lot of different kinds.

I'm applying for customer service for a local business, would help with their advertising and graphic design also.

I don't think there are part time engineers. I could be wrong though since I'm not really sure of much job-related these days.

Nobody's going to want to hire an engineer who doesn't have a good work ethic.

Got called and was told I wasn't chosen for a position I interviewed for, even though they said I scored high. I asked if there was anything else and he told me he would call me back.

A week later i had another interview. I start the job June 27th. So yes, you still have a decent shot.

That's the thing, Travelodge was going for that much money which is a real pain. My plan is to hibernate for the day before the train journey. I'm looking forward to the day, even though I have to do team exercises in front of a panel before I know if I'll be interviewed.

Four hour stay at Manchester from 1-5am. :| I'll bring a netbook.

I booked short notice at a Travelodge near Old street for £72 or some shit.

I'm working on a cover letter for a job and they said I'll either have 1 of 2 people for the interview. Do I put both of their names on the cover letter or do I make 2 separate ones with their names of each of them?

That's not too bad, if i remember the 76 can take you from Old Street to South Bank within half an hour.
I honestly think the hardest part will be finding a place to live on at least £7 per hour.

I'm not sure I understand, you already have an interview, but you are writing a cover letter for it?

Ha, sweet!

Hey, how common are 10am-6pm work days these days?
Working in the gaming industry ? Good luck getting off at 6pm...

I work in the film vfx industry and I have heard many crazy things about the gaming side :O

I've been out in and out of school and work for the past 6 years....

been out of both since late 2009 with no end in sight...

the hardest part is not having no work... it's having to go back to work after a long stretch of doing nothing and sleeping in.

Peter Gibbons: It's not just about me and my dream of doing nothing. It's about all of us. I don't know what happened to me at that hypnotherapist and, I don't know, maybe it was just shock and it's wearing off now, but when I saw that fat man keel over and die - Michael, we don't have a lot of time on this earth! We weren't meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.

Had a job interview at Starbucks a couple of days ago, the interview went fine, not perfect but fine, she then told me she was looking for someone who was looking to stay there for around 2 years, which was perfect for me, and I had the perfect school schedule for the job, but no. She hired someone who just got their teaching degree and couldn't find a real teaching job, so she is just substituting now. Best part is the lady said she would most likely miss days and need shifts covered in-case she gets called in and when she finds a real job she will quit this one.

I hate when employers say something but do something completely different.

Had a good interview today, 3 little ones with 2 people. I think I was the first person for the interview that day, they said they would call me tonight to say if I got it or not. I have a good feeling.
