Are you satisfied with the graphics NIntendo has been able to produce on Wii U?

For the most part with games like 3DWorld, Pikmin 3 and SSB4 (the latter considering its aiming for 1080/60fps) feel more polished from a IQ-point of view than most stuff on the 360/PS3 (nothing lower than 720, haven't seen any framerate dips from the 1st party output yet, 60fps is more common than not), but I'm not satisfied with the actual power of the Wii U so it's still a bit of a mixed feeling.

The graphics are serviceable for Nintendo games that are aimed at being cute and charming.

But I'm not going to be buying multiplatform games on a Wii U if I have a choice of getting the game on XBO or PS4.

That's because you like the art style and it looks wonderfull for what it is but technically SMW3D can't hold a candle to games like Beyond, TLOU, GTA V, Crysis 2/3, Forza 4 and Halo 4 just to name a few examples. All running more complex geometry and longer shaders. Sonic Lost Worlds is another prime example. A great looking game but technically downgraded in geometry compared to Sonic Generations. The same reason why that's running 60fps instead of 30fps.
Yeah i realise this. I can't stand the "it's an uprezzed.." Comments though. That's too easy.
But i fully agree these games just make the most of a combination of artstyle and tech available.
Still.... They are doing an amazing job at creating a game that looks fantastic, at 60 fps, and in a relative small size/ amount of Mb/ Gb. They are able to amaze me. I think for example that TLoU was an amazing game (also in graphics in general), but still too ambitious for the console i played it on. Same with Crysis 2/3. SMW3D does a perfect job.

Again, i worry a bit about the Wiiu Zelda game. If any game deserves all the power in the world, it's a game like that. I fear it might be too jaggy and lacking in textures.

But I'm not going to be buying multiplatform games on a Wii U if I have a choice of getting the game on XBO or PS4.
Same here. I bought trine 2 because it was the better version (compared to PS3 and 360). But no way multiplats on Wiiu will hold a Candle to PS4 multiplats.

I DO think SMW3d's graphics are more than servicable.

The wii u being last gen with some next gen graphical effects is interesting. The games can look superb when designed for the hardware and Nintendo proves this but ports are lack luster. Nintendo still needs to realise they need to be near parity in hardware power for 3rd party devs. Maybe they'll realise it when wii-iii comes out in a year or two or maybe they shake things up by working with the oculas rift people for the next hardware.

Besides, Nintendo is in better financial shape than Sony, there's no reason they couldn't take a slight hit on the console only to make it back, and then some, on games and accessories.

Sony is broke, you can even feel the cost cutting in the ps4. Nintendo is Scrooge mcduck and have the money to try new things. The problem is they refuse to do anything they don't make a profit on instantly. They rather collect pennies off the street than spend a few dollars to potentially earn tons more a little later.

It's too bad Retro got stuck to DK. I wonder what type of graphics they can push. Their GC/Wii output was great, and they are a huge fans of 60fps.

Nintendo's games have the same solid art direction as they've always had. They've just got some extra effects thrown in making them look extra good on Wii U.

I'm satisfied with what I see with Mario 3D World and Mario Kart. At the same time though, I kinda wish Nintendo dropped BC and went for better hardware instead.

It's plenty of power for 3D Mario and a few other first party games. Am I pleased with how those look? Yes.
Do I still wish more power was on tap for third parties? Yes.

I'm satisfied with a what I've seen its capable of in the right hands. Especially the recent games that were able to take advantage of better optimizations and not rushed for launch.

With Nintendo's art direction the games will look plenty good enough to the average consumer, though for us gamers there will be plenty room for improvement especially in some titles.

Edit: this is specifically speaking about Nintendo First Party games.

How is it plenty of power when the games don't even run in 1080p? Makes zero sense.

And one of my day jobs involves something rather close to the topic at hand, so I wouldn't pull out that particular card. Sony is selling the console at a per unit loss that doesn't include ancillary costs like research and development (if they did it would be considered a major loss and not a smaller one, as here - as would most consoles). When discussing strictly silicon you forego a ton of costs that are also per unit. Assembly, packaging and shipping are also factored in, as well as a percentage given to each retailer for the box. Margins aren't decided on silicon, and as someone who's into the financial aspect of things I shouldn't have to reiterate it nor be insulted in the process

In that case you already know all of this, but for the benefit of others:

If they didn't capitalize their R&D (which wouldn't be appropriate for PS4 chip development), they'd expense it as it occurred, and most would probably occur in quarters prior to the PS4's release, so I don't think that would result in a major loss in their present quarter. From a manager's perspective, though, you'd normally want to divide the R&D across lifetime units sold for a proper risk-return analysis.

Gross margins in a product like the PS4 are computed with respect COGS and shouldn't include R&D. But the statements from Nintendo and Sony with respect to their losses on the consoles weren't explicitly limited to their variable costs. And as such, there's nothing in their statements that should cause one to doubt the relative accuracy of the IHS estimates. The hardware cost of the PS4 in particular is dominated by components with a mature supply chain.

I was happy when Nintendo made games on the NES. Doesn't mean I'll overlook the price and timing of this thing.

Where was that HD Mario game in 2009? Now we have 1080p TV's so I'm going to expect more.

Hope you hold Microsoft to that same standard.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't buy consoles for graphics, I buy them for exclusives. My PC is for graphics (and getting 3rd party games at way better prices).

Art design is more important to me than anything else related to graphics. Mario 3D World looks better to me than Battlefield 4. More pleasing to my eyes for sure.

Nintendo spends more on RnD than Sony and ms. They follow their ideology on gaming releasing a gaming system and not an entertainment system. Family friendly and home friendly. If Nintendo were to go after sony and ms "hardcore" brand we would lose the Nintendo we love. They focus only on games and game systems. Once they step outside of their box... Gamers will lose.

Just cause they don't go for high power doesn't mean they're cheap. If they were to create a multimedia machine... Then maybe they would go for higher specs. I hope that never happens. Continue focusing on gaming alone and they won't get sucked into the world of one button cinematic hardcore gaming that plagues the big boys.

After gcn Nintendo has become a second household console. Let the big boys compete with fancy graphics and 'great' gameplay.

I suppose that is to show off the water? In which case we have been satisfied for 7 years now.

It's good that Nintendo caught up on hardware last year, but now not so much. It's nice for what it is though, we have to give them that.

Super Mario Sunshine water looks better than that, sorry. Though i agree, the water in that SM3DW screen looks ugly.

Mario 3D World has amazing art direction, and they really get it at every aspect of it. Some of the lower-res textures make for awkward shading/bumpmapping from time to time, but that's entirely forgivable.

It really is all about the art direction. I just got finished playing a few rounds of Killer Instinct on XBox One, which looks phenomenal and is a bit of a graphical achievement, but due to the lack of anti-aliasing and the high contrast bumps and corners of the characters (especially Glacius) it doesn't look super great.

Then again, I guess it's all just opinions.

I completely agrea Nintendo developers work within the power budget and don't try to push the envelope too much technically. TLOU did IMO really suffer from this in a big way. This is why most Nintendo games don't have major performance problems typically found on the opposition. Another more important reason is Nintendo first party development doesn't work with a hard deadline thus giving them all the time to polish their product, so Nintendo's old fashion seal of quality. For example I'm sure if Sega allowed more time for polish for Sonic Lost World it turned out to be a much better game.

No.

I still find Super Mario 3D world looking fun, and even nice most of the time, but graphically speaking it doesn't excite me at all.

It feels like circa 2006 when developers were trying out all sorts of new "next-gen" effects which lead to bloom, rain/blood on your screen, and shiny surfaces all over the place. Same goes for SM3DW, which is kinda meh whenever I see a non-bright & colourful area, as the aforementioned effects look really weird when mixed up with the mario-style. Such as that water picture above - just looks awful.

That's just my opinion regarding the looks of the game, and it won't stop me from playing it for the sake of the gameplay.

Yep. Actually, even my 3 years old PC gives me better graphics than my Wii U.

Satisfied? Yes, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like some more power under the hood. I absolutely love everything else about the system though, and I am glad to see it get much more positive attention as of late.

Welp all I know is that when Ninty announces their next console, or when the WiiU hits $100-150, I'll be satisfied enough that I'll buy a WiiU. But in no way do I consider it next-gen. I just want to play Nintendo games, but they give me no reason to do so until it's dirt cheap. I'll always be able to find the Nintendo games somewhere, and hopefully by the time I want to buy a WiiU they'll be cheap. We all know how long it took them to lower the price on SMG2. I bought it the second they did. I'll wait as long or longer for the WiiU to go down far enough.

3D World looks good but that's because of the art style chosen which allows for sparse locales and simple geometry. I don't see the next Metroid blowing anyone's minds

YEah, but the price is too high for me...

Will be great though when another price-drop happens, will have pretty much all amazing games to play. Mario 3D Land, Smash Brothers, X, WInd Walker, Bayonetta, Mario Kart, and Pikmin...

Nintnedo's first party always put out quality titles in gameplay and graphics. Certainly make great use of the hardware.

Well, the second wave of Wii U titles published by Nintendo has pretty much decimated the first wave beyond my expectations.

Even beyond the classic Nintendo stuff, X compares favorably to any PS360 title in the same category.

3D world and Mario Kart 8 definitely show what nintendo had in mind when building the system, it's 'powerful enough' for what they want to do. More power is all well and good but game development isn't just a box with knobs for 'grafics' and 'gameplay' on it, if Nintendo doesn't want to spend gazillions on producing hyper realistic graphics then in their eyes a more powerful console is a waste. Third party devs don't really enter their equation, and to be honest I don't care too much either as long as I get my Monster Hunter. And it's not like Capcom is going to be putting bleeding edge visuals into that series anytime soon.

I really wish we'd see Zelda soon, or god forbid a Metroid
or F-Zero
to show off the system to people who aren't impressed by the 'Mario' style.
