Arcade games that are impossible to beat on one credit.

Smash TV would have to be one of them.

You would need an incredible combination of concentration, reflexes, knowledge of the game and outright luck to survive that long.

Any others? (ones that loop forever obviously don't count)

I'd say SmashTV is one of them, but the top of the leaderboard on XBLA beat level 1 and 2 without continuing...

Only one more level to go.

Yeah, the Metal Slugs are good candidates...

I don't think it's possible to finish X-Men/Ninja Turtles/Turtles in Time/Simpsons/etc. in just one credit. There are too many instances where you simply must take damage to deal damage, especially to bosses.

EDIT: Guantlet definitely is impossible. Your health deteriorates too fast to win it without extra credits.

Which is cheap/poor game design really.

Those were some of my favorite games as a kid. Used to be my favorite genre. Too bad the genre has never survived the transition to 3D. I wish a quality developer would try reviving it.....

I would say Smash TV too... I used to have fond memories of the game.

Robotron is my all-time favorite arcade game and my most played X-Box 360 game... anyways... I loved Smash TV because of Robotron...

But after replaying Smash TV, while it is a Robotron clone... it is too repetitive and by that I mean the rooms are too time consuming... in Robotron you spend 30-40 seconds on a room and move on... in Smash TV you fight a room for minutes... it is too long and becomes boring...

They should have made Smash TV with more rooms and less time in the room. Plus in Robotron all of the enemies are on the screen at once... clean house and move on... In Smash TV the doors keep opening and new enemies appear. I was bored beating the game.

The Metal Slugs can definitely be done on one credit. I haven't personally done it myself, but I can sometimes reach the final stage of Metal Slug X without losing a life.

House of the Dead?

I used to be able to do it with 2, but never worked hard enough at it to get it down to one. I'm positive it can be done.

I'd also say games like Operation: Wolf are impossible.

Neverending games like Mr. Do or Pac-Man.

Actually you can finish them by scoring so high that the game glitches out.

I still say Guantlet is the practically the only one you can't finish by any means without adding coins (that I can think of).

Starblade (no way to restore your shields, other than quarters)
Crime Fighters (cheapest bosses ever!)

You can hit-and-run most of the bosses with impunity if you play as Storm (extra range with that staff).

Gauntlet and Gauntlet II didn't have endings, so don't try. :lol

I could beat House of the Dead without continuing. That was also after playing it day after day a few years ago. You start to know your route by heart. Final boss took some time to get down pat.

Gauntlet 1 only had 100 levels and Gauntlet II had a dragon to defeat at the end. So they are beatable (but impossible).

they all can be done, just look for speed runs. the only exception are like sports games where you need to purchase quarters/seasons.

Robocop: I used to be able to get to the last stage on one credit back when I was like 9 years old, but when I got to said last stage, I had to use three more quarters, just to move poor Robo through an area full of stationary lazer shooters, moving platforms and elevators and shit that I don't remember. The lasers took a lot of health off of Robo, and it made it extremely hard to get through on one quarter.

The funny part is that after I got through that "elevator crap", I could finish the rest of the level (including the last boss) really easily............. >_>

Other Game:

Either Strikers 1945, or Strikers 1945 2 on Hard Difficulty mode. Although, I saw some Gamest magazines that showed some dudes that had cleared the game on one credit, and they had Patterned Maps and shit for every stage including the 2-1---2-8 stages, which were basically "insane" stages that had "crap coming at light speed, and every thing that you destroy would leave behind like at least 3 extra fast bullets to have to avoid.....

.....it was basically Chaos!

While I haven't done it, I have nearly completed it on one credit. I have however seen my brother do it on multiple occasions. The game is very logical and pattern based and there is never a point where you must take damage.

I used to complete SNES Smash TV without using continues.

I have beaten the TMNT 1 arcade game on a single credit. It's pretty easy too. I know the score you have triggers some sort of difficulty switch in the game. You can use this to really make the game harder even when you have the game's difficulty jacked up. If I recall correctly, it resets when you die though. It's worth doing just for fun. You can do this on the first level too!

For example, pick Leornardo and stand about an inch away from the white ninjas that throw daggers at you. Tap the attack button the moment the dagger is about to hit you. This is best done when the white ninja is the only enemy on the screen. You get a point for each dagger broken. Do this for about 5-10 minutes. After like 250-300 points or so, kill the guy and slowly walk forward. You'll see like 15-20 guys coming at you! It's pretty funny, but you can just jump kick them all. Oh yeah, this makes the bosses harder since they have the stamina of like 4-players so if you are playing by yourself, the bosses will take awhile to kill. :)

All the bosses in the game have patterns though. Like getting Rocksteady stuck on either the left-hand or right-side of the screen while you stay almost directly underneath them. You can them jump kick them on the way down when you reach his head and the kick will hit twice instead of once. Just move out of the way before he kicks you and just wash-rinse-repeat. On some bosses, like Bebop or the Rock Soldier, you can swing once, then walk up or down to make them miss their attack. You will have to jump over them while holding up or down every now or then, but they can't hit you. This works on Krang...so it makes fighting him a piece of cake. The jump kick method works on Shredder too, but since he multiplies, it makes the risk of getting instantly killed much greater. The Bebop/Rock Soldier method works on him too, but there is a sweet spot where you can swing at him yet he can't hit you! Funny thing is that there is a preset number of times he can multiply, so if kill all his clones, you can easily use the exploit I just stated to easily kill him.

That is how I usually go about beating TMNT 1 w/o dying. :)

Anything made by Midway fits the bill here (in particular, the games that don't let you continue, like Joust)

They should have made Smash TV with more rooms and less time in the room. Plus in Robotron all of the enemies are on the screen at once... clean house and move on... In Smash TV the doors keep opening and new enemies appear. I was bored beating the game.

Total Carnage basically takes the same gameplay but does away with the rooms, making it so that you're constantly on the move. Makes for a much more exciting game (still lame that you need two players to get the best ending, though)

Hell no, not one more to go. Its one more stage to go, then the 10 minute level 'o' death! Then the final boss. Beating the game on one credit, I think is impossible.

NBA Jam

You had to put in credits after every quarter. I liked how Run 'n' Gun did it, if you had the lead at the end of the quarter, you got the next one free.

I was going to mention that in my post, but I couldn't remember if it was NJ or Hangtime. Thanks

This isn't too difficult once you learn where the ninjas, sorcerers and purple mummies spawn. I have beaten this game at least a dozen times on 1 credit, but it definitely wasn't easy in the beginning.

I've beaten a fair amount of gun games on a single credit. It's all about being accurate and having stamina. Especially with the Time Crisis titles.

Robocop is another game I remember beating on one credit. It's been awhile, but I remember a few things making the game really easy. I know that punching the motorcyclists would make the bike explode and you would be just fine, if you timed it right. I also remember punching the EDs right in the face while they were off screen, then shooting them for an easy victory. The last level was a joke. Take damage on purpose till you were about to die, then just shoot the boss once and he just died.

The easiest arcade game ever is Golden Axe. I finished it on my first ever try, and put in 3 credits total. I don't know why they did that. It wasn't a dipswitch setting either, they were all that easy.

i used to be able to beat black tiger on a credit also, the people i hung out with would then compete for the highest score on one credit.

Mad props to all the Black Tiger fans in this thread.

Black Tiger freakin rules. A classic and one of my favorite games. Yes, I also agree what people said earlier about Smash TV. This game is pretty much impossible to beat on 1 credit. Also, agree with the person who said that this game can get boring, as the levels do last forever. I much prefer Robotron, as the levels are quick. Robotron is insanely difficult to beat (is there even an ending?) also.

I put a lot of time into Gauntlet back in the day. With four experienced players, it becomes a psychological mindgame--it's plainly obvious that in order for all four players to survive long-term they need to work together, but the game constantly offers delicious short-term rewards for stabbing other players in the back. It's pure genius, really.

Anyway, I used to play regularly in a team of four with a friend of mine who would always play the Elf, and he was an expert at turning team members against each other. While they'd be fighting (SHOTS HURT OTHER PLAYERS!) or working away from each other, slaying monsters on opposite sides of the board, he'd be using the superfast Elf to sweep up all the food on screen (four players equals four times the food). If he played with three newbies, by the time they ran out of quarters and gave up he usually had more health than he did when he put in his first quarter.

As for me--I knew Gauntlet's maps so well that other kids would pay for me to play so that I could act as a tour guide through the dungeons. It was pretty sweet.

I used to be able to complete that game on a single credit as well. There were various dip switch settings though. The one I used to play gave you one life and three hit points.

I used to be able to complete Double Dragon 1 on a single credit using almost only the elbow attack. The stupid random part with the push blocks is the only thing that would sometimes take my coin.

I was able to get to the part in Rygar where if you were to die you could no longer continue. I think it was level 22 or something out of 30?
