Are Microsoft quitting the console hardware market?

Are Microsoft discontinuing Xbox consoles?

Over the past few weeks and months now there's been various reports on here of people around the world being unable to find Xbox consoles at retail.

That coupled with yesterdays reports that the handheld Xbox has now been canned, could the XSX DE end up being the final piece of Microsoft hardware bearing the "Xbox" name?

With Microsoft experiencing huge sales due to the massive PS5 user base and the possibility of replicating this on Switch 2, do Microsoft even need Xbox anymore?

They may launch it but worldwide availability might not be guaranteed.

Holding onto my xbox, if its last one I can buy. Hopefully it lasts a long time. Though it has seen a ton of use.

They have resources to succeed but need to get rid of Phil Spencer. I have no idea what he is blackmailing Satya with or maybe Satya has no clue about gaming.

Unofficially based on the decisions they have made, it feels like they have quit the console hardware space.

I don't think but at the same time they've screwed themselves and destroyed there brand reputation/image by going third party. Now i can't see anyone buying there next piece of hardware, because there's 0 point honestly. They went all in on gamepass gamepass gamepass and it's blown up in there faces and sent them down into the abyss where they'll never escape.

Probably. They want to be the Netflix of video games, and Netflix doesn't produce hardware.

Microsoft has always been a software company with mostly mid hardware products. It makes sense to focus on what they think they do better.

I have no idea what they are thinking over there. Im not sure if they have a clear plan themselves.

They could be doing what they did with og Xbox where they pull the plug like a year before new hardware and go all in like they did with the 360, or they could be folding hardware after seeing all the money they are making from pc and playstation.

I think they will give one more "generation" a try but the whole situation seems volatile.

They still have a hardcore fanbase who buys their console and are habitual of their interface.

I believe they won't run behind power anymore and keep investing in Xbox Series S kind of consoles for reach.

I voted yes, because it's clear Microsoft has been making their own hardware increasingly optional over the years. At this point, it feels intentional. If the trend continues, I think we'll see one final hardware release, probably just a Series X refresh, followed by a shift toward a handheld device. After that, I wouldn't be surprised if they step away from traditional set-top box consoles altogether.

I dont think MS would set those prices without some reason.

That with stock also drying up worldwide.

They've either given up on consoles or they've given up on this gen and they are full steam ahead on next gen.

None of us really have any idea. That's why it's kinda silly to even entertain these conversations around MS and Xbox.

I'm not voting because the only constant with Microsoft is their irrational behavior. Every time it looked like Windows Phone was dead, they'd pop back up with a new version or a new NOKIA flagship phone. Until they eventually didn't.

I wouldn't put it past them to try and stay in the hardware market at least one more generation.

Regardless, if Microsoft Game Studios wants to be a success, they need to rip the off the bandaid and go day one multiplatform across the board. Not this timed exclusive stuff. Games like Indiana Jones and Avowed would have fared much better, sales wise, if they had been on all platforms on day one. And look at Starfield… had it launched on PlayStation day one, it probably would have gotten a ton of sales like it did on PC before people really saw how shallow the total package was. NOW if they bring it to PlayStation, given over a year of negativity, it'll probably land with a dull thud.

Latest reports says that they are still going full speed ahead on a Series X successor.
But who knows? They seem to have too many things cooking right now. And when they added PlayStation's 80m userbase for their games I can't imagine they feel any pressure. Once they include Switch 2 in the porting strategy the money coming from Xbox users will be a rounding error on their financial reports.

seems so, but don't know if the future say otherwise. but the signs are here already.
i wonder if they should chase portable trend in the future like rumor said earlier.

For sure. Why should they still waste their time on it. They showed for some time already that they have no interest in the console market and don't care where they sell their games. I wouldn't be surprised if their is a next Xbox, but it will be probably fron some third party company and will be nothing else than a console like box that can play PC games.

Uh, this has been crystal clear for probably 2 years now. The pivot to GP engagement and cloud, the ABK purchase, and then the release of former exclusives on other consoles. If that, coupled with the actual things MS said, didn't make it clear they're leaving custom hardware, nothing will I guess.

They've copied Sega in many ways, but pulling a breakup statement like with dreamcast seems to be a step Xbox doesn't want to take. Pride biting them presumably.

So instead of a clear breakup, they're just ghosting the market place for hardware. Read the room, recognise it for what it is.

Personally I've been expecting it for longer than that. I'm surprised there was a series X at all, but after Xbone, it was clear that series had to return to 360 levels of market relevance for there to be a future for Xbox custom hardware consoles. That didn't happen, so no future.

Xbox Badged PC - sure. Maybe even an "xbox compliant" spec, and badge for 3rd party PC manufacturers to stick on their box.

But custom silicon and OS? Nah, those days are joever. That was obvious when in the followup to the sea of theives/ hifi rush / pentiment announcement, they started talking about play anywhere and support for library migration going forward.

That was preparing people for how to get them off of Xbox hardware - for some reason no one really listened to what MS was telling them . At that point they were saying there was no need for Xbox console because you get to take your stuff to PC.

IMO 100% no.

They just know that their Series consoles cost too much to manufacture if you know you won't sell them... I heard in Europe they stopped to have them in stock (I can confirm in France it's hard to find an Xbox in store).

But I believe in the rumors saying that the next Xbox will arrive sooner than excpected and that it'll read Steam games. Valve tried Steam machines and it failed so for them a partnership with MS would be a big win, and for MS having Steam on their Xbox machine would be an INSANE win, Sony won't be able to prevent their 1st parties (Spider-Man, TLOU, etc) to be playable on Xbox.

I dunno, I can see this happening.

Advantage to go prebuild xbox-pc route vs new console- it wont be constrained to 250W console form factor(even ps5pr0 that has biggest powerdraw of all consoles to date has exact 240W limit it can eat, measured by DF).

It could mean even if same/similar cpu/gpu is put in both ps6 and that pre-build xbox pc like, on xbox side it can have much higher clocks, like 30-40% higher, ofc it can also mean u dont even need to go for same/similar specced low power hardware, u can go for much bigger/powerhungry option which will have total not 250 but 500-600W powerdraw, which means it will give visibly more performance.
Hell xbox could go with nvidia card this time around even, who really knows.

Lets just check how it would look today, aka both sony and microsoft going with whats avaiable for them at this very moment:

CPU side both would go with 9800x3d, just sony would have to downclock it to around 4GHz.

GPU wise best sony can go with, and thats coz they only got amd to chose from on top of total 250W powerdraw- is this:
If u check how that gpu looks powerdraw wise(220W) its basically close to max it can be for console form factor(u still gotta have decent cpu/ssd/vram etc which will likely draw rest of the 250W powerlimit).
Now xbox could have 2 or even 3 different versions with weakest being 5060ti 16gigs, midrange(thats still 17% avg perf above amd's card ) would be 5070ti, and elite/premium option would be 2x stronger from ps6 5090...(maybe with tiny downclock, but still 2x performance in raster, over 2x in rt/ai upscaling capabilities) with some hefty pricetag of 1999 usd?

Ofc its pure speculation, we dont know how its gonna look in 2027/2028, by then amd will likely have highend card avaiable and who knows maybe nvidia drops the ball even more, what we know for sure by then 3nm process node will be avaiable for big dies, aka console APU(250-400 mm² ) and even bigger desktop pc cards( here they will easily break 500 mm² maybe even 600 mm²- 4090 has 609 and that was already on 5nm node back in 2nd half of 2022, 5090 has 750 but that required very mature 5nm node).

What interests me in all of this is where Microsoft is planning to find the replacement for the millions (presumably?) of Game Pass subs on XSX & XSS consoles. Cloud or Win11 handhelds aren't for everyone. Are people expected to switch to PC?

Obviously the logical solution would be to offer GP on PlayStation, but Sony isn't going to allow it, at least not in its 'full' form.

It's obvious they're soft-pedaling the hardware market, they're handing out little to no stock, their future plans aren't clear, etc. Look elsewhere, and Sony has been working hard for years with its collaboration with AMD and its Project Amethyst for the PS6.

The middling, drawn-out death of Windows Phone is exactly what I expect for the death of Xbox.

No, they are more successful than ever.

Fans of Sony's PlayStation hardware would love to see another competitor gone for some reason, even at the expense of their own console experience.

I think they are making kore revenue than they ever have, right? Exponentially in fact.

Working with Microsoft on the windows side i can guarantee they know how to extract every cent possible from subscriptions and their os business...if this is true for their gaming division...I have no idea.

Xbox should just be a standard for running Xbox games, they will release hardware just like they do with Surfaces but Xbox games could run on any compatible hardware, including PCs or even other consoles.

Hard to say. But I hope not, tbh. Sony are already giving us the weakest Playstation generation ever, and it won't improve without direct competition.

Hell fucking no. They will win next gen!

It all depends on how many people will engaged* with their next console**

* People messing around with In store demos and at friend's houses count as engagement.

** Also any pc with Windows 11 and the preloaded Xbox App is technically a "console" as well.

In the far recent future of 2027, there is only engagement. Praise be the Omni Stock Holders.

I hope they release another console. Something more Xbox 360 sense of fun and quirky rather than their recent consoles.

Jason Ronald and his team have been replaced on the Xbox hardware, so that gives me some hope - considering the Series S mess.

Just a thought…

With Valve entering the market with PC handhelds and prebuilds and possibly console-like Steam Machines completely sidelining Windows and running their own SteamOS, is it wise for Microsoft to help Steam grow even bigger?

🤔
