Are you comfortable with 3rd party games being 70$ in this gen?

I have no idea what you are trying to say.
people will pay 70$ for quality games, certain company produces. We talked about that here, and people were happy to pay for it.

That is why I didnt want to get in to 1st party game pricing. It creates console war. 3rd party is easy topic.

If it has a fair amount of quality content, i have no problem.

Let's be honest, nowadays games have a lot more content than before.

Most games from PS3/Xbox 360 era could be finished in one weekend easily, the majority didn't even had multiplayer and the only thing left was to go after trophies.

Nowadays you can play a new game for an entire month, or even more.

I buy for the quality, if it is Returnal I would not give even 20 dollars ... But if it is Gravity Rush and it will cost 60 dollars I would pay triple without problem ... To help the developers.

The less I have to pay the better it is for me, but when I want the best I am ready to pay for the best.

There is no real make it or break it price point for me, even though I think AAA games should be 59,99€. In the entertainment industry (including books, movies, tv shows, music, games) you weirdly pay around the same for a good quality experience as you pay for a bad quality experience. For me personally it is impossible to compare TLOU2 for 60$ which is a timeless masterpiece well ahead of the rest of the industry to games like Final Fantasy XV, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, Gears of War 5 or Anthem.

Another thing that is very important for me is the authenticity and purity of games. I would rather pay 60-70$ upfront and own a game and have it a pure single player gaming experience that is in no way compromised over a free2play game that is designed and monetized with that in mind.
That is also why I prefer Gamepass over free2play microtransaction games, but if I had to pick what kind of 3rd party games I really like and I think did it well and were monetized correctly :

The Witcher 3 ! Base game fair price, gigantic game, high quality and the DLC was actual additional single player content that was worth the money and time.

???

Multiplayer exploded in the 360 era? £40 day one for CoD, Battlefield, Halo, Gears, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 etc. £70 today for practically the exact same games scaled up.

The problem is that publishers would just continue to use the price hike as the new baseline. But, I'm with your thoughts. Wasn't it Star Trek Online that offered a lifetime subscription? Something similar to that for most non-GAAS titles sounds appealing. All the multiple editions for new titles coming out makes me shy away from games I might be interested in. I'm looking at you Tales of Arise.
I find it doubtful they would make it the new baseline. It is hard enough getting folks to get folks to buy games at $60 and $70 and now add another minimum of $30 on top of that. My worry is more that that deluxe digital edition price of $100 would jump to possibly $140 or more if they are adding content for more than a year. Think about all of the new fighters added to fighting games or more cars in a racing game.

I do think it could work if they gave a supposed discount for the digital deluxe version if bought at launch versus buying the stuff piece by piece as they come out. The supposed trick of your saving money if you buy all of it right now type deal.

Keep forgetting about Tales of Arise. I was originally interested in it but found the female co-lead to be a bit boring. I'll have to do some more research on the game.

Multiple editions are just straight up annoying. I tend to not buy collectors edition unless it had a music cd. I also generally don't buy those digital deluxe editions at launch since they just don't seem worth it for the content that you get. If the digital deluxe edition was actually for all future content as well I would be okay with it. At most I might buy it for like an FF game.

Unlockable character. Free extra content. Full games. No dlc. No mtx games. Games now days are worthless.

We used to use cheat codes or unlock characters, by playing the game.

Full game

MTX content.

That is where we are heading now.

Games are being used to fork extra money from us.

Multiple editions is silly when you have games like Super Monkey Ball and Sonic Colors offering them. I guess I'd rather see XYZ game be $64.99 rather than XYZ Standard Edition being $59.99 and XYZ Deluxe Edition being $69.99. I'm guilty of it as well as I bought the expensive editions of Diablo, Monkey Ball and Lost Judgment. I know I'm going to love those games so supporting them doesn't really bother me, even if the additional content is frivolous. All this does make me really appreciate Nintendo's approach as they price both their games and DLC fairly.

Well, prefering one game to another is a matter of personal taste. But putting taste aside, it's clear that good modern games are rich in content, while some older games can be beaten in one afternoon.

It's funny you naming Returnal, I got the platinum trophy this weekend. Took me more than a month to fully finish it, and it's a great game, arcadey, fast-paced and challenging. I believe it will get some cult following and it will be viewed as a underrated gem in the future.

Gravity Rush is fun, but the first is very short and have too little content. I can see people feeling disapointed by buying it at $40. Gravity Rush 2 however has a lot more content and is more deserving of having the $60 price tag at release (i think that was the price).

Nope, I have a gamepass sub until 2024, so MS/PC and some third party is covered.

For PS5 exclusives, since they are mostly single player I can wait and pick them up used from the bargain bin/when they are on PS plus.

They can raise the price up, doesn't mean I will pay it. I will also share games digitally with a friend on PS so they will be effectively 50% off on release if I decide to go that way.

Why the 3rd party vs 1st party distinction? You know that makes no sense whatsoever right?
Yeah, I'm wondering about that too, I mean these days I much more excited for 3rd party games like SMT5, Tales of Arise and Elden Ring over first party games like Horizon.

People must understand that Gravity Rush 1 is a game for a portable console... But short it is not, is a long game for a portable console.

Gravity Rush 2 is very rich in content. My message is that before I supported the company like this and I confess that I bought it after the discount will end ... But now with the tyranny with Jim Ryan I am in debate whether to buy it for the last time later or during its discount, for that Japan studio is gone.

These games today weren't even worth the $60. I'll be damned if I pay $70. I'll just wait for the ultra mega edition a month after release for $30-$40.

they can charge want, I'll rarely pay ir , but doesn't bother me if they do,
I'll just wait for prices to drop just like I do for any game that is more than I think it is worth. Now if someone releases something I think is worth 70, I'd buy it, but that would have to be something really special.

though as someone that bought neo geo games back when they were new (though at the tail end of the consoles life) and genesis and snes games when they were new, If find it a bit funny that 70 is some offensive price when genesis and snes games were frequently 70 or more when new.
anyway If you don't like it don't buy, if enough people agree with you, they'll go back to 60 and if they don't, just wait for price drops.

Mate, I couldn't give a shit. I'll pay good money for something that looks quality and is aligned to my tastes.

Which isn't enough new games these days, hence I buy most games 3-6 months down the line once they are on sale.

Arguably considering the multiple editions offered by games, it has been $70 or above for some time now - just not so out in the open. Pricing a game directly at $70 to start is sort of just ripping off the band aid.

Some might go as far as to say that the mid or high tier editions of certain games are the more feature complete versions of the games, with missions/content cut out from the base title only available on the mid or upper tier pricing level.

It would be interesting to see the numbers behind the various pricing models and how it actually played out in the open market. Something like a $70 up front cost compared to the 3 or 5 tier 60-80-100-120-150 strategy that some companies choose to deploy.

Though yeah, it's obvious if the floor is raised some company will try and raise the ceiling as well.

Nothing changes for me, the games I really want I will buy day 1. Others I will wait for a good sale, like 75% off.

Realistically, I'd like all games to be free for me if I had the choice. I do realise that's not a sustainable option though.
Just like anything else, I don't really work on set prices. I asses what I think a game is worth to me and that's what I'll spend on it, sometimes that means that I buy something a little later while I wait for the price to settle. I'd have no issues with paying $70 for a game if I believed that it was worth that much to me.
To be honest though, I've never actually had to pay the sticker price for any game on launch day, not even I'm buying the downloadable version.

Nope. Games are worth $20 to me, i.e. that's the the price I will happily pay for a digital game with no possibility to re-sell.

That's the difference between the new price and how much I can sell it for used after playing for 2-3 weeks.

My general rule-of-thumb for buying games is wait until they reach $20 on my Steam wishlist before buying. There are many exceptions for my favorite developers, and other odd rules. For example, will never pay more than $10 for any game released as an Epic store exclusive.

Another strategy is buying games on release day for consoles, selling it after completing, then re-purchasing years later when it's a bargain on Steam to add to my permanent collection. That's actually my #2 reason for owning a console as a PC gamer.

Yes. I was expecting games to be $80 this generation so them being $70 is perfectly fine by me especially since I trade them in within a month after completing them so it's more like $35 for me day one.

$70 single player experiences that you play once and don't ever touch again ..no

however

if your getting multiplayer and added value after that initial purchase I don't mind and even gaas to some degree are not so bad providing playing with others is not locked behind a paywall but if your trying to pass off content that should of been in the original game or something as simple as a framerate unlock or upscale as a directors cut then they can get fucked

I am considering going back to Gamefly when my Game Pass sub ends. Sort of works out better as a rental service since it includes all consoles. Back when I did Gamefly they offered a discount on new games and the coupons so I never paid full price. I assume they still do that? The new price point is a minor reason I am considering dropping Game Pass for Gamefly.
They do!
Honestly, Gamefly is better than ever, with used game sales(you get unused codes that are in the case)being pretty frequent as of late. They usually beat all other options on price, especially for newer games. Personally, I do GamePass AND Gamefly;)

Nope.

All of the super expensive Sony games that I've shelled out for have been disappointing. The best was Demon's Souls - but it's a remake of an ancient game. Returnal was too hard and no fun - don't bother, I don't want to hear about how easy it is - and Ratchet & Clank was too easy and no fun.

Thus proving, once again, that gameplay trumps graphics, my GOTY for 2021 will probably be Deep Rock Galactic for the second year in a row. Didn't cost me $70USD, endlessly playable, endlessly fun, and is an infinitely better experience than any of those three overpriced Sony exclusives.

It's been worth it for the games I've bought so far, can't vouch for the games I haven't, obviously. The more we move away from cross-gen games, the more we'll truly find out if the price raise was worth it.

Hopefully the next God of War, GTA, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones, Starfield, TES VI, next ND game, next Remedy game etc. Will prove that.

yes, its only 10 dollars more and i have a job, it makes no diff to me.

If you're an adult $10 is miniscule especially in 2021 with inflation.

cutting $10 out of my spending is super easy considering a starbucks coffee is $10 ffs.

So they should just jack it up 10 more since it's so trivial, and maybe 10 more or maybe 10 more

Who cares? It's only 10.00

Right?

$10 is not much for how much entertainment you can get out of a game.

But it stings a lot if it's a shit game. I'm fine with price increases, I'm not fine with no demos or pathways to obtain refunds.
