anyone else unemployed?

Anyone have success with temp agencies? I'm looking into some in Chicago, but I'm not entirely sure how they work. Are online resume submissions enough, or should I go to their offices?

So I passed a group interview at Myer (yaaay). They said the next step was checking my references, which could take several weeks, but its been six weeks now and I still haven't heard back. I know someone else got a rejection letter, but I haven't received anything at all. I spoke to my father about it and he thinks they are just waiting for a position to open up, but what do you guys think? Should I email them or something?

I'd call them. My references were checked in one day. Not sure what kind of company Myer is and I don't want to look it up but that seems like an awfully long time to just call some references. Given the length of time that has gone by it very well could be bad news but I know what waiting so long feels like. It once took over two months for me to find out I got a job from the time I interviewed. Call them.

I was unemployed for a year and a half after graduating summer 2010. Starting looking a job a during my final semester, had a couple interviews, but no offers.

Kept searching through the summer and fall. I had one good chance that I completely messed up. There was only one other applicant I had to beat, but my brain deciding to sleep in that day. I was asked some basic questions and blanked on most of them. 10 minutes after the interview my brain wakes up and the answers become clear. Really felt stupid after that one.

Then during the fall, I injured my foot, which kept me at home when my sister was sick. So I got sick as well, which kept me in bed for another couple weeks.

By then it was the holidays, and I found out I needed to have an operation in January. Since I was just recovering from being sick, I was still stuck at home to ensure I stayed healthy. The operation and recovery time took me to spring. So that was 6 month gone without being able to be much that involved leaving the house. The only good thing about it was that I didn't have to shovel snow that winter.

Kept up the job search into this summer. Had a really good interview in July, every step of the interview process going well, even getting a call from HR a couple business days after the interview. Of course we can't have things going well, so after waiting a couple weeks for a response, and found out there was a hiring freeze, putting me back where I started.

Fast forward to the end of August, when checking for jobs, I find the job I had that interview for has been reposted. I sent an email asking about it, and I week later, I get an offer.

Feels good to be working again. I wish every gaffer looking for work the best of luck.

You guys think this is a good strategy? (a quick update on my job hunt)

Job #1

Great phone interview. Had the company recruiter call me back 1hr later to get more info and let me know they would submit me for the position. I emailed the recruiter a week later and he responded that there were no updates other than he knew that my application is now in the Hiring Manager's hands (which is a good sign).

Course of Action: Email the recruiter on Monday (2wks after my last email) for another update.

Job #2

Company responds (via email) 1 week after submitting my resume/CV asking for more info. I email back providing info (thankfully, I had the experience he is looking for), but no response back from the company. I send a follow-up email yesterday (1 week after my email) and the guy responds back basically saying they are busy and haven't had a chance to discuss new hires. But he hopes they would discuss it next week.

Course of Action: Send another follow-up email 2 Mondays from now (Oct 31st) to see if there are any updates.

Sound alright to you guys?

Both, if possible. It's a lot harder to ignore a person if they're standing in front of you.

Well, I already quit the electronics store after working there for two hours.

Why?

Because I got a phone call offering me the copywriting position at the Internet marketing firm! I was actually doing training on the computer in the back when I got the call. Stepped outside to answer, got the good news, and immediately walked back inside and told the manager what had transpired. Then I shook his hand, thanked him for the opportunity and walked out. Took my tie off before I even got to my car (and the new job has NO dress code).

I felt horrible but elated at the same time. I could already tell the job was going to super shitty, and I was rescused from it within two hours. Ridiculously, sickeningly, over-the-top lucky.

I start at the marketing firm tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Welp, I'm out of a job...again. Technically this position was a two month internship, and while they liked my work, they seemed to just run out of things for me to do. I'm still going to work for them on a contract/freelance basis, but the steady paycheck is no more.

The job search process begins anew!

Just got that Account Executive position for a Tech PR firm after smashing a presentation and second interview. Keep at it guys, it'll work out in the end!

Just had an awesome interview and totally got the front desk receptionist job at the Animal Hospital. Not really sure of my starting pay but I know it is at least $10 an hour. Not much, but better than the 0 income I have right now. Should be getting at least 30 hours a week if not more. Really helps that the job is about 10 minutes drive from where I am living right now, not much gas expense at all. Can't wait to start and see what my schedule and pay ends up being.

High Five deserved man. The feeling of being unemployed for a year and a half is hard to shake off. And similarly, I ended up with the job I had now with a company I applied with last September.

Grats!

I may be out of unemployment today or on monday! I had a good interview for an I+D position on tuesday, and got another interview plus some skill/personality tests on thursday.

I think I did pretty well in the first interview (the HR even had played WoW and we chatted a bit about it, and the I+D director thought my skills were perfect for the job), and I think I did pretty well on the tests on thursday (the interview was cancelled, the big boss was required elsewhere). I didnt finish the skills test but I answered more questions than the other two guys that were there, and besides, there are 3 vacancies for this position and they didn't seem to be interviewing a lot of candidates, only a few.

HR said he will probably phone on friday if he had some good news, and if he didn't , it will probably be monday. I prefer a work in an industrial environment because I think that has more future in my country , but I'll probably enjoy I+D a lot more (I'm quite creative).

I'll write with news when (if) they arrive. My girlfriend got a job this wednesday, and a friend another on monday, if I get this one it will have been an awesome week.

PD:Losing faith now :(

I have honestly thought of getting a custom stamp made for some of those applications. The logistics don't work out well, but I wana see the look on someone's face when I pull it out and complete their generic application in seconds.

So after 2 and a half years of unemployment and 1 and a half years of doing fuck all(I was doing college in that last year) I finally got a job 2 weeks ago, even if its just retail.

Hurray!

The problem is... I might have been fired. Here's the story.

After doing 3 days of solid work my manager called me over and said I was late for 2 out of the 3 days. I wasnt really "late", I clocked in on the dot both times but they want me in 10 minutes early? I asked them why, but the reason is bullshit. They want to discuss what im going to do, but we both know that im just sitting behind the tills for the start.

Anyway after he tells me that, I have had a good as usual and at the end I tell him im going on holiday next week for 5 days. He seemed cool with it, but after how we left things before, im wondering whether he thinks im a liability and taking holidays and stuff (The holiday was already paid for before i joined, but I didnt tell him this before I started work, because there was confusion between me and my family)

After the holiday I have text him twice asking when to come in next and he has ignored me now for 2 days. Am i being fired?

Two of my friends have no jobs, my workplace is hiring, so i gave two of my friends the same number, one if guaranteed to get the job, the other will not.

Its true what the say, the working world is all about who you know, and in my friends case they know me.

Success will find one of them in the next two days, the other friend will have to go back to the painful job search.

I'm glad one of them will get it, but also sad one of them will get let down.

Unless two of them get hired, i have no idea how many people they are looking for.

But guys I'm doing my part to get more people into work, to have there wallets full of cash, and make something of themselves, like i have done. With Christmas round the corner i want nothing more than these two friends to have success in there corner.

Cause I don't fit either.
Temp agencies will typically have a field they specialize in. Basically, it depends on which agency you go through.

Sound like he wanted to fire you before you told him about the vacation (reason why they seemed ok with it) Cause your vacation bullcrap would have gotten you fired 90 percent of the time.

Nobody wants to employ someone that works for one week and then then with a few days notice takes a 5 day vacation. That jack screams lack of responsiblity, unreliable and completely flaky.

Just to add, Drealmcc0y should probably have mentioned the possibility of a vacation to the manager/HR people during the process, even if exact plans were not hashed out yet.

Edit: Unless the confusion was that you didn't think you were going at all? You still probably should have told them as soon as you found out, not a few days before you were planning to leave.

"during the process"

Thats funny. I didnt even have an interview, he gave me the job on the spot when he made me wait over an hour while he was on a conference call.

He sent me a text today telling me to work on wednesday, so its all good.

I know. My family argued that they had already paid for it, so I had to go.

Of course, it was hard to argue.... free holiday after all.

Still, be very gracious towards the manager next time you see him.

And as a general rule of thumb, until you get settled into a new job (about two weeks to a month) you should always arrive 10-15 minutes early

vaelic said:

Especially in the first week, you don't question. They ask you to come in 10 minutes early, you come in 10 minutes early. Frankly, just in general you should be showing up early and leaving later early on. You're creating an impression of yourself, and you want to be seen as a hard worker.

You need to feel your way around the culture of the company, and once you've established yourself (like 2-3 months in or even later) and you see what the routine is, then you can start asking about that stuff.

Quick question: QR codes in resumes, Yay or Nay?
If you've developed a mobile-specific site, then I suppose a QR code (in addition to the URL) wouldn't be unwarranted. For anything else, I can't see any reason you'd want to include one.

Applied for an office coordinator-type position at a VFX firm. It's kind of the ideal next step for me since it'd get me some exposure to scripts and editing, whilst letting me exercise my muscle when it comes to running an office, customer service skills with all the firm's visitors and guests, and so on.

They asked for a cover letter and a resumé, and I think I handed them a nice package with all that last week (threw some humor into the letter that I think/hope they'll appreciate).

How soon is too soon to visit again and follow up? Was thinking to swing by tomorrow or Thursday, having brought everything in last Thursday.

Would it be over-zealous to e-mail everything to them in addition to having brought in physical copies last week? They said to do one or the other, but I mean, I figure if they haven't contacted me within two weeks it can't hurt to 're-apply' and get more eyes on my stuff?

edit-

and lol @ taking a 5-day vacation during the first year of employment after searching for so long. What??

I'm sure at some point they asked you about your availability, yes? That's when you bring that up. I'd doing some seasonal work right now. Had a trip scheduled for Sunday the 16th. When I was being asked when I was available, I gave him the hours I could do it and mentioned 16th, "this Sunday", as well.

At last I got the usual response: "We liked you, but we've decided to pick other people more suitable for the position we were looking for" At least he told me there will be new positions in another area, and he will give my curriculum to the guys in that area personally, so I don't need to resend my CV. Another person I know also got rejected and he only told him that new positions would probably open in a while, so it's a "bit" of good news.

Well, this sucks. I was able to go to my adviser, but he wasn't able to help me with internships, which was fine. I was then redirected to the college's career development center so I had to schedule an appointment there. I went in today, and as much as I was expecting considering my cancerous luck with many things in my life, there are no internships for my major (Computer Information Systems). I've effectively wasted my time at this college, and I'm just about finished.

I feel absolutely demoralized. The only jobs I've ever had have been volunteer ones that will never, ever blossom into anything that will give me money or fulfillment, which is what I want more. It seems all of my endeavors with education and hoping for some career also seem to be a fucking waste.

I feel like getting a knife and slashing my throat right open. What a way to start off turning 22...I guess I was right in making sure I didn't celebrate my birthday, considering there's nothing to celebrate in my near-meaningless life. If it wasn't for my family, I probably already would have done damage to myself.

Sorry for the rant, GAF. Feel free to make fun of me if you want, I probably have it coming somehow.

I don't really get the problem? Look for an internship elsewhere, lots of companies offer them on websites /recruitment / so on, but they don't directly announce it at the college. If you can't do that, then look for a first job related that requires little to no experience with something you are familiar with thanks to your career. I don't really know what's like in your country but here in Spain I see lots of internships for that sort of thing, and boy, we are fucked up. You might have some competitors, but that's the way it's always going to be.

And stop with the other nonsense. You are very young, and you have plenty of time even to study another major if you feel like it. I don't think you are going to need it anyway.

The problem is that when I look, almost all of the internships I've seen require 2-5+ years of experience, and these are for entry-level jobs. How in the hell am I supposed to get something like that as an entry-level job when I have no previous jobs that honed on that? It's a little mind-boggling and a bit of a catch 22: you need to get your foot in the door to get experience, but they want years of experience to allow you to put your foot in the door. I assumed the college would have had connections to what the college actually went over with the major, so it would be easier to transfer to a job after college. My luck being the way it is, it doesn't seem to work that way for me.

I'm also sorry for the sappy rant. I guess with the past few months being absolute shit for me, it really gets to me that on every turn I take to make things better, they just stagnate the way they are. It goes beyond looking for a job, by the way.

I didn't know you had more problems, but about what you say now... internships with 2-5 years of experience? that's bullshit, people with that kind of experience don't need an internship. Just apply for that kind of positions, and they will eventually reach you. It's probably going to be a long road ahead until you get your first job, but at the end, you will get something . I'm trying for more than 7 months and no luck, and I'm 24. I know some people that are going to start looking for their first job at 27. If you are not in immediate need for money, you have time for this.

Also, that you find no positions open now does not mean that won't be new positions in the future. I have to check these kind of things daily (it would probably work weekly) to catch up. Good luck finding something! And do search for it in other cities as well, you might have more luck there.

I'm assuming you were the guy from earlier in this thread. This once again shows to me that you're school has not properly taught you how to search and apply for careers. It blows my mind how helpless you appear to make yourself. Again, the majority of students do not rely on their career services to provide direction to internships. There is no magic wand they can wave to give to students. Students who succeed find these internships on their own and are proactive in talking with professionals to get connections and information on potential openings.

The fact that your career services didn't give you any help had you throwing up your arms, thinking the rest of your life is now a failure makes me think you aren't even ready for a professional job. CIS/MIS is one of the biggest fields in business that has opportunities/internships for students because they have you doing a lot of bitch work (hate to break it to you, but that's the truth). If you don't think there are any out there, then I'm sorry, I have no sympathy for you.

The issue I've had is with this major, I don't really have any connections to look for internships. It's as if I'm in the dark, and I'm looking for some help. I've tried looking online, but all of those jobs require years of experience, and I was assuming that going to a college and talking about it there would help on a more local level. I'd like a job that would work where I live, and there are internships here; it's just none of them are for my major. That's the problem. I'm sure there are jobs out there, but I haven't found any that work for me where I live.

As I already mentioned, the reason I was throwing my arms is because I'm frustrated with a lot of things in my life, most of which I've yet to talk about on this forum. I know I probably don't have it as bad as others in the world with problems, and once getting the rant out of my system and realizing this, I've calmed down. Please don't think it's just because of a failed internship search that I went all bitchy, but it was something that set me off.

Had a great in-person interview yesterday! 3 guys shooting off questions at me for about 45min, and I did pretty damn good. I mean, it was smiles all around and the senior guy (I think the company VP) told me I did great. :)

QUESTION: When do you guys think I should send a follow-up email...ya know...thanking them for the interview? Or if at all? I'm thinking about sending it tonight (7pm or so) when I get home.

And it's kinda funny because I've been in group interviews with my current company, and damn it if I wasn't nervous being on the other side this time. :lol I didn't expect a group interview, at all.

I'd like a job that would work where I live, and there are internships here; it's just none of them are for my major. That's the problem. I'm sure there are jobs out there, but I haven't found any that work for me where I live.

While they're nice, internships aren't the end all and be all. I never had an internship. I didn't even complete my CS degree (have a different one). I got started with entry-level QA, and after a few years, I was able to get into a programming position.

BTW, a lot of MIS people I know go into support. Have you tried looking in that direction?

As I already mentioned, the reason I was throwing my arms is because I'm frustrated with a lot of things in my life, most of which I've yet to talk about on this forum. I know I probably don't have it as bad as others in the world with problems, and once getting the rant out of my system and realizing this, I've calmed down. Please don't think it's just because of a failed internship search that I went all bitchy, but it was something that set me off.

Where do you live and what school do you go to?

Anyone have any experience with schools? My wife was a HS guidance counselor who, after working and finishing the school year, moved to be with me in a different city. We looked for jobs during the summer, and it seems they hire internally before externally, so jobs filled up quickly and we didn't make any headway. She's more than qualified, but again, jobs went quickly and there were a lot of applicants from what we saw.

I have the phone number of the principal of a school being opened next year (a coworker of mine attends PTO meetings and the like at the school where the man currently works), so we probably will give him a call for the hell of it to see if we can at least get her name into his head.

Any suggestions? We're thinking about trying to at least get her as spot as a substitute admin at a school to at least get her foot in the door.

Honestly, anything would work. Anything entry level is fine enough for me, and it doesn't even have to pay. Really, I'm not looking for money, just experience. Even then, I don't know where to start. I think the problem with me is simply finding a way to get my foot in the door. That's why I feel like a chicken without a head with all of this.

That was the path I took. I was a CS grad who wanted to be a sysadmin/sys engineer, and technical linux support was my way in.
