Does anyone have any recommendations for good (cheap, if not free) apps that keep track of your finances? I'd like something for my iPhone/iPad where I can jot down if I owe someone money or vice versa, etc.

I know this isn't the gaming side, but I think everyone can appreciate this - the wonderful, hauntingly beautiful, utterly joyous Machinarium is out on iPad 2 from midnight.

New Zealand iTunes Link. It will cost $5 or £3. It's a must-have.

My wife just emailed me and said she downloaded iSwifter (free app apparently) and was able to watch a livestream from Justin.tv no problem.

I'll be trying that out when I get home. Thanks GAF.

For 30mins but yeah its great

I'm looking for a bag (the old thread hasn't been updated in months). I don't want a notebook sized bag; it should be designed for only an iPad and a few accessories—certainly there should be enough space for the wall charger, camera connection kit, external battery and perhaps the keyboard dock and a book. My only rule of thumb is no velcro.
I'm currently considering the Tom Bihn Ristretto, Booq Boa Push, Manhattan Portage Manhattan Bag, STM Extra Small iPad Shoulder Bag and Crumpler Herbas (S). Any other suggestions** or recommendations?

**Only suggest a Muzetto if you'll willing to mail me one for $50 (including s+h).

i think iCab works in the background... I will try something bow

edit - yeah, it seems to be working. I started a download, clicked the home button, opened up Shazam, and the came back and the downlad was still advancing.

You should get iCab anyway as it is the best browser available anyway :)

Doesnt have to be a browser, I guess, as long as I can provide it links. iTunes handles background downloads just fine (surprise surprise) but atomic cannot.

iCab has been mentioned, Filer is also good. Apple limits all third party apps downloading in the background to 10 minutes activity—except if you jailbreak the device. Even after a jailbreak though, iOS kills apps in the background willy-nilly, except Apple's own apps and I can't claim that you'll find a reliable downloading solution. This is one of those situations where iOS is stuck in the stone ages and is fall behind Android, or even webOS.

So I tried the Justin.tv app last after what cjelly said. He's totally right. Works great and looks fine too.

Thank you so much!

So I'm selling my touchpad to get an ipad 2, but what size does anyone recommend?

I'm looking at wifi only models, and the touchpad profits will put me in the 300/400 dollar range for the 16/32gb ipad 2. I look forward to the shower of apps...

get 32 GB.

I have 16 GB and while it’s just barely enough for me to get by, the extra space would be useful if you start loading it up with comics, magazines, apps, movies and music.

I've gotten the 32GB both generations and have found it to be the sweet spot for me.

My iPad typically runs at half capacity, but when I travel I load it up with movie rentals or TV Series and that's when I start biting into that extra space.

16GBs alone is plenty if you're OK with tightly managing your apps a bit (only keeping ones you truly need, not keeping multiple issues of magazines, deleting all your downloaded porn from your movie player apps...you know, that kind of stuff).

You just don't get any luxury space with the 16GB model.

isn't the justin.tv app still only for IPod/IPhone (ie, will scale terribly on an IPad)? Unless that changed in the last couple days.

The interface is, but video views are not pixel doubled. HQ streams look really nice.

Are there any alternatives to the smart cover? The lines on the screen where the cover does not directly cover the screen are becoming annoying.

In ComicGlass, is there a way to have it organize a set of comics via a folder, so that way it's organized/easier to browse?
Yes, hit the Edit button at top right, then click the new folder icon at bottom right.

You'll create an empty, untitled folder. Tap and hold on the new folder to rename it and/or password lock it.

You can then move comics from your list/bookshelf into the new folder by hitting the Edit button, tapping the comics you want to move (they'll be marked with a red checkmark circle), and then tapping the move button at the bottom. This will take you to a screen where you can select the folder to move them to, and then finally hit the "Move to this Folder" button at the bottom.

It sounds like a lot of steps, but it goes fast once you know the drill.

Alternately, you can create a folder of comics on your Mac/PC, rename the folder to a .pkg extension, and then transfer that pkg file to ComicGlass via iTunes or a file transfer app. It will appear in ComicGlass as a folder upon import.

Is there any way to disable the large fullscreen album art from popping up when choosing new songs in the iPod?

Kind of annoying.

wait for ios5. It doesn't kick you out of list view

(maybe there's a jailbreak solution til then)

Any recommended alarm clock apps for iOS? I have a sick newborn and have to give meds and feed her quite often, so I try to take power naps between the specific times.

Heh, yeah. I have a 16GB iPad 2 upgraded from a 16GB iPad 1, and in my daily life the lack of space doesn't impact me at all, but the few times I've gone on trips where I have no internet and wanted to load up with content it's been a constant battle.

Of course the best solution for consumers would be to put in an SD card reader because they're as thin or thinner than the USB port, cost pennies, and could easily expand the space from 16GB to 64+GB for a tiny amount of money grumble grumble

Yeah, I hope the next ones have hdmi and mini sd card readers at least. They're eliminating the Itunes dependency. Now, just add some more functionality.

I use Alarmed. It's free, and has plenty of customisation options.

I think it cost a buck, but I got Alarm Clock. It's great - used it on a recent business trip where I stayed in several hotels and didn't want to have to worry about a wakeup call.

That's asking a bit much of Apple. After all, they need something to get consumers salivating for the iPad 10.

Really think that if Apple ever did expandable memory it wouldn't be on some new overprice proprietary memory of their own design?

they just won’t bother. build it inside and be done with it. it might suck for those who need the space but Apple isn’t about to lower those margins unless the market forces them to.

I like Nightstand Central because it works well and has an appealing icon.

Regarding small scratches on my iPad 2.

I've had my iPad 2 for, like, two weeks and this weekend I noticed quite a few small scratches on the screen and I have no idea how they could have gotten there.

Granted, to even notice these scratches, I had to have the screen off (I was cleaning it at the time) and hold it at a certain angle. That said, it's very annoying as I've been handling the iPad with care, use the smart cover most of the time it's not on the dock and haven't dropped the iPad itself, nor have I dropped anything on it.

I did let my 5 year old nephew play some games on it this weekend before I noticed the scratches, though the kid doesn't have long fingernails or anything like that. He does press super hard (for a child) on the screen. I don't think it was anything that he did.

Does anyone else have small scratches on their screen that are visible when the screen is off?

Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the scratches?

I doubt that something like this is covered by the warranty, and even if I took it to the Apple store, I think they'd assume that I was just picking nits seeing as they are pretty hard to see.

I've only been using a microfiber towel the clean/buff the screen.

Those small scratches are in the oleophobic coating which is why I think the whole Gorilla Glass debate is useless when all phones have that coating.

Hmm. I've had my iPad for two months now, use it every day with no screen protector, clean it with my t-shirt and I have no scratches whatsoever. (Maybe I just can't see them, but I looked over it pretty thoroughly just now and can't make anything out). I do use a smart cover when it's not in use or docked.

It's possible it's your screen protector scratching it. I didn't get one because they're so outrageously priced in my country but I've never been satisfied with ones I had on other devices regardless.

The only visible scratches (one on my iPad, and one on my iPhone 3G) have come from cleaning. If you're not careful, dust/sand can get on cloths and scratch the screens.

I don't use any protection and I routinely give them to kids to play with.

The backs get fairly scratched up though.

I think my lesson is to not clean them excessively. Just every now and again to remove oil, but the more I clean, the bigger the risk I'll scratch it.
