Apple iPad 2 |OT|

I am interested in getting iCab, but is there any way to sync it's bookmarks with either Xmarks or Safari? Or at least import and replace with Safari's? I can live without home screen bookmarks since I assume iCab won't be able to make them, but I needs my bookmarks.

I highly recommend Photogene, best Photo editor on the iPad, shot RAW on my 60D, used the camera connection kit, used the app to edit/export to the web = profit

Alternatively, does either iCab or Atomic Browser have Xmarks integration or some kind of syncing with bookmarks I already have? Which is the best browser? I like the idea of DropBox integration for downloads. This will be a must.

Since Mobile Safari syncs with desktop Safari, which syncs with Firefox via Xmarks, I would guess "yes."

Guys can you suggest me any good iOS / Generic Apple website? Better if normal and just hold by an hardcore fanboys group...
Thanks

I read TUAW.com which is slightly Apple tilted, minimalmac.com, which is fairly sane, daringfireball.net which is... well, you'll see as soon as you go there, appleinsider.com for the latest goofy-ass rumours, and toucharcade.com for iOS gaming. Plus GAF threads.

iCab:

Posting this on my iPad 2 (my first ever experience on an iPad). Man this thing is smooth, just "feels" so nice to use. Clipboard looks really cool though not sure how much I will use it and wonder if a more standard rss reader may be better?

icab does not have bookmark syncing, no. but importing is really easy in icab as it can automatically import books from any file called "bookmarks.html" in the root folder of dropbox. if you change bookmarks a lot, it won't be enough but if they're stable (as they are for me) then it works OK.

it has dropbox integration for downloads which is quite nice (on tap saving or pictures and a couple taps for larger files)

i think the firefox Home application allows you to sync up firefox bookmarks. but i don[t know if there's an ipad app and i don[t think it offers any other features aside from that syncing.

Yes...I see :-D

By the way thanks for the (other) tips!

I change bookmarks a lot but I use iCab. Let me describe how (in exchange for someone recommending me a simple drawing app like ArtStudio that has dropbox integration).

I send bookmarks to my Safari browser through Mail. This is done with Send to Dropbox, which is a free service. I have a folder action in the Attachments folder in my Dropbox root folder (where Send to Dropbox adds files) and the folder action is an automator/applescript setup that looks for links in a txt file, automatically opens them in Safari, saves them to a special Bookmark folder called "Saved", then exports the bookmarks immediately to my Download folder (which iCab uses). Now, when I am on my network, I can update my bookmarks to the latest set on my desktop. Make sense?

I do it like this so I never have to worry about exporting iCab bookmarks and checking for sync issues with Safari. Anytime I want to add a bookmark, I send it through email, Safari adds it, uploads the bookmark file to Dropbox, and next time I'm on my network I just import from iCab. Simple and automated.

I like 9to5mac.com, it's supposedly run by Apple retailer employees. TUAW is about the same, but it's owned by AOL, and so they might be pushed to do attention grabbing things in the future. DaringFireball is douchey but the guy has sources and developers talk to him (they don't talk to these blogs for some reason).

So final verdict. Atomic or iCab? ICab's $2 while Atomic is $1. Both seem similar. How are they browsing? Do either of them have an open in background feature? For when I open a link in a new tab?

I love icab. And it does have the open tab in background feature.

How about Atomic? The people at MacRumors seem to like it better because the developer listens more closely and visits the forum for ideas.

Also, do either of them have the fast JavaScript speed Safari does? How does this work? Safari in 4.3 has much improved JS. Do the other browsers get this as well?

Though does Atomic have gestures like iCab? I just remembered gestures are a big want... Damn.. who thought it would be so hard to pick a browser?

icab is better, but for three bucks, just get both if you are this indecisive!

-pixelatedipad.com
-uberipad.com

Current one is www.ipadbackdrops.com
Any final thoughts on these?

I was reading today about Evernote vs. Simplenote.

What are the thoughts around here?

I've only tried Evernote so far, and though I love the idea, I think the executions falls a bit flat.
I takes a bit too much to load notes, and sometime I'd only want to write something quickly and I just can't with Evernote.

Plus, I read that Simplenote allows to share notes between users.
I'm thinking about that as a big pro. My gf and me for example could make shared shopping lists and argue no more about what has to be bought and what not. :P

I use simplenote to make quick lists, like grocery lists, errands, reminders etc ... i use evernote for everything else including saving web pages , pdf images , etc ....

Meh.

I love the webapp on the iPhone, miles better. But on the iPad, I prefer to just use the normal site.
On my computer I have the full site customized out the wazoo that when I use it on the iPad, I can't stand it. The WebApp looks and works amazingly on the iPad's big screen and offers easy navigation without having to zoom in to click small links and stuff. Since everything is where it should be. I love it on the iPad.

When in doubt, pick the smallest name that actually explains what you want to do.

But I think your existing domain is the clever one.
My only worry with the existing one is that it's too difficult to remember (hell, I couldn't even remember it a hour after I registered it).

Funnily, I've developed a pretty keen sense of clicking on my ipad - I can click on individual pages without zooming!

Webapp is no doubt fine on iPad, I just prefer the regular site. I do miss some features like insta-scroll to bottom and toggle spoilers (I do have the applet installed).

Anyway, it's funny how something as simple as scrolling on the iPad is fun enough I don't mind having to do it more often. Obviously, ask me again when touch screen tablets are more the norm than a novelty, and I might feel different, but for now, every time I flick my finger up, it feels like the future.

I think this is what Steve meant when he introduced the iPad and said it was the best way to view your email, and the best way to browse the web. I don't think he was referring to feature or ease-of-use or anything like that, but more the greater whole - in that it just kinda 'feels' more intimate and direct.

Your relevant newspaper probably has an app worth downloading.

Zinio is great if you're into certain magazines. It has Edge, which is a fantastic gaming mag, for a reasonable price.

ZINIO IS GREAT FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING. The only thing I don't like is that compared to the standalone, I can't seem to queue downloads.

The Kindle app is essential if you're into eBooks.
I never use it. Not for a year on ipad 1 and I don't see myself using it.

Dropbox is something you need to download on every device you own, right now, including your iPad.
Agreed

ComicZeal for comics.
Agreed

QuickShot for a nice camera app that automatically uploads to Dropbox.
Get photogene + photoshop for edits. Photogene is great. Hipstamatic on iphone works amazing on ipad and pocket booth HD is a lot of fun.

Friendly is probably the best Facebook app, but the touch version of the Facebook website itself works well too, so you could just link that on your home page. But it has a low-res icon. Icky. Oh and the Twitter app is great.
Agreed

The iWork suite is theoretically great but I am yet to really use it (granted, I've had the device for less than a week).
Useless to me, the layout + excel one are too fiddly from what I tried. The text document, you can use a free text editor and then move it to proper word on a pc

AppShopper is a must. Build up your wish list and it will tell you when their prices drop. It is amazing.
Agreed

Looked into PlainText? It syncs with Dropbox and uses...plain text files.

Yay, got my iPad and its syncing now. Is there an easy way to only sync iPad and Universal apps? i don't want me iphone apps on the device.
I think there's a checkbox or preference somewhere to sync iPhone/iPod only apps (I'd guess in the Apps tab), just change that setting.

Why are people so afraid of calling customer support? They'd have told you the same thing and been more responsive.
I'd guess many people are used to useless (or even hostile) customer support, if any support at all. Or they're just used to being able to do everything over the internet and not having to deal with people.

The iCab dev is pretty responsive to emails, and open about the programming stuff on his blog...and the last post would explain why the last update had so many "modules" (basically fancy bookmarklets) included, and perhaps why Atomic got pulled at one point (I vaguely read somewhere it was for the module type stuff they had).

Nothing other than Safari has the new JS engine, although in actual use I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes. It might be a security issue (cause the way Nitro works) and should be able to be worked around whenever WebKit2 comes around, which will hopefully be in iOS 5. The bigger problem I have with third party browsers is some JS limitations they have, but I've only run into that issue a few times (for some stuff on my school site and previews on Wordpress admin).

And I think Atomic has gestures. I don't use them much in iCab cause it's kind of flaky or I suck at them, I guess it's something with the way it interprets them or something. I have a VNC app that uses 3 finger swipe gestures for some stuff and works fine there.

atomic's gestures are great. with tabbed browsing. Swipe two fingers left/right to jump to the next tab and swipe both down to close tab. That's all you really need.

Even on ipad 2, I do NOT use Safari.

Flipbook and Pulse both seem really awesome. I question how much I'll use them, but if I can find a decent mix of content on both I could see them really making my trawl through the Internet for news a lot easier.

I ink I might try the Atomic browser.

Edit: oh awesome, it has a porn mode.

thank you i got some of those... LOVE flipboard :)

Haha, wow. The debate between Atomic and iCab is interesting. They seem similar. What are modules anyway? Like extensions? Are they a lot more limited and I assume you can't just make one of your own? Maybe I should email whichever developer I go with (Or both if I get both) and see if they are able to contact the Xmarks people about integrating into that system. Seems like it'd be an amazing choice.

And I agree about the icon. Though at least Atomic's is a globe... no... it's ugly. Yeah. But I like the checkerboard pattern of iCab's. Either way, whichever one I go with will be getting a prominent spot on my Dock and I will be removing my bookmark icons from my Home Screen for NeoGAF and Xmarks bookmarks list, at least until Apple caves and allows iOS to have "default application" options for certain apps. Or at least the browser.

Do you not notice any speed difference between Safari and iCab or Atomic when browsing normal sites like NeoGAF's WebApp or others?

Edit: I think I'm just going to start with iCab. I love how browsers have to be rated 17+.

Swapped my orange smart cover for a red today. Like the feel of the plastic ones better than the leather, but wanted bolder colors.

Why can't I log into the WebApp on iCab? It keeps taking me to the same login page with no error. It tells me JavaScript is required. But doesn't tell me that it's off or anything.

Change the user agent to Mobile Safari / iPhone.
It's already set to iPad. And it doesn't work either with iPad or iPhone set.

Trying a reboot.

Edit: No. It won't let me log in ANYWHERE.

What gives?

Literally. I can't log into ANY site. Not Google. Not NeoGAF. Not my own forum. Not other forums. Nowhere!

Edit: Ugh. I figured it out. I turned on "Offline mode" because I thought it did something else.

No.

hence my noteshelf recommendation. The base templates for various uses are also really good.

I think penultimate is quite disappointing and once i got into noteshelf, I never looked back

Gonna have to second this. I have no idea why Penultimate is so popular when there are better options like Noteshelf around.

If you just got an iPad and haven't used it much, wait on buying a stylus. I bought one right when I got my original iPad a year ago, and I've used the stylus twice. It was a Pogo, which was highly recommended at the time and a lot like the ones suggested in this thread, but it doesn't work like a pencil, and it's just a pain in the butt to use. I'd recommend just using your finger and getting used to that. Really, the device isn't made for a stylus.
I've actually owned the iPad 1 and iPad 2 since launch it's just that I just got the upad app and with its zoomed in feature it seems really nice for taking notes in class.

Thanks for all the responses everyone

Penultimate was available on the iPad's launch date, was beloved by reviewers in those early days with few alternatives, and has has been frequently featured by Apple in the AppStore since then.

However bad the pogo stylus is, it's still a lot better than using a finger—especially when the pogo stylus is only $12.

I recommend the oStylus or Nomad brush.

The iPad wasn't made for a stylus *shrug* those are the best you can get.

Does The Daily open really slowly for anyone else? It download the latest issue quickly, but it sits on that blue splashscreen for ages when I go to read it later.
