Apple iPhone/iPod touch App Discussion and Recommendations

Probably asked a million times already but whats the best free painting application on the app store? Is Sketchbook Mobile Express the best one out or is there one better?

Also, can I put word/excel/powerpoint files on my iPhone? And if so what is the best free editor/reader available?

Any other apps/games people are addicted to at the moment?

I posted this in the official Rock Band thread but I still have a couple of codes left...

A few of my friends have been working on an app for the iPhone/iPod Touch app store called Rock Hero. It's essentially a way to catalogue all of your songs on the device, having a portable way of viewing your collection everywhere and anywhere with weekly updates as they're announced and also to create personal playlists or generate random ones, so it's pretty useful for Rock Band parties -- instead of waiting for your friends to spend 10 minutes going up and down the menu looking for a song to play you can pass the app around, which is particularly useless if you have 600 songs like me.

There is a Rock Band and Guitar Hero specific version of each app, and they've been kind enough to give me 10 promo codes for each copy to give away here so if you're interested in getting a free copy of the app just send me a PM letting me know what version you want.

If you'd like to buy a copy, here are links to the app store:

Rock Hero: Rock Band Edition
Rock Hero: Guitar Hero Edition

i've been using an app called gowalla for a couple of days, and it's really interesting. addictive even, because it's a restaurant/entertainment guide with ACHIEVEMENTS :lol yes, the app rewards you for countless things accomplished around the city by giving you a reward badge and findable 'items' left by people who visited the same spot (and all the badges and items are absolutely beautiful little rendered icons, very cute).

when you launch the app, you're presented with a list of nearby spots (restaurants, galleries, etc.) through gps, and if you're actually at one of the spots, you can press the 'check in' button. when you check in, you can drop an item in your stash, and when someone else checks in, they can trade an item in their stash to pick it up.

you're actively encouraged to create a new spot (complete with a description and a nice little icon you can choose that suits it) because you're rewarded for different thresholds you cross (created 5, 10, 50 spots rewards), meanwhile making the app flourish in the process, a great idea.

there's even a kind of 'event' section of the app, where they give you a kind of scavenger hunt/road trip kind of laundry list of places to visit, and once you check in to each spot in the list, you unlock that reward too. they all go in your gallery, really beautiful icons. the 360 achievement ocd syndrome is kicking up in me with this app :lol

Ha, that's really neat! I don't have a data plan so without access on the go, I wouldn't get the most out of it.

Is there a simple, good, free list app?

Right now, I use Zenbe for grocery lists, making lists of movies I want to see, etc. But it's slow, annoying to use, and buggy.

What's your go-to listing app, preferably one that's free? Something with more functionality than notes, since I like the ability to check off completed/received items and such.

Mobile Safari on any platform is hands-down the best browsing experience in a handheld mobile platform.

Seriously.

It's so good, I sometimes use it OVER my laptop at home. Obviously not for serious web-stuff, but for casual browsing or looking up stuff on wikipedia, it's exceptional.

Pfft. "Is it useful?".
Yeah sure it's just the Apple cult telling you that it's better, there are other phones with touchscreens that are just as good and some of them even have real keyboards too

/sarcasm

i think the way the app gives you incentive to create new places is brilliant. great way to start a social network.

I like evernote.

I like ShopShop.

I use To Do's. It's a simple list app that allows you to set priorities to show more important stuff first, check off what you've done/bought, and best of all it's free.

HOLY DAMN, Brushes is the best application ever!
I used to have SketchBook X, but it freakin' pales in comparison.
Best bucks I've ever spent on the app store, together with Rock Band.

Brushes is pretty sweet. I don't use it much, but I like it nevertheless. And competition from rival apps have seen Brushes adding tons of features to keep up. Good stuff.

As I asked in another thread, what's the best chat app?

You already have a few replies. I think most people will point to Beejive. It really depends on what you're willing to spend on a chat app. For me, $10 isn't all that much, and I like the aesthetics. I'm not sure if it's 'worth' 10$ in context of iPhone apps, but int the context of 'it's just $10', I think it's fine.

http://tapbots.com/pastebot/

Tapbots, the makers of the slickets iPhone apps has made their best app yet. PasteBot is a powerful clipboard manager that stores text & images copied from your iPhone/iPod Touch. Organize, apply filters to, and copy clippings to be pasted or sent to other apps.

If you have a Mac, they even give you a free preference pane that will automatically sync your Mac's clipboard to and from PasteBot.

I think I'll wait until Christmas to see if there's going to be a sale or not.

just got my 3gs yesterday. this thing is fucking amazing. apps so far

yelp
facebook
nytimes
aim
pandora
neogaf
mark the spot
dragon dictation

all free...i love this thing!

First of all, someone recommended the free GPS app Waze.

This thing sucks.

Second of all, is there any app that gives you directions based on traffic conditions?

Any app to edit Google Documents? Google's web app only allows me to read them :(

Bing from Microsoft is slick as hell. I'm amazed. Replaces the google app for me as I've recently gotten a separate RSS reader (Reeder - Also, very good).

I feel so guilty for downloading Beejive for some reason. The main reason why I finally decided on it over IM+ is due to the reviews saying the experience was more solid. I hope they integrate Skype soon.

For now, I guess I can use the external Skype app, even though it doesn't support push. Dunno if IM+ for Skype supports it.

how do you find the bing app on the app store?

I did say I don't think it's worth the money in context of an iPhone app, but what the hey, it's $7 for you. I barely use IM apps, I just wanted a good one. If you use yours a lot, you'll forget that it was even $7.

Beejive kicks ass, I don't even use it every day (or even near every day) and I still feel like I easily got my $10 worth out of it.

So, IM+ may have more support for stuff altogether but it isn't as solid a product?

Speaking of I'm using the aim app. Shall I say I was using the aim until the third time I restored. Now the app just hangs on the signing in screen when trying to log in.

Since I started getting data, I've since activated push and been using Beejive a bit more. It is a nice app. I don't know how much more solid it is, but it works mostly for what I need. Good stuff. I have skype app for skype, and only use that if I'm desperate in a way. I would rather use my computer in that case.

Yes but only in USA. Bing doesn't do anything outside the US.

The Bing app is good since it has movies, news and other things included, but I think Dragon Search is the best search app. It lets you flick from Google (or Yahoo/Bing) to Youtube to Twitter to Wikipedia...it's awesome. And the voice search works great.

Anyone got any recommendations for an app to keep track of my diet. There's a lot of calorie counters out there for people who are losing weight but when I'm bulking I get lazy with tracking protein intake etc. Is there an app specifically for bodybuilding diets? Or something just as good?

Edit: ended up using the Daily Burn app (used to know it as Gyminee). It's actually exactly what I need, allows you to add favourite foods and just click on them when you have a munch. I paid the £1.79 to add unlimited favourite foods and for other stuff just for convenience sake. Gives you detailed reports on your intake etc and weighs it up against your exercise habits. Only problem is it needs internet access to upload the data to the site, so it's not really native. That's not really a big problem for me though.

So what's the deal with the current versions of Shazam and Midomi? I'v noticed they are both now fairly expensive apps (although Shazam has a free version).

Back in the day I remember the battles of shazam vs. Midomi.

How do they hold up as paid apps now?

This review might help. I still have the free version of Shazam but paid for the 'Red' version. I hate that it is labeled as (Shazam)RED, so it doesnt show up properly when searching with Spotlight, and sometimes the app hits me with sign up adds on start up.

I bought Music id and like it. I also use the lyrics lookup function occasionally. Plus it's cheaper.

Thanks. Midomi? I never heard of music id.

I don't have iTunes on this computer to get a link but Cooliris on iPhone is worth checking out. It's a visual way to look at search results, some integrated sites and news. It feels like a Minority Report way to browse information, pretty fancy stuff. It might be slow on a 3G, but runs great on a 3GS.

This stinks. My iPhone was signaling a "No Service" message where the AT&T signal is. It's been like that for an hour so I resetted the iPhone. It keeps freezing on the Apple logo and by now has drained the battery dry. So I plug it into the USB slot of my PowerBook G4 so it can charge. It brings up the battery screen with a red line like the one below:

HT1476_1.jpg

And so it attempts to charge until it gets to the point where it thinks it'll resume restarting the phone which it freezes on the apple logo once again and just repeats the whole process from square one. I tried the wall outlet, and that doesn't work either. Is there a way to keep it from resetting itself, and thus, fully charge for once? And what's with the freezing at the apple logo anyway? I got work in another 2 hours and it'll suck without having an operating phone.

Haven't bought it. Spending too much on apps already to get all three :/

I was using Shazam, and it's pretty good at what it does, but I got frustrated because album art wasn't showing up and the ads were annoying me.

So I bought Midomi SoundHound.

First off - I think it's not as good as searching 'recorded' music as Shazam. That is, Shazam seems to do a better job at, say, picking the theme music from the trailer of Avatar for example. It's like Midomi actually uses tones and things, where as Shazam actually matches the audio track if you get my meaning.

That said, Midomi has some really neat iPod integration with your library. This is great, because it gives me something to do if all I want to do is listen to music with my iPhone.

For example, you can start playing a song, then open Midomi, and it will scan the song you're playing and look up things like lyrics, the album and so on. You can also control your ipod from the app and other stuff like that. From there, you can see the albums the track is on, links to youtube videos (for random covers and stuff).

It will give you listings of other tracks you may be missing from that album, and even play them (it's streaming and crap quality - not sure if they are the whole song). A neat touch is that if you DO have the track on your iPod it will link to that instead.

Great for exploring your own music online.

I feel the two apps actually do different things. Shazam will actually match the exact track and album whereas midomi just identifies the tune.

I think Midomi is a little expensive (and it was just on special last month). No doubt I'll probably regret jumping on this just because I'm bored, but there you go, my 2c.

The voice search in the Bing app is incredibly accurate. It recognizes addresses surprisingly well. You can just say "four two three six zero southeast one hundred twenty eigth street redmond washington" or somesuch, in a perfectly normal speaking tone, and it picks it right up.
