Are there any 'pirate simulators' for PC(at least)?

Like flight and spaces sims, cept with pirates. You get to own your own ship, maybe design the flag for it, hire a crew to handle the, uhh.. deck swabbing duties. You can do things like do battle with other ships via cannons, ramming, boarding and having a sword fight, etc. Maybe enter ports then pillage towns, work up a really bad/infamous rep for yourself that bounty hunters come looking to collect the price on your head. Ship upgrades, etc, etc. Basically, the whole works.

Are there any pirate sims like that?

You mean aside from the new PIRATES! game that just got released and people have been talking about all over the forum?

MIRC

Er...does Pirates of the Caribbean count? I never played it but some people have said it's like Morrowind with Pirates. It wouldn't be a "sim" but it wouldn't be a mindless action game either.

Yes, though from what I heard PoTC suffered from those deadly, nastly, wart-infested game crushing programming bugs, so cavat empor on the purchase of that game.

Uncharted Waters and its sequel were inspired. It was much more open than Pirates in that you can pretty much develop yourself into either a mercenary for your kingdom or into a pirate, or try to stay under the radar by just being a merchant trading goods.

I adored that game and its sequel. Buying and selling rice, and porcelain (heck, I memorized all the prices at the different ports at one time) and the prices of goods change depending on supply and demand from both the player and the in-game simulation of other traders moving about.

it's absolutely fantastic. All that done on the SNES/Genesis, although a PC version was also available.

KOEI needs to get their assess of the Dynasty Warrior crap and get back to making good strategy games.

Pirates! is seriously one of the most fun games of 2004. All you do is fuck around, dance with bitches, pillage and plunder and be a pirate. It's fucking great.

Pirates!, Pirates!, Pirates!

It's so literally the game you want that...well....you must be living under a rock to not know about it already, no offense :D

For a simple, free pirate game I strongly recommend Taipan!. Nowhere near as deep or pretty as Pirates!, but addictive nonetheless.
Holy crap- that goes way back. I remember playing that in the computer lab in high school. The negative debt bug got a lot of laughs at the time.

speaking of pirates, is there a demo in the works?
It seems pretty likely, has Firaxis skimped on demos in the past? I'd honestly be curious to know.
