Apple announces Apple Watch

my dilemma also. I think the 42 will look too big, but i'd like to try them both on.

I have really small wrists so I should go with the smaller one but I want the larger screen size.

I have small wrists and I think the moto 360 is borderline OK in size, and that is 46mm diameter. The large apple watch is 42mm tall and quite a bit narrower, so I think that should be fine. Apple stores will definitely have them on display to try out though

With my business, having a watch that stops me having to dig my phone out would be a huge plus, but I gotta have a stretchy band. Gimme a stretchy band.

Red straps? Not really.

i guess so...

I wonder who will be the first to make a third party wriststrap with integrated external battery+magsafe patch.

I hope there is more then the apple watch at the conference, would be kind of lackluster having 3 conferences straight mentioning the same device

There's already one making noise
The Reserve Strap
The only strap that charges the Apple Watch while you wear it.

Pre-order now: $250

Probably still cheaper that all the iWatch Edition straps :P

Don't get your hopes up just yet, afaik Apple doesn't allow third parties to utilize magsafe on the Macbooks and it might be the same for iWatch

Three? Isn't this upcoming event going to be just the 2nd?

It was mentioned at the iPad/Yosemite event (they demoed Continuity)

A website that has some previews of what apps could look like on the Watch:

http://watchaware.com/watch-apps

I'm pretty much an Apple guy. But after seeing this I'm still not feeling it at all. Maybe it's because I've never worn a watch but I just find this device to be so redundant. Maybe I'm just totally missing that killer feature. I've also started to shift away from Apple for most of my content needs.

Im sure this will look and feel nice but I really want to see a piece of killer tech from them and I don't think this is it. I think there is a strong chance this could become a major did or that the market for his will just not be as huge as Apple expects.

That second pic is great. Just my opinion, but I think it looks too clunky, lacks refinement and class. I will wait for gen 2.

Is there really a killer app for smart watches? What do these things do that can't be trivialized by "I can do that if I take my phone out of my pocket"?

Some people don't want to take their phones out of their pockets!

But really, it's for simpler and quicker interactions. A wearable is the quickest way to allow such interactions to take place, and a "watch" is a pretty obvious form factor to be complemented with such functionality. You don't have to take your phone out, unlock it, interact with it, lock it, put it back inside your pocket. Take the Apple Watch, per example. Let's say I received a notification for a text. If it's unimportant, I can just ignore it and remove the notification from my phone. If it's important and needs to be replied, I can use a quick reply from the wrist, use dictation, or if it's something a bit more elaborate, I can take the phone out and have it ready to compose the message by the time I unlock it (at least that's how it's supposed to work with Handoff functionality). It's quite cool, if you think about it. I'm excited for those little things: iTunes control, information glances, silent notifications (seriously, the watch "tapping" your wrist thing is ingenious)...

Is that all it serves as though? What can it do that simply isn't possible in other ways with the connected phone? If we use Kinect and Wii for example, I'd say the software that just replaced button commands with motion commands were a letdown. The software that was only feasible with the tools, like Dance Central, were the best arguments for them. So what is the Aplle Watch's "Dance Central"?

Down the road more stuff will appear, as developers mess around with it and new technology becomes available, but those things I mentioned plus functionality for fitness and the walking directions thing they've shown in september (which is also quite cool) is probably everything. It's not meant to replace the phone, and all in all it's just a miniature phone in terms of raw functionality, really, but it's meant to make certain kinds of interactions, once annoying due to the effort they took, simpler. It doesn't need to do more, I think, but YMMV.

It's kind of weird to think having your entire social/business/school life and the Internet in your pocket ready to be accessed is annoying because of effort. It makes it sound like one of those paid programming ads where opening a carton of milk is basically impossible.

The WatchKit stuff could prove to be promising, and I really think devs are going to need to embrace it to make the Apple Watch a success in terms of what is a success for Apple.

It's mostly the fitness and health tracking

I've had my 360 for a few weeks now, and I only really use it for changing albums while driving and at my desk job. It works a lot better than my car's voice control and getting my phone out of my pocket while sitting is such a hassle.

I don't think it's amazing or a necessity, but there is potential. Apps like @handtuner do come in handy when I don't want to pull out my guitar tuner and deal with my jumbled up cables.

Well, if you put it that way, sure it feels redundant. But we get used to this stuff way too fast, and when we stop to think about it we realize we can't rewind it. I can't unlock my phone without Touch ID now, it feels so natural that I'd hate to go back to the old way.

And about the app scene, it surely will be what determines the future of the Apple Watch. The App Store made what the iPhone is today, and so it'll be for its companion.

Some of the best use I have had from my Moto 360 is when I have been in the car. Replying to texts and WhatsApp's by voice, using it as a turn by turn sat nav, with the phone yelling instructions from my coat pocket whilst the watch gives me the display.

I've even seen a pic on Reddit where one user straight up straps the watch to his car steering wheel, for easier visibility.

But a phone car mount is pretty cheap and let's you see the full screen at windshield level.

I want to see some apps that can't be trivialized in that way.

I don't know if you're going to find any :lol
It's all about convenience, as another poster said.

Will it even be possible to buy any watch with any bracelet? Or will Apple force their taste on us yet again? I.e. will you be able to buy the watch body only without bracelet?

Guess we will know soon, but any rumours?
Guessing by the product page, it will come in 18+10+6 different combinations (18 for the Watch, 10 for the Watch Sport and 6 for the Watch Edition).

https://www.apple.com/watch/apple-watch/

Scroll down, it says "View all 18 models in the collection." Then you see something similar in the other collections.

Brings it down to a total of 34 SKUs.

Apple would be the last company to sell a not ready to use SKU. Buy it with a bracelet, plenty of combos to choose from, change the bracelet later if you want.

Hmm, does that mean, for example, that space black stainless steel watch is only available with metallic link bracelet? Damn. Metallic one completely useless for my wife. :p

It does look that way. Just like the Space Gray Aluminum only seems to come with the Black Sport Band. Apple gonna Apple, for sure. But you can swap the bracelets afterwards. Maybe even get a pretty penny for your unused original one.

Interestingly, in the Watch Edition, cases and bracelets seem to be branded to match each other. But not in the Watch or Watch Sport, so it's no big deal.
