Are you satisfied with the graphics NIntendo has been able to produce on Wii U?

well its a Nintendo console.

its not like people where expecting Crysis-like graphics (or even GTA:V) on the WiiU.

It's not like console gamers ever got crysis like graphics... And gta5 for PC early next year... Mmmm. Real 1080p60 next gen.

X is pretty huge and it looks beautiful so far. And considering that we're not seeing it until next year and it's last trailer was 5 months ago, it should look even better by the time it releases.

I don't get my Wii U until next month but yeah, I'm pretty satisfied with what I'm seeing. Really glad I decided to go PS4/Wii U in terms of home consoles this gen.

I've been through that part of the teaser frame by frame. I NEED more info.

Wii U could probably handle GTAV.

what's more, is that the pad could handle all of its gimmick features too.

-yelling at the store clerk to make him drop cash faster.
-using the gps without pausing by putting it on the pad
-put the phone on the pad screen.
-touch keyboard for the in-game web browser.
-using the mic to increase the stripper meter (the weirdest thing i ever encountered online).
-motion controls. why does gta have them? i thought it was about grafix and hardcore gaming
-play stupid tv shows whilst driving

If going to do the water thing. But yes, I'm happy with it. If I wanted super realist, I'd just buy whatever the game is on my PC and mod the shit out of it.

The water in this pic looks worse than the other one! It's extremely obviously a small tile repeated over and over again.

To be completely honest, Super Mario 3D world looks visually more stunning than BF4 on the PS4. Probably haven't played to PC version so I should know better... But by far Nintendo has the best lighting and textures I have seen so far with Pikmin and 3D World on the WiiU. Once we see X from Monolith, Neogaf will crash.

Yeah. I mean, I've played 200 hours of MH3U on Wii U, which is basically a 3DS game in HD. So I'm not very demanding about graphics.

Yuh-huh.

Mario looks great, but let's relax here. I know WiiU is kind of out of the spotlight recently, but let's not all get so hyperbolic here (in Gaf fashion!). But yea, Mario is really pretty.

As part of the camp that says "They could do better", EAD just needs a project (that they would be willing to make) that can show lush vegitation and sprawling vistas...Like Pikmin 3 on a normal size scale.

It definitely won't be photo realism but instead it would be sorta hyper realism or surreal. Most likely the latter.

And it will still look amazing a decade from now.

Edit: Just don't expect them to make an FPS anytime soon. They need good reason for such sprawling vistas besides "just because..."

What else can you expect from water physics and tiles? Besides, this game isn't aiming for realism, just for flat out fun!

What else can I expect? Larger tiles so they're not so bleeding obvious!

Plenty of games have more impressive water, and have done for several years. I'm not saying the game isn't fun, or even that it looks bad, I'm just saying that the water is quite unimpressive.

Here's a shot that shows the issue in a more apparent manner. Just look at how obvious those lines are. I think Sunshine had more impressive water, honestly.

I'm still impressed by PS3 titles, I just started playing 3D world and it looks great. Wonderful 101 and Sonic lost world look amazing too.

So far all the games have been colorful cartoon-like affair, so it's hard to really see what it's capable of. But from what I've seen of Mario Kart 8 it looks to be the most impressive.

Omg the water!!!! You mean the water that has nothing to do with that level besides being a background. Big whoop.

It's really delusional if you think about the poloshing EAD Tokyo used to put in their Mario games, that's probably the same water engine from Galaxy but that game was smart in how it used it, this time they fucked up something. And the same can be said about the grass texture in those sunset locations.

But still, the game looks gorgeus.

I think it does matter. With such small simple levels, the background becomes very important. Sunshine had killer water, which added a very nice aesthetic to the experience.

Nothing on the Wii-U has impressed me from a graphical standpoint. If I bought a Wii-U, It definitely would not be for it's graphical capabilities. It'd be for the gameplay.

Sunshine was based around water. You could surf on it. Roll around in mud puddles, etc.

A more basic example of this comparison is like judging N64 on Super Mario 64's water and not Wave Race 64.

I love what they're doing with the Wii U so far.

I've been starving for anything HD from Nintendo for years since the Wii, I'm more than happy.

3D World looks killer, same thing for pretty much all their other 1st party titles.

Definitely. Super Mario 3D World is absolutely gorgeous, as is Pikmin 3. If the next Zelda matches the tech demo my eyes are going to melt.

They could have still used a better solution, in Galaxy 2 there's a large water background smartly covered with clouds and fog, and even if it looks strange it's still better than a pattern, wich is the worst thing you can do with a realistic texture.

Edit; Now thanks guys for the last, spoilery image, guess I'll need to leave even this thread :D

3D World is awesome, but I think everyone needs to keep in mind how only small sections of the game are shown at a time, so the engine isn't taxed with rendering lots of stuff simultaneously.

For an example of this, just look at the large savannah level in 3D World. The draw distance is pretty awful, with random parts of the scenery appearing and disappearing from view frequently. I do slightly worry about how an open world Zelda is going to look because of this.

Nintendo is the master of covering up technical deficiencies, though. Depending on the art style they decide on for Zelda, I can see it out-performing many games on PS4/XB1. Wind Waker HD is probably one of the best looking games I have ever played, and it's a port of 10 year old game.

Buddy, this is a thread about being satisfied with the graphics on the Wii U. I raised the topic specifically because multiple people posted pictures of the water in SM3D World as evidence that they are satisfied with graphics on the system. I'm saying I don't find the water impressive, and gave an example of why I don't find it impressive. Big whoop indeed.

I'd have to say no. I can't overlook the 720p, not in 2013. I can't wait to replay Mario 3D World in an emulator someday.

But can you overlook it on Xbox One?

Nope, nor would I overlook BF4 at 900p on PS4. I've been playing games at 1080p for years now and anything less is simply too blurry, and someday I'll think the same thing about 1080p as well.

I recently finished replaying DKCR on Dophin and think it looks better than 3D World thanks to the resolution increase.

Fair enough, but if that's your thing why play on consoles? Just play on PC.

im very happy and impressed,

seeing how galaxy looked on a wii, I am sure that nintendo can make some magic on the wiiu.

I someone who still has PS2 and Gamecube games to finish definitely. Art style is much more important to me than technical accomplishment. The only problem with Wii graphics for me was that it only outputted 480p so it looked a bit fuzzy on my HDTV. With Wii U outputting at 1080p that's not a problem. Sure it's always nice to have better graphics but I have no problems with weaker graphics like the Wii compared to 360/PS3.

this. I really would love for them to rerelease more of their GameCube and Wii games for the WiiU. enhanced galaxy would be amazing, and a nice buffer for then before releasing galaxy 3. wii games in 480p looked terrible even though the assets often looked nice.

I definitely think they could do better. On a technical level it's all still fairly primitive technology, it's just they're absolute masters at making everything look really good when it's all put together.

But let's not go all crazy and start pretending some of the stuff like the repeating-tile water is visually impressive. It's like it's the first time some of you have seen HD graphics at all...

It's nintendo on HD it's what I expected.
Nothing has outright impressed me though aside from the new Smash Bros.
The way they are melding all the styles together really is something.

I reached a point a while ago where art design and animation matters a whole lot more to me than texture quality, resolution, blur, and filters.

The kind of things that matter to me you can do on old ass arcade hardware or a sega genesis.

I think this is something they are quite masters of.

To be honest, I feel this argument will devolve into a "tech vs. art direction" thread, because as far as I know, Nintendos primary internal development studios have never really pushed the tech side of things for a console, but they definitely do know how to pull the stops to create pleasing eye candy and small surprises to make the world sem more "alive". I believe Jeremy Parish has explained it before in one of the older Retronauts podcasts about them using the tech "in very subtle ways" that seem equally impressive.
