Apple discontinues IPod Nano and Shuffle

$50 for a 2GB Shuffle in 2017 is a joke.

I just want to say that, in 2008 I got my 2nd gen iPod Shuffle, and 9 years later, the bastard still holds its battery for hours. So, I don't know what kind of black wizardry used Apple, but that little thing is amazing.
I actually got another one but 4th gen, in case the former kicks the bucket or something.

tl;dr Best $50 ever spent.

Apple fucked up the second they replaced the hardware after the 5th Generation iPod Classics. There are so many other companies that sell better audio players (most of which support FLAC and hi-res files).

Man, remember the 1st gen iPod Nano?

I spent all my savings on that bad boy and it was like owning some artifact from the freaking future. So damn small, slick and yet still so amazing to use.
I still own it and last I checked it still works like a charm.

Apple is gearing up for when it kills the iTunes store next year and switches to Apple Music completely

Not even. They’re gonna keep the movie store around for a while with the AppleTV being a thing (and rumors of a 4K one this year). If you’re gonna keep a storefront up for movies and TV shows leaving it up for music is trivial

Just realized that ipod defined an Era, then Apple did it again with the iPhone. Christ.

That was the point. Apple knew that someone was eventually going to come around and kill the iPod, so they decided to kill it themselves first (by making an even more popular product)

I loved mine and held onto it until Apple did the recall about the possible exploding battery. Got it swapped out for a 6th gen, which I still use and love though missed having physical buttons on it.

Might try to see if I can still pick up a 7th gen tomorrow at the Apple Store...

Yes, really fucked up by making billions of dollars in profits from its other products.

The iPod. End of an era. I was still in high school when it became the new big thing, it's amazing how it defined the music player category.

Same here. I had a 2gb nano, which was in the recall. The best part is that the circle wheel had stopped working unless I put it in the refrigerator. So I shipped it back and got an 8gb 6th gen nano for a replacement.

Mine still worked perfectly but since it was better to be safe than sorry, I opted to get it replaced.

I only wish it was a color rather than the graphite one I received, but since it was a free replacement, couldn't really complain about it.

I miss physical buttons, playing musics for 20 hours without a recharge, itunes that worked (most of the time), personally curated play lists with ratings and playcounts tracked, not having to be online or a phone service with data to play music correctly or at all. Nothing has come close to the mid 2000s experience. The current alternatives all seem a step down from that.

I was on the fence of buying another ipod as the experience on iphone has been terrible lately.

It has never been easier or more convenient to listen to music than now.

Love the 7th gen: 16GB, Bluetooth, movies, it's perfect for the gym.

Sad. Hoping for an 8th gen model, maybe with Wifi so I can stream music and podcast.

No. There is little overhead in running that business and some songs don't even have streaming, sometimes when a new album is released. No need to throw out an income source for no reason.

Different from the iPods, as they are physical products taking shelf space, require logistics, production, etc.

Makes sense, they're pretty pointless products now. It would be neat to see a new iPod, but they could give it a huge amount of storage, make it pretty small, and just call it an iPod.

Why not push everyone on Apple Music to get a ton more marketshare?

My fifth gen iPod got stolen back in college. Still hurts - such a beautiful device. The clickwheel was a genius idea.

So I'm guessing the only reason the iPod Touch wasn't discontinued as well is because it can access Apple Music.

I wonder if the 2015 model is the last version of the Touch they'll release before silently discontinuing it as well.

The shuffle is still my favorite music player for when I go running. I don't want my phone with me then because that's too heavy and I like to listen to music while jogging through the park.

I had an iPod Classic for seven years before the hard drive died in October 2015, and then I got a iPod Touch for Christmas 2015, and I love the thing to death. I still listen to music/podcasts enough (with my desk job now probably 6-8 hours per day) that I like having a dedicated device. And I still listen to all the mp3s I aquired over the years. This'll probably be my last MP3 player, but I'm gonna make it last.

Good job running the nano all the way into the ground with the trash tiny touch screen models.

I prefer those than the wheel which was easy to keep going past or before the song you wanted (especially on the long ones that had tiny wheels, the square nano before the touch screens actually had a decent wheel). Touch screen was faster to get to what you wanted. And for fast forwarding/rewinding/play/stop without looking that was what the remote on the headset was for.

Damn it, I was hoping for a 8GB iPod shuffle at least. I bought a Sandisk Clip Jam but I liked how the iPod shuffle could turn shuffle on and off using the main power button.

I was just ranting to my wife about this last weekend. If these were around when I was a kid, shit would of legit changed my fucking life.

bitchen technology maaaaannnnnnnnn.........
.this is the drunk thread right?
This was the case for me. I got a 3rd gen Nano for my 11th birthday in 2007, and holy shit it might have been the most important birthday gift I've ever gotten. I still use it as well. This fucking thing is almost 10 years old and still going strong. That's a remarkable piece of tech right there.

Never had a problem with the wheel on my 2G nano. The touch screen is tiny and annoying to use while holding the device with one hand.

I'm sure other people had different experiences.

Random thought, but when I was camping a couple of weeks ago, it reinforced what an utter shit option streaming everything is when you step three feet out of your cell company's data service area.

Even though I've been on board with streaming for awhile, I still use my 6G and 7G Nanos when running or cycling. They're small, they're lightweight.

But also, I still occasionally they're just kind of neat. I kind of miss the era of ultraportable miniature electronics. The GB Micro, the PSP Go, tiny phones, tiny media players. I get why screens are getting bigger and bigger, but I still miss tiny gadgets like the iPod Nano.

I had a 1st gen iPod Nano and a 4th gen iPod Touch. Both were amazing devices.
Kind of surreal how they were at the top a decade ago and now the former is being discontinued. Guess it won't take long until they do the same to the Touch variant.

I still use my 2007 Nano daily for podcasts. Should I buy a new Nano now before they're hard to find as a backup in case my Nano breaks, or is there another small MP3 player that does podcasts well? I'll admit that iTunes isn't great, but it's good for podcasts. I just plug the Nano into my computer, and it will automatically download new podcasts and sync everything.

I use my nano as my go to music device. I don't want to use my phone. It's small, it fits everywhere... RIP nano

I have a 6th gen Nano that I used for a watch until the Apple Watch came out. Now it hangs out in my bedroom, playing music to lull me and my gf to sleep each day.

And to hell with relying on streaming. When everything goes to shit in a few years, I'll still have tunes (assuming I'll have access to electricity.)

Still use my Nano 5G weekly at the gym. So much more convenient and smaller than smartphones. And the quality is amazing. Almost looks like day one. It's my first and only Apple device, but it was one of the best purchases I ever did.
