SUTTER, Calif. Is it Big Brother -- or no big deal?
The only grade school in Sutter, California, is requiring students to wear radio frequency identification badges that have the potential for tracking their every move. Some parents are outraged, fearing it will rob their children of their privacy.
The badges were introduced at Brittan Elementary School last month without parental input. It's seen as a way to simplify attendance-taking and potentially reduce vandalism and improve student safety.
Civil libertarians and some parents are protesting. But the principal is dismissing concerns. He says for now, the devices merely confirm that each child is in his or her classroom, rather than track them around the school like a global-positioning device.
