@MrDenny,

When your Carbon Fiber skin comes in I hope you do a review! That looks amazing, and for $15 great price. Will wait to hear what you think though first.

I have an Air and an iPad and I use both.

you're a writer. i think the point is that unless you have a professional need to use specialist stuff like final cut or logic or photoshop or, uh, a keyboard on the go, you'll find little use for a laptop when you have a desktop & ipad.

at least, that's how it shook out for me.

In my launch day huff I bought the hdmi dongle. I opened it up used it once and now I don't really think I'm gonna be using it all tha often. Will the apple store take it back or are they gonna fuss over the fact I opened it up and used it?

Also, if I buy music from iTunes on my iPad can those songs be put on my pc as well or would I have to repurchase them on the pc?

So guys, I know this discussion was being had in another thread recently, but what's the current best comic book reader app?
Comic flow, comic zeal are the best

Comic flow is free and simple. Comic zeal is 8 dollars and has more options for sorting series and for zoom options.

The songs will be transfered to your computer the next time you sync (assuming you click transfer purchases when the box pops up).

I've had the multitouch gestures enabled all afternoon and I find myself using the swipe up for app switcher all the time. That's definitely the most useful, but pinch to home screen is nice too.

Um, the battery life hasn't been good so far. Drains fast and charges slow

I agree.

I thought Xcode was free?

All I'm seeing is paid $99/year stuff.
Do you have your Mac OS X Install Disk? I think you can grab it off that.

Install Disk?

Hmm, I have my Snow Leopard and Leopard not sure where I put my Install Disks. I shall look around.

The new Xcode is available on the App Store for 4.99, also.
Yeah I know but I'm cheap and if I can get it for free, whatever.

Stealth edit: It's on the Snow Leopard DVD I have so should work. yee yee

Edit: Guess you can't upgrade from 3-4 for free, so whatever, $5 it is.

perhaps a stupid question, but here goes:
is there an app (or rather, an ipad app and a mac os driver) that allows you to more or less use your ipad as an input tablet (with display), essentially making the ipad an inexpensive (and granted, inaccurate, but i am not worried about this for now) version of a wacom cintiq?

Ideally, it wouldn't be a specified program on the mac - the input should be usable anywhere (photoshop, your favorite image manipulation app, paint, etc..), just like a cintiq works.

With a pen, that might be a very pleasant way to doodle a bit.

edit: i realize there are drawing apps like sketchbook pro, but that's not exactly what i am looking for. I want to control my mac. Maybe a vnc, but then the whole screen gets exported, which is a bit unfortunate (not to add to the problem of lag - i should be sending my input to mac os, not receiving input from it).
This is why I was hoping for Thunderbolt, I wanted the iPad to act as a display and USB control surface, it would've been awesome (...for the few people with Thunderbolt machines). For now, yeah VNC or some screen thing is the only way I can think of. Something like Splashtop (that runs it's own faster server) might work, but I don't know if it has a "pen mode" for drawing. I know iTap VNC does at least.

I really hope someone offers an edge to edge decal that fits the entire back. Don't like that decal ignores the edge so much. Almost makes it a shame that Apple changed the design of the back, since iPad 1 decals looked and fit so good.
I'm debating getting a skin but this is bugging me too. Not so much the sides really, but the amount the speaker comes up at the bottom is a problem.

I know this question has been asked before, but I never really found a definitive answer; perhaps there isnt one to give.  Does anyone know if/when Amazon will be selling the iPad 2?  I prefer to go through them since I have a sizable amount of credit ($500) from returning some purchases in the past.
There isn't an answer until it happens. Last year I think they only had it a short time, and that might've been a third party seller for all I know.

Might get hit for a restocking fee but otherwise they should take it back no problem.

I don't think you need Xcode 4 for the trick, save your money unless you want to do development with Xcode 4.

that's cool.

so just check the british customs site for rules about bringing in items and duties.

UK is GSM so same difference with the 3G.
Yeah I causally just remembered when j was in Canada last I just packed my ps3 in my hand luggage and didn't declare it

Hopefully a little White lady won't get stopped and searched by customs!

Thanks, I'll probably get the 3G version from Canada now that's all confirmed

Well if so, the version of Xcode from the SN disc wouldn't load my iPad in devices.

Works now. Pretty snazzy.

I've used the iPad 2 now for a weekend and it won't replace my laptop at all. I have a desktop, a MacBook Pro and the iPad. The iPad is what I bring with me in bed to putz around with or to use on the couch. But, when I actually want to get something done, do e-mails, etc I'm going to be using my laptop or desktop. The keyboard on the iPad isn't good enough for me to actually type more than a couple of sentences on.

I brought back my 32 GB iPad 2, since my brother guaranteed he could hook a 16 GB w a discount.

Personally, I want to use it as a laptop replacement. I sit on my bed with my laptop in my lap, and it Burrrrns (yes, I know they have coolers, but according to studies, it still doesn't work 100 percent). Also a good living room device.

So Comic Zeal is the defacto comic-viewing app?

But we don't have a consensus on a video-viewing app? Air, VLC, etc.

Could you help me get those gestures?
I have been trying for three days or the like to add these gestures to my iPad.
I think I signed up for the iOS Developer Program at developer.apple.com without paying and recieved a mail. But when I open up xCode (3.2 I think, from the Snow Leopard Install Disc) with my iPad (4.3) connected, it doesn't show up in the Organizer..

What did you do?
The "Organizer" doesn't offer me a list of devices.

Install the iOS 4.3 SDK.

Yeah. I wish it had reverse pinch to back into apps though.

I posted in the other iPad thread by mistake, but a heads up...I noticed a stuck black pixel when I was viewing a white screen. I am going to try to exchange it. make sure you guys check yours as well!

On line at the 5th avenue store. Around the block. Ugh.

EDIT: Fuck that. I just went to work. It's really depressing to see the amount of obvious resellers on line. :-/

give the iPad keyboard some time and you'll get much better at using it. I've written out some long-ass emails and forum posts on the thing the last year. you'd be surprised how capable it is the more you use it (the landscape mode one, of course).

What are the speakers like in comparison to iPad 1
They seem roughly the same to me. Used it to watch Netflix last night while playing some Torchlight on the Xbox, and it was fine.

So I installed the iOS 4.3 SDK on my Mac and have since gotten gestures to work on the iPad, but am I doing something wrong? I have to swipe up with 4 fingers to bring up the multitasking bar?

Have you gone into settings a turned them on?

I think I'll be one of those laptop +iPad users.

I need my laptop on the road for uni and future work such as VMs and what not, unfortunately I use my MBP for more than consumption

The iPad will be GREAT for me right now as I need something to take up my tonnes of .PDFs I read for uni, and it's much better than printing out the PDF or taking a big arse laptop just to read from the screen.

Yup and all gestures works, but I thought I were supposed to bring up the multi-tasking bar by 1 finger up from the bezel instead of swiping up 4 fingers as I do now?

More options like what?

you can change the background color on the sides. you can zoom to the width of the ipad and keep that setting across multiple pages. if you're reading a series of comics, finishing one automatically brings up the comic browser to let you pick the next one.

it's not a huge deal for me, which is a reason i was able to move to comic flow but they may be killer features for others.

I prefer comic flow as it's faster to get comics into the app and it doesn't cause long backup times when changing only a few comics in the database

Can somebody explain in detail how to turn on gestures on the iPad? Do you need a Mac to do it? I use a PC as my main computer, but I can have access to a friend's Mac.

I've bought hardware with me before. Just don't have the packaging or receipt on you - pack it in your luggage if you need to keep it - and in the unlikely event that you're stopped, they can't prove that you didn't take it with you.

But it's fairly likely to not be an issue anyway. Every time I've been through customs with goodies from the States in my bag there hasn't even been anyone manning it :P

What makes you say this?

Magical?

Revolutionary?

Building on the already established ios platform?

I understand the reality distortion field, but seriously what does the iPad offer apart from a larger screen?

Nothing, don't know why you'd even buy one. You should probably look into an Android tablet or wait for HP.

well, in the face of flawless logic like that i'm forced to concede that it must, in fact, be magic causing me to use my ipad for several hours almost every day without fail. why else would i find what is, after all, merely an oversized ipod touch so compelling?

The same thing every other tablet offers.

Why is the common argument that it's a "big iPod touch" a bad thing anyway? The iPhone is one of the best computing devices I've ever owned. I found myself surfing the web on it more than I did my laptop. An iPhone/iPod touch with a bigger screen makes it even more useable (at least when you're able to be stationary for a while). The idea that you and others can't understand why iOS (and Android, for that matter) fans might want a bigger device is baffling to me. The step seems very logical.

Hello,

Like pretty much every platform (consoles, PC, smartphones), iPad it nothing without the people (sometime teams) who publish content for it. Thankfully, many people have chosen to do so, and currently that makes iPad a very worthwhile device to people.

If it wasn't for these content creators, the iPad would very much just the iPhone with a larger screen you say it to be. Some of my favorite, and most used Apps would not work on iPhone / Smartphones / Laptop (or any other devices with a smaller / non touch interface screen).

The device itself it not what is important, it is what people (including Apple themselves) created for it.

The same could be said for any other tablets (esspically in the future when more companies get up to speed).

Even if you do not like then, tablets are a fantastic new way for people to view and create content, so been angry at them is about as been silly as been angry at a TV, Radio or Phone.

Sounds like Comic Flow's what I want to go with as well. Thanks!

Typing this from my iPad. Personally i use my iPad every day for surfing, news apps and some forum responses. If i have to do heavy typing though I break out my net book.

Basically for most passive net surfing and the occasional interactive activity (responding to a forum post for example) the iPad is awesome and infinitely more chill than using my netbook.

It's not a replacement to a pc but it sure as hell compliments it well.

I got mine at the best buy at memorial city. I called the apple store at 2:30 and they said they had a line of 80. My gf jumped in line at the best buy a little after four. They got 70 in and she was 50th or so. I got the last 32gig wifi bc the people in front of us called someone and they didn't want white one and they were in line at the apple store which was out the door of the mall.

@bob page thanks I'll check it out, my problem is everything I have is on logmein.

Cool. I went to the Best Buy a little further out I-10. Got there at 3:15, out by 5:30. I had no idea it would be this hard to find one after the launch.

Can the Ipad play .mkv files by chance?
If not, what is the easiest way to convert video for playback on the unit?

Gracias-

YxPlayer can do the job, but it is, and it seems will always be unreliable. Even after countless updates I am seeing many framerate problems with different files I try.

Airvideo is the best option if you will be watching around your house, as you can stream a huge collection of files to it, and it coverts on-the-fly and plays (after about a 10 second wait). I have 300+ ripped DVDs, 35 Ripped Blu-Ray, and I have only had a problem looking at one of them via Airvideo.
