Weird that we're finally about to see what this is (or isn't) all about. Hurry up and release it, Apple!
...Because mostly, I want iOS 8.2 and 10.10.3.
I'm going to be really curious to see what features they highlight in iOS 9 for all of this. That's when we'll probably see things start to get interesting.
I'm also wondering what we might see launch beside the iPad Pro/12" MBA. The rumored stylus, an updated low power bluetooth 4.0 keyboard, and a new AirPort Extreme/Express are a few thoughts that come to mind.
...Because mostly, I want iOS 8.2 and 10.10.3.

It's worse than when people called iPod Touch an iTouch. At least the i was somewhere in the name. I guess it's a habit to some people with Apple?

iOS 9's supposed to be getting a big stability focus. I expect a lot of feature concentration in WatchOS 2.0, though (we already know that that's where actual native apps will start happening).
We don't know much about OS X 10.11 but supposedly Mark Gurman's coming out with a report on that sometime soon. iOS and OS X both need some stability improvements but I think they can achieve that without slowing down too much on feature improvements (I'd like to see some UI/UX improvements in both, but surely they won't add as many new APIs as iOS 8/Yosemite added for a really really long time).
I wouldn't be surprised to see iOS 9 grant users a fuller version of iCloud Drive and/or filesystem access, and I kind of expect big Apple Maps improvements before long too. Mail.app really ought to get some improvements to catch it up to Google Inbox/Dropbox's Mailbox app or to Microsoft's new Outlook mobile app. The Music app is clearly going to be getting a significant revamp in iOS 9.
It'd be nice to see significant iPad-exclusive UI improvements but I don't expect it.
As for OS X, Siri and Control Center are probably going to happen (Siri's been in development for the Mac for years and Control Center almost made it into Yosemite). Hopefully we'll get a Photos framework and a general iTunes unbundling too. Most of that stuff would require very little from a new-APIs point of view and therefore wouldn't present much of a stability challenge for third parties (though hopefully UXKit for OS X happens to make things easier for devs).

I expect the basic telephony internals, battery, and basic SoC elements contained in the S1 to be upgradable at Apple Stores for like $200-300. Probably to replace the display or get more/better sensors you'll need to replace the actual watch.

Habit, maybe. Just a shortening. I do wonder if they preferred calling it iWatch and just didn't get the name (doubtful, I suppose, given that they usually throw tons of money around). I bet they would've wanted iTV.
Personally I prefer Apple Watch anyway. It gela better with their range. "I" devices run iOS. Other non-"proper" iOS devices can get the Apple branding, such as Apple TV and Apple Watch. (Yes I know Apple TV runs a flavour of iOS).

I don't understand why people think this should be treated so differently from how people who like to upgrade computers and iPhones every year with trades and such do it. People are coming up with this speculative, complex repair and upgrade idea that has no real need to exist with how current tech upgrading goes, and has no major logic or Apple precedent to suggest the possibility.

totally agreed. I think it has to do with the freak outs over the gold watch pricing. But, as has been said, those items are for people with so much money that buying another gold watch in 3 or 4 years isnt a hardship.

I think it's also freakouts from people who've never spent more than $100-200 on a watch. For them (and I'm included in that group), $350 and above seems completely insane for a watch. I'm sure we'll hear from that group even more after the March 9 event.
yeah, I see that. But as someone who has recently (past 2 years) started spending four figures on watches - and seeing what product and service that gets me and what the expectations are when spending that amount - I dont assume Apple will do anything special for upgrades.
Whether you compare it to the current watch industry or to apples current products, i dont see a compelling enough case to figure that theyll suddenly make the watch their most upgradeable product.
people have highlighted the modular nature of the S1 chip but I wouldnt be surprised if its stuck in with so much glue that getting it out is impossible.

As for the technology side, I only partly agree, although the battery life concerns are valid the rest of the technology is very much at that level of development which Apple tends to enter the fray.

Selling out those initial 5 million units would already be a relative success - if it's true that 6.8 million smartwatches were sold in TOTAL last year.

Apple better up their battery life game.
LG are releasing a new bersion of their
G Watch R with a 700mah battery, replacing the 410mah battery that could already last some people 2 days.
Apple watch imo will face the problems that iphones faced in that releasing one product a year means you will literally always be behind in developments.
Ios may have the best smartwatch the day that apple watch releases (not so sure bout that) but after that there areare365 days of technologicaal advancement they will have no answer for. If the Apple watch 1s misses a trick at launch, itll slip back further

But they aren't selling to the android market. They really just need to be better than the pebble to control the market they are after.

If battery life is going to be such a important battleground in smart watches then the Pebble wins out on that front. I'm not convinced an Android Wear manufacturer with a slightly better battery than the Apple Watch has any tangible advantage. They certainly won't be able to match Apple in marketing or availability.
I'm gonna say Friday.

I have really small wrists so I should go with the smaller one but I want the larger screen size.
We still don't have any concrete info on the PPI differential for these two models yet, do we?

ONLY timekeeping. literally only that?
Maybe a little... there are watches that communicate with radio signals for accurate time display. Or just a decent quality quartz watch that will be accurate for years on end before needing battery replacement. not expensive at all.

That's more than time keeping. I want this primarily for notifications. That's why I'm not willing to pay too much above the $350 base and why I am also still considering a Pebble which, as far as I know, handles notifications from iOS without much issue.
I like the look of the Apple Watch a lot more though and that is why I am willing to pay more.

I only want the watch for the time keeping part. Plus notifications, fitness tracking, walking directions and eventually third party apps.
Keep in mind that most of the news we've heard is speculative and is coming from the press' rumour mill. Reserve judgement for the presentation on the 9th.
Im going to bet that there won't be preorders at all. They need the lineups and fervor for 5 million units. They want bodies in front of Apple stores.

isn't that a pretty popular color combination for watches?
I just bought an LG G watch R as it was about £150 on the Amazon warehouse deals. Assuming it works the same as the moto 360 it is quite nice for notifications but still plenty of space for improvement. Eg I'd like to be able to customise the vibration so I could tell the difference between an incoming text or email etc. or for navigation let me know whether to turn left or right (one buzz or two)

I'm curious to try out an apple watch and hear more impressions about how it works day to day after the initial honeymoon is over. I'm sure it'll do some things better than android wear, which will hopefully feed back into better android wear support too.
