Apple discontinues IPod Nano and Shuffle

Not too surprising. Anyone wanting something just for music and not apps (aka not the touch) probably gets one of the other 10 million DAPs around.

Yeah, was bound to happen eventually. Always seemed like dead space in retail.

I kind of liked the form factor of the Nano. And I remember everyone having a Shuffle as their budget MP3 player a decade ago.

*sigh* the iPod touch is too big and why would I want it when I have an iphone. The nano was great for stuff like walking or riding my motorcycle or using at work before the store opens. Hell, my favorite one was the sixth generation that was the size of a stamp because it was tiny like the shuffle but had the advantage of being able to select songs and playlists.

It was amazing to watch the iPod define an era, and then fade into the background and disappear. Nothing like than since the Walkman.

Shuffle is great for working out, but as it's completely incompatible with Apple Music, i can't use it. If they had a way where i could sync offline songs from Apple Music onto it, i'd absolutely do that. Oh well.

Makes sense. I have to imagine the market for these is tiny and shrinking, and with Apple Music, Apple has a vested interested in pushing people towards streaming over personal music collections.

Bought a shuffle two years ago just for my walks/runs and only used it a few times. Now just use my Apple Watch to do the same thing without having to bring my phone.

Still sad to see them all go. Wish they would do a new iPod classic or Nano. Lots of SSD storage but with a click wheel.

I would love to see a Shuffle that could sync playlists from Apple Music.

Woulda been killer.

The shuffle was the only Apple product I still liked. It's basically perfect for running or at the gym. So small and light, it can just hang off your shirt. It has forever battery life also. No one else has made anything quality that's comparable. Some people recommend the Sansa Clip, but it's too heavy and flops all over the place. RIP Shuffle.

I don't think so.

Buying from iTunes locks you into Apple hardware, which is their real goal.

Last time I used it, the app sucked, but Apple Music is available on Windows and Android.

iTunes is on Windows and the files are DRM-free and play just fine on Android.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't killed off the whole brand already. I guess there was just enough demand for them to keep making them.

I honestly don't know why you'd want an iPod Nano these days, both it and the Shuffle were overpriced, but at least the Shuffle was small in size.

At least we still have the touch. I've actually been contemplating buying a touch for some time now.

Apple is gearing up for when it kills the iTunes store next year and switches to Apple Music completely

I hope this doesn't happen. There is so much music that is only digitally available on iTunes.

Just bought a Nano on Sunday, guess I got in right under the wire, lol. I just way prefer it to using my phone, which is far too bulky and doesn't fit comfortably in my pocket as I'm on the way to work, on the subway, etc.

The most recent iPod nano was such an awesome little device. I use mine on my walks and when I am exercising.
I mostly use my Walkman WM1A now for all my other music needs. Don't have any need for an iPod Touch. Was kind of hoping they would add a storage upgrade to the iPod nano. Guess not!

God this was my favorite iPod of all time

God tell me about it. The 6th gen was perfection.

The only thing that could be better was if it had dead simple streaming or download capability. I'd love a wee little thing that would be easy to have a podcast or streaming app on.

Incidentally what's your bike? I wish I still had one

Another great thing about the 6th gen nano is that it had radio as well, which I don't know why they didn't put on other ipod models.

I adored my Nano years ago. Just got too inconvenient to update tracks/pods/etc... without a wifi option. But I much preferred it to using my iPhone for workouts as I do now.

Yes, also has functionality that helps in the gym

I keep telling myself I should really get a watch, if only for the gym.

My 32GB Creative Zen Vision M is ten and a half years old and I've only recently retired it.

Considering you can get a reasonably inexpensive Android device with a Micro SD slot allowing you to potentially have more storage than an iPod Touch at a fraction of the cost what's the appeal of an iPod anymore? I mean aside from "status" (though if that's a factor you might be more looking at an iPhone) or being in the Mac/iTunes ecosystem if you just want something to play music and maybe watch video on? Is audio processing in iPod Touch noticeably superior to the masses these days? Of course that is if you're not already just using your phone (regardless of brand/model) to begin with.

I don't want a different one. I have several iTunes from when Apple was proprietary and even if not it does mean having to get used to a different system of putting music on and having to do that one separately when all my other devices are Apple. Oh yeah, and hoping it works well on a Mac.

Sure, you can tell me that people like me just aren't a big enough market to justify them anymore but don't tell me that it's not a problem for me and that there is an equally good alternative.

I'll probably just buy used iPods when I can still find them (I still prefer a used sixth gen over the new ones even).

So do I ;). It was a ninja 500 but I crashed it years ago and just haven't been able to afford another one.

Guess I'll snag some shuffles while still I can. I mostly use mine for running and it's served me just fine since I don't stream my music.

Someone recommended Apple Watch but I sure can't afford that lol. Seems rather pricey.

I mean, the DAP market is mostly high end dedicated music players with expandable storage these days. Even that is a rather niche market (growing though). Almost nobody buys iPods anymore.

However I would totally buy a new classic if it supported more file types.

Oh wow I had an EX500. I think they put Ninja on it a year after my model. What a coincidence. They're great little starter bikes

And if it matters to you, they might have their upgrade system for DRM songs. You could get the plus versions for a discount. They're higher bitrate too and many have remastered to even out the compression.

Shuffle was awesome. Easy to use at the time, and all you did was clip it onto a belt loop.

I was just ranting to my wife about this last weekend. If these were around when I was a kid, shit would of legit changed my fucking life.

bitchen technology maaaaannnnnnnnn.........
.this is the drunk thread right?

Daily user of an iPod shuffle at the gym. While it might only have 2 gigs, its plenty enough for using it for an hour and a half and not repeating songs. Rather use it for its minimalist size with a clip than having to carry my phone in my pocket.
