Apple and Beats announce Studio 3 Wireless. W1 chip and 'Pure ANC'

Noise cancellation isn’t new to the Studio line, but Beats claims to have reengineered its entire approach to tuning out distractions as you listen. Beats now calls it Pure Adaptive Noise Canceling (Pure ANC). The Studio 3 Wireless headphones constantly sample your surroundings and algorithmically adjust the strength of noise cancellation to better match that; it won’t be nearly as cranked up in a quiet coffee shop than on an airplane. The system also compensates for leakage due to hair, glasses, or other factors. It takes around five seconds to adjust when you switch from one noise environment to another.

Inside is where all the major upgrades are. The Studio 3 Wireless include Apple’s W1 technology to make pairing with nearby iPhones, iPads, and Macs effortless and immediate. When connected to a W1-supported Apple product, the headphones should reach wireless battery life of 22 hours with noise cancellation on — or up to 40 hours in audio-only “low power” mode. Beats says that audio quality doesn’t change or degrade with noise cancelling disabled. (You double tap the power button to toggle noise-canceling on and off.) That 22-hour figure is slightly better than Bose’s QC35 and Sony’s MDR-1000X headphones. The Studio 3 Wireless headphones also feature Class 1 Bluetooth for more reliable and longer-range connectivity. And when the battery runs low, the company claims you can get 3 more hours of listening time from a 10-minute charge.

I'd be curious to try these. I had a pair of the wired Studio 2s for a while. There were a couple of major problems with them:

1) The hinge for one of the earpieces was flimsy shit that broke twice.
2) The noise canceling created a constant hum - unnoticeable in noisy environments but pretty audible in a quiet room.
3) The high end was a bit shrill for my taste.

It sounds like these address at least #2, both by allowing you to turn off noise canceling and by tuning the effect of the noise canceling based on the noise around you (using microphones). I hope they've taken the time to improve the sound and build quality as well - the Solo2s and 3s sounded noticeably better than the old Studios.

Finally someone dethrones Bose for nose canceling headphones?

It'd certainly be nice for them to have some competition. I ended up getting some Bose in-ear phones because there was no comparison at the price point. (You can get middling noise cancellation for significantly less, but I've not tried anything that came close to them in absolute noise cancellation.)

What about the pedigree of Beats headphones makes you think it would be them?

The fact that the Studio 2 are actually decent headphones?

I do wish they added the ability to use the headphones without battery if you plug in the headphone cable though.

Man, is this going to be a part of their Back to School deal? When I bought my Macbook Pro recently, I got a pair of free Beats Solo 3 Wireless headphones. Honestly, these Studio headphones would be the only ones I'd want. The Solo ones are annoying as they sit on the ears.

Right now I have the Solo 2's will they be coming out with a Solo 4's since the Solo 3's have been out since last year Ive been waiting to upgrade

I have the Studio Wireless 2's.

Will be curious to see if it's a marked improvement in the noise cancelling to justify the upgrade. I doubt it will be worth the price to upgrade.

Unreal, and I got the MDR-1000X last month...

?

I got them last year and they are amazing. The ANC is amazing, it blocks out so much noise of the surroundings and the sound quality is excellent, better than Bose's QC35. And the headphones looks great to boot. And it also has tons of glowing reviews.

Nothing in that article suggests the sound quality is better than the 1000x or even the QC35.

Nope, the back to school deal is set, ends this month. These don’t even ship until October

That's essentially in the QC35 price range too.

Seem to be a direct competitor.
Also same price as Sony's new WH-1000XM2. I'll be interested in reading reviews and comparisons between the two and the QC35.

The W1 chip is a huge plus in my book, but I've not been a fan of Beats and they need to prove their ANC is as good as the QC35 or 1000X. Also, no passive headphone mode using a cable is a minus.

You can use these with a cable, though I'm not sure if they can be used "passively" (ie, without using the battery). The previous Studios couldn't, but you couldn't turn the noise canceling off on those - since you can turn ANC off with these, maybe they can be used passively?

I'm going on a previous poster saying it's not possible, just noticed there's no confirmation either way. We'll see when more info come out.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
lord this would be good
They cannot do that, because current AirPods design doesn’t provide an isolating seal with your ears. They’d have to make them with the silicon insert IEM design for noise cancellation to work. Which I really hope they do in some kind of airpod pro model, because airpods sound quality is crippled by the current non-iem design.
