Are you even having fun with gaming?

Oh I don't know. Been playing games for the last 35 years or so and I'm still here, obsessing over the latest new releases while still playing the games of my youth. Discussing graphics has always been part and parcel of gaming anyhow. A game's visual representation can have a great impact on one's enjoyment of a game.

The other thing to consider is the forum itself. There's a wealth of technical knowledge here on Gaf, and discussing resolution, assets or framerate interests a great number of people. I guess it can give the impression of too much analysing and not enough playing sometimes.

I do but I don't take it anywhere as "serious" as most "hardcore gamers" do. I play what I like enjoy it and move onto the next.

There's nothing wrong with getting excited about new and more advanced technology doing things that are rare or never seen before. I do. It's not always one or the other.

If I'm not having fun playing the game, good graphics don't have much of a point. For me, Ubisoft has been a AAA developer whose games more often than not have been completely un-engaging; and all the advanced animation and graphics won't change that.

I'm extremely excited about Destiny, TLOU Remastered, Driveclub, and Alien Isolation because they look like fun games to play. They also look amazing to boot, so why shouldn't I fawn over the tech?

Yeah. One of the things is, we can't go out blasting zombies and stuff in real life, so the more the games can pull us in and make us feel immersed in the fictional world, the better. Good games are like books to me. The details and effects are like extra descriptions to me. Dunno how to say it better really. But yeah, I'm having fun with the games I do like still. Just because we're talking about tech stuff doesn't mean that's all we care about.

Mario Kart 8 has been giving me pure fun recently.

Like, its a game I'm still happy even after I lose miserably.

The last game I had actual fun playing, great art or not, was DK:TF. Something about Nintendo games man.

But honestly, these days I'm so busy I talk about games more than I play them. I never thought I'd have a backlog.

I was hoping getting older would deter me from playing games, but I swear I've been spending MORE time playing games now than I have when I was a kid.

Mario Kart 8 is fun concentrate. And now I'm addicted with Xenoblade Chronicles. Between that and Bravely Default, this is been the first time I've been enamored by JRPG's since 2002/3.

I'm more of an gaming enthusiast; to me, it's more about doing more than just sitting and playing a video game. I love modding, have fun drawing/designing gaming related things, I even loved making arcade sticks years ago when SF4 just came out. My favorite "AAA" game is Skyrim, I'm not ashamed to say it. However, I love how mod-able it is, to a point where now I don't remember how the vanilla game plays anymore.

Whether or not this talk of graphics or technological prowess is intregal to enjoying playing video games, that's up to the person playing the game. I've modded a few of my PC games to be graphic wonders, hell, after hearing about Watch Dog's graphic "fixes", I'm tempted to buy the game just to see how far I can push my PC. Now, that facet of video games may not be fun for some, but it's fun for me.

However, my favorite, most fun, and I think most immersive/engaging video game I've ever played was Dwarf Fortress...

That's how I feel, and the technical aspect of gaming helps to improve those fictional worlds.

To be honest , lately I'm not having alot of fun with single player only games . Been playing Dota alot only . While I love Dark Souls 1 to death , Im not really having alot of fun with Dark Souls 2 despite finishing it also .

Luckilly , recently I'm having alot of fun with Dragon Dogma :DA , it just clicks .

i cant stand single player games while my heart races with excitment over a match of Starcraft 2 or Titanfall. .

I 100% respect your opinion, but I'm the exact opposite of you :-)

OP: "Are you even having fun with gaming?"

But seriously, at least for me, gaming has been pretty awesome for quite some time.

Not while I'm playing Watch Dogs, I'm not.

Feels like I'm going through the motions with that game, but I'm trying to force myself to finish it.

Can't wait for a game to come along and lift me back up. (
The Last of Us Remastered
)

It comes and goes for me. Right now I'm in a gaming phase, finished Wolfenstein, finally playing through ME3 and still working on Watchdogs. Sometimes I'll go a few weeks where I just don't feel like playing. Others I can't stop gaming. It's weird

I miss being a kid and being able to just game 24/7.

I wasn't for a very long time. I read/talked about games and the industry rather than played it. The only game I was playing for a while was Dota 2. When my brother would come home from school, I'd watch him play whatever AAA game came out. The Last of Us looked amazing, Watch Dogs looked eh. I recently got Mario Kart and it's been the most fun I've had gaming in a while. The last game I really had that much fun playing was Xenoblade.

You don't know how to play video games then.
Or you don't know know how to have fun, which in that case I feel really sorry for you.

Why would you feel sorry for me in any way, shape, or form?

I just consider "fun" to not be an overriding consideration in any of the entertainment mediums in which I participate.

I don't play games for fun, read books for fun, or watch movies for fun. I participate in these activities because I'm interested in engaging in the experience they offer. If "fun" happens to be a side effect of that experience, then that's great. But if not and yet I found the experience to be engaging, then that's great too.

"Fun" is an incredibly low-hanging metric from which to judge the worthiness of an entertainment experience.

Watched my brother play Dungeons of Daggorath on his old Tandy computer back in the 80s when I was a kid. Started playing myself when he got the Atari 7800. Been enjoying gaming ever since. While I do enjoy snapping a shot or two of a game nowadays (it's a nice feature), playing and enjoying the game always takes precedence.

Playing Dark Souls right now. Damn what a addictive and challenging game!

Even when i'm not playing it i'm still thinking about it.

A crazy thought, but I think people are capable of both appreciating tech/graphics games AND having fun playing them.

You know, like in any other medium of entertainment. Better effects in movies, better artwork in comics, better animation in cartoons/anime, etc.

Might be one of the more pretentious things I've heard in a short while.

Fun and entertainment are the same thing.

Both definitions involve amusement and enjoyment.

Being engaged is being busy.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/engaged

What you're saying is that entertainment experiences designed for enjoyment are not enjoyable, they're busy work.

Which validates my statement that you don't know how to have fun.

Or you consume way too much content to separate the difference, which in that case would warrant a vacation from content consumption.

breh i almost just double perfected a hugo as dan in ultra mega super duper neo street fighter 4 home arcade cabinet edition.

btw dok, we should play a few rounds this weekend. we have to settle ownership of that puppet gif once and for all.

Still enjoy games but not as I used to. I no longer follow the hottest and latest trends on the internet. I haven't bought a PS4 or X1 because there is not enough games to justify abandoning PS360 with so many awesome arcade and downloadable games. The Walking Dead, just started playing and it is great. Same game in 1080p for $400 ? nope. I'm fine with HD for now.

I won't hide, i'm enjoying it less and less.

That being said i'm also playing far less than i used to as a result, so i guess it's not really a bad thing.
Mostly enjoying a few indies and f2p, but i still get some AAA on PC or games for my vita when i feel like it.

I was waiting for Ultra to come out for 360 officially in retail but could I pick up a copy of vanilla and upgrade from that?

Perhaps "entertainment" was not the right word to use, but I couldn't think of another at the time. Maybe "media" would have been a more appropriate word.

As for whether or not I need a "vacation from content consumption" (whatever that means), you should consider thinking about this subject a bit more deeply and I think you'll find that your horizons could be broadened somewhat!

Might be one of the more pretentious things I've heard in a short while.

I'll take that as a compliment, thank you very much!

No Mans Sky looks fun in that I really like to explore places in games. Plus the MP co-op potential is pretty big, and thats always tons of fun if done right.

Yeah I still have fun with games, although at this point in life, I do feel like I have to stick to a gaming schedule of sorts...which kind of takes a bit out of things sometimes.

What I mean by that statement of course is that if you find video games, or any other forms of media as only engaging, then perhaps a rest from said medium can give you perspective and allow you to look at said medium from a bird's eye POV and find once again what made that media so enjoyable.

Consuming media should never be a chore or a job. Once it's a job, you lose all pleasure or enjoyment you once had when you viewed said media with fresh eyes.

I take a media vacation 1 month out of a year as a palate cleanser.

I've had fun with gaming since I was a tiny child with my NES (about 4 years old) and to this day at 31 years old with my PS3, PS4, Wii U, 3DS, and Vita I'm still having fun. It's never gotten old or stale for me and it's never stopped being fun for even a minute.

I fucking love gaming. I look forward to every time that I buy a game. I often buy 3-4 new releases a month. I think I've bought up to 7 on particularly busy months (like this past February). Though June and July can be pretty dry, I usually still have stuff to play from a previous month or two and catch up there anyways. This year I'm as excited as I've ever been, if not more so. E3 was god damned fantastic for me for PS4 & Wii U games, even though some of the bigger ones are coming in 2015.

My buy list of games with confirmed release dates this year is currently: The Last of Us Remastered, Tales of Xillia 2, Diablo 3, Danganronpa 2, Destiny, Natural Doctrine, Fairy Fencer F, Alien: Isolation, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Evil Within, Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Persona Q, Valiant Hearts.

TBA/2015 games: Tales of Hearts R, Lords of the Fallen, Metro Redux, Rime, The Witness, Sword Art Online, Bloodborne, Final Fantasy Type-0, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Dead Island 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Witcher 3, Dying Light, The Order: 1886, The Division, Batman: Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky, Zelda WiiU, Captain Toad.

I'm probably forgetting some too.

That looks like a shitload of fun to me and I am excited as hell for this year and the next. Not a single year hasn't been awesome for me since I got my NES and so far it doesn't look like that is going to change one bit. =)

I don't always play games to have fun (like I wouldn't watch a series or listen to music just to 'happy'), but I enjoy them. I don't play if I don't feel like it.

If I want to have fun I will go paintballing or go throw a frisbee or football around at the beach, I might even have a few beers and roll one up. I spent $400 bucks on a new console so that games would look fantastic on it. If graphics didn't matter and it was all about fun I never would have moved on from the NES.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Watch dogs was pretty much a snooze fest, although tecnically pleasing to shoot and stuff.

Traded that shit in for Resistance 3 and Into the Nexus and a 20 steam gift card for the sale tmrw. Started resistance 3 and having a blast.

But what makes you think that I consider the level of engagement I have with these mediums to be a chore or a job?

Just because I'm not having "fun" doesn't mean I equate my experience with my everyday job. I don't have to actually "enjoy" a game, book, or movie to have considered the time that I've spent with it to be worthwhile and enriching. I certainly didn't enjoy Schindler's List, but it was an engaging experience I don't regret having.

I really do believe that we do a disservice to the gaming medium by putting "fun" up on the pedestal that it occupies.

When you don't let yourself get caught up in console wars, graphics whoring, artsy interactive experience shit, and just play games that you really enjoy, games never stop being fun. I've been playing mostly competitive games for the last 5 years, SF4, MVC3, Dota 2, CS, etc, and the only time I stop having fun is if I get on an excessively bad losing streak. I love gaming as it is.

I love gaming. Counting pixels, bickering over IQ and art styles, explaining to people why their sales predictions are wrong, doing Iwata's job better than he could ever do it, complaining bitterly about games I'll never play because lol that genre sucks anyway, spending hours reading the daily SJW threads for no other reason than I know some post or another will make me angry...

I don't know about you, but I'm having TONS of fun.

I play games to have fun or hear a story. I've been playing a bunch of Watch Dogs and having a blast with it. I'd never buy a game for a technical showcase. Hell, that's one of the reasons I love indie games, because they're all about the fun or the story, and less about graphics.

I was waiting for Ultra to come out for 360 officially in retail but could I pick up a copy of vanilla and upgrade from that?

oh no that's fine, retail it is.

don't forget: ae is free right now if you got a gold account, heads up in case you didn't know.
