Arcade Fire announce "The Suburbs"

Yeah, there isn't a single song that I skip or don't fully enjoy. That's a first for an Arcade Fire album for me. Such a perfectly constructed album.

I'm also enjoying Ra Ra Riot - The Orchard. If you like The Suburbs it's a nice accompaniment.

Haven't heard that Ra Ra Riot album yet, but I'll check it out..need to take a break from this album for a little bit.

I still think the first half is superior, but the second half has picked up for me. Deep Blue, especially, fits the definition of a "grower."

i really hated this album when i first heard it.

i kept on giving it chance after chance and it never felt it was going to click but, eventually, it did. it requires a whole lot of investment, i don't think it has the immediate accessibility or instant gratification of, say, funeral, but it's a big epic record. it definitely seems to work as a whole. suffice to say, it's a shit-ton better than neon bible.

sprawl ii is the best track of the album imo, good on p4k.

It's good.

so the album has grown a bit, but I still feel its slumps a bit in the middle, and I'm not a fan of Month of May - particularly the first half. The Suburbs (continued) however is gorgeous and I wish it went on a few minutes longer! The last 1/3 of the album is fabulous actually.

Might cut out a track or two in the middle.

i think i'd cut month of may and rococo to make the album a bit leaner, even despite the latter being an awesome put down of hipsters.

Feel exactly the same as i did with Gorillaz last album. Meh, decent, but hugely overyhyped and overrated, it's alright yeah, but does NOT deserve the praise it gets. I think it's mostly due to hype.

The difference being that groillaz album was awful.

yeah, I have to agree the Gorillaz album was insanely over hyped. I listened to it when it first came out, liked it. Then mountains and mountains of praise fell on it and I have no idea why. Much better albums this year (The Suburbs including one).

Plastic Beach? It had some pretty mediocre tracks but it was pretty good. I still like Demon Days better though.

It may be boring to say, but The Suburbs (the song) is just a great song. It's probably my favourite on the album with Ready To Start, Rococo, Deep Blue, Sprawl II and Suburbs Continued.

The only songs I don't really care for are City With No Children and Month Of May.

I just preordered it on Amazon :D

Seeing them in about two weeks near Atlanta, they're playing a show with Spoon.

Really excited :D

I'm loving it. Neon Bible is still their best release. I think the album is a little all over the place. It should really be about 12 songs long or so.

Half Light I is just so beautiful...

Love the album, but something I noticed.. the tune/melody in Half Light I is very similar to the tune in How it Ends by Devotchka.

Check it out: http://devotchka.net/

the player on the top has the song in it's list.

The songs themselves are quite different, but it sounds like they dressed up the melody. It's more obvious near the end of Half Life when the trumpets start playing.

At least I think so.

:/

Oh yeah, I went to FYE today and I actually saw a copy of this. It was like 15 bucks though, so I decided to wait. I got Best Coast's superior debut instead:D

enjoy your songs about making out with boys.

bought the physical cd today. wish it wasn't one of the slip in ones, much prefer a plastic case. the different covers is a cool idea though.

They were so damn awesome live last night at Osheaga.

Yeah I liked their show alot Saturday. They sure were better than the Yawnational, and about on par with Pavement (if only because they only played for 1 hour). It was my first exposure to the Suburbs and I liked it enough.

Speaking of pavement, what was up with the moron slugging malkmus with a beer?

What's the actual package like? I'm thinking of buying it just because the artwork is cool.

the artwork on the covers, inside and out, and in the lyrics insert is all very very nice looking indeed, but the package itself feels a bit cheap.

That was really stupid. At least he got called out and booed heavily.

Pavement was pretty forgettable actually and I like them.

Edit: people abbreviate Pitchfork to p4k :lol

Holy man.

At first I was meh.
Then, it's catching on.
Now I LOVE it.

Such a grower.

Can't wait to get this on wax. Tempted to get all of the covers. :lol

Agreed. I hated it on first listen but today I found myself tearing up like some kind of giant hairy baby. The Suburban War is such a brilliant centre for the album, all the themes come out through it and it has a wonderful melody running through it too. Definite contended for AotY.

It grows like crazy. Listening to it once through before making judgment is a crime.
I'd like to say this is bullshit and it's just fans trying to justify a arguably disappointing album. But no no it actually is great, and really does grow with every listen.:D

I'm not going to contradict my previous rant and post an opinion after one and a half listens, but I will say this album reminds me of watching MTV every day for like six hours during the summer in the '80s. The immediate image I get is the Moon Man and flag.

Can any other really old people here picture Mark Goodman or Martha Quinn announcing most of these songs as "coming up in the next half-hour"?

The MP3 album's only $4 at Amazon.

I love you, Jeff Bezos.

Amazon mp3s are 320kbps (of course)?

Asking because I bought a Spoon album off Amazon and itunes registers the songs as between 200 for some and 250 for others (and inbetween for the others).

I didn't hate it on first listen, but I definitely agree with the rest of your points. Suburban War is especially brilliant.
