anyone else unemployed?

Well, I've been unemployed since June 20, 2011. I was laid off from from previous company due to cut backs. I'm a recent grad with a BS and have no work experience pertaining to the career I want, which is a Windows System Admin. All these companies want 5+ years of experience and all that jazz. I'm currently receiving unemployment which is getting my wife and I bye but I still need to make a decent paycheck. I fill out many applications and had a few responses but they just didn't work out.

This is getting very depressing. :(

Try looking at http://webhostingtalk.com in the job offers section. There's also a place where you can post up your own resume as well. I got my job from there (I'm a linux admin) and I know of at least two of the larger web hosts that run Windows 2008 R2 platforms who regularly hire on that site.

For example: http://discountasp.net/careers.aspx

I think their site sucks, but they're legit and they pay well + offer benefits if you can get a job. You'd probably have to re-locate though if you don't live in their local area.

Many other providers will let you work from home, however. I've been working from home for almost 2 years now as a system admin and it's been great. There's plenty of opportunities to get your foot in the door in this industry - and windows hosting is growing fast. I used to work for a web host that offers ASP.NET hosting and most of our customers were on that side of things.

Good luck!

Just got an email about setting up an interview yesterday. I replied a few hours after I got it, but haven't heard anything yet today. This job hunting process is awful.

just got released from a restuarant job that i've enjoyed today because they have too much people working. the co worker told me that when they open a restuarant in spain the they will take me back, but that will be in a month or two. i feel pissed off as i have only been in the job three weeks.

What would YOU do GAF?!? I finally got a job offer!

I'm one of the lucky ones I guess to be currently employed, but I have been looking for another job since June. My job is considered stable (as a Personal Banker for a top bank) BUT i've been looking for an analyst position, since I am doing the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, and need 3 years under my belt as one.

The current offer takes me from 15/hr to 19/hr with time and a half for overtime (which they couldn't stress enough that there should be plenty), and it is a very reputable company. Here is a list of the pro's and con's... I NEED ADVICE!!

PROS

- Pay raise is VERY welcome, and my current position doesn't have a raise in the horizon.
- Qualifies for experience for my CFA designation
- Good company to have on the resume
- Great office environment with lots of people, including a hot boss lol
- Not sales related, which I am really trying to get away from
- Great chance to make extra with overtime
- I have nothing else that is solid in the horizon, and I'm dying to get out of my current position

CONS

- 40 minute commute each way, whereas my current one is 15
- It's a 6mo contract position (for budgeting purposes, but some stay for longer), whereas my current job is more stable
- Work is scarily monotonous, so I'm afraid I might get bored of it easily
- In the field of analysis, I ultimately want investment research or analysis, so not sure how much this one is gonna help me (other than the title), since it is more accounting based

Not sure what to do on this one...

BTW, I'll leave off with some advice. After months and months of mindless applying to positions online, I decided to revisit my resume to be tailored specifically to the positions I had mostly been applying to. The next day I received a phone call and they have moved really quickly with the process!!

How much gas mileage do you get on your car? Factor that in to an additional 50 minutes of commuting each day. If the amount you're paying for gas is going to cost more then the raise you're getting, it's probably not worth it.

Also, the 6 month contract isn't something I would quit a stable job for. Quitting a full time position to become a contractor with a job expiration date on it is really chancy is this economy. I really wouldn't take the risk right now.

Aim for something that's going to guarantee you a job in the long-term. Think of the future and not what's right in front of you.

@Unemployed GAF: My company is hiring a web designer (full time / 40 hours a week) right now, specifically to do wordpress development/customization/etc. I know we have some web design savvy people on here, so if you think it's up your alley shoot me a PM.

Is it for BoA? Because they are cutting some 40k jobs in the next few years. Hiring contractors doesn't seem to be in their future.

Well, after moving from Indonesia 4 months ago i have finally landed my first job as a part time crew member at Trader Joe's. Had the interview today and the dude hired me on the spot. I was nervous as hell because it was the first application i ever handed in, and was also my first "real" interview. Next week i get a 3 hour orientation then onto pay checks. Can't wait man.

Man, not even Craigslist has much to offer. I'm really leery about the positions that want you to e-mail them at a hotmail or gmail address. I'm sure, they're legit, but having a company domain name would be better, IMO.

I would suggest volunteering your services at first? It will help build up experience albiet maybe not the professional experience they may be looking for. It will at least show your passion for it. If anything it will give you something positive to talk about in a interview.

Im not actually familiar with that area, so I may be totally off the mark with that suggestion. I know it helps in certain fields within computing as it proves you actually know what your doing. Which is more what they are looking for than the 5 years experience tickbox.

I took another application. This time, I had the answers to the scenario based tests. The manager gave them to me. Aside from one or two, they didn't differ to my own answers. My application was once again rejected. To clarify the BS, looking at the grading score, my application would have been rated AAB. And yet when I saw the list of applicants that did pass, they ranged from C's to B's to A's. For example, one person had CCB and they were passed.

I don't understand why I'm being rejected. I even added stuff to the employment history and my references were legit. If this was an automated system, then how can it not make it to their list? I don't understand neither does anyone at the store - they are all baffled.

I give up.

There are some auto fail questions that might get you kicked out of the system. For example, I once worked at a job that had a 20 minute phone test that asked the person in 30 different ways if it was ok to steal, and if so, how much until it wasn't ok.

If you answered any question on the test saying, "Well if I saw a friend steal something below a dollar's worth, then I wouldn't report it," then you don't get hired. The idea is, no theft is acceptable.

There are like 8 easy questions bro. Nothing like that. Beside, you have to pass each section of the questions before you're allowed to submit. I answered the same as others who were passed

Craigslist is depressing. It's astounding how many jobs posted under the writing/editing section are for people offering work, but no pay. These are not internships, either.

It's weird because you have to pay to post an ad on Craigslist. It's not a lot of money, mind, but it's certainly enough that you have to wonder about the stones of people who will pay for an ad, but not for actual work done.

I can only imagine the sort of flim-flammery that goes on in other sections of Craigslist jobs.

I don't understand why more people don't get into Law enforcement. I make about 110,000 a year and that is considered a bad year here in New York City. Come on people they is money to be made here.

Yo dudes. What do you think about starting a PAC that makes a list of companies that employ Americans as a majority of workforce, people that employ locally instead of contracting, and people who don't offshore. And then a list of people that do. And make it available online as a political tool? And you know..lobbying and such etc etc is a hopeful possibility.

Thoughts?

So I all year I have been working in retail and three months ago I got hired were I currently am. Thing is, that I feel exhausted mentally and flat out sad even after one week of vacation and now I can't sleep with five hours until I have to wake up.

It's a full time work with a lot of angry customers always complaining, but it's when my colleagues get mad that I become a bit broken. Problem is, that I can feel I might not last much longer and finding a new job is very hard.

Mind you, I have jumped right into it getting trained in retail job, after getting over a big depression the year prior and I still got some social phobia and anxiety. Which leads to me not talking much, being nervous when I need to eat in my breaks and thus not relaxing. The anxiety causes me to stress, forget and a lack of concentration sometimes, which can annoy my colleagues when I ask for help.

I don't know what to do. I don't wanna be jobless or have a job with no social interaction. And I have fought very hard for the last two years and succeeded with all of my goals so far, but these past two weeks I have been unhappy.

What would you GAF have done? Quit?

It should be added that I don't dislike my job, it's just that all of these angry emotions from people are getting to me.
i work for a big pasta plant driving forklift so I actually enjoy my job, people I work with etc. Trust me, it's not worth it sticking with a job you hate. Look for a new job now, life's too damn short to waste it away working a job you hate. Just my two cents.

So tomorrow I have an interview at Sears for 'receiving associate'. I actually forgot I applied there and was surprised when I got the call. This is only my second call back this year and I'm really hoping it goes well.

The thing that irks me the most is when you apply for a job that your previous work experience is a literal perfect fit for (i.e. you did exactly the same job for 3 years at a different company) and you don't even get a phone interview for it. Fuck. :(

I had a phone interview scheduled for 2 PM today, but they never called. I called about an hour later, and it went to voicemail. This sucks.

Copied from my thread on here, but no-one answered:

I'm looking for advice. I've got two interviews, and they're coming on Wednesday and Thursday. Here's what I've done so far.

Questions I've prepped for:

1) Tell me about a time you led a team and found success?
2) Tell me about a time you delegated a set of tasks, but were met with obstacles?
3) Tell me about a time that you conflicted with co-workers?
4) Tell me about a time you met a deadline?
5) Tell me about a time you worked on a project that you didn't like?

In all of these instances I'm only talking about three situations, and then I'm changing the action and result for each question. I'm also working to incorporate each quality from the job ad into my answers.

Post-interview questions:

1) What do you see ahead for the company in the next five years?
2) Firm's most important assets?
3) What are the most immediate challenges of the positions that need to addressed in the first three months?
4) How will I be evaluated and how often?
5) What are the next steps in the process

I have company research - about a page of facts, figures and some info from recent news headlines. Realistically, how much do I need to mention?

Also, Greg Hahn's sketch actually came up with some good questions that might be asked that I'm unsure about. For example:

1) What kind of challenge are you looking for?
2) Where do you think you could use improvement? (Perfectionist? Always fall below standards, but doesn't stop me from trying?)
3) Do you have any experience? (Easy enough I guess. Just tie in my writing to the team work requirement, and the clear communication.)
4) What can you bring to the company?
5) Where do you see yourself in five years?
6) What's your definition of success?

FYI, Wednesday's interview is for an admin apprenticeship and Thursday's is for a secretary position. Some ideas for the above questions would help greatly.

Also, is this enough prep? I feel like I should be doing more.

Edit: how should I mention the fact I'm going holiday next week? Avoid it?

I think you're going to be super way over-prepared considering the jobs you're interviewing for.

The one piece of advice I can give is to know yourself, and what's on your resume. I've had interviews where the interviewer only had a copy of my resume and derived questions based solely on it.

I fear I may be joining you all again soon. Started a job a month ago and I'm terrible at it. It's my first proper job after college/university.

It's just that the workload is waywaywaywaywaywaaaaaay too much, I just can't keep up with everything. Then I mess something up and my managers give me a little disciplinary thing on their desk about how I need to get systems in place etc etc etc. And I do, I use the Outlook flagging and task functions to help me not forget other tasks as the others pile on, but it doesn't solve the issue of there not being enough hours in the day to get everything done.

It's so depressing how when I'm getting a task done that should have been done a week ago I get that little outlook box in the bottom keep popping up with more and more tasks that need actioning.

There's a file in my desk right now and I have no idea what I'm supposed to have done with it. I would look through for clues but there's just NO TIME. After barely meeting an important deadline today I'm worried about going to one of my managers about it.

Another thing is all the paperwork. particularly paperwork that's hard to make a folder for because of it's uniqueness, some of it goes missing. I've sorted this out kind of in that absolutely everything I receive goes in a desk draw and I make case files at the earliest opportunity now. Still, I think I may have lost some paperwork relating to an individual; on my task note I've put that I don't have enough forms of ID to process this document for an individual but I can't find ANY ID documents relating to him, and can't recall if he sent his original documents or not (he must have done but I can't find them). I have one other document in this situation.

Fuck sake what a mess. I can't cope. It's like I was dumped into this role as if I've been doing it all my life. Management support is lacking as they are similarly overworked and I dread it when they walk over to me as I know they are going to ask me about something and I just won't know the answer.

I was going to complain about how looking for a job sucks and how frustrating rejection is.... but after reading that above post, I think I wont.

I don't want to harp on you because I know that situation sucks, but you should have called at like 2:10 or something rather than an hour later. I don't know if it was a genuine mistake on their part, but I wouldn't put it past some employers to "test" you in some bizarre way like this.

been on the job for a week and so now but only work 3 days a week. (lol) not gonna last long

so I'm really considering joining the navy. I'm single but not that young almost 30.
I just need something stable and not to keep worrying about job

found out recently that my company is being bought out by a much larger company, still probably 6 months or more before it goes through all the way but right now my future employment is a big question mark, which sucks because it's the best paying job i've had by far, i'd take a huge loss with lateral move to another company in my field, im getting married next year and we have been saving to buy a house in the next 9 months...big wrench thrown in those plans

hopefully i won't need to post a follow up in this thread :(

Well shit. In a similar situation, I was interviewed a while ago and was told they'd get back to me, blah blah blah. It's been 6 weeks. I sent them an email several weeks ago asking to see if they had come to a conclusion and what feedback they could offer me. Again, no response.

I probably should have rang them, but I felt that if they hadn't offered me, then my call would simply confirm rejection. Shame, as their recruitment process was relatively short, a quick interview, and some technical/HR questions.

I've been unemployed on and off for years here in Mexico, catching small jobs here and there. Last april i had a major breakthrough tho, a huge international oil company that operates here needed to produce a training video with a 3d narrator. I took the job, i knew what needed to be done and the right people for the job even if i'm no expert at it but took the chance. It's been a great learning experience beside the nice paycheck and this week i'm opening my own bussines. Video and photography production, corporative and social. I'm investing around 7k in equipment mostly and basically going all inn.

I have huge faith in this and i know i have what it takes to make it work. Most of the money is being loaned by a relative but i have faith in me and i know i can make it work.

Wish me luck.

I waited an hour because I thought the interviewer might have confused time zones (she is in central, I am in eastern). I was emailed for to set up an interview last week, promptly responded with my availability the same day, and heard nothing from them until Friday, when I called about the interview. The woman said she had been out of the office.

I sent an email explaining the situation and called again today, but to no response.

If this is a test, it's a pretty sick one. It's an AmeriCorps position that doesn't pay much, so I don't see why hoops would be necessary.

Disagree. People are busy. If you are calling them when they are supposed to be calling you make sure you leave enough time to get done with whatever they are doing.

Oh, if it's for an Americorps position that actually makes sense. Did you research the place well? Some of those non-profits can be very busy, but some of them can also be extremely disorganized too, so I guess there's a possibility it was simply an oversight. I had a similar situation with a job through Americorps, I called to reschedule an interview and then eventually to cancel it, without getting any response at all.

brucewaynegretzky said:

Not sure how you can really disagree. If you have a phone interview scheduled for 2:00 and you hear nothing about a reschedule, it's not within the realm of the ridiculous to call at 2:10 to try and get in touch with them. How could he possibly know what or for how long they would be occupied? That's why I think it would be best to call as close to the interview time as possible.

So I'm pretty sure I screwed up my phone interview last week.

It wasn't really my qualifications or anything, it was my personability. I was so nervous that I didn't act relaxed and friendly, and the interviewer was the person I'd be working with everyday. So I doubt she'd choose me after that kind of a screw up.

Anyways, she said she'd let me know early this week, and guess I definitely have my answer.

how long do you guys normally wait to follow up with a company about a job? I applied for a job at a company back mid August. Around the 5th of Sept I got an email from the HR lead there and they wanted to further my application and I sent in my portfolio and stuff. I know they haven't checked it out yet because I can see detailed activity on my website. I also can go to their job page and I see that my app is still "in progress" and last updated on the 5th.

Should I just continue to wait and see what happens or should I email this guy back and ask to follow up on what I should do next etc?

I think it depends on the company.

You should try looking up what people applying for similar positions at the company went through in the interview process. Glassdoor.com or sites like that- just google [company name]interview process or something like that.

Also the people who are looking further into your application might be busy and haven't had time yet to look at your stuff.

As for contacting them again, maybe wait until the end of the week? I'm not sure about the etiquette for that sort of stuff.

Happened the same to me!

they called me last week to appoint for a phone interview for yesterday at 5pm.

I waited and I didnt get any call, so I sent them an email repeating them my phone number. They didnt call me today and didnt answer back the email :(

So I plan to call them tomorrow to know whats up. It is very unpolite for their part to do that.

I have to say I just started looking for a job last week, so let's see how well it goes. I already did a phone interview for a big electronics multinational in the medical field.

I have a "second interview" with a credit services firm tomorrow, and after getting past the assessment stage the job is so close I can taste it. The assessment was a group exercise (the earth faces certain doom, which of these ten people will survive?) and a numeracy test with individual questions as well.

Has anyone else been asked to a second interview? How much might this differ to the first, which is the standard job interview? I'm hoping this is just for them to make sure they can stand me at the workplace.

I just took on a new gig so if anyone is looking for a job my current company is hiring. Graphic Design/Sales job in Brooklyn NY. Contact me for deets.

sorry for saying "deets"

Just browsed my company's open job reqs. Looks like they're not hiring for entry-level Windows admins at the moment, but keep an eye on it as the reqs get updated frequently: http://jobs.rackspace.com/

We *are* however always looking for Linux admins, entry-level or otherwise in case you want to shift gears ;)

If you're looking to build a resume and you have a personality to match the culture here you have a shot. There's something to be said about starting at the bottom of the ladder and building your skill set while climbing the ranks.

Just to give you some perspective, I started here in 2007 as a L1 linux support technician, and I could only do basic Linux tasks. Fast forward to now and I'm a lead engineer for one of our flagship products which runs on 14000 servers and counting.

Definitely a place that allows for growth, provided you don't mind moving to Texas :D

Funny, I just met someone the other day who works for your company.
