Anyone here celebrate Kwanza?

I don’t know one person who celebrates it. Anyone here celebrate it? Know of anyone who does?

I’d love to get actual numbers on how many people actually celebrate Kwanza. My guess is it’s less than 10,000 people. I would imagine there are a shit ton more Americans who celebrate Diwali but it doesn’t get mentioned in the same breath as Christmas or Hanukkah like Kwanza does.

Please let me know if I’m way off base in my above estimate.

Growing up, I didn't even know what the hell Kwanzaa was and it was pushed a lot in the 90's. Then I stopped hearing about it. I don't know anyone who celebrated it. I'll be honest this is the first time I read about Kwanzaa in years.

The fact that Ron Karenga helped murder Black Panther militants and tortured people makes me say, fuck Kwanzaa.

Not trying to be edgelordy here, but I thought this is just a meme for a long time.

Also, tell people you are not into "Jesus Christmas" but more into the traditional pagan Midwinter solstice aspect of it, and people look at you like you are Himmler himself.

True story. I've met Karenga. He was the head of the African American Studies department at my college. He seemed nice enough around campus. But every time I saw him all I could think about was him beating women with electrical cables.

Fake holiday

I saw a short video of Kamala Harris saying that her family always celebrated Kwanzaa and that it was such a special time for her. I thought Kwanzaaa was something her Indian mother introduced the family too.

Turns out Kwanzaa is a relatively recently made-up holiday with faux-african words and made-up customs and rituals that fools people into thinking its an ancient African tradition.

Feel like Kwanza is a LatinX type deal where it’s more a white allies defining POC culture type deal. But I’m a white guy. Any black people celebrate this at home? Genuinely curious.

It’s just so bizarre and pandering to me. It feels like woke racism tbh. Y’all remember Ebonics? When they invented a “new language“ for urban black people who were actually speaking English the whole time? Feels like that. Maybe I am wrong.

fwiw Kwanzaa was invented in 1966 by a black nationalist who went to prison for torturing women:

In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment. One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

A May 14, 1971, article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the women:

Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis' mouth and placed against Miss Davis' face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said. They also were hit on the heads with toasters.

he was also working WITH the LAPD (and then-governor Ronald Reagan!) to fight against rival black nationalists The Black Panthers:

According to Louis Tackwood, a former informant with the Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal Conspiracies Section and author of The Glass House Tapes, Ronald Karenga was knowingly provided financial, arms, and other support by LAPD, with Tackwood as liaison, for US operations against the Black Panthers. Karenga enjoyed a level of trust among figures in government, including LAPD Chief Thomas Reddin and California Governor Ronald Reagan.

also the guy is still alive. would be hilarious if he spoke out about Kamala appropriating his culture. though if his culture is working with Cali police state and torturing black people, i guess they share those things in common.

lol yeah there was a serious push in the 90s to "legitimize" ebonics.

They slapped a name on the complete inability to speak properly and then tried to make it seem official and teach it in schools to pretend that talking like a moron was planned all along.

In other words: the racism of lowered expectations.

Its a fake holiday.

I like that they stole the menorah from Jews and threw it in there.

Its the equivalent if David Duke invented some white holiday called Redneckers day and said that everyone has to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and wear wife beaters and trucker hats. Made up a bunch of principals like self determination of white people, unity of white people, community economies for white people.

I know what it is, and I know it was invented by a professor or something in the 70s, but I never met a person that celebrated it.

I remember The Proud Family celebrated it the one time

I don’t understand how someone invents a holiday to compete with Christmas and then proceeds to make it worse than Christmas in every way.

The same dumb bitch who has photos of her celebrating Christmas as a kid. She’s a filthy fucking liar. Kwanzaa is a made up holiday. It’s not real and no one celebrates it.
