Those were some of my favorite games as a kid. Used to be my favorite genre. Too bad the genre has never survived the transition to 3D. I wish a quality developer would try reviving it.....

Isn't The Warriors in the same spirit of those, just obviously more violent? I've heard it's a great beat-em-up.

It was Koei.

They made Dynasty Warriors.

It worked.

ikafuckingruga. yeah, i've seen the japanese videos of crazy bastards owning the hell out of the game, but those are godlings, and not mere mortals like us. Shit, most shmups are impossible to beat on one token, without having invested hundreds of tokens beforehand.
