Apple discontinues IPod Nano and Shuffle

Still use my Nano 6th gen when I go to the gym. I love it.

Personally I don't think the iPhone is too big for a run.

I can understand not wanting to go on a sweaty jog with a $1,000 electronic though.

I feel the exact opposite. Its so frustrating. Everything is geared for streaming.

Streaming has given me access to endless audio content with the touch of a button.
No ripping of CD's required, no connecting to a PC, no syncing required, I don't have to curate the content to fit on the limited space on my device, etcetera.

There's no better time for portable audio than right now. If you don't have a garbage 3G/4G plan, that is.

I have an LTE plan but I run out of high speed data two weeks into a month and at work, where I do most of my listening, I get one bar on a great day. Plus during commutes, the towers are jammed and unrealiable along i95.Steaming only works when I'm home, the last place I need to stream music.Plus their is a monthly fee and no matter what service you use, there are huge gaps, especially with indie music.

Guess my biggest problem is how terrible Apple music is. If I could force it to only look at music on my phone and not try to stream. There is a downloaded music section, but it still tries to stream sometimes even if the song is on the device.

*sigh* the iPod touch is too big and why would I want it when I have an iphone. The nano was great for stuff like walking or riding my motorcycle or using at work before the store opens. Hell, my favorite one was the sixth generation that was the size of a stamp because it was tiny like the shuffle but had the advantage of being able to select songs and playlists.
High five. Same here, on all accounts. (Except, I don't have an iPhone, but I lug my iPad around with me everywhere I go.)

Still rocking my red nano with a wristband. It's pretty damn great. Wish they had opted to update it a bit (smaller bezels, waterproof, Bluetooth, new connector) instead of outright axing the entire lineup. What a goddamn waste.

I shall continue to (ab)use my nano until the day its non-replaceable battery implodes.

Also, obligatory: Steve would have never allowed this etc pp rabble rabble whine whine.

That's pretty understandable.

With services like Spotify, Google Play Music and Apple Music, those devices where stuck in time.

I actually came across my wife's old "fat" iPod Nano a few weeks back. Probably gonna drop it on eBay this weekend.

Man, remember the 1st gen iPod Nano?

I spent all my savings on that bad boy and it was like owning some artifact from the freaking future. So damn small, slick and yet still so amazing to use.
I still own it and last I checked it still works like a charm.

I was working for CompUSA at the time and the company gave all its employees one as a Christmas Gift the year it was released.

I ended up selling mine to my Aunt so she could give it to her daughter as a Christmas Gift--I had a 30GB iPod at the time and the Nano's paltry storage wasn't nearly enough for my music.

The Apple Watch is the replacement for the Nano and Shuffle. It works great for fitness and you don't have to worry about extra cases or arm bands. You can sweat all over it with no issue.

I don't have strong feelings about the Nano or Shuffle (though the third gen "fat" Nano was my favorite form factor), but I still kinda would have liked an elongated screen and a HDD updated Classic, like the Zune screen.

Phones can go up to 128GB, but it's still costly (and no iPhone has microSD), streaming is ok but I've collected music for years and years and not everything can be found anymore, plus data costs.

Also fat Nano was best Nano, the long skinny one with the curved back scroll wheel after it felt uncomfortable in comparison.

edit;

All these pictures of older iPods bring back how magical each launch felt, like Christmas Eve. That feeling is much weakened in me of late, not sure how much is just growing up and how much is Apple :/

Well, I just went ahead and bought a 16GB 7th generation Nano to replace my (still working) 10 year 3rd generation Nano. I don't want to use a phone to listen to podcasts, and from my research it seems that other non-iPod MP3 players suck for podcasts and audiobooks. Hopefully between the new Nano and my old one, I'll be set for a few more years before needing something new.

FUUUUUUUUCK.

I got the final generation of nano I guess. I love it. I guess I'm going to have to track down used models online when mine breaks.

This is like how Verizon finally stopped carrying feature phones instore. I'm going to be buying old models of everything :(

I refuse to believe you have to get an Internet-capable device to just survive now.

Damn, I was hoping of an iPod Nano coming out with some sort of Apple Music app on it and podcasts. I wouldn't need a phone anymore after that.

Except they aren't. At least not for me. Gaps in catalogs, eat data, require good reception, crappy sound quality. I've tried them. They just aren't there yet.

My particular favourite is spending time cultivating a playlist which gets turned into a mockery a month later because Spotify got into a spat with some label and now half the songs are missing.

Damn so sad they've killed these off. My first iPod was the shuffle back in the day. I sold a load of gaming stuff to afford that little thing and it only had 512mb of space. Think it was £70?

I still have a silver shuffle now that is perfect for running. Agree about 2GB For £50 is too much now but this form factor is the best version. I had a 3rd gen one which was like a small silver clip. Was lovely to look at but any sweat in the headphones and they stopped working.

The nanos were gorgeous though:

On topic, I remember the first print ad for the nano. It was the first time I ever wanted (and later bought) an Apple product.

Blew my mind.
Yup same, I never had an Apple product before that, but I was really hyped for the Nano. I was fresh out of high school and pretty broke, but saved up for one near launch and adored it.

4th and 5th gen Nanos are one of my all time favorite devices. They're so gorgeous. I wish smartphones had that much style.

My first Apple product ever was the 3rd generation iPod, upgraded it a couple of times. The first nano I bought was the first gen one but it was too small for my library and scratched so easily. (but it was pretty damn sexy)

I may try to jump on getting a 7th gen nano and down the line I'll get one of those modded iPod Classics with the 256GB of storage for old time's sake.

Probably just the nostalgia but I do miss the iPod for its ability to be a great music player. Spent so much time listening to music between classes and at the gym + on the commutes.

Of course nowadays I just use Apple Music and stream most of the time.

The 5G iPod Nano is the best designed music player ever. My wife still uses hers.

End of an era, my first Apple product was the 3rd gen iPod. The one with the touch scroll wheel and buttons. This was before iTunes on Windows so i downloaded MusicMatch and installed a firewire card into my shitty PC. That's how badly I wanted one of these things.

Been an Apple fan since, now all of my tech gadgets are Apple products.

Call me crazy but I have a feeling they’d know better than any of us whether or not there’s a viable market for these things.
Of course people aren't going to buy old hardware. The nano needed an update, not a discontinuation. They literally only did this because people are buying old ipods instead of watches. It's obvious.

iPod is more of a household name than Apple Watch. They fucked up by not calling the Apple Watch an iPod.

I just love the entire Nano series. I have one of each since Gen 2. Gen 2 was first ever iPod and I loved that thing to death. Got the hot pink one. It still works too, won't ever throw it out.
I remember when I was in school and everyone had the first gen. I was so dang jealous.
The Sony Walkman A17 reminds me a bit of the Nano. Doesn't have a click wheel but it's small and compact and supports a lot of file formats. Just recently upgraded to the WM1A.
