Applying for jobs is exhausting and soul-crushing

So I'm assuming this thread is the general "applying and interviewing for positions" thread? If that's so, I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions as I break into a job search coming up very soon, but for now I was wondering if you guys could answer my one question (keep in mind I've only had one job through college and it was not a typical scenario getting it): if you know that a position is there, in my case an internship at my college that was revealed to me by my adviser, would it be best to email the director of the program asking if he wants my resume or to just attach it to my first email? I'm not sure if it's too "forward" in a situation like this to just simply throw it out there in the first contact I have with this person.

Is asking for a copy of a university degree normal during the application process? First time I've encountered this. They also asked for a copy of my highschool diploma.

Put it out there, can't afford to be timid in situations like that. Although being too forward is a thing I don't think you're crossing any lines here.

Sounds successful. In my interview, I pre-empted the interviewer and HR by looking on Linkedin and knowing who I was going to be interviewed by. I was introduced to her with just her first name, but having looked her up, I knew her last name. She was very impressed by that. Also, my knowledge shone during the interview as I'm sure I asked questions that none of my competitors every bothered to ask. I wish you well on this. Don't forget the follow up email. Send it today and thank them. You appear to have been interviewed by two people. Look them up on Linkedin or something, look at their individual accomplishments and tailor response emails to them individually. Just because you leave, that doesn't mean that you aren't still being interviewed. So then, on like next Tuesday or Wednesday, email them and ask if it would be alright to add them as a contact on Linkedin. You are just trying to keep up consistent dialogue with them because they more they talk to you, the less amount of time they are talking to someone else. It's pandering to an extent, but you have to play the game.

I hope so! But yeah I followed up with an email at lunch today. I was told I'd receive feedback sometime next week and contacted for a possible final stage interview (if successful and depending on how the other interviews go) the week after.

I guess I'll call up Friday or something (you know, before the weekend) to see what's up.

I had an interview over a week ago on the 20th and it's been radio silence ever since. I thought it went well; the interviewer didn't ask any tough questions and my history seemed to match up with what they were looking for. Up to this point they've been very quick about advancing the process to the next step. I got my screening call shortly after applying, that led right into my design test, and they responded the day after I submitted my test with wanting to set up an interview. Now it's been over a week without hearing from them and the outlook is grim. I have already sent them a post-interview thank you note last week, but no response from that. Normally I would try to get back on the horse but looking for openings is just taking to all the other positions I applied to already but haven't heard back from at all.

The thread title is way too appropriate.

It can be tough. Sometimes hiring managers do get busy. Keep applying and connecting with others.

I'm not sure what is a boutique place, but I assume that means a really small place like mine? We are in IT, Business Intelligence area in fact, but yeah, I'm gonna start looking, nothing stresses me more than lack of stability

Thanks Agent, I knew that I needed to start looking, but sometimes you need someone else to tell you that what you knew is right.

fake edit: we had an meeting, like 10 minutes ago. We are not going to be paid anymore because we can become partners with the company. PARTNERS!!!

now to hit the pavement again, to update my CV

You hit the nail on the head when I mentioned boutique. I've been beating my best friend over the head to leave for years. He's been in the same job for 5 years. Instead of a raise, they just increase his workload and placate him with bullshit bonuses. He's too comfortable.

what the fuck is up with companies not posting the salary for open positions? Shit drives me nuts.

Know your worth. That's the most important thing. Companies will try to lowball the fuck out of you if they can.

So, after I got rejected from both Hotels (even the one where I had such a good feeling about), I might go back to school after all.

I luckily have a very good friend with good connections who is currently trying to get me into this class (school year starts next monday). I have my doubts that business economist is something for me, but I would automatically be back in the dependents' co-insurance, I would have at least a year without stress to apply for something better, I would have something on my CV and I would also get financial support (Bafög in Germany).

The benefits definitely outweigh.

Us-GAF, where is the best place to look online for jobs there? I do not live in the States but I would like to see if I can get any contact from abroad.

I'm an engineer with a few years of experience in Pharmaceutical companies and I'm tired of earning peanuts in my country and dealing with a rotten job market.

I know that is almost impossible to get a job from abroad, but trying is free.

A meta site like Indeed.com will likely be your best start unless you have a specific skillset. With you, I'd try http://www.dice.com/ for some engineering jobs as well.

I have a friend working for like 10 years now in a small-ish place, but they have like 20-30 employees, not 2 like us, and yeah, he stays there because he's confortable, even when I know he could be earning a lot more elsewhere because he is a damn good programmer.

It sees like today we are going to have another meeting to see what happens, We had a meeting this friday and it sounded like we would be freelancers instead of having steady income, wich sounds great, except that we haven't had a new project in like two months.

I find funny that the owner complains that the company costs too much for him, but at the same time he can buy a brand new, fully equipped Mazda6(at the same week he fired our third developer because he couldn't keep paying him) and take his two daughters in a three weeks vacation to Canada

The only calls and emails I get are from tech recruiters like Robert Half.
I wanted to find a job on my own, should I just go with them? Anyone ever used them specifically?
I'm supposed to contact one guy this afternoon but feel I should let all the applications I sent out have some more "time" or whatever.

Quite nervous, it has been a long time since I had a face to face interview. Worst of all, they called me in the morning telling me they want to interview me at midday, and I went to work with a polo shirt and jeans. No chance to return to my home and change my clothes.

Gonna go since it is close to my workplace but for sure I won't get hired.

Edit: same answer as always, we will send your CV to Human Resources for the second interview. Not expecting the call.

With my bachelor's degree and a long but not impressive work history my only job is 12/he manual labor. I didn't think it would start like this but I didn't get lucky I guess. It'll let me live and continue to search but I'm really starting to feel the soul crushing part.

Absolutely go with the recruiter, why wouldn't you? The employer pays them, not you. It's the best way to get a job short of a personal intervention.

I was headhunted for my latest job that I start in three weeks, it was smooth as hell

I don't know what you have/haven't tried, but when I stopped using job search sites and started browsing LinkedIn I started getting a lot more responses. Even when I first started looking for jobs after graduating a few years ago, the responses I got that actually led to interviews were the result of applying to the company directly. I also find that recruitment agencies will call/email me about jobs that I have zero interest in. Now, three years later, it's no different.

There's also the fact that many more people (potentially hundreds) will be applying to a job if it's listed on a job site, compared to maybe just a few dozen (or less) if it's not. And while I realise YMMV, I've found this to be pretty accurate thus far.

Does anyone here know more about Applicant Tracking Systems? Is it really bad to format a CV using tables?

Take the tables out, there isn't an guarantee that the system will read it correctly. I preferred them for mine but I was told this by someone that works in HR.

Job searching is rage inducing/
So much fire in my soul.

Yes this is true. When you fill in some applications online and upload your resume its always a good idea to look over it after you upload. The employers website will show you what the hiring manager or whatever will see before you submit everything and the tables usually always list the wrong things or exclude important information. But for some reason it never fucks up the general info like your name and number ect. :p

One month of applying online to numerous companies, no replies. One college job fair and I already have 2 interviews setup...

I wonder if my online applications were even read by human eyes.

Lots of HR departments have the resume scanned for keywords before ever having it read, so most of your applications probably weren't read if you didn't including every keyword they were looking for.

This should be in the OT, if you're having issues do whatever you can to get in front of people.

Well, had a pretty great interview last Thurs. Met with my would be boss for 30 minutes, and her boss for 45 minutes. Felt real good leaving it.

Only negative was that she told me I would hear back in 7-10 days, and that they were early in the interview process. Kind of seemed code for, "You were okay, but we want to see if we can get someone better and then if we cant maybe we will call you." Feels like if I really nailed it, they would have tried to make something happen in a few days with an offer.

Guess I will keep my fingers crossed.

Had an interview yesterday for a front desk position. Seemed to go good except the one thing that gets brought up almost every interview.. I've moved quite a bit. I was with my last job for two years but transferred a few times due to opportunity. They saw this as a negative due to stability.

Kinda sucks to keep getting judged on something that I am done doing. They also had an assessment to do on paper with 50 questions in 12 minutes. Think I bombed it but we'll see.

Back to applying to everything on indeed

Have an interview for a Microbiologist in Training position on Thursday. Crossing my fingers.
So, in addition to this, I started working at Chick-fil-A last week. I immediately decided that this was not something I could continue to do for months in case it took that long to get my first career job. The store is too small, serving 7 million a year when it was built to serve 2.8 million. I would not have taken the job had I known this fact, so I went today and got a job with a local smoothie place. So not only am I leaving my current job after just a week (their busiest week of the year, at that,) I could potentially leave this new job incredibly soon as well. I hope I get this aformentioned Microbiologist position, but I'm a little worried about this precedent I'm setting. At least they aren't career jobs.

Don't worry, you don't even need to put them on the resume.

Right. Like I said, I would actually love to be leaving this new job after a week, since that means I'm getting started in my career. I feel a little bad about leaving my current position so soon and at such a bad time on such short notice, but I just have to do the best thing for me.

Have you guys tried craigslist? I got 2 interviews in 2 weeks thru craigslist. Lots of great entry level positions on there. Also for people unfamiliar with excel, practice using it and watch youtube tutorials as a lot of clerical/data entry positions require intermediate knowledge of excel.

For people who recently graduated and have little experience, try a staffing agency/recruiters and apply for temp positions. My friend graduated with a degree in political science, but his only job experience was as a server. He quickly got temp jobs through craigslist and built up his resume. He worked nights and only made like $11-$12 hourly and that's with a degree. After a few months, he got a job with a law firm doing clerical work before going to law school. I was in the same boat as him. I graduated with only restaurant experience on my resume; never did an internship. I managed to get a temp position with the state after 6 months of job hunting and applied for a full time position with them after 5 months. Now I can finally put some non-restaurant experience on my resume and look for better jobs. Keep looking guys, you will find something.

Just touching upon this advice again as I'm feeling anxious..! When would actually be a good time to call them to find out if I'm still in contention? I originally thought I'd call on Friday, but here in the UK we had Monday off (public holiday) and they said they were still doing interviews this week. Is Friday too early? On the other hand, it's that whole 'pandering' thing you mentioned.

Also, should I ask to speak to one of my interviewers directly or the contact I have in HR?

Had an interview today and felt like I did well. Got to talk to 5 different people and took an assessment so I guess must be doing something right since it took 2 hours. Hopefully I get called back for the second group interview since I've been informed it's between me and one other candidate.

Was really optimistic about this job -- got referred within days -- but, naturally, another rejection. I realistically have nine months left in my current city before I need to move back home with my parents.

I'll be 33 then.

I have 1 month :x
2 months if I go into overdraft, but that's probably a bad idea.

I only need $500/month to live, how quick do you guys think I can find part-time work (in Vancouver)? Or should I bite the bullet, tell my landlady to put up an ad, and move back home in October?

That's my area too.

Good luck dallow_bg. I think that I don't want to stay in this area, because I like the mental challenge, but that is the only part Iike, so the day ended up being like one rewarding hour, seven hours of dealing with crappy team leaders or crappier clients. Also, in my country you can only find BI jobs in 3 cities, and I don't want to move, so that forces me to change areas again(and that is kinda fine, I found in this BI job that I'm more of an sysadmin type than a developer type)

Anyways, I sent several applications, I'll let you know when I get an interview

Color me surprised, got the second call. Another interview tomorrow, but now with HR. Wondering what they have in store.
I just accepted a job and my second interview included HR. It was more intense than the first one, she asked if I had any questions (everyone usually asked that anyway). But she was taking notes on what I as asking. I guess she was more experienced in interviewing? Just have some really good questions about the role (my future boss was in the second interview with HR)

Of course ymmv

I was accepted into school and I will start on Monday. I feel so relieved. While it isn't the thing I wanted, it will certainly be better than what I went through the last couple of months.

A big thank you to every single person in this thread that helped me this year. You are all wonderful and I know things will get better sooner or later. You all deserve to have a job again. <3

Just got back from the interview. Yeah, the interviewer was asking stuff like your weakness, your strengths, what hard choices you had to do in your life and stuff like that. She was also asking me if I had questions.

Overall not bad, with the exception of my writing (my calligraphy is awful, on top of that, my left hand is still injured). Now need to hunt some documents.

Edit: wait, I probably made a mistake without thinking back then; she asked my religion, I said atheist. In a Latin American country. That's it, I'm done for.

Good news though, got another interview today in a place I really like. Hopefully this one goes well. Need to think twice before answering.

After sending my resume to the director of the program I want to intern in at my school, he responded saying that he wanted to meet with me sometime tomorrow. I obviously emailed him back letting him know my availability and asked him to provide a time and location for the meeting. What I'm having trouble with at this point is what to wear. Both my gf and mother (maybe sad, but she's one of my only resources) think I'll be ok with what they call "church casual" wear for the meeting, considering it's not an interview or anything. I'm thinking of wearing some khakis and a nice button down shirt, but does anyone think I should go more formal? I mean, it's a school internship program in an IT department, so I'm sure the work environment isn't anything business-like.

Move back home for a short time and find a part-time gig. If your parents are willing to help for a short time, take advantage of it. Adding money to savings is worth more than pride.

As for me, I applied for a job months ago. Got called for a phone interview with recruiter a couple of weeks ago, then the hiring manager a few days later. The hiring manager indicated that they would be calling me up for an in-person interview a few days later. I never heard anything back except for a canned email response that they chose someone else. Really frustrating because during the time after the interview with the hiring manager, I sent a thank you email and she responded saying they were trying to line up a day for me to come in, then 3 days later I hear they hired someone else. I know that is just how it works, but why lie?

I think your idea is right, it's an internship, and it sounds like it's more like an informal meeting more than an straight interview, so go with khakis and a button down shirt. And good luck!

I forgot how much this sucks. I just saw a job posting for an unpaid internship that called for "an experienced software developer." What the heck?

So I got a steady job somewhere, and it's in my field! I got the call earlier today and accepted straight away. They said they would send me an e-mail to confirm but I haven't gotten it yet. While we agreed on money, they're giving me more than I asked for, and when I should come in to start, I feel nervous due to the fact they haven't sent that confirmation e-mail yet. Part of me thinks someone is messing with me as a result.

God, it feels good to know I'll have a steady paycheck coming in instead of being a freelancer and never knowing when I'm getting paid.

So I got called in for a second group panel interview after my first went so well though I'm kinda nervous. I've never actually done a panel interview and assume it's just multiple people interviewing you instead of just one. I'm just wondering what I would ask them.

Would salary and benefits be acceptable to discuss or should I wait until the offer stage?

Totally bombed a phone interview

They asked me why I was interested in the role of packaging designer trainee and I replied

"I've always been interested in packaging design and I think I did well in my material and process course"

The interviewer then said "did you just say I think I did well"

Then they asked me what I didn't like about my old job and I talk something about too much red tape >_<

Finally they asked me if I have any questions and I said " Since this is a trainee position, will I be expected to have...ummm...er...(3 seconds later) an education on this subject matter"

WTF? o_O

So embarassing!

Urrggh, I nailed the online application but just totally messed up the online assessment. Running out of the time so had to guess my way through the last few questions.

It also seemed way over the top for the role, here's hoping the experience I have will maybe make them overlook how poor I feel I've done
