I am mostly a console gamer but i have a few games i play on my PC, Unrealtournament, Soldier of Fortune. I am thinking of buying a G5, question is if you are playing online using an Apple Computer, can you play against peeps using PCs and are there a lot of games for apple. :D

Thanks for contributing to The Dumbing Down of America.

"and are there a lot of games for apple."

*no*

Apple gets a handful of the big releases, but other than that and some little doo dads that are Mac only you don't get much. Mac's are the Gamecube of computers.

Given the sorry state of PC gaming, is there anything worth even playing outside of the "big" releases?

xsr: Well in the past 2 months, Silent Hunter III (if you're heavy into sims), Psychonauts, Empire Earth II, and the upcoming Trackmania: Sunrise? You barely hear about most PC game releases. So yes, there *is* stuff to get about outside the "big" releases.

Too bad they're not nearly as good as the ones available for the PC.

Aside from Trackmania, I have to agree.

Trust this forum to mock the OP instead of responding with something useful.

Before I went away to the university, I looked at a few different computers back in 1999, and ultimately, because I wanted to sample what PC gaming had to offer, I opted for a P3 450 mhz PC, which was near top-of-the-line at the time. I wound up only playing Unreal Tournament and Homeworld, and continued to do 95% of my gaming on consoles. I regret that decision now, as I still have that same PC...I would much rather have had a nice Mac laptop instead. I believe both of those games wound up on Macs eventually, too.

If you are only casually interested in PC gaming, I think there's nothing wrong at all with a Mac right now. Recently, you have got both KOTORs and World of Warcraft on the Apple OS. What more do you really need?

Haha...there should be a "search GAF" window in all public browsers.

I just got my mac, loving it.

Sorryaboutresden: haha...cool avatar

Mr.Lemming: by definition, adding jumping and stickywalls and anything = not monkey ball anymore...the point was simplicity. Too bad I wasn't really a fan of monkey ball to begin with. Goo ball looks kinda cool, though.

Try lookig here - http://www.apple.com/games/. I know you can play some online games against PC users like Halo, but I'm not sure if you can do it w/all games. I've got a G4 dual 500 and I must say it's still a very powerful computer, especially for recording music (which is why I bought it), but if you're buying it just for games, you're better off with a PC.

As a more or less life-long Apple user: Get a Mac, but be aware that you're going to get screwed on a lot of games.

It's not that there aren't any quality titles on Mac OS, but it just doesn't compare to the Windows market.

That said, I still play a hell of a lot of Halo on my G5. As well as Call Of Duty/Warcraft/Marathon. And I'd say that 97% of all games that are ported to Mac and have multiplayer can play with PCs as well. There might be a bit of a delay whenever the game's netcode is updated, so you'll be Mac only until the Mac patch is released, but it's not that bad.

Also, don't underestimate the power of shareware/independent titles. I know, all you PC folk are gonna laugh at this, but there are some genuinely brilliant shareware games that many people ignore. Gish, Kill Monty, Mutant Monsters, Escape Velocity: Nova, and so on.

Tell me an easier way to describe a game where your player character is encased in a ball, and the primary means of locomotion is by tilting the playing field without also saying Marble Madness in 3d and I'll agree :)

But they're easier to use and more sexy!

Ahem.

If gaming is your biggest use for a computer, just get a PC. And this is coming from someone who's only used Apple computers since '86.

It's hit and miss. MacMAME and Genesis emulation are pretty weak, but NES cycle-complete emulation was on the Mac at almost the same time as the PC, and it still runs better on the Mac.

Do you want a gaming computer? Do not, under any circumstances, buy a Mac.

Are you worried about not having enough games? A Mac will be fine. About 3/4 of the big-name releases make it to the Mac, and there are plenty of little development houses (Ambrosia Software!) are making awesome little Mac-only games.

Inside Mac Games is great for info, as is Emulation.net. Emulation.net keeps track of all sorts of Mac emulators (game system and otherwise).
