One of my friends was complaining to me the other day that a guy we knew in HS is on unemployment and is making more per week then my friend is who's working at a convenience store. Kind of sad, when you think about it.

Yep. The incentive isn't there for people on unemployment to take jobs because of this.

When I lost my job I was still working part time, so my unemployment benefits were going to be around $100 a week. I didn't even bother taking it and put my energy towards getting a job instead. I worked out a resume with someone I knew who worked in HR and spammed it to every listing I could on Craigslist, Dice, whatever. If they responded too quickly, I knew it was a scam. On weekends I would take paper copies and just walk down the strip malls looking for signs. And I called the temp agencies every day. It took me less than two months to get multiple offers to work.

Awwww fuck.

I just noticed a small typo in my resume after I turned it in today. I must have accidentally made it when I went over to my mom's place to print it out. I hope my application doesn't go straight to the trash bin for misspelling.

I'll open up a bit about this concerning my own unemployment. When I was laid off from my last job I was making around $1300-1350 a month, $14.50 on hourly wages. When unemployment determined the amount I would make, they took the highest earning quarter of 2008 for me and I for whatever reason, did great in that quarter. Because of that, I have been making $1216 a month on unemployment. Lets just round that to $1200 and say I was making a solid $1350 a month at my last job.

When you take out my lunches and gas expense, I pretty much make the same amount I do, as when I was working. This is a major reason why I haven't looked as hard for work, as I should be. It is just too easy to check that box on the form and get that check, for 99 weeks. Now my 99 weeks will be up in September and I am currently collecting FED-ED benefits. This requires me to show my job search results week by week and there is a bit more scrutiny involved, compared to the previous extensions I qualified for.

That said, I got my EDD check today and got this little notice. I thought it was kinda funny.

So instead of checks we will be getting state issued debit cards. Maybe the State wants to start tracking purchases and the use of money? Just more convenient for them to issue instead of paper checks?

OH MY GOD this hiring process is taking forever! I know I should be thankful that I have found a job and all, but damn, I need money man! Hahaha

I know how you feel. My boss told me over a month ago that I was being promoted to a management position, but I'm still waiting for the spot to free up so I can take over. They don't want to have two management type guys on the same shift doing the same thing, so I have to wait until they get ready to start shifting bodies around (one guy is going to a new position and the guy that's working the shift I'm going to be running is going to be taking over the other guys shift).

*taps foot impatiently*

I want my raise and my official job title.

Good news GAF they already hired another Unloader which means I'm getting that overnight dairy position sooner than I thought. Hello $10.90/hr 40hr weeks.

I've been unemployed for a little over a year now.. Got the boot from Nokia and now I'm going back to school..

I could have gone to school last year but looks like they had somehow lost my application so I got in for next semester..

got a job interview tomorrow~
At an ALDI that takes three buses to get to -_- I'm happy I got a job interview but geez, if it takes 3 hours there and back commuting I'm not sure if its worth it... I don't know how to tell the interviewer that though...

Gave up trying to find work, Just submitted a college appliction for a Pc technician course.

All the printing and mailing costs probably add up. Plus Visa gets a kickback every time someone uses it at an ATM.

It says you can set up direct deposit, so I don't think they really expect to track expenses (though they still might).

I just filled out a FAFSA application for graduate school. The government is willing to give me $20,500 a year. The program costs $990 per unit and total is 48 units.

All jobs here have been taken it seems, i guess i'm gonna have to take place that basically automatically hire if you've basically been with 1 food job.

sigh.

Most of us are good people, but I still wouldn't go around posting your Debit card number on the internet.

Edit: I get it now, it says "Coming soon". I am stupid.

I just wonder if there will be pc technician jobs in the near future. My brother is one, and he anticipates not much longer for this type of work. Most of his work is antivirus/spam/spyware cleanup, with less and less hardware work. Many people have moved to laptops, and recently to ipads and other tablets.
He just doesn't rip apart towers like he used to, maybe for servers for his business clients, but that's about it.

Interesting. I heard on talk radio the other day that authorities (banks? govt?) are now pushing really hard to phase out cheques, as they cost around five times more to process than other payment methods. (This is in Aus, but probably a universal fact).

I'd be feeling a bit iffy about the spend tracking ability they have with these cards. But I guess there's nothing stopping you withdrawing one lot of cash each month if it concerns you.

I think you mean "loan me". Big difference there.

Applied for an apprentice HR position and will be going for a place at Vodafone during the weekend.

The Job Centre also said I have six weeks to find a job otherwise they're looking for full-time college courses. Sod that. I'm still recovering from two operations last year and struggled to paint a bench at home last week for ten minutes. If they think they can force me into some course I have no desire to do then it ain't happening.

I now have about 900 bucks in my bank account,so I have to find some way to save that for my classes in august. I can not find a job here. I'm so fucking depressed right now.

I'm not truly unemployed. I work a part time job but it's really as needed. I hate it though so I am trying to finish CNA class to do that while waiting to get into nursing school. fun fun!

So I graduated from uni last year (uk) and as expected the job market was not that great so I managed to find a place after months of job searching which would be part time designing websites, however this was part time pay and not the best place to work, I've now spent 5 months here and just feel the work is just over piling, spent my first week doing overtime at home , which I can only get paid up to a certain point. I feel like quitting but have no idea on what to do, I've realized my time at my job that I hate programming in general and want to something different, then again part of me wants to stay, all of my other class mates are still doing there part time jobs down the cafe or super markets, I feel kinda trapped in options to go from here. I've also been just thinking about copying what my mates do in terms of career path but I feel this is not going to lead me anywhere.

tl:dr : graduated, got part time job, do not like (crap pay)- not going to progress, want to leave, have no idea what to do/ fear of not finding another job.

Does it really? I actually been looking to move to Columbus. I am getting tired of living in New York plus I have some family located in Columbus.

Sorry just saw this post, yeah for some fields it is booming, others its kind of shitty. But tons of technical jobs, and insurance agency type jobs. I've lived in Columbus my whole life and really enjoy it, it is much different than the rest of the state. Although with you coming out of NY it is way diff, our downtown is mostly dead, theyre trying to fix it though. So if you're into the bar/club scene have to head up by the arena or campus. Another plus is cost of living is super cheap, and especially compared to where you are now.

Out of curiosity, what resources are you guys using when it comes to job searches and resumes/cover letters?

I'm not unemployed but I'm definitely looking for something better so having more resources would be helpful.

Where do you live the unemployment benefit is that much?

The maximum in the UK is £50 / week.

Working national min wage for about 20 hours gets you at least £110 / week.

I just want to give some courage to all you guys here. I was going through the same thing last year being unemployed for 3 months. The best advice I can give is to ask around instead of applying to places. At the moment my observation is it's all who you know so sitting there checking CareerBuilder etc. won't help too much.

Ask your parents if they know people in higher positions, ask your friends, call up old co-workers. Also I told my buddy to print out a few resumes and just jump into the car and start driving, stop by attorney offices, smaller businesses, you never know. He got a decent job doing some work for a local Lawyer.

If i ever get laid off Im in Florida so it basically means you are fucked and might as well go homeless. They pay shit and the government down here makes it a pro-active practice to fuck over every citizen possible.

I live in NY. The guy on unemployment is making over $300 USD a week sitting at home smoking weed and drinking beer. My friend working at the convenience store makes maybe half that, or less, depending on his hours each week.

Just remind him that when the economy gets back into prosperity mode, retailers are going to start hiring full speed for the Holidays.

They sure as hell aren't going to pick someone who's had a huge gap in his resume, compared to someone who's been working as a cashier meanwhile.

Experience counts. Even something as hopeless as cashiering at a convenience store can get you in if hedged properly when large corporations open their doors.

If this guy is your friend, I assume he's a nerdy type guy too? Into games/technology? If so, he would be a fool not to apply for Best Buy or whatever your biggest electronics retailer is for the seasonal hires. The most hardworking ones who follow protocol to the T will be retained for full-time.

From there, you can move up slowly but surely to management.

Been unemployed for about six months now. It's been awful. I at least have family to fall back on, but it doesn't help that the little family I have is basically crazy. I'm thankful I'm not starving on the street, of course, but I've really come to resent my general situation in life. I've filled the time with volunteering, but I've almost become stuck in the routine of not getting paid for doing legitimate work. It's very depressing to think of all the time I've lost. My "boss" did tell me I could eventually get some light contract work, but that won't be until September. Not sure I can wait it out that long, living with family and generally feeling worthless. Not to mention having no money saved up to eventually move out. It doesn't help that I live really far away from the main hub of the city, so I think anyone who would employ me takes one look at my address and determines that I live too far away to take that risk. But I can't move out until I get a job... it's a frustrating Catch-22.

He just recently gave up on a job and is going back to college for his masters, so he'll be living on student loans again until that's over. I think he's been generally depressed by his situation and the fact that he has a bachelor's and hasn't been able to get a job anywhere, so he wants to retreat back to college and stay there as long as possible. I really don't think that's the best course of action for him in the long run, though.

Spend a couple bucks and invest in a P.O. Box that is closer to where you want to work. Then you can list that as your address and seem much closer.

Just got called in for my second in person interview over at Best Buy. Feels good to get called back after so many declined applications from numerous retail stores. I just need a job to pay rent, should come out to about 400 a month, until I graduate with an Accounting degree.

Quick question fiance GAF, should I expect difficulties finding an accounting job when I graduate in a few years?

Been out of work since last October. I had a handful of interviews around Dec-Jan, but haven't interviewed once since then. Part time retail work is out of the question since I would make close to the same amount, or in some situations, less than unemployment is giving me.

In retrospect I had a pretty good thing going. From 18 to 21 years old I had work making 13$ an hour while going to school. Trying to find something that can compensate somewhere in that range is hard enough, but I also have to factor in my school schedule.

Good thing is, I finally decided to go into accounting once I transfer.

My friend has been canvassing for about a week, and he actually kind of likes it I guess. I started working at Walmart as a cashier for the summer a few weeks ago and am not really a fan. He said I could easily canvass if I wanted to for the Fund For Public Interest. I dunno what to do :/

Can we start specifying what state or area we are in if complaining about how long we have been without work?

I have been without work as a PC tech for about 9 months now, in california... I am wondering if its the area, too many people to compete with..

Yeah, a lot of people have already mentioned the area they're in. New York is pretty much as crappy as anywhere else. I'd probably recommend looking at getting some education if you don't already have it and trying for a job in a datacenter building servers or something. In that regard, there's a good number of jobs in NY. I'm friends with the owner of a datacenter in New Jersey and he's paying his system admins 40 - 60 grand a year. I think the hardware guys make about the same.

CPA (when NYS processes my application) here, where do you live? To get your CPA license (are you think of this) do you need a Master's degree / MBA? Most states require this, have you put that into your few years of graduating?

Jobs really determine where you are and what you're willing to do. If you're willing to go into public accounting for a few years you'll be able to find a job, you might just have to move. If you have questions you can PM me.

I always say I'd rather be overworked than out off work. Hate people that bitch and moan when collecting a paycheck. My job aloes me to pay my bills and put food on my table. Also alows me to afford my bad azz flat screen with 360, ps3, wii and custom pc. Now having the free time to enjoy them and going out is a different story. But I'd rather have them and not have the time to enjoy them than knowing rent is due, I'm 800 dollars short and I have no job or prospects in the near future. Add wife and kids and your really screwed.

Just got called for my third interview over at Best Buy on Friday, hopefully all goes well and I can bow out of this thread.

One thing that frustrates me is 99% of advertised vacancies need some sort of experience, obviously to indicate that you actually know what you're doing, but some of these positions advertised I am more than capable of doing so, but I can't apply because I haven't been given the chance to fill any of these roles in the first place and so have no experience.

Even positions for Cleaners state "experience is essential". Wtf? I clean my home, I clean my dishes. What experience do you need to clean rooms and offices ffs.

Wheres conventionally people would lie on their CV about qualifications, they are now having to lie about working elsewhere to meet this 'experience' criteria.
