Apple iPhone/iPod touch App Discussion and Recommendations

I'm probably LTTP on this, but Dropbox is excellent for viewing PDFs and PPTs (atleast that's how I use it) on the go. I suggest y'all check it out. Comes with free 2GB storage.
Essentially free/trial MobileMe.

Also the new painting app SketchBook by AutoDesk is frackin' amazing. Eventhough the icon is ugly as sin. Much, much better than Brushes. Needs a couple UI refinements but on the whole, it's excellent. There's a trial version.

Thank you guys :)
here I was updating all the pages that I follow but RSS solves that :D Do you have google reader as your homepage on your PC? Also do you always have a page open so you can check it out or?
The Google Reader webapp for iPhone is good. However, I am a huge fan of the Byline application, which I use all the time. I like that it can sync articles for offline reading, and the UI is simple and smooth.

As for when to read RSS -- I check in a couple of times a day, on average, but if I'm busy at work or vacationing or something like that, I can go many days without reading at all. If you subscribe to high-traffic feeds -- like for basic news or extremely active blogs -- then you will fall behind very quickly. If you read mainly low-traffic stuff, then you won't ever get overwhelmed with items.

A cool little puzzle game we developed at my company. We also did a WiiWare version, which is available in Euroland only at the moment. We're getting some very positive reactions, and planning some cool updates. So I thought I'd share it with you guys :-)

Oh and I'm damn proud of it!

Important Notice!

I got an e-mail from my web host today (Dreamhost.com) that the site where I host the web app has been consuming too much CPU usage (probably the web app itself), so they have temporarily disabled the entire domain completely. I have contacted support to see what my options are. Initially, they appear to be suggesting I upgrade to a private server solution but this could cost $$$ depending on how much memory my PHP scripts require... for which I have absolutely no idea.

Further information as it develops. In the mean time, the web app is unavailable.

I use the weather channel app. I really like its 24hour, 36hour, this week and radar features. I also like the app combined with the tweak that adds the temp onto the app icon itself.

How do you do that tweak? I've been hoping for an app that does that

Wow, I just downloaded Wunder Radio and it's nuts.

Was listening to a Detroit radio station broadcast the Steelers/Lions game on my way home from my wife's parent's house...in good quality without static and only minor blips in connection due to driving into various areas of coverage.

FM Tuner? Who needs that shit? If you don't want it, it's not included, if you do want it, you pay 7 bucks for Wunder Radio and get access to radio stations across the entire country.

FM Tuner: 0 - Wunder Radio: 1

Just awesome.
Yeah, I have this too and it is awesome. I mainly use it for sports - I can listen to the Panthers on Sirius, but with Wunder I can also listen to Charlotte sports talk during the week. Plus it's fun to tune into local stations across the country and listen to their fans implode after a bad loss :lol

I installed an FM modulator in my car and it's just like listening to the radio (even keeps the phone charged).

How much bandwidth are you guys using with this? I'd want to use it at work but i'm scared of running up bandwidth bills. Here in Canada we only get 1GB per month.

You're probably fine. If you listen to a 128kbps stream, it's about 56MB for an hour of listening. So just under 1MB per minute. Cut that in half if you listen to a talk radio stream thats usually 64 kbps (or even 32kbps for some)

You'd have to listen to a lot of radio to go over your 1GB limit. Plus, Rogers will text you when you've used 80% and 100% of your capacity, and overage is like 3c/MB or something like that, so don't worry about it too much.

Sup! I'm in need for 3 app recommendations.

Between quickoffice and docs to go does any have dropbox integration (letting me
saving to and opening documents from dropbox) ?

Twitterific Premium vs Tweetie 2. Which one is the best?

What is the best password manager and is there
any with both Mac and Windows clients?

Hey guys, I asked this in another thread but didn't get an answer, so hopefully someone "in here" can help!

I was thinking about getting an iPod Touch for organising and games/music capabilities. There seem to be the three different sizes (8gb, 32gb and 64gb), however it says that "increased performance is only available in 32gb and 64gb models." Are the 8gbs that much slower? I don't often sit around listening to portable music, so I don't need much space, but if the 8gb is gimped in terms of speed on games or apps I don't think I'll bother....it's an extra $150 AUS for the 32gb.

What say you?

The 8GB is a 2nd gen iPod touch, and it's snappy enough. In fact, it was the fastest of the 4 "iDevices" up until 4 months ago when the iPhone 3GS was introduced.

It's by no means a slow device, even by today's standards.

What may be more relevant is that, unlike the current gen iPod touch (and iPhone 3GS), it doesn't support OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, but for the moment there aren't many games (if any) that support it anyway.

My suggestion is, if you're planning keeping it for a good chunk of time without upgrading, then for future-proof purposes avoid the 8GB, not only because of what I already said, but because you'll find out that 8GB get really short really fast.

I would go with the 32 GB model. OS 3.0 doesn't run super great on the old hardware (my experience with an iPhone 3G). The new hardware will last you a long time and, as more games and apps take advantage of the new hardware, you won't be left behind.

I second this recommendation.I was debating between the 32gb or 8gb, and decided to go with the 32gb. I have already got more than 1gb of apps on there, plus 11gb of music.

Applications are sandboxed by Apple so that type of integration is usually not possible. There is integration with MobileMe though… if you're jailbroken then it's easy to copy files from dropbox to quickoffice and docstogo but you can't copy new files back for syncing though…

Erm, Tweetie 2. But, after trying them all, I prefer Birdfeed for its simple elegance and then Reportage and Twitterfon for some specific features.

I just know Macs but 1password is awesome. Pricey but awesome. With its bookmarklet it has a great integration with mobile Safari.

Thank you as always, Charred Greyface.

God dammit Apple :( And here I was thinking that the ability to have iDisk integration, like Quickoffice has, would mean they would let that happen with 3rd party storage apps too. The iPhone still has a long way to go.

Anyway, I am JB'n and would appreciate if you could tell me how can I copy files from dropbox, yes :P

Thanks. I'm not heavy tweeter anyway, so for the moment I'm using Twiterrific (free). The icon is cuter. I'll take that in consideration if I ever decide to go with a paid app.

Yeah, maybe I just go with that and forget desktop integration for the moment, since I'm Windows only and will be until the next MBP revision. I definitely need a password manager, no matter where. 1password pro worth the extra 3€?

  1. In DropBox, open then star the items you'd like to locally cached so you can use them with QuickOffice/DocsToGo
  2. Install a file system browser from Cydia. I'm using the paid version of iFile for these directions but you can try mobileFinder or even Terminal for commandline action if you know how.
  3. Install AppLinks (actually not needed if you have the paid version of iFile but...). Open AppLinks and press the 'recycle' icon in the bottom left corner. When the sign pops up saying "Operation done" you may exit the app.
  4. Open iFile. Press the 'Home' icon in the bottom dock (it'll take you into the /var/mobile mobile). Press the AppLinks button (well, folder) you should see and continue to (scroll down if you have to) Dropbox > Library > Caches > CachedFiles ( and then Public if the files are in your Dropbox public folder)
  5. We'll bookmark this folder now for future use. To do so, first press the bookmarks icon in the middle of the 'dock' at the bottom. Then press the '+' icon at the bottom right corner. Then press the 'Create' button in the top right corner. And press the 'Done' button in the top right corner to take us back to the folder.
  6. Ok, we were about to copy. Press the Edit button in the top right corner. 'Check' (press) the button besides the files you want. Press the 'arrowed window' icon in the bottom left corner. Press the 'Copy/Link' button. Press the Done button in the top corner.
  7. Navigate back to the AppLinks folder by pressing the buttons in the top right (or press the home icon and then the AppLinks folder). Scroll to either DocsToGo or QuickOffice.
    • For DocsToGo, you should navigate to DocsToGo > Documents > Local Files
    • For QuickOffice, you should navigate to QuickOffice > Documents
    • Don't forget to bookmark either folder for quicker access next time.
  8. If you're in the right QuickOffice or DocsToGo folder now paste your file(s). To do so, first press the 'Edit' button in the top right corner. Then press the 'arrow window' icon in the bottom right corner. Finally, press the 'Paste' button.
  9. You can exit iFile now and open QuickOffice/DocsToGo to edit your document.

Have you tried the AutoFill feature that Apple added for 3.0+?

Yeah, I think 1Password Pro is worth it. Make sure you read the manual/faq so you learn all the features.

Facebook iPhone Dev Quits Project Over Apple Tyranny

by Jason Kincaid on November 11, 2009

“My decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple’s policies.” – Joe Hewitt

Facebook developer Joe Hewitt, the man behind the immensely popular Facebook application for iPhone, has just tweeted that he’s done with the project:

“Time for me to try something new. I’ve handed the Facebook iPhone app off to another engineer, and I’m onto a new project.”

We reached out to Hewitt for more details, and he attributed his decision to quit the project entirely on Apple’s tyrannical App Store approval policies:
My decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple’s policies. I respect their right to manage their platform however they want, however I am philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process. I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms, and soon gatekeepers will start infesting the lives of every software developer.

The web is still unrestricted and free, and so I am returning to my roots as a web developer. In the long term, I would like to be able to say that I helped to make the web the best mobile platform available, rather than being part of the transition to a world where every developer must go through a middleman to get their software in the hands of users.”

I couldn’t agree with Hewitt’s sentiments more, and it’s a breath of fresh air to see such a prominent developer quit the App Store. Apple has built some truly fantastic products, but their approach to the App Store is frightening — especially given the fact that other platforms may see the iPhone’s success and start adopting a similar model.

Hewitt’s move is a big deal, because he has essentially been the one-man show behind the iPhone’s most popular application of all time. Hewitt has been quite vocal about his opposition to Apple’s ridiculous App Store approval policies — in a post last August, he wrote that “the review process needs to be eliminated completely.” And to be clear, Hewitt is still at Facebook, though he can’t talk about the next project he’s working on.

Be sure to check out our TalkCrunch interview with Hewitt back in 2007, back when he had just launched the social network’s iPhone web app (note that the native iPhone app wasn’t released until summer 2008).

Hewitt joined Facebook in 2007 when it acquired Parakey, the company he co-founded with Blake Ross. Hewitt is also known for helping create the Firefox web browser as well as the popular Firebug development plugin.

The Facebook app is probably the best out of all the iPhone apps I've ever used.

Hey guys, I'm wondering which music player gives you the most customization options? Searching the app store the best I could find was Opus which lets you assign commands to touch controls and change the screen orientation to display upside down or landscape. As well as the basic repeat, shuffle, search through playlists/albums etc. Is there any music player with more options than this?

I'm thinking of taking a mobile device class and making my own music player if no one has done what I have in mind.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'm having problems with the Notepad.app.

I'm not even sure how to explain this...

I created two notes on Mail and synced them to my phone a long time ago. Great. Time passes, the notes are no longer useful so I delete them from my phone. When I go to sync with iTunes the notes get copied back onto the phone. I guess I forgot to delete them from Mail. So I go ahead and delete them from mail AND my phone and sync back up. The notes reappear! Huh? Okay I'm sure I deleted them so I delete again, empty trash, delete on my phone and sync back up. Finally rid of them! So here I am thinking the problem was resolved when one day I decide to make a new note on my phone and as soon as I press the "+" button those two notes I deleted a while back suddenly reappear! WTF? I delete them again and sync up and the notes reappear in mail as well! I delete them from mail and delete them from my phone and they appear to be gone... but then I try to make a new note on my phone and the problem repeats itself!

This is so weird. I've been having lots of small issues like this since the 3.0 update. They're never the biggest problems but they are annoying nonetheless. HALP!

Is Apple aware of problems like this? I just assumed that the problem was something minor that could be resolved easily... there's also that thing about the iPod.app crashing every so often and it's general slowness :\

Just discovered Air Video. A cool app that lets you stream movies from your PC/Mac straight to your phone. The interface is simple and user friendly, it works over 3G, and it even does on the fly conversion. I've tested it with .wmv, .avi, and even .flv files and it has worked flawlessly everytime. Depending on the specs of your pc/mac/server, you may get some buffering, but it still works pretty good.

With this app I don't need to store as many videos on the phone itself and always have access to my complete video library. :D

This phone just keeps getting better and better.

How is that air video compared to orb?! Orb sometimes acts all weird and I'm looking to see if I can get anything to work better.

I haven't used Orb, so I couldn't tell you, but on my limited tests every video I've played has been fine and the quality has been good.

Anyone who has some good recipe/cook-book app that they can recommend?

I don't mean all the thousand of "static" cookbooks, but ones where you can add your own recipes as well.

I've seen three that might be interesting:
Handy Cookbook
Chef
AllMyRecipes

As I've understood none of them support conversion between metric and Imperial (UK and US).

Anybody who has tried any of the three mentioned above or can recommend some of the others?

Hey guys, I'm new to the iphone 3g thing and I just want to get some app recommendations. Here are some things that describe me...

- I do remote access stuff
- I google map
- I yelp
- I do facebook a lot

Some of those things are pretty well covered by the default apps, Safari is excellent for web browsing, Maps is Google Maps (additionally, you can get Google Earth from the App Store), Mail is a great email client.

There is a free official Facebook app which you should get, same for Flickr.

Don't know much about the other stuff though, but the app store has a whole category for photography apps, check that out.

Be a little more specific:

Do you need emails the minute they arrive in your mailbox or do you read them in a bunch at certain times during the day? Are you addicted to GoogleMail's threading and other features?

Are you connecting remotely to a computer to manage stuff or are you just trying to browse and maybe upload to your home system? Do you have control over the router connected to the computer?

Will you use the iPhone's camera a lot or do you carry around a much better camera that you'll reach for first?

To be more specific.

Remote access- I want to be able to browse and probably upload files.
Camera phone- this will be the camera i use when i dont have my dslr for those I wish i had a camera moments.

TomTom recently updated and with it came a free map update and added music playback support (very weak, nothing more than just a double home tap in terms of functionality), but the free map update was very appreciated, and actually made my home address show up finally :lol

Still very impressed with the iPhone's ability to replace my old stand-alone GPS unit, and this is stock, without that TomTom Car Kit. The only time it breaks down is when I'm in the middle of Philly completely surrounded by skyscrapers. GPS has a hard time tracking, plus the streets are a lot closer together so it's a GPS nightmare if the signal isn't spot on.

Highly recommended, even if the initial point of entry is a bit steep.

PS Mobile for some very simple postprocessing

I use Jaadu for remote access. See their support website before you purchase to make sure you can actually set it up on your computer. If not, you could check out LogMeIn Ignition and their services. It's more expensive though.

For upload and just regular file access I use Briefcase (mac only) and Dropbox

Good stuff, I was going to recommend those as well. In addition I also have TimeLapse, Mill Color, CameraBag, Best Camera, Photogene and TiltShift Generator on my phone. You should read Phil Coffman's writeup of his Photo taking and processing workflow on the iPhone.

You might also find it useful to use the iPhone with your DSLR. Try out PhotoBuddy and DSLR Remote.

You already have a DSLR so getting hardware accessories to make the iPhone take better photos could be pointless. There are options though if you're interested; from telescopes and magnetic add on lenses to tripods and Factron's complete case system. Not to mention the OWLE but that's a whole 'nother story... I've been hoping a Gaffer would test one of these accessories and let the rest of us know if they are useful. Would you be the one? ;p

Oh yeah, The iPhoneography Blog and Hand Held Hollywood should be your best friends if you're taking iPhone photography seriously.

Awesome, I now have Tiltshift and Mill Color added to my photo-related collection. Now I just wish I was more motivated to actually take pictures :lol
