Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

it's a job in lumber. Interview Seems so fancy for a job dealing with wood for minimum wage.

I emailed back and cancelled. Not worth spending money or looking like a fool.

I worked a seasonal position at Macy's years ago and you have to wear a suit there to work and that is basically minimum wage.

It's a good sign when you submit an application and they contact you to set up a phone interview an hour later, right?

Maybe? I had that sort of thing happen but apparently I was just the first person to apply. It depends on when they say they'll make the final decision. If it's in the next week you're good, any longer and you were just the first app.

It appears to be one of those positions with no closing date, so maybe they respond as they get applications they're interested in.

They're clearly interested but it could also mean that they are having trouble attracting / keeping people. I'd check glassdoor to see if there's a bunch of recent negative feedback.

Not necessarily. I had a company do this to me and it turned out they were looking for me to do door to door sales for them on commission with no base salary, which was completely at odds (Like on every single level) with the job description they had advertised.

Edit: ahh just saw your post above. If it was a reputable employer I'd say it's a very good sign

It's a good sign you've gotten through one of the hoops.

Think of the interview process as the NCAA Tournament, lots of hopefuls, but only one makes it--unless they're hiring for multiples of course.

Phone interview is just one part of the screening process.

Next is usually in person interviews. Most places stop here.

Sometimes you need to do 2nd and 3rd round interviews.

And during that process you may be tested dependent on your field and experience. New programmers frequently get programming problems and such.

In my field, I had to do some writing samples and business problems.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Wow.

Got to second interview and it was literally less than 10 minutes long. She asked me, "Tell me about yourself," I did, and then she asked if I had any questions. I asked 3, which I figured was a good amount, and then she walked me out.

A week goes by, I sent a thank you note and a follow up email, nothing. No response. Finally got in touch with the HR rep who I had the first interview with. She says, "Yes, we have an update, can we call you later this afternoon?"

Waited all afternoon, they finally call and tell me they went with someone else.

God dammit. Soul crushing to come so far and then just fail, considering how well I thought I did on the first interview.

Similar to my telephone interview.
Interview part was over after ~10 Minutes.
"Tell me about yourself" .. I did .. I told some quite intereresting stories. I just got an "aha" as a response.
Sometimes I think they already made their decision for someone very early and they just do the rest of the interviews for legal / appearance reasons.

I have two interviews tomorrow, one for an Account Executive position and another to be a bank teller. I'm a bit nervous as I have become a stuttering mess in the last year and I don't think I am as articulate as I used to be, or maybe I am just now realizing how shoddy my communication skills really are.

In any case, I'm about to move so I really hope I can make some magic happen tomorrow.

I know that feel.

Applied for a job working in a diary lab. The first step was a pre-interview tests. Waited several months to hear back from that and had an interview earlier this year.

Went in and answered all of their questions (It's a state job, so they can't deviate from what is on their forms). Toured the lab and asked lots of questions.

Got a second interview set up a month later in March. These questions are more geared to the technical side of lab work. I tour the lab a second time and ask more about the experiments they perform and how they do them.

Silence for four months. I sent an e-mail just to inquire if the position was still open. They said it was still with HR.

A few days later, rejection.

Now I am back at square zero with no prospects and I have been out of grad school for a year.

If anyone is working in the animation industry in Vancouver, are you guys having difficulties with finding contract work? I'm becoming increasingly frustrated that none of the studios are responding.

Looking for a job is more than soul crushing. It is actually actively making me hate people. Perfectly qualified, tons of good references, and can't even get a reply from places. Applied weeks ago to multiple places and complete silence. Pisses me right off. This isn't difficult.

Hi guys! I have applied to a position in one of the big automotive supplier companies, and now I need to do an online test. I will get the link form a branch office in the USA. Does anybody have an idea what should I expect? Are these tests usually very technical? Should I expect standard interview questions or an intelligence test? I am assuming it will be timed, though I do not know for sure.

If anybody has done something similar what advice would you give?

EDIT: It is for an engineering trainee program. I would also appreciate if someone can link some good free online assessment tests that are often used.

What's your field?

The issue is that hiring isn't totally merit based sadly.

That's the purpose of interviews. Do you fit in? Do they like you? Can you prove your worth?

I GOT THE JOB! At an animal hospital, not only that, the head vet was so fucking impressed with me that he offered me MORE pay than either of my two JOBS. ON FULL TIME. OMFG.

Its a DREAM to come true!!! Then again I had TWO ins, as in two people internally who pushed my application up to the top.

I had an interview this morning. It lasted for about 8 minutes and the bulk of that time was used for me to ask questions. I was treated like a moron and I received the equivalent of an eyeroll when I confirmed to my interviewer that I was a poli sci grad who was seeking to transition into a sales position. The only reason I received an interview was because my old career adviser vouched for me, but I wasn't even given a chance to demonstrate my worth.

Hopefully my next interview will be better.

Had a phone interview for a great paying sales position at a company where everyone raves about the culture. I put in my due diligence and studied potential interview questions, but still blew it. It lasted about a half hour and I started off strong, but as the interview went on the questions got tougher at which point my nerves kicked in and I became rambly and non-committal with my answers.

I definitely learned from the experience and will make sure not to make the same mistakes again.

Protip: If you're interviewing for a sales position have an elevator pitch ready and waiting in your pocket and know the product well. Be confident and answer any surprise questions with gravitas, even if your answers are not the best.

Had an interview this afternoon after applying as a graphic designer/webdesigner to an offer (for webdesigner).

The guy seemed so tired and bored even before he met me which kind of pissed me off right from the start. He told me how he wanted to finish fast so he could go on holliday.
The interview was boring and the place don't seem to me for me as it was not really for a webdesigner (even though I replied to a webdesigner offer...). Why would they even do that....
It's also a huge kinda strict company which doesn't suit at all the creative environment I'm used to when working in a graphic design agency

The only good point is he said I didn't ask enough money for a position in this company as they didn't hire people for what I ask for. Like the minimum they pay people is 7 grand more than what I asked for...

I'm angry as I fucking hate looking for a job when only a ten of these fuckers dare to give an answer, even negative and it was basically my only job interview for now after 2-3 weeks of search.

I had a funny thing come up with a recruitment agency a bit ago. I live in Minnesota, FYI.

Seems like a really roundabout way of asking the same question that was banned.

I have an interview next Thursday for a great job with a pretty big bank, it's the direction I want to take my career and I'm thinking it'll pay well. They asked for an interview two days after I submitted my application.

I'm super surprised by how laid back the recruiter communicating with me is given the size of the company and that she is head of recruiting for my state. She asked me to come directly in to their main office for an interview, no phone interview or screening at all.

So I screwed up a job application very, very slightly. The subject heading was something like Fwd: Job Test because I forgot to change it after I had worked on a draft of the email earlier.

I sent a second dupilicate email with a proper heading and an explanation/apology for my error.

That's not gonna ruin my chances, right?

I'm always super paranoid about small things like that because I'm an anxious person but in reality no, it won't mess it up.

Like, I'm worried I have an interview next week but I'm paranoid because I'm going on vacation out of country for a week in early August. As if not being able to do a follow up interview during that week will totally blow my chances. In reality I could just schedule a follow up the week before or the week after and there is nothing to worry about. I hope. Just kidding, well kind of, I'm actually really anxious about this haha.

This is.... Insane. After all these years of you trying to find a new job this is what you've settled on? I will echo the statements of other members here this is a very bad resume. I am shocked with all the advice given to you on this forum over the years hasn't made you improve this.

- The internship is at a point of almost being irrelevant.
- Why are you listing hours per week?
- Why have you not been volunteering for opportunities in the field you want?
- Most of the Sports Authority stuff is filler.
- don't use acronyms people won't know.

Please do not ignore people's advice any longer. Your sister is wrong. What you've been doing is wrong. Your college counselor is wrong. You will be stuck in hell hole Florida for the rest of your life unless you start listening to others advice.

Also format is everything. My resume:

I pm'd you for template :)

That template looks very sleek and I love it, but I've always been under the impression--perhaps wrongly so--that you should include a brief blurb about yourself at the top, after your details but before the meat of the resume. Like maybe two or three short sentences about the type of person you are and your aspirations.

It could be an archaic way to present a CV but I've always included a blurb without problems. Then again, maybe that's the whole point of a covering letter and prospective employer would commend my originality. It might just be a cultural difference between the US and UK, but I'd be keen to try it that's for sure.

Any tips for applying to places that I don't currently live near? I'm trying to relocate and applying to lots of places out of state (some multiple states away). Is there anything I need to know about doing that?

Well I just finished my first month at a new assignment (Working as a contractor). I have not been lucky when in terms finding a permanent job on my own yet (im basically out of school) but I've been fortunate to find some contract work to get some experience. It's more of an IT job this time around as oppose to the junior software development I did the first go, but there's definitely opportunities there. I just have to be ready, keep coding when I can, gain some confidence, and hope for the best.

Ofcourse, there are down sides to contracting but it's seem to like me haha. Hope you all the best of luck and keep preparing for that opportunity.

Back on the job hunt again. I am employed. Trying to get a position in company I'm at, don't know if that will happen but it is the only position I want there for advancement. Looking outside of company as well. Will update with heart-breaking experiences often.

This is me except minus the trying in my current company. I've got my first interview since starting the job hunt, it's been around two weeks, this Thursday. I can tell they're trying to fill this fast and I've got a couple of more days to prepare. Super nervous since this is my first interview back in the game but I've got an in-person interview so can't complain!

I've had some decent luck hearing back. I include a cover letter with all my applications and make sure to mention how I want to relocate to whatever state and try to give a reason ( to be near coast, near family or friends that might not exist, better cost of living , something culture related etc)

If anyone is working in biotech and knows of good entry level stuff around where they are, feel free to let me know, because after four months with only one interview I'm getting somewhat desperate. Especially for experience in actual bio/genetics and whatnot.

Both a new Chipotle and a Panara Bread is being built close to where I live and they are accepting applications. Which one of the two is the least stress free for a weekend job?

Since I'll be starting practical nursing school soon, I need something a little more easy going than my current job aka something where I'm not subject to whatever the weather is outside or to constant physical labor.

Both jobs will offer a different kind of stress: dealing with the public. Good luck with that

Just had an in person interview today and it was really anticlimactic. It was the 3rd interview and I talked to 6 people over 4 hours. It's so hard to read people some times and you have no idea what the competition is like.
