Are there any Shooter-RPG hybrids?

A game that's an RPG and a shooter in one... like... Picture this..

Ikaruga, with a leveling system. The more baddies you shoot down, the more exp you get and probably the higher your levels go up, the more abilities you can learn and the better stats your spaceship can get.

or..

Something like Xenogears, but you have two exp levels, one for your aircraft and one for non-aircraft battles.

But the key aspect of "shooter" has to remain present in the game (you know, flying around, shooting and blowing stuff up, all while dodging 100's of bullets in missles).

Does anything like that exist?

radiant silvergun. the more points you rack up with a gun, the more powerful it becomes. considering that there are six weapons, not counting the specials, it makes for some very interesting strategies.

There was a dreamcast game named Armada that would absolutely meet your demends.

Bah. What about PS2?

And as for Guardian Legend, how about something with a world map, towns, NPCs, and a party, etc. like other RPGs? :D

Jade Empire has a shooter mini-game to it, each area you visit is a new level. Dunno how or if it uses your stats or levels up though.

There's also a single Lightgun Shooter/RPG hybrid:

Metro3D apparently also still has an Armada 2 in the works for GC/PS2/XBox. Despite putting it's development on hold for a few years, they recently put the forum for it back up, and are dropping hints that it is indeed coming. It'll basically be like the first title in form, overhead shooter w/ leveling up, equipment, and the like, but it will now include online play (on PS2 & XBox only, naturally).

I quite liked the first Armada, and a beefed up online version should be great. :)

Psyvariar also levels you up the more you buzz.

Thing is, though, depending on your level of imagination a lot of shooters kind of work like that. Except you get higher scores instead of level ups. Chaining, I think, is something in the same vein. Pretty much anything that features a more advanced scoring system than just shooting baddies for points gives the same kind of satisfaction as leveling up does.

This is kind of "out there", though, so I could see why no one would agree.

UN Squadron for SNES was kinda like this, you could buy advanced weapons and aircraft (even had my company's most famous plane - the F-14!), and it had characters you can pick with different stats.

I had an idea for a shooter/RPG hybrid too, back in the days of Life Force :D

Technically you could say say Ratchet and Clank 2 is a shooter because hter is tons of gunplay action, and that has RPG elements.

It's just ironic considering the original poster used Ikaruga as an example...

I personally don't like having shot-strength determined by score, because I suck :/ As reference, I can't even beat the first level of RS on a credit even though I've owned it since the day it came out. But on Ikaruga, I can get to stage 3.

Still, I find RS more fun than Ikaruga. There's just a lot more variety. Both are great games though.

Guess you are brillant, I thought I was only one thinking of that originally fun nes game when I seen thread title.

Whoah, someone else remember this too? Awesome.

I would also go with Radiant Silvergun as well. Not sure if Panzer Dragoon Saga could qualify though.
