seems like a great solution for overall protection WITH the smart cover. i plan to slip my ipad 2 in this before i go to bed or if i'm laying it down for an extended period of time (for back protection)

and it's reversible.

I like that while it doesn't work for their workflow, they understand it is working for a lot of people, and keep an open mind.

These days my iPad sits docked at my desk doing nothing more than charging and receiving updates. Yet every time I'm at an airport I look around and see tons of passengers with their iPads. It's the new ThinkPad. I see it everywhere and people seem to be happy with it. In fact, last quarter 17% of Apple's total revenue came from iPad sales.

Exclusive apps, which essentially means apple apps.

The "App Store First" cycle for people creating apps is coming to and end. We're beginning to see simultenous releases, as well as releases on new markets first (Angry Birds Rio).

Hell, as these browsers become more and more capable, you're going to see the move to webapps even further. Simplification for developers, and a wider audience.
 
I wouldn't say that Apple apps are the only exclusive apps. there's a TON of iOS exclusive apps that aren't on Android. the number will go down in the coming years but it's still way in Apple's favor now.

webapps are great for some things but not great for replicating that rich, tactile feel found in the best iOS app interfaces (see flipbook, garageband, reeder, omnifocus, The Elements, etc).
 
The thing about "important apps" is the list changes every day. The right app, launched at the right time, has a tendency to take on a life of its own (Tiny Wings, Instagram, etc).

And from what we've seen over the past two years, these types of apps are debuting exclusively on iOS.

The Angry Birds thing kind of illustrates that. Google and Microsoft love to showcase it but Apple doesn't even mention it anymore. There's newer and better stuff to talk about on iOS.

The limitations for webapps for iOS lie solely in Apple's hands. Whether they opt to allow further integration or not will decide whether developers stick with a market that hasn't seen as much growth as others.

The bottleneck used to be bandwidth delivery, with LTE coming in that's not gonna be an issue anymore.

I bought one of these, and have a smart cover as well. Should be great for when the iPad needs to be in a bag while travelling.

Even with LTE its going to take a while for those 1.5 GB apps and watch your bandwidth cap.

no, the limitation of webapps is in matching the speed and feel of native apps using web programming technologies. Safari is on the leading edge of supporting all the fancy animations and HTML5 technologies - webapps still don't feel as good to use as native apps.


when a webapp can give me an experience that feels on par with Reeder or Flipbook, then it'll be equal (assuming, of course, that native app development stands still in the interim).

I know you're big on webapps but they're not the best solution for everything.

The iphone games will work on the ipad, just stretched out and some games and app are universal for the iphone and ipad. Gameloft and EA games are mostly not universal so if u want the ipad version u have to buy it again.

if the dev made a separate "HD" iPad version, then yes.

if it's a universal app (custom UI for both iphone and ipad), then no.

universal apps get my money more often.

There is not even a reason to freak out anymore, as Apple replaced they rogue "Buy" button with an "Install/Update" one

...what makes people think they still have to buy the game?
 
The Project magazine for the ipad is quite good. I just wish there was a ibookstore for magazines so i can have them organized rather than have separate magazine apps.


Anyone know how many ipad 2 were sold up until now and how many xooms were sold?

Not yet, but Xoom sales LTD probably equal the first few hours of iPad 2 availability if it is lucky. I am not meaning that in a troll fashion either.

Right, like I said whether Apple opens up access to the hardware will decide just how much people will be willing to use them on their devices.

Webapps aren't great for everything I agree, but most apps that people are using are apps that rely on connectivity to other places. Facebook is a great example. What do people do for facebook on the ipad, use the webapp that is the website. Facebook doesn't have to worry about yet another branch of code if that audience can get on through the website.

Another example for facebook, you can access HW such as cameras for uploading to the site, all through the webapp. Facebook just needs to do it once, to get people on any device (with a proper browser) to use the functionality instead of dicking around with an ios, android, bb, wp7 app.

Dominoes has a great webapp for ordering food. I was amazed at how well it works. It may not have all the pizaz that a native app has, but if my goal is to get a pie, I always use my phone to order, even if I have a computer near by.

Angry Birds Rio will be released first on the Apple App Store, on March 22. The Amazon release is about a month later.

I agree with your examples. another one near and dear to our hearts: the Neogaf webapp from Chris Kohler (not the Wired writer).

it wouldn't make sense for that content to be a native app. he can update it whenever he wants, serve viewers on different platforms and not have to dick around with multiple programming languages and Apple's review policy.

Perhaps our prediction of the next five years is different. I think webapps and native apps will still exist alongside each other - each one focused on different types of experiences.

How'd I forget about Gaf webapp, lol. Which I guess is the ultimate goal for content delivery afterall.

I don't see native apps withering away entirely, but I think they'll be a very small focus.

I have a ton of EA board games that I play all the time so that sucks. I'm not going to be doing any double dipping.

Ok, I bought Plants VS Zombies then when I click to download the bigger iPad version it's asking me to buy and not to update. It's just bullshit since I've paid for the app/game already I'm not double dipping.

yeah... EA and popcap are two devs that create separate apps for the ipad and iphone. sorry.

technically, you can run the iphone version you already bought upscaled on the ipad screen.

in the future, look for apps with a plus sign next to the buy button. they're universal and have UIs tailored for each device at no extra cost.

You bought the iPhone version, and you can play that on your iPad as well. But you don't just get the iPad version for free.

Do you expect Nintendo to give you the Wii version of any DSi game you buy?

But there are companies that make their apps universal and it's pay-once-play-on-anything. They're awesome.

Eh I think Facebook is kind of a bad example. How would a webapp push notifications to the phone (without SMS which on some carriers you stupidly have to pay for unless you're on a plan)? How about persistent always-on chat? Picture and status update integration with contact list?

A lot of the games you listed were released at different times on iPhone/iPad, and most have unique layouts for the iPad. I do not know how you can expect those to be universal.

Plants VS Zombies HD is the cheapest it has ever been right now too.

People find weird things to get angry at :/

Gmail on the chrome browser has a notification system, that as long as your signed and the browser running in the back, you can see pop ups in the corner of your scree for incoming messages.

Contacts would be one of those things that would stay native, along with chat. Although you have chat inside of gmail as well, again you could tie into the notification system.

I bought the iPhone version and it works just fine on my iPod. The iPad is just a large iPod Touch. A better analogy you could have used to say would be buying a DSi game then having to rebuy the same game for the DSi XL.

I'll be looking for universal apps but it's just shitty for the double dipping.

There are apps where enough work was put in to justify a second purchase, and some where there isn't.

Anyway, your example of the DSIXL works the same. Load up the iPod version and it will run.

It'll just depend on the nature of the app. There's always going to be a big performance hit just cause you're dealing with interpreting HTML/JS vs native code, so any really complex stuff pushing hardware will be native. Something relatively simple like plain content* can be done, and eventually more complex stuff as the hardware gets better, but ultimately you have to deal with the hit...and complexity of coding something complex in HTML/JS.

*Such as porn, and anything else that likely wouldn't be able to get into a regular app store.

I believe you can actually do some of that with a website already, the rest depends on Apple adding some stuff. The hardest part is just getting performance of complex web pages up so more complex stuff becomes feasible on mobile devices.

Oh, I'm sure I'll find some good iPad exclusive stuff soon but as of now, after 6 hours of playing with it non stop.... and being a first gen iPod Touch owner, it's just a bigger iPod right now. Not that I'm complaining. I just streamed 30 Rock over 3G on it and it worked great. I love it, just not too happy about having to double dip. I'll be on the look out for universal apps in the future. I'll play with it all blown out right now. I can't get my Boggle any other way.

Anyway................. looking for the red smart cover today and they are sold out everywhere and going for silly prices on eBay. Even craiglist turns up empty handed for me.

this is probably a shot in the dark but anyone use iphone explorer to copy their battleheart save over to their ipad 2? i wish all devs just placed save games in the Documents folder. :(

That would be nice but I don't think they even need to go that far. They just need to slightly modify the locations apps use to store data so you can delete a game without deleting your save. It can remain local. You could get a prompt, asking you if you want to delete it, like game center achievements, when you delete a game from the device,

But cloud saves over game center would be pretty nice, indeed. But I doubt apple will make that investment.
