It's not looked down upon in concept.

I don't jailbreak because part of the appeal of the iPhone to me is simplicity. Not simplicity in design (although I appreciate that too), but simplicity in general use. For me, I value things just working. Not to say that Jailbreaking is unstable - but adding even one more step in something can change the experience.

Apple spends a LOT of time researching how to remove unnecessary steps, and I appreciate that.

Jailbreaking to me just means doing something else to get my device up and running, and something I have to pay attention to overtime an update comes out, and of course extended troubleshooting should something go wrong. I have nothing agains jailbreaking, it just doesn't suit me.

Also, I generally don't like more than the minimal level of customisation - I'd rather the company I'm paying for just make the right decision (I know that's basically impossible, but that's what a small level of customization is good).

for the record, apart from the 5 icon dock, I quite like your layout there. That said, it's probably the design of one person (or one group), and to be a the whimsy of them for the rest of the apps is not something I'd want. You can argue that the way it is now is just random app icon designs anyway, but there's a sort of unity in the simplicity of random icons on the home screen.

Woooo! I just bought a 8G Touch yesterday and I've been downloading apps for hours. Once my cc has money again I'm dling some Lady Gaga/Jackson 5 songs for Tap Tap Revenge 3 :lol

My 3gs has suddenly stopped finding my wifi at home, weird. Any way to correct this? I got into the settings on the phone and try to input the network info again, and it cant find it.

QUICK QUESTION

Does the T-Pain app work with an iPod Touch?! I MUST KNOW

Depends on which model iPod touch. Also depends if the T-pain app requires an iPhone (developers can choose to lock out hardware). Also depends on whether you have a microphone (the 1st gene ipod touch cannot accept a microphone).

I just bought the Touch yesterday at the Apple Store so I'm assuming it's the most recent model? Apparently the bundled-in headphones have a built-in mic on them, is that true?

I don't know, you're the one with the headphones.

Also, I understand you got the 8GB. The 8GB, as I understand it, is equivalent to the 2ng gene, at least in processor. I'm not sure if this means mic hardware as well or not. That said, it's possibly true that iPod touch also is capable of mic input.

Why don't you check the T-pain information?

Wait a minute - T-Pain now works on your own music? How does that work? DOes it listen to your song and auto tune you to that? Or it just lets you play your own in free mode?

Actually, how does auto tune work? Does it need to know the song you're trying to sing?

There is a sale on an advancet productivity app, Pocket Informant, on the Appstore which ends on the 21st.
It's sold for half-price and all proceeds from this sale will be donated to Doctors Without Borders in Haiti.

Pocket Informant from $12.99 to $6.99

Pocket Informant is an integrated calendaring and GTD-based tasks solution for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Our purpose is to fuse together best-of-class calendaring with best-of-class tasks into one great solution. We have been carefully crafting each new version with exciting new features in each release...and there's still plenty more to come. Here are some of our top current features:

- Push Alarms for events and to dos straight to your phone! (Touch users require WiFi access)
- Today, Month, Day, Week, Agenda, Task, and Search views
- Swipe between Months, Days, and Weeks
- Easily jump to any date in Day and Month views
- Timebars to show your free/busy time at a glance or show mini-text on the month cells instead
- Calendar Filtering: Filter tasks and events by one or more calendars
- Tags and Tag Filtering
- TextExpander support in most text fields
- Expanded detail view to see events and tasks on any day
- Phone Links in Notes
- Tasks integrated with the Calendar Views
- Task Grouping and QuickSearch/Insert
- Full Search of Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar items
- Send Appointment Meeting Requests
- Getting-Things-Done (GTD) management or Franklin Covey ABC/1-99 Prioritization of tasks
- Pre-made filters to quickly find active, due, undated, overdue, and completed tasks
- Today View to show your current appointments, tasks, meeting attendees and alatms
- Starring (flagging) tasks
- Highly customizable views

Syncing:
- Auto-sync will sync changes immediately up to the server and new items from the server sync down every 45 minutes (while PI is running or next time it runs)
- Syncs with Google Calendar and Toodledo.
- Direct to Outlook Sync. Requires WebIS Desktop Sync software (now available). Visit our http://tinyurl.com/yggbk2a for more details.
- Calendar Data is separate from the built-in Calendar

HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM OTHER TASK MANAGERS?
Proper task management is essential, but it’s only part of the picture.
Pocket Informant is a full featured PIM, so it lets you focus on everything you do in a day - not just your task list. We believe bringing your appointments and tasks together in one place is more efficient than working in isolated calendar and task management systems. Pocket Informant is designed to not force you into any one method of doing things - use our Task View as rigidly or freely as you want, using GTD principles, Franklin Covey, or your own system.

WHY DO I NEED THIS WHEN I HAVE A CALENDAR?
We love our iPhones, but we saw some untapped potential for a full-featured PIM. Pocket Informant fills that gap. To start with, we made navigation very natural - simply swipe between the months, or tap the month name to jump to a new date. For those of us who have several events in a day, we built a time bar so you can see how your day is blocked off at a glance. When looking at a day’s activities, we show you your appointments AND tasks together, and we give you nearly the entire screen to see them. We offer a convenient view to quickly see activities going on "today", and we built a great week view as well.

For years, these and numerous other features have made Pocket Informant a must-have application for school teachers, soccer moms, salesmen and executives alike.

If you are a user of Pocket Informant from another platform, be sure to note that while we have crafted the iPhone version from the same stock, it is a different application. Check our website to vote on your most desired features, and follow us on Twitter to provide feedback and see what we're up to – all from our website.

Localizations: English, German, and French. New Languages will be added in future releases.

I don't know, that was a pretty sweet theme. I liked the parts where it was black and grey and showed the weather.

I spent a lot of time last night looking up T-pain videos trying to figure out how it works (I was under the impression it just did the songs that was in the app - like it knew how it was supposed to go and would auto tune that), but discovered it actually just attunes everything.

Sounds like a fun app.

How are people with Voice Band going?

What's the best free/cheap RSS reader?

do you want google reader syncing?

if so, I would recommend reeder for (I think) 3 bucks. best UI out of all the ones I've tried (easiest to star, mark all as read, add notes, share, etc), super fast updating and a nice off-white theme for easier reading in dark environments.

it'll work without syncing but I use that all the time so i think it's a big feature.

I just wanted to make a point of thanking you for posting this. I just got started with the app store and I've been looking for the ultimate productivity app, and I think this is it. I downloaded it and set up my schedule and it's looking great.

It isn't free but Byline is the best RSS reader on the iphone. It's worth the money, I use this app more than anything else on my iphone

I've always wondered why people need their computers/gadgets to display the current weather. Surely you can look up and achieve the same effect ?

Wouldn't it be better to have tomorrows weather displayed so you can make plans ?

I have so much respect for the developers of all these apps. I've been working on a few projects, but wasn't really ever close to finishing ANY of them, so today in four hours I threw together a quickie haha app that should be up on the store any time now for free (WTF AT THE PROCESS OF GETTING SHIT ON THE STORE, HOW MUCH HARDER COULD IT BE AAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH)

Lol. It's a bit hard to visually see the temperature, wind, or humidity from the window, but atleast you tried.

My wife has been having issues with Words with Friends on her iTouch 3rd Gen. Strange timeouts and things that are only resolved by deleting and re-downloading the app (paid version). Any suggestions?

If you're sitting at a windowless cubicle and have your phone docked, it's nice to have it displaying the weather along with all the other info. But I agree with wanting to see the weather for the next day (or two) as well. Some of the latest versions of TouchFlo for the HTC phones have an updated weather display that shows todays weather + 2 (or maybe 3) days right below.

Hey guys, I wanted to ask about the new iPod touch. Does it pack the same processor and increased speed found in the 3GS?

The 8GB model is essentially the 2nd Gen, while the 16GB+ is a newer processor capable of all the fancy-pants Open GL 2.0 or somethingorother stuff (not entirely sure if it's the same as the 3GS, however).

I used to use netnewswire, which was pretty good for being free, but recently I switched to Newsstand. It can take a minute to sync, but it supports several exporting features (instapaper, etc.) and I love the UI.

We really should have two threads.... =(

I have some stupid questions:

1.) I am seriously considering an iPod Touch. Besides the phone features, would I be missing out on anything by getting that rather than an iPhone?

2.) Are there many variations of the iPod Touch? Phones and MP3 players change all the time, so I'm just wondering if the iPod Touch is like those or more like the DS, which rarely has any significant changes.

3.) Are there add-ons for the iPod Touch to give it actual button controls (for games and whatnot)?

1. no gps. no camera. shitty speaker

2. 8 GB version is older, slower hardware. 32 GB and 64 GB versions the ones to get. iPod updated every september like clockwork

3. none that I have seen. maybe next year. the capability is there via the dock connection. Apple has opened it up for development.

1) an iPod touch is a great device. You are missing out on a lot of small features, however. I originally had the 1st gen iPod touch, and it was an amazing device, but have since moved to an iPhone. The first iPod touch didn't have physical volume controls or a speaker, and it was still amazing - these two biggest oversights have been since corrected.

Here's what you miss out on on a current iPod touch that the iPhone does have (with a few comments):

- Phone features. You can't make calls or text messages. No big deal. Actually, the phone features are the least important features of the iPhone to me :lol.

- 3G/EDGE connectivity. Internet everywhere. This will change your life. Being able to access internet everywhere is amazing. Information at all times is the defining feature of the iPhone over the iPod touch.

- Camera. Perhaps the next biggest thing. I carry my iPhone ALL the time. To have a camera available is actually amazing. It's not the best quality, but it still serves a purpose, even though I have a great camera. Rumours abound that the latest iPod touch (introduced last october) was supposed to have one, but it was removed due to manufacturing issues (or perhaps because they just didn't want to add it yet). I would wait atleast until after January to see if they update it. Traditionally, iPod touches are updated once a year in October (along with all iPods), but Apple have been known to make minor updates to storage space earlier. If the camera addition was merely a manufacturing issue, it's possible they may choose to add one in early once they resolve issues. I say just wait out January, because an event is being held by Apple next week. Mostly likely it will have no iPod touch updates, but you never know, and can pay to just wait out the week.

- Microphone. The built-in microphone (duh, it's a phone it has to have one) is a great feature. It makes some apps like Shazam, a great thing to have. That said, the latest iPod touch is microphone ready (accepts a microphone input in the headset jack), and I believe may even ship with a microphone on the headset (someone confirm this). Still pretty cool to have one in the device, though. Makes the voice recording app a bit more useful/handy. Also many apps are more useable with a built-in mic (music apps, mostly).

- GPS. Google Maps is amazing with GPS. Without it, it's more of a novelty (although internet connectivity everywhere is important too). It means you can use those GPS apps as well.

- Silence switch/and vibrate. The iPhone has a mode to switch to go to a vibrate mode, mostly for phone reasons. It's not ultimately necessary for an iPod, but can be useful in games to have rumble, or just suddenly silence it.

- Speaker. The alteast iPod touch DOES have a tiny internal speaker. The iPhone speaker is a lot better. Not really a big deal, though. There's also an earpiece speaker for phone use (unnecessary for iPod touch).

- Proximity sensor. To detect when the phone is brought up to your face to shut off the touch screen. Unnecessary for iPod touch.

- Plastic back and thickness. iPhone is plastic (for better radio reception), thicker, and heavier. iPod touch is stainless steel (with a plastic window for wifi) - this makes it scratch easier, if that matters.

2) There have been three generations of iPod touch.
- 1st gen. Released October 2007. Flat stainless steel back, matte black trim on the front. Does not have an external volume rocker control, nor a speaker (it has a tiny pixel speaker capable of making clicks). Available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB models.
- 2nd gen. REleased October 2008. New design, feels thinner with a curved back that wraps around to make the trim on the front. Introduced the volume controls, and speaker, fixing the biggest omissions from the first. Also has a faster processor. Processor-wise it is faster than the iPhone 3G (moderately), but not the 3GS. 8GB-32GB. I'm not sure if this has microphone or clicker support.
- 3rd gen. Released October 2009. newer processor capable of open GL shaders, and I THINK sits on par with the 3GS (although I don't think it's the same processor). I believe it also comes with microphone support and clicker support (remote). The 8GB model of this gen is NOT the newer processor - not sure what the microphone/clicker support for this model is either. Design is identical to 2nd gen.

3) Add-on controls: not sure. With the latest OS, apple made it possible for third parties to access the dock. Theoretically it's possible, and I think some concepts have been thrown around, but not sure if any are in production, however. It's a moot point though. As you know, add-ons need to be supported by the developers. It won't get that much support. This is not really an issuer me. Firstly, games that are designed for the platform are always better. Trying to shoe-horn in an add-on control mechanism - well, you may as well just go buy a DS or PSP. YOu'll miss out on some games that need it, but that's not a huge deal. Secondly, you DO grow accustomed to on screen controls. It's not ideal, and can be really bad if poorly implemented, but it can also be passable. Again, don't expect to play all sorts of precision games that require d-pads to be any good, and you'll be fine. The iPod touch is its own device.

So I just learned in the iPad thread that there are styluses available for the iPhone/iPod Touch. This could be really useful for my wife, who is a student -- is there a notepad app available that could take advantage of the stylus?

It probably isn't that useful as a note taking device. It's a pen with a conductive sponge on the end. Think about as if you were using the eraser end of a pencil. It's not ideal. Ok, for maybe more precision in some games, or if you want to draw something, but writing with such a device is not great. How many words can you fit across an iPhone screen?

Classics has dropped to free temporarily.

They had nothing to do with the iBooks App, but say they're proud to have influenced the UI.

Mrkgoo is half-right; I did find the Pogo Stylus not very useful for writing on the iPhone screen (mind you, all my opinions on performance are filtered through a Power Support screen protector). However, I eventually discovered the Dagi Stylus and the small versions work great--unfortunately I keep losing them ^~^. But I think the Pogo Sketch will be worth another shot with iPad's much bigger screen and I'll also order the large Dagi Stylus as well. It'd be great though if I can manage with just one stylus for both the iPhone and iPad.

The concern about the small size of the iPhone screen is a valid one but the best note taking apps have been designed to overcome that problem. My favorite two for note taking are SpeedText and Note Taker. Note Taker has a great tutorial so try the lite version if you can. Those should be great for quickly taking notes in class. For 'note creation' though you might find Tanzaku Pad another worthy purchase. While it has more useful features than my favorite two, I found it too slow for quickly taking out and jotting down notes and ideas. Beyond those three apps, there are other options worth experimenting with like WritePad (handwriting recognition), Fastfinga, Phatnotes, Finger Memo, handnotes, Sketches 2 , Draw and so on and so forth...

All those apps were designed with fingers in mind but I found them novelties, at best, without a [Dagi] stylus. It remains to be seen how the triple screen size and double resolution of the iPad will affect the usefulness of SpeedText and Note Taker's UI. I might find the no frills, 'here is your screen--write' ethos of Finger Memo or Sketches 2 much better when I don't have to worry about scrolling or how many words I can fit on a 3.5in screen. That said, if you want to jump in and start playing with the apps before iPad comes out, I'd recommend getting one of the Dagi styli I settled on.

I should also mention Evernote. Writepad is only app, that I tried, which offers handwriting recognition. Almost all the others store your notes as pictures that may be exported to the photos (although a few focus on email export, like fast finga, or even posting to twitter, like Draw). This is where Evernote proved extremely useful to my note taking setup as a feature of its iPhone app is the ability to search through pictures for words, a sort of semi OCR. So my notes were exported to the camera roll, imported into Evernote, grouped together and then synced over the cloud to their desktop app. SpeedText offers Evernote integration which is a huge plus over other competing apps. Evernote, combined with your favorite of the writing apps, should be a great tool for students.

So... er, that's it. I might do an update when I get an iPad

For the guy asking above, yes T-Pain works with ipod touch and to the other guy -- I've had a touch 32 gig 2nd gen for a while and I'm very satisfied with it not being a phone and having my (lower cost) phone as an aside. It means longer battery life, slimmer case and much cheaper price. People are different -- all I want from a portable multi-media tool like this is wi-fi, to use it as a mini computer. If you're after GPS, and for some people that's a big thing, then of course you're missing out. But I'm very satisfied with my Touch and have never felt the need to do anything with it that the iphone can and this can't.
