Don't think about how embarrassing it would be if you fucked it up really badly. I mean, people on the other end would be laughing at you for the next few days after if you did fuck it up.

Have your resume handy. Have a sheet of paper and pen to write things down. Find a quiet place to take the phone call, and be ready for the call at least 10 minutes early.

Don't be afraid of pausing for a second to figure out a proper answer, and don't be afraid to talk through what you're thinking.

I'm also a pacer, so I find it useful to find somewhere I can pace where I talk.

Don't know whether I've fucked up already, but I was booked in for two and they just rang up. I said I was booked in for two and we agreed to talk just after two. I was calm and collected throughout the whole thing, so I dunno.

How early did they call? Can't tell what timezone you're in.

If it was several hours early, then I think it's ok to explain to them that you were expecting their call at a certain hour, and that you're not able to take the call now.

An hour before (in UK btw). Was just about to have lunch/having lunch.

lol, got through the telephone interview anyway despite floundering all over the place (not the first interview where that has happened). Online application coming up sometime today (whenever I get it), and then if that is successful then an assessment day.

Any advice for online applications/assessment days?

Got an interview tomorrow for a position of Hardware/Software Engineer in a small I+D business. They do a lot of stuff with computer vision, and it's a field that I like (I took an optional course on that in my university). The problem is that it's not really a job for an Industrial Engineer profile, but as thinks are right now, working in something I like even if the pay may not be good enough, would be a miracle.

It's weird they are calling me now, I sent my CV one month and a half ago. I think they picked someone else before and he probably left the company, so maybe they don't want to do a lot of interviews and it's an urgent thing. I hope I have luck.

Opportunity 12858 ends the same way as all the ones before it, "Thanks for wasting your whole morning volunteering your time, we have your résumé, but no jobs for now.  Bye!"

Everyone with all these jobs started out with networked positions and favors being done. All these great opportunities I get through connections all result in the same disappointing speech at the end. ALAS

It's always such a treat to see studios and sets full of miserable employees who bitch, moan, frown and smartphone their way through their days while the rest of us smile even during volunteer opportunities. I've never taken any job I have for granted, and would probably do what all those louts were doing, better and for half the pay. So frustrated! lol

At least it's one more link in the network. It's bound to pay off eventually.

Just had an excellent interview with Boots, I had plenty to say with both me and the manager smiling throughout. The shop floor exercises didn't leave me silent or stammering, so even if I don't get the job I'm feeling pretty good right now.

Ed: Just got the rejection email. No call.

I had a good interview with a small IT&electronic industrial services company. I think I've done great in all areas, except they may be looking for a more technical-based profile and I have a more general profile. They liked my Arduino and a bit of programming hobbies, and my level of English, but probably didn't like my skill level at electronics, compared to someone from a specific degree.

We'll see, if they like the fact I know general things about industrial processes (as they do services only for industrial companies) that may outweigh a possibly candidate with a lot of technical background on whatever they are looking for (they didn't want to specify).

They said the pay won't be high, but it seems a nice first job, in something I like and not far from home. I tried to be very enthusiastic about it.

If not, maybe I get a Dota 2 invitation...

That sucks. They probably found somebody with experience or whatever, but if you did good at that interview you will do good at another one and eventually find a job. Good luck with future opportunities!

Awesome! My background check came back unclean and there is nothing I've done except for speed a few times. Charged in a state I've never been in.

I have 9 days to get this worked out...

I think it might be the middle name but apparently someone with my First name, Last name, and Birth Date is scum. Nice sharing it all with you bro!

I wonder if identity theft has anything to do with it tho...

Is there a free background checker?

If you know the location, you may be able to search for open warrants on the county level.

I'd shell out the money if you have it though. Looks like the average is $50 for an FBI check.

Any consultants on this board? I have a poli sci degree, and I've read that many graduates go on to become consultants.

Someone hook me up. I'm trying to network on GAF, here.

Oh great. Need to print some documents off and I don't have enough paper or the ink the print them off. Fuck, looks like I'm not getting this job then.

I'm sure there are places around town that print for less than a dollar.

Switch problems with me!

Ink working *touches wood*. Dad's picking up paper tomorrow morning (hopefully...).

Edit: felt terrible. Group task felt okay (I aimed to take the lead, and did mostly). Interview was horrible: body language of the interviewer looked closed; she seemed to have a pretty negative expression. The only good point was when I asked her a question and she said 'That's a good question'. We also had the second party of a computer-based assessment, which felt alright. Don't expect to get the job though.

I applied for a marketing manager trainee for a company called Vivid Marketing (no not porn lol) in Baltimore, MD.

What are your guys, thoughts? Just want some opinions. Here is the site:

http://www.vividbaltimore.com/#!careers

I live in Florida, so I have to be picky when it comes to whether I should fly or not. They want to see me for an interview.

-Developing and implementing original training techniques and tactics to achieve internal goals.
-Developing strong leadership skills to build a high performance, cross-functional team environment.
-Managing external customer needs.
-Developing excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Initially we train people on the above fundamentals, but we further train the candidates for management. The remainder of the training is discussed with the recruiting staff during the hiring process.

It seems like they train you to become a manager of some sort.

EDIT-WHOA A SCAM? Just found this:

I may be lucky next week. Got 2 interviews for two very important services companies (industry consultancy, finance, and things like that). Well, they are not really interviews but rather group dynamics, and they are both in Madrid. Luckily one is held on Monday, and the other one on Tuesday, so I can go to Madrid and do both in two days. And apart from that, I still have that process with a local I+D industry service company going on.

This is huge for me. From only 1 interview from august-september-middle october, now in only 2 weeks I'm going to have 4 of them. This may be my way out of this post, at least I hope so.

I am not sure if I will like working as a consultant, but both interviews with I+D positions made me realize I don't care that much about the position itself. Plus, my girlfriend is going to work to Sevilla, and that's nearer Madrid than Valencia (where I live).

If 2 of the three companies try to recruit me, I will have a big trouble deciding. The job in Valencia would be a bit low wage, but in something I like (electronics I+D), and I would not have to rent an apartment. But that experience will only allow me to work as I+D or in an industry electronic related.

The two big companies are well, big, and possibly it would be easier to be promoted. The wage will be a bit higher, but I will have to find rent. It will be in a city a bit more near my girlfriend, but I don't actually know somebody in the city. And I have no idea how useful my experience there will be, but it will be probably industry-consultant related, and that will probably help me to get into any position for a factory and the like.

This weekend I have to do serious research, just in case.

Let this be a lesson to all GAFers. Research EVERY company you are applying to.

Be very careful of who you apply to, especially when you sign up at careerbuilder/monster. If a company contacts you out of the blue saying that they reviewed your resume online and think you'd be a perfect fit for their company, chances are it's a scam. They know people are desparate for jobs, and some will jump at any chance of earning a paycheck.

For example, I had an accounting firm email me earlier this week (I'm an engineer, not an accountant). Damn, I should've copied the email here. Anyway, the email basically said all I needed was a PC, bank account, and the ability to use Western Union. :lol Clearly a scam where they send you fake checks to deposit, then Western Union the money overseas. The email said something like earning potential of $600 - $4000 per week.

Those aren't the kind of (sorta high) paying jobs where it's difficult for a company to find employees.

Like the old saying goes; If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is.

Welp, I'll probably be unemployed for a bit after 2 January.
I start terminal leave on 12 Dec and officially am a civilian after the 2nd. I have some leave I will be selling back though, so another month of pay will come to me.
South Carolina is supposed to have pretty terrible unemployment though. I guess it's like $326 max a week. I might need to find a cheaper apartment.

Hoping to get a year-long stint in Afghanistan or Iraq. I'll have my security clearance for a couple more years so that will be attractive, but I really wish I had gotten some certs. I am a maintenance guy, but some people I have talked to in the civilian sector have told me that there are some certain certifications out there that coming out of the military with those certs, they could guarentee me a job. But I don't have too much expertise in the computer side of things, where the demand is. Servers and networking is something I don't know, but SATCOM is something in high deman I guess, so I'll see if I can get anything.

Good luck to everyone!

Looks like I get to return to my part-time job at the store for the holiday months if I want it. I feel grateful and so on for getting something to tide me over while I search for career-related jobs....but man, what a kick in the nuts. To go right back after all my schooling, a degree and a postgrad diploma. Alas.

*GRATEFUL*

I did the same thing when I got out of the AF but I had them convert my mil slot to a civilian one...you might want to hit the HRO office on base and look at the NAF jobs...as someone who is going to have Vet Preference, you will have priorty...the benefits to this are staying employed throug the rest of the year, and if nothing works out, then your one step away from those coveted GS jobs....

My buddy had one of those Iraq/Afghan jobs lined up and it fell through based on the reductions going on...

if you have any questions on this transition, feel free to IM me...I know how crazy things must be... : )

Good luck. Have you contacted Orion International? Not in the service myself but they were apparently short of able engineering candidates and got ahold of me for some job opportunities when I was out of luck. Dunno if I got lucky w/ a good recruiter, but he had a very gung-ho approach, got me placed in several interviews quickly (one of which led to my current job), was also the only one that bothered to listen to my 'hey I'm actually looking for west coast jobs' appeal (I was in Tennessee at the time for my previous job). If they'll do that much for me they should give plenty of support to fellow servicemen.

I did the phone interview a few minutes ago and we scheduled the in person for Monday morning. I can't believe the high/rush whatever I get when I even have a scheduled interview I guess being out of work for 10 months will do that to anyone.

So... background check disputes...

I disputed the background check the other day with the company that did it before I got my copy because I'm clean as a whistle knew there was a dumb mistake.

She said she'd try to speed it up, but, tick tock, now they just have until Thursday to clear things up with the employer so I wont miss out on the new hire start date.

All the charges are for someone with a different middle name and I have multiple documents proving I have and always had a different middle name.

Do you think I could speed things up, or is the employer obligated to wait for their background checking company?

What messes with me the most is that the employer on told me directly on the phone that the criminal reports matched my middle name and SSN but they don't. In fact, every case says the SSN isn't available.

I crushed this interview today. I was on such a roll I even complimented the receptionist as the owner was walking me out and she just happened to be his wife.

Still don't know though he said he would have a decision for me by the end of the week. That is scary, fingers crossed.

Been working at White Castles for a few weeks now ... suck balls because of the way WC works (Open 24-7 so I get these shitty night hours. And apparently WC is different to other places like Mc or BK in that everyone has to know how to do EVERYTHING. So at any given moment I can go from taking orders to sweeping to taking out the trash to restocking to fixing food....).

So I'm back in job-search mode! Finally going to take the TSO CBT test next week, anyone know what's on it? It's supposed to be stuff you don't have to study for ... but it's like a hour or 2 long :/.

Also gonna look into getting a dish-washer job at this Gino's Pizza not too far from here. I wanted to do that instead of working fast-food anyway and I would prefer JUST cleaning and washing stuff/ restocking with hours that would allow me to leave around the time the place closes instead of having these unpredictable-mostly-night-time-hours in this shitty location that results in me getting home at 12-1 at night.

I wouldn't lose hope just yet though as the interview for my previous job I also thought I messed up and one of the guys who was conducting the interview ( there was two) was giving me some hard questions and his expression over every answer was negative. Also his notepad was practically empty while the other guy jotted down about a page.

Anyway to my amazement I got the job a couple of days later and found out later that as soon as I left the building they went up to the girl I would be working with and told her that she would be working with me.

Got an email for an interview on Friday afternoon in which the recruiter mentioned the office is business casual. Does that mean I shouldn't wear a tie or suit jacket? I've always thought it's not really possible to be overdressed for an interview.

It wouldn't hurt to ask the recruiter, especially if they're not actually an employee of the company.

Suit jacket without tie would probably be good.

You might as well go all out, then. When I took my test for the Secret Service, there were two people who wore full-on suits. The rest wore what I described in my last post, which was stated in the email to wear.

I wear jeans a a tshirt to work every day but I still suited up for my interview

Well, I have a new interview booked for Thursday: Funeral Arranger. It's strange but it feels like it's something I could be good at, especially putting people at ease.

Tenks said:

Which is my train of thought exactly. I had an interview last December and they said the same thing, and I wore a full suit. The interviewer's only reaction was to say "you know you didn't need to wear a tie, right?".

I always go suited up. If the people working in the same position you are applying for usually are suited, well, go with a suit + tie. If they usually wear a shirt + jeans, going with a suit won't hurt but you can go with no tie.

That's the procedure I'm following.

I had two interviews for the same position (different companies) , a sort of process consultant. It's not in my home city, might be a boring job, they pay is not that great (still, better than most in this times), but it might be a good opportunity. Sadly one of them is for September 2012, but I said I'm willing to continue with the selection process in case I am unemployed again at the moment / with a job I'm not satisfied with.

I would love to get a job in something more technical, as long it's not something very specific. But all the things I see of the sort are internships with a very low money pay, and not exactly in my area of expertise (Industrial engineer - electronics and automation with a bit of knowledge on programming) but a bit IT related. I'm not sure if I'm willing to follow that route, as I will be competing with people with IT-related degrees, and really, they will know more than me about the technical tidbits .

PS: And now after posting this I find an interesting position in a company I've already applied, they liked me, but I was rejected because I didnt fit the position. I hope I'm luckier this time.

Just made a phone call to a local listing and an interview has been set up for Monday. Part time work for 10-12 hours for the first three weeks and then 20-30 in the last. Really, and I do hate this cliche, but it is true, beggars can't be choosers at this point.

The position sounds a bit of a clusterfuck in some ways. It's data entry for an NHS contract, but if work dries up then you're training to be an advisor for smokers who are quitting.

We'll see how it goes, I guess. Not sure what to to think at this point.

Also, there's a position going in the paper that says "Earn £300+ O.T.E P/W". Hiring 15 full-time staff. Worth it or not?

Edit: Second interview on Tuesday. Would be really awesome to get it.

Good luck! Even if the hours and work are complicated an NHS reference will probably do wonders for you. Make an impression and they might just want you back.

Bear in mind that's on-target-earnings. Work your arse off and you'll probably get the £300, but it's far from guaranteed.

How many hoops do you jump through before you say "screw it"?

I was waiting almost 2 weeks for a background check to dispute to finish so I could start working the 11th. (None of my personal documents with a different middle name were accepted.)

It finished in my favor hours after the shift started.

I called and they said there was a "red flag" on my file and to call corporate. Corporate Human Resources said everything was OK and to call them back.

They said to wait 24 hours for their computers to update, despite the fact that they saw the updated background check, and then to wait another 24 hours.

Now they are saying "I lied" about something on my application, wouldn't tell me what, and to go to the local recruiting office I was offered the job at and to "tell them everything on my application is ok".

Don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, but I expect bull shit. I wonder if I can even speak with a damn recruiter.

I would recommend people to network more, unfortunately it happens at bars. its the holiday season. definitely look at retail shops more.i hope i helped.

Well it looks I'm finally getting an offer for job in Japan finally. The problem is I may or not be able to manage the funds to pay for the start up costs. I'm going to apply for grad school and see if I can get in. If grad school fails, I'll just accept the job and hope I can scrounge up the funds for it. Things are finally looking up though.

I'm on a temp assignment until the end of december. There are I believe, three openings that will be available and there are 6 temps vying for the position. I'm pretty sure one of them took themselves out of the running because they only seem interested in causing trouble. So 5. I need this so bad. It would be a game changer for my family. Each day I get more and more stressed because there are factors out of my control at the job that will effect my hiring. It's slowly starting to really, really get to me.

Went in for the data entry interview. Well I say interview, it was more me being put in a small room and listening to the man talk about the position. When I could remark I did, but honestly I couldn't get a word in edge ways lol. I asked some questions of course, and left saying I'd love to work there.

I'll know by Friday. What criteria they're going to use to choose someone, I don't know. I left them my CV and cover letter as they requested.

The only fuck up I made is lying about driving. I live very close, so if they push me on it I'll have to backtrack and say something like I'm learning/parents borrow a lot/catch bus. Shouldn't have said that really >_<
