You guys would definitely be an anomaly, at least anecdotally.

Despite the other train of thought that seems to be weaving in and out of the discussion (iPhones are for hipsters and college kids), I don't really think our circle of friends are a special case. The majority of us are mid-to-late 20s and working in an office environment. We're not out in the boonies or anything like that either, a lot of us commute into Philly or Baltimore.

I'm not saying "I've never seen an iPhone around here", all I said was that everyone I know hates AT&Ts service too much to get one. If that changes, I think a lot of us (myself and the girlfriend included) would seriously consider switching.

Hell, I've been due for my New every Two for a year now. :lol

Try visiting some places like Japan or Hong Kong. Softbank basically gives iPhone 4's away in Japan, as do 4 of the major Hong Kong carriers. They literally are everywhere, I saw them about as much in Hong Kong as I did in Greenwich Village, which is one of the most Applefied areas in the US.

That's because they aren't using AT&T's shitty service.

It's not that iPhones aren't popular, it's just that AT&T's service severely limits who is willing to put up with having a phone that can't make calls :lol.

Come on, new Apple TV!
I don't think anything about the AppleTV could pull me away from my current MacMini setup...but I'd love to be wrong :D

I work for Verizon and half the people in my department use iPhones.

An iOS device with apps would be infinitely more useful than my current Apple TV, which is used rarely.

Besides, I'm tired of paying for Xbox Live just for Netflix, and I don't like the PS3 implementation.

AppleTV had better be streaming shows for free like Hulu and ownership of shows for less than a buck.

One thing that it will be interesting to see is if it's iOS 4 and what the storage is like on it.

With the Mac Mini jumping in price and if this thing is $99-$199 with some options, it makes sense to buy the new AppleTV device. Should be fun!

PS3 implementation is superior to the Xbox version with the exception of the disc requirement. Is that what you mean?

They'll have $.99 rentals and Hulu and Netflix, most likely. Sounds like you'll be disappointed.

The interface is also a lot slower, and it has weird syncing and scaling problems on some older content. If I load the exact same content on the 360, it will work fine.

These countdown images are neat, but it would be an even neater challenger for a programmer to render an automatic countdown as an animated gift that actually counted down.

Doesn't mean they can't change the model. I'm really shocked though that they are going backwards in HD resolution which is too bad but since the new device is to be said to use the same CPU as the iPhone 4, I guess it's not shocking.

The old Apple TV is also 720P. They've never offered anything else.

They aren't going backwards. I can't believe these dumb rumors even hit tech-savvy people (which GAF is normally composed of).

Interesting, hadn't noticed. I have Netflix on both, but use the PS3 more often because of search. (Plus I am afraid my Xbox is dying).

What kind of sound output can we expect from the new Apple TV/iTV? I would assume lossless would be out of the question.

Is that even possible? *paging ckholer*

I think I'm the only one who actually uses his countdown widget thing, but it's probably the most useful |OT| object one can have available to them.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with Apple TV.

App based could really put the cat amongst the pigeons. The transition with the iPad and iPhone 4 to higher-resolutions with single purchase apps that can display well on everything would be very appealing to people.

Angry Birds invading the living room soon no doubt ...

So will those of us with older Apple TVs be left out in the cold, or will we be able to update our boxes?
My guess would be left out in the cold.

Even if they could update the boxes, the internal hardware of the units may prohibit them from taking advantage of some of the features they intend to roll out.

That hardware is ancient, dude. I'm going to use mine as a paperweight. Or a doorstop.

this is all i should be seeing right?

It should be a half hour long video with a countdown and a spinning circle graph doing bleeps and bloops.

How old are you? Serious question. Almost everyone I know has a Blackberry paid for by work on a Verizon (or other) corporate account. A few people have iPhones in addition as their personal phone. I know that I for one could probably convince our I.T. department to allow iPhones if they came to Verizon. Half those dudes already have iPhones (or Androids). Even some of the older partners have been asking if we can go iPhone.
what they got from work? ahh.. okay. yes. not what they wanted though.

This is weird. I'm on my jailbroken iPhone 4 - I click on the link for the apple stream test, the only thing showing up is a black box with a play-button in it. But nothing plays.. This is an iOS 4.0.1 device..

Just checked it out on both my iPad and iPhone 4 (non-jailbroken running the latest) and they both work fine.

Not sure what the deal would be there.

...

As a reminder, if the livestream from Apple doesn't work for you, there is a ustream in the OP that apparently is going to work for anyone/everyone.

Yea, I'll use the ustream link. I just wonder why apples don't work on a jailbroken iPhone 4, interesting. =)

I'll probably watch it on the Mac Mini instead then.

Edit: Also, updated the OP to make your live streaming options a bit more clear.

We will see a new full featured iOS device today.

Similar hardware to the current touch (3rd gen), same res, in a smaller form factor. 8GB and 16GB only for pricing reasons (it'll have to start near $150).

It will be taking the place of the nano.

Tremendous boost to the iOS platform.

Meanwhile the 3,5" iPod touch will evolve to a retina display etc. It'll be the "Pro" model of iOS portable media players.

Whadayathink?

I knows it all.

Doesn't really have anything to do with this press conference but I'm seriously considering the purchase of a Macbook Pro.

The test video is working on my jailbroken iPhone and jailbroken iPad
