The BoM is estimated to have been about $270, so they should've come in at $399 and focused on recouping R&D costs over the course of the generation while building out a more sizeable and healthy market for their VR solution and VR in general; which in turn gets them more software sales/revenue on the platform and helps the entire space. Then around the 3yr mark release a revised cost-reduced version at $299 to really accelerate it, alongside a $399 premium variant with wireless + pancake lenses..
Instead they marked it up to $550 to recoup costs fast, ruined its short to mid term prospects and the only way I can see them truly getting on good ground again is a soft relaunch, with some exciting new software, a marketing push and perhaps with the aforementioned low cost and premium sku options.
My concern is they see their completely bungled attempt, incompetence and bad decisions; and instead of learn from it and do PSVR3 a lot better, they either half-arse that or even worse, don't bother because they can't reflect on their failings, instead blaming the market and consumers. Which is unfortunately how more and more companies are conducting business these days.
..They also should've had refined, full blown PC functionality and cross-platform VR releases out of the gate to further bolster it. They also should have focused on back compat with PSVR1 (see this old post for some novel approaches to get around this).
