I guess the problem is more, that they make good single-player games. And less multiplayer-focused stuff. And if they make multiplayer-focused stuff, it is so complicated (e.g. simulation based) that you don't motivate the average person and so you have only the "specialists". But those are a to small group to keep servers active.
E.g. Fortnite is not complicated at all. Even noobs have a chance to get onto the first place. Sometimes you have the "experts" on the field you don't have a chance against, but they also don't survive everything and so everybody has a chance (even I won a few matches and I'm really not good at playing fortnite ^^).

Nah. I figure once a hobby starts making me look up research and studies, I need a new hobby. I'm just going by the number of single player big hitters versus multi-player ones. Sony seems to trend towards the solo experience barring indies and multi plat stuff. I can't really think of too many single player exclusives that moved hardware on Microsofts' end. Fable? Alan Wake? Granted, it's a blind spot for me, as I've never owned one, as stated previously, so maybe there's a lot under my radar.
that does not make any kind of sense

Honestly i think playstation has great balance of online multiplayer and great single player games, shame some of u xbox fans can't seem too see that, really hope xbox can find that balance,
Honestly I think Xbox has a great balance of online multiplayer and great single player games, shame some of you Playstation fans can't see that, I really hope Playstation can find that balance...

The difference is that the Playstation relies upon third parties for its best multiplayer experiences and produces the best single player games themselves whereas Xbox produces the best multiplayer experiences on its own platform while relying on third parties for the best single player experiences. There is nothing wrong with either approach, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Sorry for this stupid question, I recently put my attention to the PlayStation ecosystem. I have the Game Pass for the Xbox, which allowed to buy games on PlayStation. I recently bought the uncharted collection, dream, last of us remastered, last of us 2, ghost of tsushima, uncharted 4. I had Spiderman with all dlc, and god of war before. But I am not getting the same fun i got on the Xbox. Is game pass spoiling me with fun games (tried a lot of indie/rpg turn order games), that makes it hard to enjoy those games, or am I missing some hidden PlayStation games, that i am not aware of?

My favorite games are splinter cell series, need for speed for racing, FIFA (game pass has me covered on that), and challenging games, more specifically platforming which has your attention. Could I find gems like that on PlayStation?

I have gaming pc, which is used for mmo, or fps games. and I don't like playing shooter games, unless its Single player focus, if its MP, then I can only play it on pc, due to having issues with controller aim.

The same way you could say Xbox has always had a problem with toxic communities
Definitely not as bad as some of the ps communities I have been in….competitive rainbow six siege on PlayStation is like getting cancer and aids at the same time….the ps party system seems to have some security holes which allows little shits to ddos you while playing

I will say one thing crossplay actually improved cod on all platforms

When it comes to 1st party titles only, then I think their target is just demographic of people who can afford those new shiny single player story driven games.Younger audience playing Fortnite or Rocket League or whatever have to heavy rely on their parents cash or entry level salaries and those people are already covered by publishers of the above.
If Sony had to get more focused on multiplayer they would have to compete with all those behemots but why they would do that? They already get chunk of cash of every MTX bought on PlayStation store and PlayStation plus requirement is a thing since PS4.

I'm very social and spend a ton of time (at least now that the pandemic is winding down) out with friends, coworkers, my wife, and my kids.

Where I'm not social is video games. I have zero interest in playing online games with random internet dudes (no offense to anyone here) with my very limited free time.

Yeah. NFS and FIFA are available on PS. The most recent ones, are they even on GP day one? I know FIFA used to be on a timer. And probably lots of other annual EA games. For challenging games you could try Demons Souls or Bloodborne and there might be others. Astrobot is a good platform game (one of the best I have played, in fact), though for one you need VR.

Each to their own but I prefer those PS exclusives to most games available on GP and I do have GP as well. I barely use it these days. The last time was when Alien was boosted.
I feel like a lot of Sony games are story driven offline games. It seems like playstation gamers like to play offline.

Yep. Sony doubled down on Single player experiences while it was said this phenomenon was dead. I like the odd online only game but one or 2 is really enough for me. Give me single player games that let me play at my own leisure any day of the week. And with the sales of God of War going north of 25 million Sony does seem to have a point.

It's all on Sony. Because as seen with CoD, Fortnite, Fifa, BF, Minecraft, PUBG, R6, Rocket League and so on and so on, if only you give people a game that's fun to play they'll stick to it, so the community is not the issue.

Sony tried really hard during the PS3 era, but ultimately failed miserably, because pretty graphics at 30FPS and sluggish gameplay won't establish any MP franchise, 60FPS and simple, fluid, responsive gameplay is what it takes, and Sony simply doesn't have what it takes to make this kind of games. People laughed at CoD through years, like "lol at the graphics", well look where CoD is one and a half decade later and where are all those other pretty looking shooters. That's right, most of them don't even exist anymore.

And the roots of this reach all the way back to 2006, because truth be told, despite being a whole year LTTP, Sony still came to the 7th gen unprepared, the PSN was "just there" for the sake of not being worse than MS on paper, but it was awful in practice, people gave it a pss only because it was free, there was no cross-game voice chat, and so on, they entered the online era with no plans for years in advance how to leverage the fact that consoles are now connected to the internet. And this has led to some serious both short- and long-term consequences.

First things first, their MP games were dead within just a few months because they were never primarily build around competitive online/core gameplay first and foremost, with added campaign, rather the opposite, they made SP games where gameplay is added just to serve its purpose in telling the story. So after dozens of failed attempts Sony ultimately gave up entirely and switched to making SP-only titles at the beginning of PS4 lifecycle, where pretty visuals, scripts, cut-scenes, QTEs etc. can carry the game, most of their titles have melee combat to begin with, so I honestly cannot see them coming back with anything meaningful in terms of online shooters, like ever, they'll keep making the same mistake over and over again - focus on SP which looks good on trailers, and then add some MP on top to a game that not actually fun/enjoyable to play at its core.

And secondly, they aren't good at supporting their games post-launch, never were, and that's such a damn crucial aspect nowadays of maintaining a healthy playerbase, they don't have the know-how of patching stuff on the fly like everyone else does, and that's partially also responsible for killing all those MP titles, as waiting for any fixes, patches, rebalancing etc. took them way too long, and additional content was rarely to be found, what you get out of the box is sure polished as hell, but that's all you'll ever got from it.

I think few years back, well maybe not few years back but almost a decade ago Sony switched their strategies.

They used to pump out 1st Party Multiplayer Exclusives like:
Killzone
SOCOM
Resistance
Warhawk

Although these games were great in their own right, they just couldn't compete with the big boys like Call of Duty and Battlefield. Sony recognized this during the PS3-era that their strength was in Single Player experiences like Uncharted, The Last of US, etc... and took that momentum into the PS4-era. Once Sony decided to concentrate on single player experiences and not going after the household multiplayer games, they decided to use their cash moneys by investing into exclusive content with Call of Duty (early beta access, content, etc...) and foster that community, same with Fortnite.

As much as I love their single player experiences, I would love to see Sony either rectify some old multiplayer focused franchises or a new IP that focuses on multiplayer, I think they can now do both effectively.

Some people (me) just don't care to play games online and prefer to play only or mostly single player experiences. At the end of a long day of work and dealing with people, etc.....the last thing i want to do is go online and deal with more people to play a game. I prefer playing games on my own and escaping, but that's just me. I wouldn't fault Sony or any other company for that.

This is off topic as heck... But let's go... If you disliked those games, maybe PlayStation is not for you. I don't see how game pass can make you dislike them, unless you think that they are not worth buying, since you already have a lot of games on game pass... But thats up to you.

You should try: Bloodborne (hard game and one of the best games ever made), Ratchet and Clank (for your platforming needs maybe?), Gran Turismo Sports (amazing racing game), Gravity Rush 2 (unique open world game) and many others....

Good luck, you can always sell the console if you dislike it.

Now on topic: Ehhh... MP is fine and all, but SP>>>MP.

Theyr are hunderds of online focust games from 3 party developers on Playstation, and the online community on PS is the biggest on console.
Sony singleplayer games are one of the best of the industry.
More then 80% of PS gamers LOVING those singleplayergames. There is your answer. When you love those games and dont give a fuck about on online gaming you are still a gamer.

A friend of me plays only online, and when i watch him, o God.
He is getting tantrums when he lose the connection ore the game is lagging like hell, when noobs dont protect him while he fighting a boss and does noobs doing theyr own thing. He is grinding his ass of to get a important Weapon ore skills over and over again.
He is shouting as noobs get in his way, and so on...He is trowing his controller around, ore other things he get his hands on, stamping his feet in anger and shouting words i can repeat in here....
Where is the fun in that?

Not sure how playstation players can be antisocial when there's tons of multiplayer games on the platform with big and active playerbases
Ps+ has almost 50 million subscribers and I'm going to guess a large chunk of those aren't only paying for the monthly games.

I'm really surprised so many people voted to give up and focus on single player games... really?

Can't speak for other but at least IMO there's SO many third party multiplayer games that you'll always have plenty of multiplayer options on Playstation even if Sony themselves aren't making any.
Want to play multiplayer on Playstation right now? You have COD, Fortnite, Rocket League, Warfrare, Outriders, Destiny, Borderlands 3, It Takes Two, FFXIV, All Sports games, a ton of indies, etc, etc. Lots of games with big active playerbases

But there aren't really that many studios making these Sony style high budget single player games. So I'd much rather have Sony focusing 100% on delivering these great single player games while third parties got me more than covered with more multiplayer gamas that I'd ever need.

This is why I quit MW over a year ago. The game just pissed me off. I usually signed on early evening. First thing I did was Mute all. Then I would just getting pissed off by campers, lag spikes and all kinds of shit. There is fun in MP if it goes well, but most of the times it just pissed me off even if it did go well. Or when I play co-op with randoms, people skipping everything, rushing through. Doing stupid shit and dying to the same stupid stuff over and over. Its a waste of time really. I remember these fucks trying to cheese Atheon in Destiny, I joined up. After 20 minutes they still couldn't pull it off. I told them to just do it legit as it would've been quicker at this point, saw no response and I disconnected. But then again co-op with randoms is usually a recipe for failure.

I rather play a single player game I can play at my own pace, not being pissed off by laggers, campers or stupid players.

I still play MP, but just not prolonged periods. A few rounds of Gears 5 or something, or Wreckfest.

I do my socializing offline. Having to play with a bunch of random people who more often than not just mess everything up just does nothing for me. Most of the missions in GTA and RDR online would be ten times better as SP experiences. I don't know why Sony gets crap for still caring about SP games.

I'm not much of an online gamer but they've just had a major online community event, the first ever qualifying Olympic Virtual Event.

It's certainly not for me but I wouldn't be too surprised too see it becoming far more of a thing for them in the current generation.

Call of duty and Fortnite are huge on playstation, but Sony has been trying to build communities around multiplayer and online games since they bought the exclusivity of street fighter v, but for some reason their online/multiplayer first party games and exclusives never grow like a sea of thieves, , halo, fortnite, overwatch even splatoon with Nintendo's lackluster online service. Is the problem the gamers or the games? the last failure is Destruction Allstars. In my opinion is the games, the games are not that great or there are games doing the same stuff but better. Should they give up on the online games and let the online aspect to the big boys or should they approach with a different tactic?
There might be 'communitys' but english isn't their native language, Eu is Sony land and thats 27 different languages.

Look at he PlayStation Tournaments Open Series:

They do a lot of games with it like COD, Soul Caliber, Tekken, Street Fighter, MK11, NBA2K21, Fifa 21, Mobile Suit Gundam, Under the Night, Warface etc etc.

And then their big boy GT Sport Official FIA championships (starting soon again). There is no greater eSports race game on consoles atm. I mean does anyone care about Forza Motorsports these days?

I don't care much for online gaming. I sunk a shitton of time into Destiny, but being in a clan and all that bullshit became a second job. That's not fun. FIFA online was cool at times, but insanely uncool a lot of times. Playing with randos is no fun, and footy just isn't that popular in the US, where most of my friends are. I played a decent amount of couch multiplayer games with my friends. My actual friends. I don't need to socialize online, I can do that the old fashioned way. I hate when games have multiplayer trophies. Shadowfall did that, and it's the only reason I spent as much time online in that game as I did. I prefer to get in and out of a game at my own leisure, and I prefer to compete against a computer, or play something single-player. I've also grown to hate social media, so there's also that. I don't need to force connections with people I don't see on a regular basis face-to-face.

Ps home and free online was a boost for the "online community" the op is talking about now online gamers rally around COD, Apex and have moments with PS PLUS.

i have demon souls 3 on steam, I also bought bloodborne when i bought the system for my little brother (he has ps5 digital now). Nfs and FIFA are on my Xbox with game pass. Guess I will stick with the ones I bought now, and try to finish them.
Gonna wait for the new horizon 2 and gow 2.

I don't hate them really. I like games, not the box it come with. My only regret is not owning the switch, so I can complete the 3 system experience people enjoy.

My only problem is I cant game more than 2 hour in 1 sitting. even FIFA, which i enjoy now, wont let me do 5 matches in a row. so i try to balance things out, and try fresh gameplay with other games (switch genres). I was just hoping PlayStation had those, since I am saving money with game pass. So far, I bought around 10 PlayStation exclusive games, while I got some for free.

I had the OG Xbox, before buying the one s last year. played Pandora tomorrow, chaos theory, metal gear 2, neo. sadly those games don't exist now.

like people here already said, Sony had GT for a long time. now EVO is dominated by Playstation.

as for shooter Sony actually had good dedicated communities back on the PS2 and PS3 with SOCOM and Warhawk. but they failed to build on them and gave up after MAG/SOCOM4 and Starhawk failed on the PS3. the studios did solid work but it was hard for exclusive MP games to gain momentum. if Sony do a Warhawk remake it would be a hit.

The chat groups on PS4 kill is what really killed it. Sony killed the chat groups last year, and it really sucks. No more connecting really at all. It's just talk to friends and that's it. Make a group of friends, talk.

Are playstation gamers antisocial or is sony failing at creating an online community.

Tldr: yes.

Playstation gamers are mostly anti social because Sony focuses on single player games. At least the fanboys.

Sony never seemed to care about online communities in the first place, which mirrors people's opinion.

So why should Sony even bother when their current recipe shovels money into the bank?
