Gundam GQuuuuuuuuX announced. Collaboration between Studio Khara and Sunrise. Hideaki Anno is writing.

So does Episode 2 cover the entirety of the 0079 content from the movie? If so, it's disappointing....I was led to believe there was more to it, and it feels like a waste of a genuinely interesting story angle.

I also dislike the mech designs and the art style, and nothing that happened in the first episode really grabbed me. I'll probably give it one or two more, but after G-Witch I'm not confident in Sunrise's ability to make a compelling Gundam series.

yeah ep2 is missing the entire sequence of the second battle in Solomon. It's weird why it got omitted because it reveals very important context on Char motivation as well as showing moments leading up to the Zenknova incident which caused Char's disappearance.

Well it only took 7 episodes, but the story is finally going somewhere. I feel like I have the same overall problem with this series as I had with G-Witch: an interesting premise and setting being wasted on vapid protagonists who are only loosely connected with any of the events taking place which are actually compelling. I keep wanting to see more of the plot involving the Zeon and Federation factions maneuvering against each other, yet it keeps getting pushed to the side in favor of having a couple of teenage idiots crushing on a boy who barely acknowledges their existence.

Yeah it's very mid so far. There is a very interesting twist in the movie/first episodes and it's just being wasted

Sunrise must have heard me complaining about how there wasn't enough Zeon-focused content, because episode 8 is entirely Zeon-focused content. And guess what? It's the best episode of the series so far. Machu being absent also helped, which brings up another similarity to G-Witch: the best episodes were the ones where the protagonist was on screen either very little or not at all.

Well well well, look who's back. Image from episode 11, alphacide

Last few episodes have been pretty good, now that this what-if story is more focused on exploring the actual what-ifs. Got a good chuckle out of Gihren finally showing up only to get Kycilia'd one minute later.

Just one more episodes to go, and I still don't know what's the point of the whole thing. It just feels like showing some OG Gundam fan service in what if universe with very weak story of its own.
It's pretty cool that it's showing the alternate universe, but lacks focus?
On top of that, Gundams look so overly complicated that I wouldn't know the difference between the 3 Gundams if the colors were the same.
I actually liked other refined MS designs like Zaku and Gyan, but the main Gundams look just plain complicated mess.

Machu and Nyan's relationship - they barely spoke to each other for the first few eps and now they are BFF foerver turned to enemies etc, which I don't get either....
And not sure if the last episode, within less than 30 min of running time will be able to tell the story well. None of the side characters had time for any meaningful character development too.

It tries to go in every direction and ends up going nowhere. They crammed too many storylines into too little time. Seeing Char and the RX-78-2 again was fun, but beyond that, it felt like pure fan service, like you said

I haven't watched past episode 1 yet, wasn't getting a great vibe from the characters or the animation.

The episodes that were from the movie 'before the incident' were alright. Then it switched to the story of the main characters, went really nowhere and now it's getting good only because of 0078 fan service for the last episodes. You didn't miss much

So far I liked G-Witch more than this one, personally speaking, but I will let them finish the show before writing any more thoughts.

I thought the movie set up quite a potentially interesting story, and while I wouldn't say this series doesn't have its charms, it does just seem to be purely a quite vapid exercise in reinventing Gundam so that it appeals to younger audiences.

I guess anime has moved on from more serious representations of real world issues which hurts Gundam a lot, as that was really the core of all the series, even the dumber ones like G.

If you haven't seen mobile suit gundam 0079, this show honestly comes off as pretty shitty. Despite its style suggesting it's aimed at a younger audience, it really isn't.

It's a VERY weird show

I don't know but art style and horny teenage girl story are all obviously attempting to bring in that older teenage audience that loves Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Revengers, Dandadan etc. Nonsensical stories and cryptic lore aren't really a major turn off for that audience as long as the characters are appealing. This isn't a series designed for the 40 year olds that love the more serious themes of 0079, Zeta, ZZ and CCA even if it references those anime all the time. The horrors of war and shit like that doesn't sell to kids anymore.

Oh, I'm out in Japan and the main theme by Yonezu is massive too.

I didn't know until a couple days ago that the series was only planned for one cour, but it certainly does provide some context as to why everything feels so insanely rushed. I don't mind fanservice and nostalgia when it adds something valuable to the story that is being told, but there just wasn't enough time here to do much of anything worthwhile with so many characters. Gihren, Gaia, Ortega, Gates, and Deux? All killed within an episode of being introduced. Bask, Cameron and Mosk? Basically cameos, disappearing from the story after a scene or two. Lalah? Only around for one episode. It feels like they should have either done away with Machu and Nyaan's part in the story altogether, or done away with the whole what-if gimmick that necessitated bringing in all of the familiar faces. Trying to do both within such a limited time ultimately led to all parts of the story being underdeveloped and unsatisfying.

It's all valid points but I have to keep explaining everything to my son since he hasn't seen the original mobile suit Gundam 0079 yet. Like if it was their reasoning behind this they messed it up seriously.

As far as horrors of war not selling to kids my son must be out of the norm since his favorite show now is IBO. He loves having discussions about this stuff, we get great discussions about the show and he genuily feels attached and is really concerned about what these kids go through. I guess he's very mature about it even at his age, the other day he told me Orga was going too far and it would end up crushing everyone and what they've successfully built so far. The little bugger figured it out on his own without me telling about it.

If their intention was to bring in a younger, new audience into Gundam (which people say in regards to every new Gundam series...) then I don't understand why they are going about it they way they are. Why a "what if" on the original Gundam series, with constant fanservice and references to the old Gundams, in a 1 cour series?
In the past when they wanted to bring Gundam into a new age for a new audience, we got Gundam Seed. And while I am aware not everyone loves it, it did a relatively good job of capturing what "Gundam" was, and was very successful. Quuux, I just don't really understand who it is for.
I would also say, Gundam has been growing for a number of years now, even without this show. And the Gundam Seed movie was one of the best performing things they've ever put out. I don't really think they need a series like Quuux to capture a new audience to begin with.

That's short for a Gundam anime...

Short can be very good. Everyone loves 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket. 0083 is gorgeous in that way only bubble economy era productions could be. And Thunderbolt (season 1 anyway) is also a beautiful production with a clear vision and great action.

GQuacks has not stood on the same stage as those greats. It splits its attention between an underdeveloped main cast and Unicorn-esque politicking, while wasting a ton of time in the first half on watered down arena battles and fan service to the original show, which is incidentally more interesting than whatever's going on here. I've been watching this show with a friend each week and he repeatedly asks me, "Who is this show for? You had to have watched the old Gundam to know so much of what's going on, but it's also not for old heads like us." Haven't had an answer for him.

Maybe. But the characters aren't even good. After reading your post, I tried the RedLetterMedia challenge of describing the main cast without referring to their physical appearance or role in the plot and came up almost empty (except for Shuji who I actually came up empty for - who the fuck is Shuji?). It's very clearly betting on aesthetic though going by that colorful ED, but there's nothing under the hood. Machu and Nyan are no Chisato and Takina* with colorful personalities and a deep friendship. Not that the show's shooting for a deep friendship angle, but you'd never guess it wasn't going by that ED.

*Guys, I know I talk about Lycoris Recoil a lot but this time the comparison is warranted, I swear.

Probably because they want to keep selling models and toys of the RX-78-2, Char's Red Zaku, GMs and Rick Doms until the end of time and they can only keep doing that if they reintroduce those to a new audience periodically.

Yep. Challia Bull is the only interesting character in a series built around having tons of characters.

No they don't have to, RG rx78-2 v 2.0 is selling like pancakes since its release

A somewhat enjoyable show. Too short and a mostly shallow re-interpretation of Tomino's characters IMO and the new ones were not so interesting. But it had some cool visuals and sound editing and I always like some New-type weirdness.

I do feel like Tomino achieved all that he wanted with these characters through both the animes and his novels, so attempts by other writers to use his characters to fuel and hype up their own content feels lame and misses the point that he was always trying to make about how war and the use of these big robots desensitizes the people involved. In fact his message is more relevant than ever but instead of that we just get fan-service and 'member berries.

This is the second Gundam series in a row that I feel like wasted my time

At least this one had OG Gundam fanservice I guess

We could have had Mobile Suit Moon Gundam or Char's deleted affair animated....one can dream

Emphatic thumbs down from me.

The final episode was pretty funny. After literally saying she didn't even know why she was there after carrying out an obvious black ops mission, Nyan heelturns in less than 30 seconds to Machu for F R I E N D S H I P and then is unceremoniously swatted down less than 4 minutes later. She speedran the typical Gundam irrational rage arc too.

My friend pointed out that Machu, after her spiel about true Newtypes not needing being defended to Shuji, had in fact defended Lalah Prime from Shuji. Also, 'people die when they're killed' and 'Newtypes are ultimately people just like anybody else' - The bridge crew really had nothing to do at the end, huh, but I'm not even sure the writing was that cynical. I think it was just shit.

Hearing Toru Furuya and Shuichi Ikeda, however briefly, was neat (although Shuichi's age was really showing in those couple lines). I also liked Lalah Prime's scream of horror when Char got skewered. The battle before was a little awkward though. It was supposed to (obviously) be an alternate retelling of the battle in which Lalah dies in the OG show, but Char and Lalah are the only characters whose voices we hear this time, even though Amuro and Sayla are very active speakers in the original show.

On the overall aesthetic, one thought I had is that it's fitting the OG characters like Char resemble a Unicorn-esque, classic UC aesthetic, while all of Khara's original characters look completely different because they're all products of Lalah Prime's fever dream (kinda like how the classic RX-78-2 looks out of place because it's the only thing that's real). The idea's not consistent though - Challia Bull still looks like a Khara character and not an OG Gundam one. In any event, this thought came to me when Shuji Rita Repulsa'd the OG Gundam - That because this entire realm isn't real that he can warp its rules to fit his designs, but I think canonically this universe is supposed to be 'real' even if it's induced by Newtype powers through magic. In which case the gigantification is kinda dumb.

My thought is that this series didn't have enough time although ironically the entire first half of the show is wasted on dumb clan battles. My friend and I also talked about there's just so much tossing around of nonsense terms (i.e. alphacide, Endymion) without context clues for the audience, and I remembered how that happened in Evangelion too, but that show at least had something under the hood otherwise. GDucks has nothing.

Gundam community won't admit this was subpar for a few months, but they will eventually. Some of the worst designs combined with 12 episodes of extremely rushed space opera.

If you want to save money and only do 12 or 24 episodes fine, but please for the love of fucking god write something you can fit in that limited number.

We used to have classic shorter shows like 08th MS team and War in the pocket. Write smaller scale grounded stories that dont need a 100 characters. That way you can at least give time to the ones you do have to develop, its not rocket science.

An episode and a half was flash backs, the main protagonist hardly had any screen time.

I knew this shit was garbage from the first 3 episode movie compilation. Gundam fans love consuming content than complaining about it later.

Last episode done. GQuuuuuuX is ultimately a series that is far more concerned with pleasing an audience than it is with telling a story, and therefore it doesn't succeed in doing either. So that's 3 straight mehs from Sunrise on the Gundam front, but on the bright side 🤦‍♂️, Hathaway Pt 2 is apparently coming in 2026. Also the Thunderbolt manga is wrapping up, so we'll probably get more of that in anime form at some point.

Ending was as disappointing as the rest of the series. At least we got a few interesting gunpla kits out of this...

Man, I was not expecting this series to be so beginner unfriendly. It's pretty much mandatory to watch 0079 and Char's counterattack beforehand to get the most enjoyment out of gquuux. If you are new to the franchise, I can understand why you think it's bad. There's a lot of references to UC lore and the show kinda expects the audience to already know them.

For me, the biggest issue is the pacing. Too much time was spent on the clan battles when they could focus more on building the friendship between Machu and Nyan as well as provide more backstory to the Zeon infighting. The romance with Shuji was unnecessary as well. And where the fuck is Garma? Pretty boy pretty much got ignored lol.

Although not outright stated, it's heavily implied that when Amuro disappeared after causing Axis shock at the end of CCA, he (or parts of his soul) ended up as part of GQuuux, which was built with materials "from the other side" (likely psycho frame). That's why you hear his voice when GQuuux "speaks".

Overall, I think this series is decent as it's sort of a love letter to UC fans. At the very least it didn't crash and burn like Witches From Mercury and IBO did.

It would have benefited from a bit more development and build up but overall I liked it as someone who has watched the original Gundam.

As an anime, it's kind of a incoherent mess and frustrating at times, but on the flip side, it's been a major success at generating buzz for Gundam (at least in Japan). Perhaps more people will get into the OG stuff too.

It's like Endgame which has little to no value unless you've seen most or all of the prior movies and can "understand the references".
