If they increased the resolution, do you think they'd make it a multiple of the current ipad resolution, or try and bring it in line with the iphone? (So 960×640 times 4, making it 1920 x 1280)

2X multiple of current ipad resolution. apple has already started making assets in that form.

Please no. It's alot better than 2GSMiniNanoTouch
I'm talking about ending all branding following the product name like it is now on their iPods and macs. To differentiate they just use things like mid 2011 or 4th generation model.

I wouldn't buy the next release iPad if it only had retina, and Siri. I would want something much more sunstantial to be updated, something like a redesign, if that.

iPad 2 is great as it is

A retina screen as big as an iPad would be pretty damn substantial.

I really want an ipad for board games, magazine/pdf reading, and plant/animal identification apps. I also want to be able to keep a good amount of video and audio on it as well.

The Ipad 1 64GB is on sale for $399 through Apple. Is there really a big difference between the 1st and 2nd gen ipads if I don't care about having a camera or 3d gaming?

High res display and a quadcore a15 ;D

Since things are moving to a new manufacturing node next year, I wonder if they can fit a quad gpu as well... that'd give the new iPad more punch than the psvita lol.

Won't that powerful of a processor put a hit on battery life? How much power do you really need in a tablet?

If there is a retina display in the iPad3, then it will need some pretty beefy specs to get it to run well at all.

No.

Because it's easier to say "iOS5 runs on the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S" than trying to explain how OS X Lion runs on certain Macs with Core2Duo's in most cases but not the very early yada yada yada. Understand what I mean? Eventually an iOS update will come out that may run on the iPad 3, 4 and 5 but not the 1 and 2. How would you explain it if there were no numbers? What other designation would you give them? "The iPad with the cameras"? "The first iPhone that had Siri"?

The ipad2 is significantly lighter. If you're going to be reading on the thing, it makes a difference. I also wouldn't buy an original ipad under any circumstances. In saving a little cash, you're locking yourself to device that is going to get more and more outdated each year. It's like buying an iphone 3g after the 3gs is out. The ipad2's hardware is robust enough that it'll be supported for years to come. The meager memory and power of the original is already locking it out of things. In two years it probably won't even get ios updates.

If you do any web browsing, you'll really feel the difference in the two devices.

They really only call it the "iPad 2" on the website.

Any way to get the split keyboard to stay on the bottom of the screen? Dumb question, but I'm batmanning.

You're upside down? I thought that was the only orientation it wouldn't flip to.

On the iPhone, you can double tap Home and scroll all the way to the left to get a "Portrait Orientation Lock" (looks like a grey circling arrow icon), but I dunno if that would fix your problem anyway.

The iPad, unlike the iPhone, flips to pretty much every orientation on most apps. Upside down is fine. I'd like the iPhone to be like that. Also, you can lock its orientation through the multitasking tray (as per your description) or even set the physical mute switch to do it.

@White Man: I don't think you can. The split keyboard hovers a notch above the bottom. You can slide it up at will, but if you bring it down too much it will turn into the normal keyboard.

retina is exactly what I've been holding out on until I buy an iPad... I've got a Touchpad to hold me over until then.

"Hey man, which tablet do you have?"

"The iPad."

"Which one?"

"The second version."

"From 2011?"

The numbering system is better, IMO.

Sure. Just pull the keyboard apart with your thumbs and it will split right there at the bottom. If you use the button in the bottom right to split the keyboard, it will move to the center (this is in portrait)

Saw that Apple has a new dark gray smart cover. Are they good buys? My griffin case is leaving weird material on the screen and might opt for a smart cover instead.

I still say it's the best cover you can buy. It's worked beautifully for me since launch. If you're worried about the back, get a cheap compatible back plate on Amazon.

Honestly, I'm not that worried about the back. It was the front I was worried about mostly. This piece of Griffin was leaving rubbery bits and sand-like grain on the screen. I'm sending that back to Amazon, pronto.

OK, I'll spring for a smart cover then. Thanks.

Mine leaves panel marks on my screen.

My iPad 2's home button is wonky, it seems it registers only 1 out of 4 times.

Is there anything I should try before taking it back to the apple store?

The same thing happens with my iPhone 4. Apple is very lenient with offering replacements for this issue, so just take it back and they'll give you a new one.

The smart covers are a gimmick. If you want actual screen protection, do not buy. They flop around pretty easily and the sides if the ipad can get chipped. I use a case with a keyboard built in myself.

As an iPad 1 owner, I agree. Before the iOS5 update I'd have said if you don't mind the weight and have played around with a few apps and the browser to get a sense of the speed, feel free to save some money. But since iOS5, the iPad 1 no longer feels snappy and capable. Such a shame. I had no interest in upgrading to an iPad 3 (yes, even with a retina display) because the iPad 1 did pretty much everything I needed it to as slickly and as fast as I needed it done. iOS5 added some features, but it feels like it added a thin layer of friction to every process. All that wonderful responsiveness is gone. On balance, I might even revert to the previous firmware if I could, if for no other reason than to see if the boost in speed really does outweigh the new features.

Don't buy an iPad 1. At least, don't buy one if you ever plan on updating the software or enjoying the latest apps. Even if your needs are fairly basic, my advice would be to wait for the iPad 3 at this point.

got my iPad replaced today for a chunk of dust under the center of the screen. I felt like an ass for such a small thing but it was right in the damn center. new one seems great so far

What the hell, my friend just showed me a way to bypass the numberlock on the iPad by holding the powerbutton and then pressing cancel. How could Apple let that happen?

Maybe it isn't coming to the iPad at all. I mean, the iPad never even got VoiceControl.

Perhaps they want to keep the personal assistant feature exclusive to the one truly personal, with everything always built into it (3G, phone, SMS textes, GPS, etc), iOS device. The iPhone.

whaaaaaat? Yeah right. Siri is gonna come to all Apple products.

In the long run, maybe. But I can't see it happen soon.

Even if, by chance, it gets announced for the iPad 3, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an exclusive of the 3G versions.

I mean, it's a server dependent core feature... it doesn't make much sense on non- always connected devices. And it wouldn't fly well with the consumers, IMO.

We'll see.

Good point.

I plugged in my IPad to my Win Vista computer and iTunes prompted me to update to iOS 5 to which I gladly obliged. However I got some sort of error (1166 iirc) and now my iPad screen just has an Apple logo and progress bar on it. Won't lock, home button does nothing, and plugging it into my computer doesn't do anything. Any advice on how to fix this?

Yeah man, I had this very same issue. If I understand it correctly it's due to an issue with the install. Apple's advice is to uininstall iTunes from the PC and delete everything to do with it and then reinstall (you might want to back up your backups though).

However, that didn't work for me. In the end I had to plug it into my other netbook with a fresh itunes install and update it that way. The upshot of which was that it wiped the iPad clean. If you have a backup on your main machine you can get all your apps and saves back though.

Of course, this may be terrible advice and somebody else may have an easy fix. But after losing a day to researching it I don't think there's much you can do, especially if your PC is no longer recognising the device now.

Safari is a server dependent core feature :p

Also a good point, haha.

But that's sort of treated as on the app level, rather than the OS-feature level, so I can understand why Apple would handle the two differently. Siri is *completely* abstracted from the user - I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of users assume that it's their iPhone 4S processing their voice and not a server farm in North Carolina. Thus, it might be confusing to a lot of people to have it only work when you're connected to a network. That's the sort of confusion Apple really wants to avoid.

In the end, though, Siri's pretty clearly a big deal and I expect Apple to roll it out to the iPad and Apple TV and even eventually (like, next-major-OSX-revision eventually) to the Mac.

I hope they add more voices to Siri when it inevitably gets rolled out to everything else. It would be cool to give each device it's own character.

I want a male Siri voice!

They'll all have the same personality if and when that happens, though, so I doubt the whole 'character' thing will work.

Last I checked Voice Over voices clock in around 500MB. I can't really think of an Apple way of letting the User select what VoiceOver voice they want.

I just mean each with a unique voice. Not a different personality.

I'm waiting for the inevitable lawsuit against Apple when Siri tells someone something funny or off-color or just the wrong directions...something stupid...and they end up getting killed or injured or something either due to hurt feelings or general stupidity.

Not sure why I just thought about this, but it seems like it's guaranteed to happen sooner or later.

"I asked Siri if I looked fat in this shirt, and she wouldn't give me a straight answer about it. I asked her for hours and she kept repeating herself. Not even Siri loves me. I'm jumping off a bridge...goodbye cruel world. I'm not even pretty enough for a stupid machine."

*kills herself*
*parents sue Apple*

...something like that!
