The Argentinian prosecutor who accused President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of orchestrating a cover-up in the investigation of Iran over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre has been found dead in his apartment, authorities say.

Alberto Nisman, who had been looking into the blast at the AMIA Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people, claimed last week that Fernández had conducted secret negotiations with Iran through non-diplomatic channels, offering to cover up the involvement of Iranian officials so Argentina could start swapping grain for much-needed oil from Iran.

“Alberto Nisman was found dead on Sunday night in his flat on the 13th floor of the tower Le Parc, in the Buenos Aires district of Puerto Madero,” the Argentinian security ministry said in a statement.

Alberto Nisman said Fernández intended to clear the suspects so Argentina could swap grain for oil from Iran.

Wow. He was supposed to show the evidence today in front of the congress.

Wow I really hope the evidence he was going to give is presented, I would assume he left it somewhere other than at home or the office if he were concerned for his safety.

What a disgusting attack.

There is a LOT of anti-semitism in Argentina, I wouldn't be surprised this was a locally planned act, although it's always possible others were involved.

Edit: Wikipedia article makes it unclear who was responsible, but the government sometimes openly accused Iran.

Isn't Argentina a corrupt country, could've sworn I read that somewhere.

It is a mix of corruption and incompetence with sprinkles of persecution complex and dashes of botox.

Iirc Nestor's first term was sorta good, especially compared to the shitfest that happened before him. Menem times were cray. His wife, tho? lol. Maduro levels.

This is very interesting. I will be following this story. Especially after the Hebdo massacre, this is a bad-time to be caught covering up terrorism.

Also I never realized President Fernandez tried to form a joint investigation with Iran, what the hell? That's literally the same as if the US accepted NK's offer of a joint investigation of the Sony hacks.

Where do you get that there's a lot of anti semitism in argentina?

This takes the prize, tho, plain incredible

You know, conspiracies do in fact happen. Like this. Not aliens.

A conspiracy just takes two assholes. They happen every fucking day. The stigma around the word is so weird.

I'd say it's more about vocal minorities and not really a LOT of anti-semitism in Argentina. Kids these days think it's cool to be nazi (yep, believe it or not, we've arrived to that level of craziness) and they show how cool they are by trash talking about israeli people. Of course there's also adults who do the same stuff, but they aren't the majority of the country either. Forums are full of anti semitism because of those reasons.

He went as far as to say he might die before presenting the evidence. Which makes me think he had already transferred it to somewhere safe, I hope, for the sake of all of us.

My brother and sister in law live in Buenos Aires. He hates Fernández with a passion, but he's also somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan politically, so I feel that he isn't the best source of information.

He rants incoherently about it, but I have to say I'm stunningly ignorant on Argentine politics, so I have no idea how much of what he talks about are paranoid screed and how much is true. Anyone Argentinians able to summarise the current situation?

I livre in Brazil but my whole family is from Argentina. There are many pro-kirchner that say this guy is crazy including my brother.
To me and my parents its clearly a murder, but I don't think we'll ever know the truth.

So what's going wrong right now?

What I mean is what political parties are involved here? What are their underlying philosophies, who are their interested constituents? What about that financial crisis that happened not that long ago? How has that affected the landscape?

Obviously there is a lot of ground to cover, but it would be nice to get a little more context.

There's too much stuff going on, I wouldn't even know where to start. When I first came here, I thought she was alright but man, she has clearly lost it.

Is that related to all the Nazis who fled to South America after WW2 or for some other reason?

There are a lot of Jews in Argentina, so as always people attack them as a result. Politically of course people will say they are like a lobby, so there are a lot of political-related attacks.

During the "dirty war" there were disproportionately high numbers of Jewish casualties.

One of the alternate locations that were considered as a new home for Jews other than Israel was Patagonia, so there is a lot of stupid conspiracies about this (when there was a forest fire in 2012 caused by an Israeli, people said he did it on purpose).

When I was in Fitz Roy, the only time I saw a signage written in Hebrew was one saying not to leave litter. Why only this sign and not the others in the park? Even if a lot of Israelis visit Patagonia after their military service, it seemed like it was saying that they are disproportionately responsible for most of the trash, there were stars of David on the sign and all.

Also, Kirchner is very close to the Jewish community, so people who oppose her (or Nestor) easily target this relation. I've seen more than once people claims Kirchner is Jewish, but I never saw any proofs of that and the Wikipedia entry makes no mention of it, so I presume people make this up.

Basically just Google it. But there is a lot of it throughout South America, it's just that there are particularities in Argentina that probably make it worst (at the same time, maybe having a bigger community still makes it safer than being a Jew in other South American countries).

edit: BTW here's an old glowing review of Kirchner on her electoral victory by Jerusalem Post, it also makes numerous mentions of the Kirchners formally accusing Iran of being responsible for the bombing: Argentine, US Jews applaud as Argentina elects Kirchner

Guy was definitely murdered. Calling this a suicide is a joke.
It might have been the Iranian intelligence.

The financial crisis is still ongoing, but nobody talks about it as much as they a few months ago. The main problem is that we don't really have other political parties, if you look at the coming elections, the only ones who have real chances of winning are also Peronistas, so they will probably continue with a lot of the same stuff. I don't really have any hopes of us making it out of the crisis, when Nestor Kirchner took over the presidency he did a lot of things right, but then Cristina started her own work and now we are here. I'm not even sure if we are in a better shape than with Menem, for example, it's just that there's a lot of people involved with her party, so nobody wants to do anything for fear of losing their jobs or whatever stuff they are involved with.

Looks like they found a note with the shopping list for the maid to buy things on monday, on his desk. The family says that makes a bit clearer that he wasn't thinking about killing himself

-not his gun, an aide's
-no gunpowder in hands
-the bodyguards were to pick him up at 11, yet when no one answered instead of entering the building they went to get a family member and took 8 hours before forcing the door.
-time of death is sometime between noon and 15.
-service door was unlocked

i'm no gun nut, so is there any way someone can shoot themselves without ending up with traces on his hands?
