Are you satisfied with the graphics NIntendo has been able to produce on Wii U?

Man I want to get a Wii U so bad. But I just don't feel the console is worth 299.

I'd be all over that shit like bacon on eggs if it dropped to 199. As would...the rest of the world.

So would I…and I wish Nintendo would drop it to $199 so we could finally see if the rest of the world would too. I really think a drop to $199 over the summer or next fall is what it needs to salvage its sales. Another 6-12 months and there will def be enough great games to warrant a purchase (as there kind of are enough games now actually).

It's 299 sure, but it comes bundled with like a 50 dollar game so I don't think it's really that bad a deal.

I feel like I remember seeing this exact same thread an awful lot back in the Wii days, with a Mario platformer acting as the primary support for the argument too.

Nevertheless, even though people claim that this is sufficient, every gen they still get psyched up for the next Nintendo hardware to play the latest from Nintendo on hardware with visual fidelity that they were dismissive of just a few years prior. 'Tis the circle of life.

If this doesn't satisfy you then...

that water looks terrible next to everything else - very out of place

overall I really like what's going on with the wii u but it definitely hasn't blown me away by any measure

Yuh-huh.

Mario looks great, but let's relax here. I know WiiU is kind of out of the spotlight recently, but let's not all get so hyperbolic here (in Gaf fashion!). But yea, Mario is really pretty.

Nah, he's not being hyperbolic.

His game probably looks like mine...

Which makes Mario undeniably better.

hell yes

PS4one might look better but definitively not "8-10 times more powerful"-better
Pikmin 3, W101 and SM3DW look phenomenal.
I also think that next years games will blow a lot of critics of their chairs. I mean, look at Mario Kart 8, Bayo 2 and X. absolutly incredible

I guess? I mean, to me it's a missed opportunity staying with previous gen (read: PS3/X360) graphics. When I bought my Wii U, I knew what I was getting myself into.

On the TV screen, yes.

But the gamepad's screen doesn't make Wii U games look good. It makes Wii 1 and VC games look excellent, though.

You guys realize they'd be taking massive losses at $199 right?

Seriously if you like the games, buy the damn system. It shouldn't be about specs but about what games are available to you.

Yes. At first glance SM3DW looks more pleasing to the eyes than anything seen on PS4 and XB1, imo. But it's all about having great art direction and not being afraid of using colors, plus running at 60fps, so when next gen devs finally gets tired of the muddy realistic war themes we might get to see games look this nice on PS4/XB1 too.

Canceled my Ps4 preorder and got a WiiU a month ago, I now own 12 games for it, I'm more than satisfied with that Nintendo has put out, as I rarely have time to game on my 1080p TV. Off TV play has me completing games again. Still getting a ps4, but I couldn't ignore the impressive library Nintendo has put together in a year. I must be blind, or easy to please, cause unless the internet tells me, I can hardly tell what's 30/60, 720/1080.

This. It's more than worth it at the current price point considering you get a game with it - and it's a damn good one too.

Losses, come on, they just went for EUR 300+ because they wanted to do the Wii all over again.

Yes I am very satisfied with the graphics. At this point I'm also kinda satisfied with the game library too! For me Wii U has 5(!!!) exclusive must play games:

-NSMBU
-Zombi U
-Pikmin 3
-Wonderful 101
-Super Mario 3D Land

You can have all the power you want, but Nintendo proved once more with 3DWorld that art direction will trump everything when it comes to visuals.

Yep, they're good enough. I don't need realistic graphics in most of my games. I'm looking forward to The Witcher 3, but all games doesn't need to be like that. I mean, I actually still think that Team Fortress 2 looks better then most other FPS games.

The WiiU doesn't need to compete with the other platforms in that field for me to want to own one, they just need to have enough unique games. 360 level of graphics + a little boost is enough.

Since I'm a PC Gamer mainly, this whole nextgen transition doesn't mean that much to me.

mario 3dw tries to tread on an eerie semi-realistic feel. in the context of the game its fine and actually does look good-looking but when you try to read into it too far and isolate it like this it does and should look weird

As a graphics-whore PC player, I'm completely happy, yep. I can appreciate that they have enough power to handle the sorts of games they make, plus have them look great at the same time, and that is all I want!

As with Galaxy, they're doing miracles with their Mario title.
The IQ isn't great though.

X and Mario Kart 8 look very impressive too, from what we've seen.
Given the disparity in HW, i'm actually more disappointed in PS4 and Xbone, so far.
Waiting for that Naughty Dog benchmark, though.

Perfectly fine with the Wii U's graphical ability. X is looking amazing! I am easy to please though, I'm content with Tales/Disgaea level graphics so long as the art direction is on the ball.

Tech is good enough for Nintendo games. They have proper shaders now, lighting etc. I do find art direction in Mario game ...more of the same. A bit too safe so to say.

Since SM3DW seems to be the standard when people are talking technically about the Wii U, then I'll stay on that. I'm currently at the theme park looking place that was shown in some screen shots(I don't want to spoil where that is in the game). The palette and lighting in a lot of the levels is amazing. Most levels seem to blend together in a really satisfying way, and the softening of some of the effects is really amazing. There is some pretty nice DoF on some of the levels.

With that said, the IQ of SM3DW leaves a lot of be desired. The game could use a lot of AA. That more than anything is what has turned me off from Wii/3DS/Wii U games so far(wish I still had my Wii to run Dolphin =/). There are jaggies everywhere, and while I don't try to nitpick every detail, once I see them, I can't not see them. Also, textures get reused way more often than I thought at first. There are a lot of levels using the exact same aesthetics, but the game throws you off that trail by making the design of each one different. As some posters have said, the water looks terrible in every level that has it. I know that Nintendo goes for a more cartoony art style, but having good looking water/clouds, etc. wouldn't take away from that. The backgrounds on almost every level are extremely bland too. With how plain most of the levels are in graphical intensity, I would have liked to have some nice backdrops.

Art style trumps graphics most of the time, and I find it funny as someone pointed out before that during last gen a lot of Wii supporters were saying that graphical fidelity doesn't matter, yet are now praising it with the HD console. People have just wanted fidelity and art at the same time, they're not mutually exclusive, and neither are good visuals and good gameplay. I still don't think that Nintendo's first party studios are very proficient with the hardware yet, but SM3DW has exceeded my expectations in a big way. It's making a strong case for my personal GOTY so far. I hope that MK8 turns out to be everything that I hope it will.

Absolutely. Fun is not measured in teraflops.

For the past year or so, I've grown tired of all the brown, gray, serious, overdramatic "games" on the HD twins and yearned more for the light, bright, colorful worlds of Nintendo.

They do my heart good.

I'm a PC gamer, so my standards are extraordinarily high when it comes to graphics. That said it's not impossible to enjoy a game with bad graphics. Mario looks fine, but it's nowhere near the level of the PS4 launch titles, or the XBone launch titles. I finished that level with that horrendous water in the background, and instantly I was put off by it. The tiling was HORRENDOUS.

Not really digging the game in general, but that's for another thread.

Specs are specs. But with more power there are new places to go with art style too.
With PS4 level hardware they could go in this direction for example.
This is not possible to reach (iq, polygon count, lighting quality), but you could get something quite impressive and much better looking than Wii U.

WiiU is such a step up from the Wii its not shocking really they are producing fantastic looking games. Wii was a repacked Gamecube & lacked programmable shaders.

I've been satisfied since Nintendoland but SM3DW is amazing and is a nice example of just how impressive the graphics it can push are.

From what I've been seeing, while it may not have the raw power of the PS4, it has many of the modern effects and lighting beyond what the PS360 were capable of so I think it will continue to hold it's own and continue to look fresh like something that can e considered next-gen. As time goes on, more impressive visuals will inevitably be able to be squeezed out of the console but for what we've gotten so far, the graphics can be very satisfying. I'm already more pleased than I was about the majority of the 1st year releases for the Wii, visually. Super Mario Galaxy was the best looking game I recall that year and very few games came close before, and after it came out unfortunately. Thankfully, that's not quite the case this time.

Will have any games that look like Ryse or Killzone Shadowfall? Probably not pushing the hardware even close to the same degree and producing images that have the same level of detail, but Nintendo games will look great, everything else at least as the capability to look "good enough" imho. I may still get another platform in the futuer or upgrade my PC for games that won't be on the Wii U, but I for what the Wii U does offer, I'm satisfied.

Since the system consumes 1/3 to 1/4 the power of the PSOne I have to say I'm extremely impressed. Nintendo seems to go for a lighthearted art style and it works. I don't play their games to get a gritty look. I play them to regain a sense of wonder.

To those hoping for a price of $199 you being either delusional or sadist. At launch Nintendo was losing a small bit of money and now at $50 less (and including potential game sales into that price) they are losing more.

If they dropped it to $199 they would be committing suicide. Just ask Sony and Microsoft how selling consoles at a huge loss has been working out for them in previous generations.

You can sell a lot at $1 but profusely bleed to death. The line must be drawn somewhere.
