How the hell do you get the console to recognize them?!?! It works fine with the wireless controller that came with the thing and the wired controller I bought but I cant get the 2nd wireless to work.

Apparently there is a button on the 360 you have to press. It seems obvious now but it said nothing about it on the xbox website. I had to call to find out.

Wireless controller instructions online

To connect your wireless controller to your console:

1. Press and hold down the Xbox Guide button until the controller turns on.
2. If your console is not on, press the Power button to turn on the console.
3. Press and release the connect button on the console.
4. Press and release the connect button on the controller.

First hold down the controller power button till it flashes. Then press the signal button on the 360. then press and hold the little while button on top of the controller till they read. If you see the ring position on the controller, it worked.

To disconnect the controller hold down the power button on it till the option to disconnect it comes up. Note that if the controller position is logged in as a player you must log the player out FIRST before deactivating it. Otherwise theres an annoying message that wont go away asking you to reconnect the controller.

My bad, the helpful page linked to above is UK only. For the US site, a little digging give this. (From the front page, select 'Support', then 'Search for information on common issues, frequently asked questions, and more.' - the link is on the list on the next page and is cunningly titled 'Xbox 360: How to connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller'.

1. Press and hold down the Xbox Guide button until the controller turns on. The Xbox Guide button is the round button with the green
"X" near the center of the controller.
2. Make sure that the Xbox 360 console is turned on. If the console is not turned on, press the power button. The power button is the large round button on the Xbox console.
3. Press and release the connect button on the Xbox 360 console. The connect button is the small round button on the Xbox 360 console.
4. Press and release the connect button on the controller. The connect button is the small button on the front edge of the controller.

Failing the other methods, it is on 3 pages in the manual. Page 21 if you are an English speaker, page 45 if you are French, or page 69 if you are Spanish.

i have teh FOWAR wireless controllers - so i can play myself at Gauntlet!

Anyways, a very interesting one for you :

if you use a Japanese wireless controller on the US box, the controller will not sync with the machine.

If you then insert the usb battery charger, then the controller is correctly recognised.

Now, if you then try and use that controller on a JPN machine, it no longer detects the JPN machine. You have to put the USB battery charger cable in and connect back to the JPN machine in order to get it to sync.

Weird.

I refuse to look at the manual anyway, because I had to chop through it to get through the appallingly "secure" blister pack, which then stabbed me with shards of razor sharp plastic, soaking the manual in gore.

Anti-theft. People used to always open the cardboard Dreamast and N64 boxes and take the controllers, leaving the empty box behind. The original PS2 controller packaging was also plastic/cardboard, and people would slip the controller out. Both the N64 and PS2 controller packages were upgraded about four or five years ago to stop this growing trend.

Don't get me started on the blister packaging. I worked on the one for like an hour or two, as the people I was playing Halo with at the time can attest to due to hearing my screaming and gnashing of teeth. The resulting scrap was formed of insanity. I complained to my girlfriend who then opened the other two controllers I later got in literally 5-10 seconds each. I tried to duplicate her feat with the packaging on the Microsoft point cards and well that didn't work out too well.

I've posted this before, but:

For blister packs in general, use a pair of kitchen shears. They're built to cut through bone, and they slice through heat welded plastic like butter.
